This drives me nuts about my journalism school...

A pirate walks into a bar with this enormous steering wheel stuck down his pants. The bartender can't help but ask: "What's with the wheel?" The pirate replies: "Arrrggh. It's drivin' me nuts." enjoy. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 16, 2008 -> 12:28 PM) I'll start off by saying that I scanned only the first page of the article you linked. But, my question was what was the constitutional basis for the decision, or even hearing the case. I was under the impression that SCOTUS is there for the sole purpose of determining the constitutionality of an issue. basically: black people like crack white/hispanics like coke because the sentencing for crack dealers is more strick, this is racial bias. Therefore, the SCOTUS decided that the sentencing judge will have discretion. That was PA's summation of the news, brought to you by Pfizer.

Apparently I'm not alone in my frustrations... I will be participating in this eBay boycott.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 16, 2008 -> 12:01 PM) I am perfectly comfortable. I realize that both ends of the political spectrum can read the same passage and arrive at totally different meanings That sounds like the beginning of a Democratic nanny state I think Jesus would have been considered a liberal today, but the GOP has grabbed that card and painted him a conservative. And we're both right correct but he was also a libertarian.

off shoot of the online v. real life. how do you describe this place to people? From time to time (ok...ALL the time) I talk about something that happens...but there's always a preface: "So there's this white sox message board that I talk on but never about white sox stuff...and.... happened" what's yours?

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 16, 2008 -> 11:28 AM) I very close friends of mine was lurking in a few threads and she commented that I have a completely different personality online than I do in "real life". Thinking over the past couple years of face to face conversations, and excluding my lying, cheating, ex-wife I have been in a total of one argument where I even raised my voice. Most people in real life will say I have the patience of a Saint. Usually I am the jester in the corner egging people on and telling jokes. So I'm starting to wonder, are online forums and such a chance to act out in ways you would not face to face, are they an outlet for areas in your life you can not otherwise express, are some people just bad at written communications? In other words, why am I the angry asshole on the boards and a sweetheart in real life, including on the telephone? I think there's just a lot of our personalities that don't translate well to our "e-life". First of all, I would guess that a lot of physical traits would alter the interactions here... aside from our resident sped, gp , I think most people would stop and listen to each other, espcially to the elder individuals and respect what you have to say. I'm sure there'd be some level of sarcasm, but not to the levels we see here. I would guess that also that anonymity draws out extreme behaviors. People here are more willing to say big things that I would bet if the person they were calling out were standing right in front of them. And lastly, for the sake of discussion, I for one take more extreme positions to read people's responses. I'm not saying I egg people on or bait them, but I'm not nearly as fundementalist as I might come off to people. I just like challenging. We're all a subset of some larger group, because we're willing to participate in this online community and share a bit of ourselves. Not everyone is comfortable with that or have a desire to discuss/learn/argue, etc. anyway, just my buck three fifty.

If you thought the subprime mortgage crisis was bad...

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Feb 16, 2008 -> 09:00 AM) But, at the end of the day, if this woman had an ounce of self-control, this whole situation wouldn't have happened. and a dealership willing to help her commit fraud. -
I didn't get the blatant advertising spin from that article. Unless he's a Fick Suck I don't see how he's using the situation...he admitted that he got threats. meh. sounds more like he just had good SEO on his website and if you're looking for glock ammunition he's got it.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 16, 2008 -> 12:23 AM) Consider this contructive criticism. By you taking care of all the finances you are doing her a disservice. If something happens to you 5 years from now, she's going to be completely lost and totally stressed if she has to deal with it. The financial issues should be, on regular basis, a team effort. For example, every month, you both sit down and work out the budget. Eh ... you get my drift. It's only my opinion, but it's one I feel strongly about. you're 100% right. I see that a lot with elderly couples...why is it that the survivor always is the one without the financial experience? we've only been married for 8 months and it's something I plan on doing when she finishes school in July and gets her first real job.

QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 05:50 PM) I knew you were. Just making a statement Sometimes I need to get on my soapbox. lol I cant say it to them, so i need to get it off my chest. lol oh man, preach it then. I don't like stressing my wife out with the details of finances. I manage the check book and pay all the bills, set up a mutual fund, have two active savings accounts, 401ks, eliminating the debt and after all of that, I say...go out and spend whatever. It seems to work so far.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 06:36 PM) When she told the salesperson her income, he would have known she would not qualify. The only way for him to make that sales was to A. Get her to write down what she believed she would be earning as soon as she was off disability and B. To then change the number even higher after she signed the contract But if you are stupid enough to go along with the salesperson, you deserve what you get. dude, tex, we're sorry your sister got duped into buying this car... drop it -
It's the human condition and every people group manifests the brokeness differently.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 05:09 PM) And since we're all pointing at the thing that bugs us the most, I'll point again at the fact that someone approved this loan without bothering to actually verify the income, thus allowing the fraud to take place due to simple laziness or due to that no longer being the job of anyone in the system. very good point. A pay stub should have been supplied....but IIRC, they usually only do these things by credit check, which at best will give you your score and maybe debt to income. Haven't bought a car in a while, so I don't know. at the bank, we'd want pay stubs, definitely. -
QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 06:02 PM) Violence??? Sex??? Have you seen Japanese movies? Anime? I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I'm just saying some of the same s*** and maybe even worse happens in other countries and from the stats posted before...Japanese people aren't going around shooting people at the same rate. Education, education, education. Change the culture...that's the only way. No, the Japanese are just committing suicide at mindblowing rates. but you're right about education.
