I can't believe that this thread went over 8 hours without a post! My guess is that this is sort of a calm before the storm if KW doesn't bring a bat in by tomorrow at 3:05

I see the moron who is Phil Rogers is at it again. Basically says that letting go of Hudson is akin to losing Jared Weaver.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:33 AM) You'd think 4 straight months of being atrocious at the plate is a good enough sample size for Ozzie to seriously diminish his workload...but I guess not. To me, Kotsays' only redeeming quality is that he stands on the left side of the plate. I would much rather see Jones in the lineup over Kotsay. The average may not improve that much, but at least you would have better power numbers and Jones can run a little better.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 10:32 PM) Heard that call. It was awkward to say the least. I was like WTF?? Ditto here. I've found the post game show to be quite a comedic relief. Rongey should be granted sainthood for putting up with these bozo's.

QUOTE (bulokis @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 01:38 PM) Dan Bernstein said from his source, the Sox have a lot of scenarios and Adam Dunn is not the only big name linked with the White Sox. Mr Bernstein is really going out on a limb with breaking news there!

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 09:41 AM) ESPN's Park Factor data on Home runs. Biggest effect on HR this year: #1: U.S. Cellular Field. #30: Target Field. Not that I really want Ted Lilly, but if we could pitch him in Minnesota for even 1 game it might be worth it.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 12:25 AM) I would love to see some scheduled double headers on sundays. Something like each team has to have at least 5 per year, I think it would be a ton of fun. But as mentioned, the players union would never go for that unfortunately. Why not? If you sweeten the pot enough I'm sure that they would go for about anything. You could expand the rosters, or even increase the schedule to 170 games or so. I watched Sox baseball since the early 70's and one of the "romances" of the game for me (and I'm sure many others on this site) was the Sunday doubleheader, watching guys like Wilbur Wood & Stan Bahmsen pitch with the suds flowing. "Ah, ya can't beat fun at the old ballpark friends". Something like this could help spawn a new generation of baseball fans that will fill theses boards 20 - 30 years from now.

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 01:29 AM) Truthfuly this may sound crazy but I think Hendry would give the sox a decent rate for Lilly. Him an KW have said in the past they wouldnt overcharge one another if they were in a divisonal race. I think Morel is going to be a good MLB player maybe a Micheal cuddyer like player and agree would hate to see him go to the north side and succeed. However I dont think the cubs would want morel they have Vitters in triple A. I would think flowers or Gatrell plus a few AA pitchers get it done. That move with a Dunn deal, Hudson+one of the trio would kill at farm system but worse comes to worse, they both probably walk after the season and we get A and B compensation to rebuild. Plus these two in my opinion would be cohesive with the chemistry of the team. Lilly is prob friend with a few sox players. Just hold on to the Tank and Beckham my only un touchables the rest of the farm is available. This team is good but needs to add!! Baseball is a business. I sincerely doubt that Lilly goes to anyone but the highest bidder, If any G. M. is anything but cutthroat when it comes to making deals he should be fired immediately.

I wish that they would expand the rosters by one or two players and bring back the Sunday doubleheader.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 10:02 AM) Erik Manning's take: http://palehosepariah.wordpress.com/2010/0...-hall-of-famer/ He writes a nice little sabr blog on the Sox BTW, also used to write for FanGraphs. I'm kind of on the ledge about Omar and the hall. I think he will get in because of the gold gloves, but whether or not he deserves it...I don't know. Defense is one thing, but offense is another. Vizquel was never a very good offensive player. He was always average to below average, but since he played SS and played great defense there, below average offense was more than acceptable. I thought that Visquel had several pretty good offensive years with Cleveland. I know that he won't get into the Hall on his offensive prowess alone, but I thought that he was above average.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 07:33 AM) My bad That's cool. As I get older it's usually me that has the brain farts.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 06:54 AM) I'm late to the discussion, and it might have been mentioned, but Arizona is well familiar with the sox minor league pitching from the Peavy trade, not to mention spring training. I'd rather the sox keep Jackson and don't move him to Wash. Then the Sox have another solid 5th SP type, if Hudson doesn't turn it around. Wasn't that San Diego?

Teahen cleared for baseball activity...
balfanman replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (since56 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 07:03 AM) Viciedo goes down for sure. Teahan is utility. Ozzie will stack the lineup with left handers at times and at other times play the hot bat ( Kotsay,Teahan). I think people who want to dump Kotsay forget he is our only backup at first if Konerko get injured. I believe that Teahen plays first, along with Viciedo. In a pinch I believe that there are several others who could handle first base temporarily as well. -
QUOTE (SouthsideNorthsideFan @ Jul 17, 2010 -> 02:50 AM) LOL!!! And the way Ricketts has been talking, OH BOY! Talk about another 100 years of futility...yikes! It looks to me like Rickets is almost forced to keep Hendry just for financial reasons. If the Cubs are that broke, have to sell off their high salaried players for pennies on the dollar and go with kids, repair their run down ballpark, and still charge high ticket prices; then the Sox could be primed to take a larger market share in the Chicago area. If we could put together a strong pennent push this season and next, we could own this city.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 12:42 PM) Jeremy Reed has returned to the organization, he's been assigned to Charlotte. De Aza's back on the DL. I've always thought that DeAza had major league talent, but man, he just can't stay healthy

