QUOTE(hi8is @ Jul 11, 2006 -> 01:14 PM) so instead of paying 5 million and losing bmac, youd rather pay the giants about 18 million to take vazquez and give 5 million to schmidt... so.... basicly, your rather pay 23 million dollars for 3 - 4 months of hason schmidt as a white sox starter IIRC, Vazquez is only signed through '07. I don't know where you're getting that $18 million figure from. Yes, I'd rather pay $10 million to dump Vazquez and keep McCarthy than lose McCarthy and pay $18 million to a guy who doesn't have the mental makeup to pitch effectively in the AL.

Didn't Griffey refuse a trade to the Yankees years ago and got death threats because of it? It seems to me that he probably wouldn't be interested in going there. And I don't see the Reds trading Dunn, either.

QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Jul 11, 2006 -> 10:06 AM) www.mlbtraderumors.com has a big story about it. I dont know about trading Anderson and Bmac. I'm not sure that KW would want to deal B-Mac for a 33-year-old pitcher who is a free agent next season and will cost the Sox almost $5 million this season. I wouldn't mind him sending Vazquez over to SF, even if the Sox have to eat half of his contract, but that's probably just a pipe dream.

QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 02:51 PM) Before last year I would totally agree with you. We had the absolute worst time in Boston last year. They took "our s*** don't stink cause we're the world champs" way too far. They've been dumped on so hard by Yankees fans over the years that they've actually become worse, IMO. At the risk of generalizing, people from New York tend to be loud and arrogant, while people from Boston tend to be more cynical and nasty.

QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Jul 6, 2006 -> 01:31 PM) Yeah, Buehrle never has been a mid-90's fastballer. Garcia used to be. And now that his is hitting 87-90, hes screwed. Not necessarily. He'll need to change his approach if he ever wants to be dominant again, but saying that he's "screwed" is a bit short-sighted. Freddy wasn't throwing mid-90's fastballs last year and still managed to pitch pretty well.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 6, 2006 -> 12:50 PM) Buehrle is a control pitcher though, he has amazing natural life to his pitches which allows him to throw 86 but Freddy is just not cut out to be a control guy. If he doesn't have that 94-95 MPH heat to get him out of the tough situation, he's not going to be all that successful. His inconsistency has been proof of this. Buehrle can throw a fastball through a teacup with his insane control, Freddy just doesn't have that kind of command. Also Freddy is more in the 87-90 MPH range, he can reach back for 92-93 but it seems like he's sitting around 87 now a days. I was being facetious about Beuhrle. Apologies for not using green. Perhaps my memory is failing me, but I don't recall Freddy throwing in the mid-90's consistently since '04. He seemed to be in the low '90s a lot last season and did just fine. You're right about him having two different fast ball "gears", though. He throws harder when he gets into trouble.

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jul 6, 2006 -> 10:50 AM) We all know Jon is not the strongest in the brain department Sadly, Javy seems to be even worse in this category. QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Jul 6, 2006 -> 11:23 AM) On a side note, I fear Garcia may be toast. His 89 MPH fastball just won't cut it, no matter what team you are on. Then I guess that Buehrle is toast as well, because that's right around where he maxes out. Freddy's fastball isn't the problem (he's in the 89-92 mph range most of the time) - he gets into trouble when he can't locate his hook and falls behind in counts.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 07:50 PM) Because when the Dems did it that way, running guys like Gephardt and Daschle at the top of each house of Congress and big business fundraising guys like Macauliffe at the top of the DNC, the results were a Bush White House and a Republican House, Senate, and Supreme Court. No matter who is at the top for the Dems, the Republicans are going to paint them as out of touch whackos unless they agree with the President on virtually everything. Listen to the inflammatory rhetoric coming out of Howard Dean's mouth and tell me who is making him look like an "out of touch whacko." Rush? Fox News? Bulls***. When people like Dean, Pelosi, Durbin, and Murtha do their Michael Moore impersonations on the floor of the House or Senate, they're doing so on their own. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 6, 2006 -> 05:35 AM) Ohhhhhh, but we must have an alternative, and the Dems have to go to an extreme to be different then the Republicans. All those years of MTV has rotted their brains.

