I didn't realize that Walker has only been in A+ for a few weeks and I just remembered there was a hand injury that I momentarily forgot about that Walker had at OU last year. Hand injuries kill power for 12-14 months, as we saw with Madrigal. I don't think it's that close anymore but Rutherford still has a 10% chance because of his youth but he's running out of time.

Why do you think Hostetler got the Japanese useless employee treatment? I still think Rutherford has a smallish chance but he's running out of time.
-
Is he really a non prospect? He's only been 22 for two months.
-
I didnt realize this but Walker is 10 months older than Rutherford. Rutherford just turned 22 around Memorial day and Walker turned 23 Tuesday. After doing more research it isn't really that close and the only thing Rutherford has going for him is being more advanced at a younger age. Edit: I had Walker's college injury wrong. Thought it was a hand, it wasn't. Changes the equation and makes it close again.
-
I don't think that it is that distant. Rutherford outperformed Walker in A+ as a younger player and they've had similar power numbers. Rutherford had a higher BA and OPS than Walker has. Is there another wrist injury a la Madrigal that I'm forgetting about? I see that Walker has hit all of his 8 HR in 20 games in A+. Walker is older than Rutherford.

Both are 22 years old and have somewhat disappointing production for their level. Who do you think has the better chance of being a MLB contributor? To remind people, Rutherford hit .293 in A+ last year and Walker is hitting .275 there this year. I'd have to look up the power numbers.
-
Here's a question for everyone: Rutherford or Walker, who is the better prospect? Both have been disappointing production wise this year. Rutherford is in AA , Walker is still in A+ and they're both 22. I've created a thread and poll for the subject. I think it is an interesting discussion.

A fair and balanced soliloquy about Jose Abreu, by ron

I'm not sure I want him bzck, and if they do bring him back anything in 7 figures is an overpay. -
The Sox are going to have to play ball with the big boys in FA in order to finish this thing off. Unfortunately, injuries and underperformance have killed the once promising depth from 2017. The guys they have left with significant value to other teams are pieces they can't afford to trade. Uncle Jerry is going to have to put on his big boy pants or they're going to top out at 88 wins or so and everyone will be infuriatingly frustrated beyond belief.

Maybe they need to see more results from Collins' new swing/approach when he goes through the International League a second time. That is about the only logical explanation for not calling up Collins. Reed was killing them offensively so I understand giving someone else a look. If Collins wasn't ready for a second try, I would've rather they called up Mercedes. Choosing Skole over Mercedes is purely a handedness decision. Same with Goins over Mendick.

Me too. That's just idiocy.

I know. It's also why I really don't care about winning the remainder of this season. Full systems go in 2020 though.

IIRC the top of the 2020 class is loaded with college arms. I agree they probably end up at 6 or 7 but I'd be stoked with 5.

Before anyone laughs at this term, hitters swing at those a lot and they're really useful for missing bats. They're only competitive misses when the hitters lay off the pitch. The more a pitcher hangs around the plate, the harder it is for hitters to lay off borderline strikes. -

Cease has his best game as a MLB player so far. It's too bad they couldn't catch a couple of those jam shots in the 6th. He deserved better than 3ER. Still a QS though. -

Yup. I doubt he'd make it through Waivers. Hell I doubt he'd make it past Baltimore. -
Probably Collins. I think Mercedes gets a look in September. I'm surprised Reed has an option left this year.

Maybe not once the scouts start seeing this arsenal he's throwing. -

He's got the 2018 Shields factor to me. Still a somewhat useful player, but a constant reminder of Sox FO failures. It is nauseating to see him in a Sox uni for that reason. The FO doesn't care what the fans think so he's probably going to be here for the remainder of the season, just like Shields was last year. -

Yeah, after this year he's out of options. It's their last chance to get anything out of Fulmer. -

Jay can go too, but probably not. The only advantage he has over Cordell is that he makes his at bats more watchable. -

It wasn't that I ever thought Reed wasn't garbage, but rather it was that I had a lower opinion of Collins. Enough so that I would have rather seen Reed take the ABs. It always was a complete South Park Douche/Turd situation. Collins' adjustments have made me want to see him up here again. I wasn't sure if Collins was ever going to make the adjustments he needed to in order to be an ok hitter in the Majors. It looks like he has given himself a chance. -

Yeah, I remember those guys at both their peak value as prospects and lack of MLB success. It was much worse pre-2009 than it is now. It seems like teams have become a lot better at scouting and they don't pick players that turn into non-prospects in the first round that much anymore. A lot of these guys still don't have long careers, but they're not washing out in the minors like they used to. -

I think I've seen enough. If he was 24, I think I'd give him the remainder of the season to show something but since he's 26 I'm ready to walk away. -

I don't say who a lot because I'm a baseball diehard and a prospect guy. I've heard of most of the 1st round picks since 2004ish.
