Game thread Sox(73-50) at Detroit(79-45)
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 07:18 PM) Another HBP scores. Its pretty incredible how many score. He loses his spiff every time he hits someone.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 07:13 PM) I've been so impressed with Pierre the last 3 months or so. A lot of people knock the guy because of his arm (and it really is awful -- worse than Podsednik's) but he plays hard, uses his speed and runs down everything. I think he's actually a very good centerfielder, arm notwithstanding. Oh, yeah, he also doesn't pout or become reticent when things go bad (like several of our guys, including the starting left-fielder). He has zero pop and doesn't walk much, but he's a damn good baseball player.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 07:11 PM) No, but he could have made it closer, and if he had a reputation of running hard, he could cause a bobble once in a while. Dead-on right. I've seen Juan Pierre cause quite a few mistakes this year just because he busts his ass, and has a reputation for doing so.

QUOTE(G&T @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 07:10 PM) He's the worst fast guy in baseball. At this time he has no value.

Pods is the slowest fast guy in baseball.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 07:06 PM) Pods gonna f*** up a huge RBI chance and make me hate him even more. C'mon Pods, this is the one thing you've been good at this year.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 06:56 PM) That might as well be titled "The Scott Podsednik Impact Stat" Last year, Podsednik consistently slapped the ball over the 3rd baseman's head for a hit. I don't think I've seen too much of that this year.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 06:54 PM) Verlander retires 7 in a row Think how well he'd be doing if he hadn't racked up all those innings this year.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 06:52 PM) Wow. 2 great hitters counts and jack s***. 2-0 to PK - foul 3-1 to PK- weak groundout Paulie, once again not getting down on himself. Quick question: when's the last time we manufactured a run?

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 06:51 PM) PK with 1 HR in August That's because Gload's played in about half of the games, right?

That 3-1 pitch to Thome is one he needs to clobber. The guy's just not right up there.

QUOTE(CYGarland @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 06:47 PM) I think it might be time to platoon him with Mack Yep, no left-fielder against lefties. Our defense might actually improve.

Memo to Jose: Please stop hanging the sidearm pitch. Thanks much. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 06:45 PM) Pods does bring the nicest looking date to the team party though. I saw Pods and his lovely bride at the Hunt Club last week during lunch. She had no make-up on and still was on fire. Just curious, was Pods wearing pants?

I can't take it anymore...
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 04:52 PM) The team ERA was the same as Cleveland's in today's paper. And Cleveland's staff and ours were supposed to be 1 & 2 in the league, based on last year. Ah, baseball . . . Does anyone know if Shannon Stewart is coming back for Minnesota? Because, I'll tell you, if he is, I think if you put the Sox and Twins side-by-side, I'm not so sure that their team isn't just as good as ours, top-to-bottom, pitching included. That's a damn good team. So there's no embarassment in being neck and neck with them (even though our team doesn't seem to TREAT them like they are neck and neck in the standings; just a feeling I get, and not a good one). All I'd like to see is some consistent sense of energy and focus out there. I don't see that. And I do see an over-reliance on guys who are likely to kill this team before it's all said and done, like Vazquez in the rotation and Mack in center. That's just not smart. Teams who don't have other choices get murdered by these guys; we do have other choices, and the consistent reliance on these guys, in these spots, is just foolish. Finally, if I hear Ozzie say one more time, that if you win 95 games and don't make it, so be it . . . I hope he's just trying to take pressure off of his team, because this is the American League, and you might have to win 1, 2 or even 5 more than 95 to get in. I think we can do it. The other teams all have flaws. And the Tigers really have struggled. They were very fortunate to get out of Boston without losing that series.

I swear to God, if Ozzie says that "Javy pitched good" . . .

QUOTE(Friend of Nordhagen @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 02:58 PM) Something tells me Santana would've gotten that pitch. And Javy's response, as always, is to throw one right down the middle. Nice body language, too. Send him to Charlotte for the AAA playoffs. No, wait. If I were the manager of Charlotte, I'd only want guys who know how to PITCH.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 02:54 PM) You laugh, but he would. He did. He pitched for the Yankees in 2004. He was awful. If memory serves, he gave up the home run to Johnny Damon in Game 7 of the ALCS.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 02:50 PM) With how crappy we've played in the last week, I'm THRILLED we still have the lead in the WC right now. Think about it, though. If Vazquez goes out there twice in any week, you're already on the ropes.
