QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 01:09 PM) Phil Rogers repeated in the Trib today. Now that's quality comfirmation for you!

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 11:49 AM) Has that been said at all recently? I know that was his knock as a rookie with the Sox but has that changed? I don't know of anything written, but the fact that he's been on what, 7 or 8 teams should be an indicator that he's not well liked. If he is a good, quality reciever I would think that teams would want to keep him around for no more than he costs.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 09:36 AM) I would love Miggy to come back. So sad when we traded him for Freddy in 2004 even though it turned out well. He would be better than AJ. No contest. I'm not so sure of that. I like Olivos' skill set, especially the ability to throw out base runners, but if what was said about him before is true, you can't have a pitching staff that doesn't want him catching them. For all of A. J.'s faults, the pitching staff aparently loves him.

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 01:34 AM) By everything I've read the past few days it looks like KW is trying to get Matsui and a Dunn/or fielder. Matsui probably DHing and looking for a lefty first basemen. I like how KW says he's listening but is out there waitin to pounce . Today has been a great day for the hot stove. If there is one thing we know about K. W. though, it's that what is leaked to the media is not what he's actually working on.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 10:58 AM) Its not about pressure. Look no further than Jose Contreras Good point!

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 10:42 AM) I'd be dissapointed if the Sox gave that up for Upton. Upton might be talented, but lets not pretend he doesn't have some issues and lets not pretend as if Floyd doesn't have significant trade value. And yes, I am a huge Gavin Floyd fan. I agree with you. Gavin isn't an ideal number 1 starter or anything, but he is a quality starter. If I'm giving up a quality major league starter I would at least like to get back a position player with a little consistancy. Justin Upton could be a star, but he could also be a major bust. Upton compares to Carlos Quentin in that category. Would you trade Gavin Floyd for Carlos Quentin if he were on another team?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 09:43 AM) That is my first thought with Granderson, and anyone else who fails in NY. Some players just can't play there. I would like to see Granderson on the Sox, but this would concern me. If he can't handle the pressure, what is he going to do in the playoffs? Maybe it has more to do with the constant pressure though. Does anyone know what Grandersons playoff stats look like?
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 12:31 AM) I've always wanted Granderson in a Sox uniform so I'll say thumbs up to the deal. However I am alarmed at how much Grandy sucked this past season. He was not good.I would love to make this deal and find a way to get a middle reliever for Pierre. Wouldn't some team, somewhere, take Juan Pierre off our hands? Please? How much, if any, of his performance this last season has to do with playing for the Yankees? Some people just just don't thrive in that environment, Maybe it has something to do with being traded in the first place. Sometimes players are in shock from being traded for the first time.

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 06:08 PM) I respectfully disagree. Dunn is not very good at 1B at all from what I've seen. All you need to prove your point is to watch replays of Adam Dunn playing 1st base for the Nationals against the White Sox this last season. Adam Dunn is beyond horrible at 1st base!

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 09:07 PM) If the D-Backs are hoping to get a MLB-ready pitcher...John Danks could be a legitimate starting point. I thought that Arizona is trying to cut costs, why would they want a pitcher who is about to get super expensive?

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 14, 2010 -> 08:12 PM) ^And everyone was pissed that we didn't have any prospects. In the end 3 of the 4 players mentioned were much better than anything the Marlins got (so far, as Maybin still has a chance). And most here still don't think we have any prospects. I'm a long way from a minor league expert, but maybe our minor league system is better than we give it credit for.

QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Nov 13, 2010 -> 11:02 PM) I thought either John Danks or Floyd was part of the package offered to get Cabrera..........not sure if we would deem that worth it or not, but after the season that Cabrera had this year.......plus you would have had to take Dontrelle Willis and that monster contract..... Willis contract wasn't that bad was it? Didn't Detroit extend him for some stupid reason afterward? Maybe that is where K. W. learned how to make bad players happy after acquiring them....cough, cough, Teahen,

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 12, 2010 -> 05:54 PM) You can't tell me that the guy's skills had diminished in 2009 and that alone is what did it, because I can point to that .942 OPS. Something changed with him very, very rapidly right around the AS break. That's not the usual pattern for "This guy is old and wearing down", unless he just suddenly hit a point of exhaustion, which seems kinda weird. Even if you look at a guy who was wearing down, say like Vlad this year, he had a bad 2nd half, but still was rested enough to put up an .880 OPS in September. I think the "something" that changed was K. W. went out and got Alex Rios for the stretch run and J. D. pouted about maybe losing playing time. I know that Dye was slumping prior to the acquisition, but then he started complaining about how his playing time might get cut instead of figuring out how to help his team out by....oh...I don't know....maybe hitting a baseball once in a while. In actuality, Dyes playing time should of been cut drastically and it wasn't. I love J.D. for what he did in his Sox career, especially 2005; but he seems like way too much of a "me first" guy rather than his concerns over the team. JMHO

