  1. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 03:11 PM) I wouldn't bet on it, unless he goes from a 30 homer or so a year guy to hitting 49, than 73, than 40 a year while walking 200 times a year and having OPS's in the 1.200 or so range starting at age 37 and into his 40's, all the while having a moutain of evidence connecting him to a state of the art steroid factory and having his shoe size go up by 3 and head size by 1 and a half. To clarify, I mean that about A-Rod. If A-Rod doesn't suddenly acquire Hulk Hogan's physique and Mr. Potatohead's noggin in his late 30's, I don't think that as many people will suspect him of juicing.
  2. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 03:04 PM) Since I can't figure out how to type stuff in the neat code format, I'll just attach a picture. If you think those are bad numbers, you are either blind, stupid, or a hater. Which is LV? LOL at the Mr. T pic.
  3. QUOTE(Stan Bahnsen @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 02:26 PM) Ozzie has his good points certainly, as it pertains to accountability and motivation, but I'm not crazy about his in-game strategy. His love of bunting probably needs it's own thread. I tend to agree with you, although my original post has more to do with the merciless Ozzie-trashing that has gone on here over the past year and a half, much of which is spearheaded by the author of this thread.
  4. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 02:11 PM) He definitely manages with his emotions and could use someone a bit more level headed, and louder, at his side. Well, going from Harold to Rock/Joey was a move in that direction, no?
  5. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 01:29 PM) Just because the guy is about as articulate as a box of rocks doesn't mean he's FOS. Raffy confirmed that for him. Yep, and not to mention Giambi. He confirmed everyone's suspicions about Mac, Juan Gonzalez, and Brett Boone as well. Many negative things can be said about Canseco, but much of "Juiced" has been proven to be accurate.
  6. Too bad Kenny didn't offer Pods before the season started. He may have been able to get Marmol in return. Hindsight is always 20/20.
  7. Another "Ozzie's a big, stupid poopie-head" post. Awesome.
  8. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 12:36 PM) I'd tag it and sell it afterward. It'd still sell. And probably for less money, as the buyer would likely be a Bonds fan.
  9. QUOTE(knightni @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 09:23 AM) Fanball.com is decent. Yep. Them and MFL are the only ones I'd consider using.
  10. QUOTE(AirScott @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 09:36 AM) When I read Jeff Pearlman's Love Me, Hate Me, I would hate Bonds one moment and almost like him a few pages or a chapter later. Great book. It's too bad that we don't see more of the "good Barry" that he talks about. After reading the book, I kind of felt bad for the guy. Growing up with a raging alcoholic father who embarrassed the hell out of him and his family must've been tough (not to mention the lack of a mentoring father figure). And it probably didn't help when not only his father, but Willie Freaking Mays of all people, told an impressionable young Barry that he'd have to act like a complete ass to the media if he wanted to survive as a superstar black athlete.
  11. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 09:28 AM) They all have mental issues. Some more severe than others. Yep. Show me a pro athlete without a massive ego and an occasional mean streak and I'll show you a someone who won't be playing at the professional level for very long. FWIW, a former roommate of mine played college ball with a guy who ended up in the Orioles farm system. Apparently this guy got called up one day back in the late '90s and, when walking out to RF one day, Cal Ripken completely b****ed him out for (gasp!) walking across the dirt on the left side of the infield. Even the nicest guys in professional sports can act like complete asses at times.
  12. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 09:20 AM) I've never heard Bonds do it either, and I've met the man and gotten his autograph over a dozen times at a park and away from a park. Barry's not-always-nice treatment of fans (and people in general) is pretty well-documented. I've also read that he can be an incredibly generous and caring person at times. It sounds like he has some psychological issues where he alternates Jeckel-and-Hyde-style between Frank on a good day and Albert Belle on a bad day.
  13. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 09:09 AM) He's very much like Frank Thomas as far as his personality. I've never heard Frank tell kids asking for autographs to "shut the f up." Frank has a massive ego and can be a bit mercurial at times, but I've never heard of his treating a fan badly. Can't say the same for Barry.
  14. Wow. Barry may be a complete jerk and the increased size of his noggin clearly shows that he was using illegal performance-enhancers. But I have to give him props for being the greatest position player of my generation (with apologies to A-Rod, who is still relatively young). Even before he began using the juice, he had 400 HRs, 400 SBs, and 3 MVPs... and that's first-ballot HOF material on its own. Too bad that Barry made himself so unlikeable. I was surprised to see Hank give that videotaped message on the JumboTron. That was classy, even if Barry didn't really deserve it. What was lacking in class was the qualifier that Selig put on the end of his "congratulatory" statement. Considering that Selig conveniently looked the other way when steroid-fueled players were making his league tons of money, it was also downright hypocritical.
  15. QUOTE(whitesox61382 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 03:57 PM) 2) Resign Dye 2year 14M - despite his slow start(some of which was his injury) he still has 22HR and 59RBI and has been producing like the 2006 version of Dye since the AS break. Personally, I would love(and believe it is realistic) to expect the 2005 version of Dye type numbers(.275/30/85 .850OPS), which for 7M is a relative bargain. Not a bad idea, but what makes you think that Dye will accept anything less than $20 million?
