  2. A trade that brought temperamental but talented Richie (Dick) Allen from the Dodgers for Lefthander Tommy John was the key to major improvement in the offense that helped the Sox advance to second in the West (87-67) 5.5 games out. Allen hammered a club record 37 homers to lead the league and also was the league leader in RBI's (113) while Hitting .308. Carlos May also hit .308 with 12 homers and 68 RBI's. Wilbur Wood Continued his amazing pitching with a 24-17, a 2.51 ERA and 49 games started, amtching a club record set by Ed Walsh in 1908. Wood and his two other starting mates Stan Bahnsen (21-16) and Tom Bradley (15-14) started 130 of 154 games played for the club. New Relief ace Terry Forster (6-5) set a club record of 29 saves. For having the club in first place as late as Aug 12, Chuck Tanner was named Manager of the Year and personnel Director Roland Hemond as Executive of the Year.

  6. After a Dismal sixth place finish in the West, 42 games behind, nine deals involving 31 players were made by new general manager Stu Holcomb and player personnel chief Roland Hemond with only seven players returning from the previous season. After an Opening day win before a record 43,253 the White Sox lost the next seven and dropped into the cellar. But the team struggled back to finish 3rd (79-83) 22.5 games back. Bill Melton shifted to third base from the outfield and became the first Whitesox homerun champion (33) with 86 RBI's and a .269 average. Carlos May continued his comeback with a .294 season. Wilbur Wood switched to a starting role and worked 334 innings (Most for the Whitesox since 1922) fininshing 22-13 with 22 complete games and was second in the league with a 1.91 ERA. Tom Bradley was 15-15 with a 2.96 ERA and Tommy John 13-16 while new ace reliever Bart Johnson (12-10) had 14 saves

  22. Perhaps the worst season in WhiteSox History. The Club was 56- 106, the most losses ever, with Don Gutteridge fired on Seot 3rd in a front office shakeup. He was replaced by Chuck Tanner. Aparicio was one of the the few bright spots, hitting .313(Forth Best in the league) and breaking Luke Appling's record of 2,219 games at Shortstop. With Gary Peters traded to Boston, Joel Horlen (6-16) and Tommy John (12-17) struggled despite help from Jerry Janeski (10-17) and reliever Wibur Wood (9-13) with 21 saves. Off the field, the arrival of the brewers in Milwaukee cut off avenue of attendance. With all games in Comiskey Park the gates fell to 495, 355, the lowest for the team since 1942. Carlso May made a remarkable comeback from a freak accident during a tour of marine resere duty in 1969, partially destroying his hand. May Batted .285 with 12 homers and 68 RBI's