Who is going to be our best starter next season?
balfanman replied to balfanman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Nov 11, 2010 -> 10:52 AM) I think Gavin has too many mental issues to ever just be awesome. Not saying he is a wack-job, I think he just over-analyzes things out and is too critical on himself. If I were betting, I would Danks continues to evolve into one of the best in baseball. I would agree with you that that has been Gavins biggest issue in the past. I would counter that with none other than our own Ed Farmer. Doesn't Ed Farmer often say that a pitcher will all of the sudden "click the light bulb on", realize that he has the talent to be in the majors, and then takes off? The confidence factor takes over. I don't know if that is where Gavin is at or not, but I have this feeling that he's ready to do just that. -
There seems to be a lot of talk of needing to trade a starter this offseason in order to acquire a bat for next year. We tend to try to figure out which starter is the most expendable, meaning who is the worst of the bunch, and then decide that they are the one that needs to get traded. I thought that I would take a different approach and try to figure out who is most likely to be our most effective starter in 2011. This then would be the one pitcher that you definitely would not want to trade away. I'm not necessarily looking at contract issues here, even though I know that plays a large part in making trades and building a team. I'm mainly wondering, all things aside, who is going to be the best pitcher next season? My choice is Gavin Floyd. Without getting into statistical analysis here, I just feel that Gavin is primed to break out and have a big year. What are your thoughts?

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 04:15 PM) Just ditch this stupid rotating DH idea. I don't think that having a rotating DH is a bad thing necessarily, providing your options can all hit a baseball competently. Our problem this past season wasn't a rotating DH, our problem was that most of them couldn't hit well.

I would only want V Mart on this team as a primary dh, part time 1st baseman, and 3rd string, emergency catcher only.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 08:20 AM) I don't doubt you, but you need to tell that to the people at BR. This is what it says for 2012 on MB's player page. 2012 33 Chicago White Sox *$15,000,000 $15M Vesting Option Option vests if player is traded Kalapse verified this and this article is not telling you that this option expired when Mark got his 10/5 rights this past July. Mark only had that to help protect him if the Sox wanted to trade him before he could veto a trade. Now Mark has full say so on where he goes.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 07:37 AM) Are you serious? I see absolutely no reason why he would accept that deal. This is the guy who has seriously discussed retiring when this contract is up. Unless he is going to STL, I doubt he accepts any other trade. If he is traded, his $15M option for 2012 kicks in, so he would play for that team for another season, which is another reason to think he would block it. Will people please stop saying this, it isn't correct. Buehrles option year expired when his 10/5 rights kicked in in July. If Buehrle is traded, this years salary gets bumped by 1 million, and then he is a free agent after this year. Simply put, anyone trading for Mark only has him for 2011.

QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 10:41 AM) Former Reds and Tigers manager Sparky Anderson is in hospice care due to complications resulting from dementia. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/da...-hospice-care/1 I am surprised to read that he is only 76 years old. I would of guessed he was much older than that. It just seemed to me that he looked like an old man when he managed the Tigers 20 + years ago.
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Oct 31, 2010 -> 09:22 PM) You're 100% correct; if he's traded this offseason the team that picks him up will only be on the hook for his $14M 2011 salary. The escalators and option year were just added in lieu of giving him a full no trade clause, now that his 10/5 rights have kicked in those are no longer in effect. This certainly changes things. It would not surprise me at all to see Buehrle traded.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 30, 2010 -> 07:44 PM) There's a kicker for Buehrle if he gets traded, so it would be about $15 million next season, plus Quentin will be around $5 million and Rasmus will make peanuts. No way that deal gets done. I don't believe that you're correct on this. If the Sox trade Buehrle the trade has to be approved by Buehrle as he has 10 and 5 rights. And the window for the option year to kick in if traded is gone. That 5th year was only if he was traded by July 15 of this year. It no longer applies. That is what I can remember about his contract. If someone knows how to check this for sure it would be appreciated.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 30, 2010 -> 10:40 PM) My dog runs around and is generally excited when I am happy. My dog whimpers and comes to console me when I am sad. My dog goes to his kennel when I am angry. They know exactly what to do about it. That seems to me more like the dog is reacting to you, rather than being proactive and actually doing something about it.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 30, 2010 -> 07:55 AM) You just said "Ozzie can't be that dumb outside of baseball", and then cited "For example, look how he handled Jenks mentally during the World Series" as your reason. LOL, that is an "in-baseball" example I think that you're right to an extent, but I was refering to the X's & O's of baseball. Handling someone's mentalality and emotions requires a little bit of intelligence, beyond baseball, IMHO. Yes, a dog may be able to discern when your happy or sad, but probably wouldn't know what to do about it. I don't know Ozzie, he just doesn't appear to be all that dumb to me.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 30, 2010 -> 12:28 PM) Maybe he won't be there, but Carlos Quentin and prospects, especially White Sox prospects, isn't going to get the job done, and I don't know that they really want to take on much money. If it comes out the Cardinals are dealing him there are going to be offers the Sox can't match or would be stupid to match. I'm not at all disputing what you say D.A.; but wouldn't Buehrles' contract come off of the books about the time that Puhols' extension would start? If it does, I could see the Cardinals wanting to take on a little more salary for a solid run next year, especially if Rasmus is the problem that LaRussa makes him out to be. By the same token, would K.W. want to add a problem child to our roster without doing some serious checking on this guy first. The Tribune also mentioned that the Cardinals would be interested in Tajeda for a stopgap at shortstop, meaning they might want a shortstop for the future. If K.W. decides that he really wants Rasmus, would something like a Escobar (fresh off a hot Arizona Fall League), Buehrle, Quentin, Harrell package, give or take a few parts or $ on either side, work for Rasmus?