With 99.61% of the count complete, Calderon leads by a whopping 0.47%. Wow, this is going to be tied up in the courts forever. :headshake

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 04:24 PM) Well it seems to me that the preliminary totals were off if anything. But I'm not going to claim that I really have any idea what's going on down south. I'm sure that there's plenty of corruption on both sides.
-
Interesting. Well, if Obrador does indeed win, he'll most likely align himself with Castro and Chavez. And that might give our government less incentive to "make nice" with the Mexican government and to more proactively guard our southern border.

QUOTE(My Dixie Normus @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 12:31 PM) What the hell was so impressive about thier June? Lose 2 of 3 to Boston. Lose 2 of 3 to CWS. Lose 1 of 3 to Tor. Then kick the livin day lights out of the NL. In May it was much the same story. Lose 2 of 3 to MIN. (not playing thier best ball at the time) Split w/Balt. (1 Rainout) Swept by the Yankees. When they play good teams, they lose. They are about to hit a patch where they are going to run into a string of good (or hot) teams. Well, let's see... their starting pitching was outstanding and they won something like 20 games. And, BTW, "only" taking 2 of 3 from Toronto isn't a negative. The Jays (47-36) aren't exactly a bad team. They certainly haven't matched up well against the elite teams in the AL, but they don't have the best record and best ERA in the league because they suck.

