  1. QUOTE(knightni @ Feb 2, 2008 -> 10:39 AM) He played 5 1/2 seasons in Chicago, less than half of his 13 year career. Yes, he was good, but he's not statue-worthy. The only reason he's known is for 1919. To clarify some ambiguity: You mean the only reason he's known as a White Sox is because of that World Series, right? Unlike, say, Chick Gandil, who is probably known only for that? Jackson was incredible. Ruth modelled his swing and approach on him. Cobb thought he'd hit .400 every year with the live ball.
  2. Vizcaino is, I think, unfaily maligned. He was a solid arm for us altogether.
  3. I have nothing else to add to a conversation about whether or not Brian Anderson is, or ever has been, right up there with the greatest defensive centerfielders in the history of the game.
  4. Possibly terrorism. Perhaps a "signal" to someone. Likely an accident, but interesting all the same. al-Qaeda has strange ways of signalling things, but I wouldn't guess that's what this is.
  5. I've heard other metrics that have ranked him good-to-middle, my eyes tell me one thing and the basic common sense that if he were the second coming of young Andruw Jones he'd play everyday as so many other no-glove defensive masters have done over the years, from Mazeroski to Smith to Jones (last season).
  6. Anderson's good in CF but he's no better than hundreds of guys who have been very good in CF.
  7. Why is their methodology and criteria valid to you, here, but not with other things? Just playing devil's advocate. (Just for the record, their list doesn't pass the "smell test" to me.)
  8. QUOTE(iamshack @ Feb 1, 2008 -> 09:30 AM) Yes. And that's what Baseball Propectus was saying also...well, actually, they were saying that his defense, according to their metrics, was the best in the history of the game. Those sort of statements, combined with what I saw with my own eyes...yes, that's what I believe. I didn't know that you put such faith into Baseball Prospectus.
  9. I know everyone's all over Minnesota about not getting good value or whatever, or losing out on what people believe are better offers from other organizations, but I'm not better at scouting than the Minnesota Twins and neither are you, Dear Reader and Critic of the Twins. Now I'm not saying that they've analyzed correctly -- just that before conventional wisdom takes over and says the Twins hosed themselves, we should remember that the Twins are the best in baseball at scouting, scouting everyone at every level precisely. I'll wait and see before I call Smith an idiot.
  10. I see the winning tradition is alive and well in Dallas.
  11. I've almost finished the script for the Fiction, and have almost got all the arrangements I'll need for the documentary. It felt good to sit down this morning and get over the hump with the screenplay.
  12. Well, Brady isn't Dilfur or anything; he didn't get carried through the Bowl or career. In all fairness. I am excited to see this provoke such interesting response and passion, even if I disagree with the majority. I'm surpirsed more and more with how often I agree with Soxbadger these days.
  13. We won't sign Sabathia and we won't be in the running; at least not seriously. That's about right, I think.
  14. I was hoping for a great modern love story. ;___;
  15. QUOTE(Soxy @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 01:09 PM) Is USD hiring? Because I would take a job there. For wite?!
  16. Alright, so this is more work than I anticipated, and just when I realized that and decided that even with all the work I'm fine because it's working out really well and everything's coming together, I decided it'll be a good idea to make a second film, a documentary, completely unrelated to the fiction film I'm working on. And I decide that I want to be done by late March or very early April at latest. It'll be done, but I've got much to do.
  17. QUOTE(Soxy @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 02:17 PM) Okay, no win for me. I had one student last semester. Always came to office hours. I literally kept a zip up hoodie by my desk for when he visited. Kid was one of the worst gawkers I've had. Wow.
  18. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 09:17 AM) Dude I can totally act. I can't even tell you how many people think I'm a nice guy. Haha.
  19. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 07:08 PM) That all depends on how your scouts rate Phil Hughes. It is always about the scouts -- and especially so in Minnesota. That said, it might be more to do with how they rate the other guys from the Mets or from the Yankees or from the Red Sox than with Hughes, although it is possible that they weren't and aren't high on him.
  20. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 07:21 PM) Dye and Quentin have a history of injuries. Owens, the jury is still out on. KW put all his eggs in the BA basket in 2006. His head appears to be together now. The question remains, can you get a legitmate guy for him? If you can't why give him away? Being 5th or 6th on the OF chart hardly means you have no shot. What was Owens on the chart coming into 2007? What was Jenks on the chart of closers coming into 2005? Emergency plan #1
  21. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 06:36 PM) Trading a guy for a bunch of garbage because he will be out of options next year would be silly. Unless there is some way the trade will bring back someone who can help in 2008, or if its a precurser to a Coco Crisp deal or something like that, there is absolutely no reason the White Sox should trade Anderson. If the return would be like the one they received for Aardsma, gaining players who would be lucky to get past AA, it makes zero sense. The White Sox have a lot invested with Anderson. Maybe he's turned a corner. This is where we disagree; I just don't think he can hit, and I know I'm not alone in that assessment. This is where great scouts and player analysts come in handy, though: if KW makes a move, it would be nice if he had guys who he knows will be real accurate or not accurate at all on Anderson's future. I don't know if he can hit, but I don't think so and he hasn't shown much.
