QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 04:04 PM) Please don't suck. This. I will not get my hopes up that he can be anynear the Youkilis of what is now several seasons ago, I know first hand that age can be a b****. I just hope that he has somewhat of a resurgence and is not now permanently at the Morel / Hudson level. I would be happy if Youkilis could hit 230 - 240ish, take a few walks, and play somewhere around average defense. That's a significant improvement over what we've had over at 3rd base in a long time. Anything better than that would be gravy.

Marlon Byrd suspended 50 games for using PEDs
balfanman replied to Frank_Thomas's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (balfanman @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 03:22 PM) I posted this on the MLB thread, but since it now is a thread of its own I'll repost. Ya know, I don't really want to continue to hate on the Tribune since they don't own the Cubs any longer, but.........If you read the headline in the Tribune it just reads Marlon Byrd suspended.... It doesn't mention his Cub connection until you open up the article. If it was a former Sox player it would very clearly state Former White Sox player XXXXXX suspended....... No matter how briefly or long ago he played here. Not sayin, I'm just sayin. I see that the headline was changed this morning to read "Ex Cub" Marlon Byrd. Maybe they checked this thread and felt so bad that they had been biased and have vowed to change their evil ways. -
QUOTE (everafan @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 03:38 PM) If it bears otu than fine - but 1 game isn't a sufficient sample size. Plus I like that Beckham can run a bit. Agree 100%. Just trying to think of a justification for this.
-
QUOTE (everafan @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 03:22 PM) Youk is not a better hitter right now. Not to nitpick, but it depends upon your time frame of "right now". If Sunday was an indication that Youkilis is healthy and out of his slump then Youkilis might be the better hitter "right now"

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 03:09 PM) Thats nice but this doesnt belong here. Off to Diamond club I posted this on the MLB thread, but since it now is a thread of its own I'll repost. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 03:03 PM) Which is why this lineup move surprises me a bit. Youk's gone from no-respect from BobbyV, to too-much-respect from RV in 24 hours. Put me in the disapprove category. I agree with most on here that this is a mistake by Ventura, but what do I know, Robin may look like a genius if the offense starts clicking again.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 01:21 PM) One day game, the rest tonight... B-Ham beat Miss 9-5 Pedro Hernandez 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (Not sure why he went only 4 innings and 51 pitches) Erik Morrison and Seth Loman with 2 hits each, Loman with a HR Mitchell not in the lineup, KWJr played CF Of course, he is being groomed to take over for Lillibridge on the major league club. Notice I did not place this in teal.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 02:04 PM) That is 100 percent true. This quit on the team stuff is all TOTAL BS. If the Sox wanted ozzie he'd be in Chicago. Case closed. Who cares about the last-week semantics of his leaving and "quitting" on the team. If that makes you all feel better to hate on Ozzie for that, go for it. Like Dick Allen said, the Sox didn't want him. Case closed. If the events of the "last week" are closed in reference to Guillen, should not those events of that same week be closed for Cooper as well? You love to drag Coopers name in that week but completely exonerate Guillen as if it never happened. You can't have it both ways Pal.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 02:15 PM) Marlon Byrd, current FA, suspended 50 games. Victor Conte says hello. Ya know, I don't really want to continue to hate on the Tribune since they don't own the Cubs any longer, but.........If you read the headline in the Tribune it just reads Marlon Byrd suspended.... QUOTE (TheBigHurtShallRiseAgain @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 10:42 AM) From what I understand, the player changing numbers would be responsible to pay for the unsold merchandise bearing their name and number. I don't think many vendors have Danks #20 jerseys or shirts. I guess that makes sense. In the case that Jordan Danks ever becomes really good, a Danks 20 Jersey could be a good investment now.
-
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 10:35 AM) Why would it be illegal? Paying for it, maybe. But I don't think it's illegal to give up a jersey number. Something to do with the jersey vendors. I think that you can only do this in the offseason now.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 10:35 AM) No, it happens fairly often I realize that it used to, but I thought that they made a rule against doing that this year? Do you have to be in the league for so long first?
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 10:28 AM) Jordan Danks to give up #20 to Youk. Danks to wear #7 I thought that this was illegal?
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 10:25 AM) I wonder how much $$ Danks2 is getting for 20. He's not getting anything. Illegal. Maybe next year, if both are still around.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 24, 2012 -> 09:45 PM) First of all, he's not going to keep up an ERA of 1.25 as a starting pitcher because nobody has done that for a very long time. Second of all, he's made 6 starts. Before we make proclamations of how good a pitcher is, perhaps we should wait more than 6 starts. I love what Quintana is doing as much as you or him or her or anybody else on this board, but just give it a bit of time. It would be almost impossible for him to keep up his current pace, but wow, has he been impressive. One concern I have is his next start. Wouldn't that be in the Yankee series this weekend? Maybe he has some extra nerves due to facing his former team, wanting to show them that they made a mistake. On the other hand, maybe he really does show his former team something.
-
No one has started this yet? Well, I do appreciate his one start against the Twins last year and......and........and.......and, well, didn't he kind of save the bullpen a time or two in blowouts? Wasn't he the one we got back when ridding ourselves of Teahen last year? That would actually be a pretty good question, Who would wind up being a bigger help at 3rd base for the rest of this year, Teahen or Youkalis? This question takes into account the possibility of ineptness and health of both of these guys.