End of the Tigers, my ass. These guys have a lot of talent and are not going to fall off the face of the earth after the ASB. That said, I'm interested to see how Verlander and Rogers pitch in August and September. And if Maroth is still having elbow issues, they're (apparently) going to be relying on Miner down the stretch.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 08:31 AM) If the liberal wing of the party succeeds in seizing control of their affairs and platform then they are toast come November. Their only shot to capture either house of Congress is to present themselves as a centrist outfit. The Howard Dean wing of the party will lose them seats. That's true to a certain extent. For example, if Lieberman doesn't get on the ticket, a Republican will take his seat in CT. However, something tells me that Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy aren't going anywhere. But, overall, I agree that they won't win nearly as many seats if they put far-left candidates on the ballots. I'm still dumbfounded as to why the Dems are moving in this direction. The Republicans in a vulnerable position right now, but the strategy of putting nuts like Dean and Pelosi in high-ranking and high-visibility positions is not going to help them take advantage of that.
-
QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 08:24 AM) To say nothing of the fact that you have Vicente Fox down there who seems to think that exporting poverty to the United States is the answer to at least some of their problems. I somehow doubt his successor will be a whole lot better regardless of who gets in. I'd rather see his successor elected than his socialist opponent.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 06:47 PM) He's a 2 pitch pitcher. He would not be a good starter. ^^^ On top of that, reliable lefties in the 'pen are very valuable and the Sox will be under control of his contract for at least a few more years.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 11:18 PM) Well there's counting votes improperly corrupt and killing off people in the other party corrupt. When they had the one party state, option 2 corrupt was happening in conjunction with option 1. Which, again, is no shocker. This is Mexico we're talking about. The military protects the drug cartels. American tourists are regularly kidnapped for ransom by thugs or pulled over and robbed by the police. It's a sad state of affairs down there. :headshake
-
What an awful situation. I hope that the two sides can reach some sort of a compromise.
-
QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 11:53 AM) You really don't know much about Mexican elections. They have been notoriously corrupt in the past Anybody who knows the least bit about Mexican politics could've guessed that.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 01:15 PM) Take this statement: When speaking about Grand Theft Auto, he said, "The player is rewarded for attacking a woman, pushing her to the ground, kicking her repeatedly and then ultimately killing her, shooting her over and over again. I call on the entertainment companies--they've got a right to do that, but they have a responsibility not to do it if we want to raise the next generation of our sons to treat women with respect." There's nothing wrong with a politician telling the entertainment industry that desentisitizing children to violence could have very serious repercussions. Lieberman says nothing about banning those games in that quote - in fact, he says that they have "the right" to do so. And since you were a child at one point, you know that there are all sorts of ways to get around mommy and daddy's rules. My parents never kept pornography in the house, but that didn't stop me of going to my friend's house and watching those movies on Saturday mornings when I was 11. Censorship for all is obviously not the answer but, given the caliber of "parents" in this day and age, some government oversight regarding public decency may not be the wost thing in the world. BTW, agreed about the Judas Priest issue, but I don't believe that Lieberman had anything to do with that.
-
QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 11:40 AM) 1. His insane belief that music caused the violent events like Columbine and his hardon for musical/television/cinematic/video game censorship of things that he does not like...and going about trying to legislate his morality for the entire country. Nobody believes that music or video games caused events like Columbine. But most people agree that it's not in an 8-year-old's best interest to be listening to gangsta rap. And most people (not just the religious right) also believe in public decency standards. Lieberman is conservative for a Democrat, but he's not exactly Rick Santorum. BTW, the comparison to Zell Miller is ridiculous. Those two have nothing in common.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 10:19 AM) So if he wants a guaranteed spot in the general, why doesn't he bow out of the Primary right now and just run as an independent? He could do that, assure that he won't change who he caucuses with, and probably set up a huge victory for himself in November. But he won't do that because he needs the help of the Democratic party to win in a competitive race. And he knows that it would be much easier to win under the Dem banner than the independent banner, because he could rely on the Democratic Party's ground team. Because he wouldn't have to face a serious challenge in the general. So, you're accusing Joe of being an opportunist. Was Hillary also an opportunist when she decided to move to New York for a chance to take Moynihan's spot in the Senate? How would Jack Murtha's constituents feel about the ex-moderate becoming a whore for the far-left base of the party to procure another term in Congress? You're correct that Lieberman's not doing a good job of toeing the party line right now. Then again, he's under no obligation to do so.
-
QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 09:30 AM) How would you like to be a Democrat in Connecticut and have your senator say, I don't care how you vote. If you decide you want change, I won't honor your wishes? WTF are you talking about? If Dems want change, they can elect what's-his-face in the primary and make Lieberman run as an Independent or "Petitioning Democrat" or whatever. He's a man running for office. Why is it so important that he declare an affiliation?
-
The Dems need widely-respected moderates like Lieberman if they want to win back Congress or the White House. If the more liberal wing of their party is going to throw a fit because Joe would rather run as an independent than pander to them via Murtha-esque anti-Iraq temper tantrums, it's their loss.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 3, 2006 -> 01:08 PM) You mentioned a guy who shouldn't even be brought up this season in Hermanson, the 6th guy out of the pen in Clifford and the biggest question mark in Thornton. What about Cotts? He has playoff experience and has been pretty damn solid this season. How about Riske? The guy has a ton of previous success on good teams and has pitched well for the Sox thus far. Right now the Sox have 4 guys in the pen who can be counted on at all times (Jenks, BMac, Cotts, Riske) with Thornton knocking on the door. I don't see it as being a huge concern right now. I was remiss in leaving Cotts out of there. He was awesome last year and is doing well again this season after somewhat of a shaky start. I'm not sure about Riske, though. His career numbers are impressive, but he also has a reputation for folding under pressure. I'd like to see more out of him in a Sox uniform before declaring that he can be "counted on at all times." I still think that this 'pen needs another arm to replace Politte who, despite pitching a scoreless inning last night, is pretty much worthless at this point. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 07:28 AM) The best bullpen in baseball would not do a dam thing for you if the starters are giving up 5-8 runs in a start. That's true. I don't see that being the norm for the rest of the season, though. There's too much talent in this rotation for all of them to continue under-performing like this.