Even with Peavy gone, we still need a hitter more than a SP
balfanman replied to Eminor3rd's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 12, 2010 -> 07:54 AM) Before this year, he hasn't made more than 11 starts in a season since 2006. Well yeah; that's kind of my point. He is now all the way back from his surgery. Before his surgery I believe that he never missed significant time. It's not like Freddy is injury prone and we're just waiting for another body part to fall off. -
But this year’s Twins have a plodding, station-to-station offense; a deceptively poor defense; and an unremarkable pitching staff that has suffered greatly because of the defensive issues. Sounds to me like the Twins have morphed into the White Sox of seasons past. Who would of thought that Gardenhire admired the Sox as much as Hawk and Guillen admired the Twins!

Even with Peavy gone, we still need a hitter more than a SP
balfanman replied to Eminor3rd's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 01:22 AM) Peavy was killing batters, guys. It hurts to lose him, badly. But is Hudson really THAT bad as a 5 starter? Even without Peavy, we've got four pitchers pitching like #2 guys, which is not something many teams can boast. Our pitching is STILL the best in the Central, including the bullpen. Now, imagine how effective it would be if we added a legitimate bat to the DH slot, putting our offense on par with everything other AL team! Kotsay's line is .225/.322/.385 -- and he's NOT playing below his potential! This is ridiculous! Now, let's consider the options and their costs as well. Haren is a stud, but we absolutely do not have enough to get him, period. Even if we did, do you really want to give up the ENTIRE depleted farm just to put Haren over Hudson? Oswalt is expensive, declining, injury-prone, and from the NL, and he hates us and has a NTC anyway. Ted Lilly is not good enough to pitch much, if any, better than Hudson in the AL and in a homerun park. Now, what would Adam LaRoche cost? Clevelan Santeliz? Jeff Marquez? Prorated salary of a million bucks? LaRoche's numbers are down this year, but he's one year removed from an .844 OPS and would absolutely benefit from the Cell and a contending atmosphere. He would be SO much better than Kotsay and cost almost nothing. NOW, suppose we sign Pedro Martinez! I know, I'm getting ahead of myself, but he could be Freddy Garcia: Round 2. Freddy's arm is due to fall off sometime over the next 5-7 starts, which is just about time for Pedro to get ready for 8 weeks of slow, crafty veteran pitching. All of a sudden, we've significantly improved our offense, and adequately patched our SP hole, and given up nothing! Even if we go bigger than LaRoche (Adam Dunn?) and do trade our precious few decent prospects, I would argue that we would benefit massively more from a good LH bat, whose runs will relieve pressure from our entire staff, making it easier for us to win every night instead of just every five days. Why is Freddys' arm due to fall off? I've heard several people say that they can't trust Freddy to stay healthy, Why not? He's well over 2 years (almost 3 I think)removed from his surgery and other than that I don't believe that he's ever missed significant time. I don't understand why they think Freddy is going to get hurt. That said, any pitcher, no matter how healthy, is one pitch away from being done. I would think that the way they're trying to handle Buehrle with kid gloves and Gavins hip, that those two are much more likely to go down than Freddy. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 12:37 PM) I think Lilly would be a disaster at USCF. In fact, even though he's had a few good years, I think he'd be a disaster anywhere he went in the AL. In the NL, you can survive on smoke and mirrors, and that's exactly what Ted Lilly is right now. His average fastball is 85.9 MPH...that is going to get torn apart by AL teams that can play a DH to matchup with him. Even Andruw Jones would be able to hit him. The first pitcher I think of that doesn't have great stuff that has gotten by this year in the AL is Freddy Garcia. That's because, even though his fastball is only at 88 MPH right now, he's only throwing it 31.3% of the time. He's throwing his slider 25.2%, his change 23.8%, his split-finger 15.1%, and his curveball 4.6% of the time. The reason he is effective is because he is constantly keeping hitters off balance with his different array of pitches, and even then, only his splitter and changeup have been good pitches for him so far. Let Dan Hudson pitch. If he shows no signs of success, then and only then do you make a move. He's gonna be able to make like 4 starts before the deadline. Not doubting you, just verifying. I thought that I recently read somewhere that Freddys' fastball was back up tp 90 - 91.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 07:39 AM) So do you feel comfortable with the way the team is constructed now? Do you believe this team as it is has enough to win the world series? ...with the DH of Kotsay/Jones? There are no sure things of course, but provided Hudson does okay, I personally feel comfortable with Teahen / Viciedo rotating between 3rd and DH.

QUOTE (G&T @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 08:01 AM) According to whoever the Score just quoted (Sherman I think), the deal with the Yankees is done but Lee won't pitch against the Mariners in order to avoid embarrassment. Why would that be embarassing?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 7, 2010 -> 05:51 PM) Do you really expect Freddy to keep up this pace the rest of the season? I don't understand all of the concern over Freddys' health. It's been more than 2 years since his surgery and he seems to be in perfect health. I'm more worried about Buehrle or Floyd going down than I am Freddy.
