I think Contreras is going to bounce back with a huge game.

QUOTE(bmags @ Apr 9, 2007 -> 05:33 PM) i went to a pedro v. sox game, he was tough all game, we were down 4-2 bases loaded, pedro v. frank thomas. It was like a 17 pitch at bat and it was epic, pedro finally k's him with a wicked breaking pitch. But frank knocked pedro out of the game, and Joe Crede hit a 3 run homer the next inning, we won 5-4 i think. It was a great game, one of my favorites in attendence. I was there and also remember that Thomas v Pedro battle.

I'm not sure on this, but a Cubs fan friend told me one benefit of keeping Prior in the minors all year as opposed to the big club DL, is that the Cubs extend ownership of him for another season. Prior's scheduled to become a FA after the 2008 season, but if he rehabs in the minors all year, he won't become a FA until 2009. Either way, it's comical the Cubs are paying him almost $4 million this season.

QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Apr 9, 2007 -> 12:28 PM) Anybody hear Brennaman and Grace discussing the Twins organization and how Gardenhire and his staff go about coaching fundamentals from the minors on up. This formula has worked so well for the Twins, why haven't more teams gone to it. Can't we dig up a minor league coach in the Twins organization and bring him over with a promotion. Get our young hitters to use the right approach at the dish. That's a great idea. Tom Kelly would bring a nice organizational change.

QUOTE(Wedge @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 08:09 PM) I read this bit on another board and I thought I heard someone on a sports radio channel discussing it over the weekend. True or false? I believe he's in minor league camp located in Mesa, Arizona. He's on the 7-day disabled list due to "shoulder stiffness" and if he doesn't feel able to pitch after that stint, will return to the 7-day DL. http://desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll...2/70405036/1003

QUOTE(G&T @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 01:53 PM) Uribe swings at a ball over his head. 1-2 strikes out on a good change. Uribe has no clue of the strike zone. It's so frustrating.

Good thread idea.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 11:31 AM) Maybe give Thome a day off, slide Paulie to DH and let Darin play 1st, Pablo in LF and Brian in center? Or, let Pablo DH? God, that feels weird to type. I like it, and it allows Guillen to pinch hit Thome whenever he pleases.

QUOTE(Craig Grebeck @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 07:19 PM) I just found it incredible that there was a tough lefty up in the eighth and Ozzie didn't even give Brian an AB. Get his ass in Charlotte if you're not going to play him. I understand it worked out in the end, but there was no reason not to give him an opportunity. If he's the CF of the future, He needs more than 1 AB every four games. Maybe Guillen will use BA in '07 like he used G-Load in '06.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 09:15 AM) I went to Steve and Barry's the other day and got a white pair of them, $16.10 with tax!!! Anyways, they must be selling well because even though like 1/5 of the store was full of them, there were still a boatload of emptying shelves and a sign that said you could only buy 10 pairs max (I'd have bought more than 1 pair but I don't really need shoes right now, haha). Anyways, I got them Monday and have made 2 runs at the rec center here in them and they are actually quite comfortable as well as looking good. So, in conclusion, this might be the best idea to hit the stores since.....well a long time. I need a new pair of hoop shoes and this seems like a no brainer to me. I try to buy hoop shoes regularly in effort to save my ankles from getting rolled again. I'll definitely pick up the Wallace's too when released.

Yeah, that did remind me of a 2005 win. Vazquez has got to be player of the game. Nice work by the bullpen too, and good bullpen management by Guillen. Podsednik's stolen base threat and speed equal a nice insurance run. I think I'm going to like Erstad.

that's a strike.

QUOTE(HeGone33 @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 05:31 PM) I think he did, his foot snapped when he first slid and it snapped and hit it, my 95 inch TV doesn't lie. Projector?

It's plays like the one Podsednik scored on that the saber community hasn't been able to quantify.

QUOTE(max power @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 05:05 PM) Anybody can like it when they combine for a shutout. And I compliment him on making the pitching decisions that allow for that shutout.

I like how Guillen is running his pitching staff so far today.

Great game by Vazquez.

I hope Guillen has someone warming up in the bullpen.

Well he's been looking good today.

QUOTE(WCSox @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 03:22 PM) I have a better idea: Let's wait until Contreras sucks for a few straight starts. Or, better yet, TWO straight starts before declaring that he's done. I never said he was done. In fact, I said the opposite.
-
QUOTE(WCSox @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 03:16 PM) Buehrle has mediocre stuff, has thrown 200+ innings for six straight years, and lost 5 mph off of his fastball last season. How does that make him a better Season Opener option than Contreras? That's neither here nor there. Let's stay on topic: Is Contreras's career done?
-
QUOTE(Wedge @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 02:03 PM) So you knew that Contreras would give up 8 runs in 1+ innings? I'm on record saying Buehrle or Garland should have been the Opening Day starter. I did not forecast Contreras's horrible line, but am willing to assume Buehrle or JG would have pitched better. If Buehrle pitches on Opening Day, he likely doesn't get hit with a liner off his pitching arm. Shoota = 1; Guillen = 0; Ozney = still hustlin' for that 250k+ salary. QUOTE(WCSox @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 02:26 PM) LOL, the anti-Ozzie sentiment is off-the-charts ridiculous here. Here's my question: Is Buehrle "done" as well because he was throwing an 86 mph fastball during the latter half of last season? I think that it would be best to give these guys a few more starts to strengthen their arms and shake off the rust before declaring that their careers are over. Two of the three reasons I started this thread asking if Contreras is done are due to his archaic age and recent injury. Buehrle has neither of those characteristics, therefore no thread asking if his career is over.
-
QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 11:12 AM) Maybe we should ask the question after the season? Include Mark Buerehle and others in that. You can't make such judgements based on one game, or even a couple three games. It's over a season or more. I wasn't inspired to start this thread after one game, but after his poor performing, injured second-half of 2006 combined with an offseason of rest and his pitiful Opening Day 2007 performance. That said, I'm certainly not calling Contreras's career over.
-
QUOTE(Al Lopez @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 10:38 AM) Well, you wouldn't want to give a guy, say, TWO starts this season before you write him off? I haven't written him off. I merely posed the question to hear the thoughts of knowledgeable Sox fans.