  16. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 07:08 PM) # of starts per year is down # of innings pitched by starters is down Managers are more likely to go to their bullpens earlier And if their bullpens can hold that lead, they'll still get the win (assuming they pitch five innings). Randy Johnson had some horrible bullpens in Seattle and Arizona and he's come pretty close. The flip side to more bullpen use is less wear and tear on the starter's arm, extending their careers. I'll bet that people back in the early 90's were saying, "You'll never see another five years of dominance that'll match what Sandy Koufax did, especially with all of these smaller ballparks and these hitters built like Hulk Hogan nowadays." By 2003, they saw Pedro do it. I definitely think that there will be another 300-game winner.
  17. QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 02:03 PM) i've used cbs.sportsline.com and they've always been solid I've heard the opposite about them. They're horribly unreliable. Myfantasyleague.com is the consensus best for hosting leagues. And it's cheaper than Sportsline. Customization out the wazoo and you will rarely have problems with server crashes. If you're just looking to join a public league, I would recommend Yahoo. I've used NFL.com in the past, but can't really comment about how well-run their site is now.
  18. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 03:02 PM) Because of his contract, at the very worst, Jose Contreras is going to be starting for this team for a month or two next year just to see if he could regain some form. Yep. With that contract, he's worth less than a bag of Big League Chew right now. QUOTE(Wanne @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 03:09 PM) If Garland goes...I really hope somehow Kenny can snag Wladimir from Seattle. If Garland goes, it probably won't be until sometime next year. If Kenny is serious about making another run next year, he's going to need Jon.
  19. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 11:38 AM) The bullpen is the key. Rip Uribe all you want. The only 2 SS in the AL with more RBI than him since the beginning of 2004 are Tejada and Jeter, and Uribe is solid defensively. I'm as frustrated as anyone by his lack of OBP, but its proven that the Sox can win with him at SS. Its also been proven that the Sox won when they had a great bullpen. The bullpen has to be strong, except if they play the Angels in the ALCS. Uribe=very good defensively except when he plays lackadaisical, which he does from time to time Uribe= good power, but a very undisciplined hitter Uribe is still better than many, but if we could get Tejada I would take him in a second. I could stand one more year of Uribe, despite his poor plate discipline. Pencil him in at the bottom of the lineup and let him do his thing on the field.
  20. QUOTE(iamshack @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 10:04 AM) I honestly am close to buying into Jerry Owens. He's showed glimpses of power I didn't know he had (especially the opposite field gapper he hit the other day), he's taking pitches well, he obviously can steal bases, and he can bunt. He's played a solid center field. Obviously I would have preferred Brian to be the one to be our future at CF because of his considerable defensive skills, but he isn't going to get that chance. Given what Owens has shown us and how he has improved, I'd rather give him the gig than exhaust our limited resources bringing in someone who would do a similar job. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 10:10 AM) Whether people here like it or not, if all Owens does is hit .270 or above the rest of this season, he's shown enough to be a starting OF next year for the Sox. +1 He may not be a long-term solution, but I could stand Owens as a stop-gap in CF next year. Especially considering the bolded point about our needs elsewhere.
  21. QUOTE(max power @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 09:46 AM) Why resign buerhle if you are going to to full rebuild mode? He is going into "patch it up" mode. DING, DING, DING! We have a winner.
  22. QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 09:08 AM) 75.4% of Glavine's starts, 76.2% of Clemen's starts and a whopping 78.2% of Maddux's starts were decisions. In their primes, the number was even more ridiculous. From 1986-1992, Clemens made 237 starts and 84% of them were decisions. You will never see numbers like that again over a 7 year span. Maddux has an 82% decision/start ratio from 1988-1993. That sounds more like opinion than fact. Middle relief and closers also add years onto the arms of starters. If you want to believe that nobody will get to 300 wins again, be my guest. Somebody will likely prove you wrong within the next 20 years.
  23. QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 07:18 PM) What pitcher besides Randy Johnson has a realistic shot at 300? No one, unless they play until they are 50. What are you talking about? Clemens, Maddux, and Glavine all did it within the past couple of years. With continuing innovation/emphasis in conditioning, nutrition, and supplements (legal and otherwise), why is it such a stretch to believe that 300 victories will be attainable down the line? Perhaps not by Mark, Santana, Oswalt, or Zito, but there will be others. I agree that 300 wins shouldn't be a requirement for the HOF. But, geez, you make it sound like it's going to be impossible in the future.
  24. I'll believe it when I see it, but it's not like Kenny isn't the type to make bold moves. If he can re-tool effectively, I think that they have a legitimate shot next year. But that window of opportunity will be closing quickly thereafter.
  25. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 04:53 PM) If Jose is traded and Tejada and Dye are added, then you will need 3 starting pitchers to be traded, because trading Jose does not clear salary. I'd be shocked if KW dealt Jose in the off-season. The Sox would have to eat about 60-75% of his remaining salary. Hopefully JC can get off to a good start in April and KW can dump his salary for a pack of Big League Chew.