I personally wish it were possible to have zero representatives at the All Star game. I'd prefer that our players had the time off, especially the pitchers. But Sale and Peavy have just been too good........dammit.

KW whining about (OK bringing up) attendance again
balfanman replied to chisoxfan09's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 21, 2012 -> 01:34 PM) I understand that, but raising them 50% isn't the answer. Buying early should be rewarded. Season ticketholders should pay the lowest price. The pick 7 people, I can see if there are tickets available to sell, sell them at the price they paid if you can't get more. Wasn't the pricing using the Dynamic model supposed to fluctuate based on all sorts of factors? If the Sox insist on charging what they were charging for those games its a sign they had no problem no one wound up sitting in those seats. Its not on White Sox fans. Yes, I believe that in theory the season ticket holders should get lower prices, but that's not the only incentive. Besides the larger choice of seats, parking, 1st chance at playoff seats, etc, they also get a hedge in the market. While that doesn't mean much this season (and most recent Sox seasons for that matter), in a year where the Sox are really good and tickets are hard to come by and more expensive, they have their reserved seat at a fixed, lower price. Unfortunately this year the Sox are not world beaters, coupled with the economy, so the market should mean lower prices. It's kind of like playing the stock market. I know that this is not a total answer, but there is some incentive other than price. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 21, 2012 -> 08:23 AM) So essentially Kenny should just not say anything in interviews? I'm sure no one would complain about that... I guess you would have preferred he said "No comment."? I'm not suggesting he say absolutely nothing, and the term "no comment" almost sounds like he is trying to hide something. I would just be smart about it and say something to the effect of we are currently looking at all of our options to improve the ball club. Leave money and attendance out of it. Media asks him about attendance and finances because they know he can't resist saying something that fans will jump on, taken the wrong way or not. If K.W. stopped mentioning it when asked, the media would stop trying to bait him about it. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 21, 2012 -> 08:19 AM) When you sign Will Ohman for two years, you most likely overspent. But even Ohman, if used correctly (only against righthanders), can be a valuable piece if you plan on competing for a couple of years like they did when they signed him. I do not believe that they overspent on him at the time. If the Sox fall out of contention and become sellers, I would think that there would be several teams that would love to have Ohman on their side for the stretch run. -

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 21, 2012 -> 08:08 AM) The White Sox have continually put together high-priced rosters in attempt to compete every year. They put their best foot forward. Last year they essentially went out on a limb and it backfired. This is certainly not the fault of the fans; it's an economic reality. We overspent and this year we were forced to scale things back a bit. Now we are in a position to win and the GM is saying "we want to win this thing, but until we get more revenue, we can't upgrade much." He is laying out the plan for the fans to impact. I think that is great. I don't believe that the Sox "overspent" by any means. The players way underperformed. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 21, 2012 -> 08:00 AM) My evidence is such quotes don't exist. Teams have always cried poor, but the White Sox are the only team I've ever heard of that actually points to their attendance with the premise they deserve more support, and will be able to improve their team once that support is given. The latest quotes aren't too damning, but KW shouldn't be answering those questions. Why do they even talk about finances publicly? I agree, just keep your mouth shut. The media is just doing their job in getting readers to talk about them and they know that K.W. (and Ozzie when he was here) would gladly open their yaps and supply them with fodder that gets them in trouble. You would think that after 12, 13 years of being a G.M. Kenny Williams would know to shut up about attendance and finances. It does nothing but get him in trouble.
