QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 04:10 PM) Deadline's officially past. If nothing comes out soon, it looks like KW's great rebuilding/retooling effort during the 2007 season consisted of giving away two solid position players for Single A relievers that are likely to never reach the majors. It could have been worse, no? He could have traded for Bo Bice.

I love this deal.... Another big man moves to the east. Minnesota gets some youth. My spurs will win again, however.

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 10:59 AM) Here's an aside. How much positive news could there be? The standard of living for most Iraqis is not getting better? The amount of electricity that the average Iraqi had is not just down since Saddam left power, its down since the beginning of the year. So much so that the US government won't report those figures anymore. The star of the Iraqi national Soccer team has asked for refuge in another country because he fears for his life in Iraq. Iraqi refugees make up double digit percentages of the population in Syria and Jordan. The Iraqi government still hasn't passed any legislation that might lead to peace in the region, like issues regarding oil revenue sharing. And they just took another one month vacation without acheiving any of the benchmarks that we've asked them to tackle. Even if the violence cuts by half between now and September, how is it acceptable for us to sit there and prop up a failed state? Just a side comment, but didn't you say you're working for a Democrat rep now? Just wondering how much spin I need to wade through in your posts.

Gwynn, Ripken are HOF Class of 2007
sox4lifeinPA replied to sox4lifeinPA's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 03:55 PM) One must also consider other SS. Ripken wasn't like Ozzie Smith who would dazzle you with defensive range but, Ripken was a vacuum when it came within his range. Plus, he changed the position from light hitting defensive guys to bigger, more powerful players. He paved the way for the Tejada's, Renteria's and Jeter's of present day baseball. He's got to be pretty damn high on the list of HR's and hits for SS, as well. Accumulation stats are just as impressive. Shoot, players sneeze and are out for 15 days. Ripken played in 16+ seasons STRAIGHT!!! That's frickin' impressive. Finally, Ripken did more for the game of baseball than his stats would ever show. Both he AND Gwynn are ambassadors of the game, playing it the right way (except for Gwynn's weight...). Ripken was one of the top 5 recognizable players for a time. Gwynn is probably top 5-10 best pure hitters ever to play. They both deserve it. agreed. The point is he's THE ONLY guy to do what he's done. "If it weren't for the streak".... How many guys would have monster numbers if they could stay consistent or stay healthy? Ripken was both. He was no A-Rod, but he's better than 95% of the other guys. Geez, if ONLY there were players as consistant as Ripken was these days. -

I don't have anything to say about Paris Hilton, per se... but I do find it extremely homoerotic and very questionable that posters have oiled up pictures of wrestlers in their signatures. /PA's thought for the day. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 03:29 PM) Loved Gwynn. I was never a real big Ripken fan though, he played in a s*** load of games, congrats. 3184 hits and 431 home runs.... 14th and 37th all time. -
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 29, 2007 -> 12:59 AM) Watched Poolhall Junkies today. Never even heard of it before today but my roommate had it so I gave it a watch. I really enjoyed it. I liked that movie when it was called "Rounders" or ten other movies... But like most s***ty movies, the director calls in Chris Walken at the last minute to bail the movie out.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 02:27 PM) I think its gonna be interesting. Supposedly the entire film was shot on handheld videocameras, and its supposed to be Godzilla meets War of the Worlds. Im a sucker for that type of stuff, so I will probably like it yeah, probably worth one watch...novelty will be gone after that.

Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 29th in Cooperstown Tony Gwynn, who won eight batting titles, and Cal Ripken Jr., who played in a record 2,632 consecutive games, were elected to the Hall of Fame in January by the baseball writers. Ripken received 98.5% of the vote, Gwynn 97.6%. The pair will be inducted during Hall of Fame Weekend, July 27-30. How do 1.5% and 2.4% of the ballots not include these guys? They're epitome of 80s & 90s baseball? as Colin Cowherd says, "you can't tell the story of..." baseball without Cal Ripken, Jr or Tony Gwynn.
