  1. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 06:51 PM) But you're ignoring that even conservative justices have agreed that there IS a right to abortions per Roe v. Wade, it's the amount of restrictions that are in question. Thomas is anti-Roe. Scalia was too. Alito and Roberts both take a position where they say they respect precedent but basically think it's a bad decision, so they're not completely unwilling to overturn it. And again, Trump can nominate people more like Scalia. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 06:51 PM) If you have restrictions that don't allow for any abortions at all, that's a ban and I don't think even the conservative justices would agree to it. The restriction itself doesn't have to actually ban abortion, only make it sufficiently difficult to the point where clinics don't want to stay open. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 06:51 PM) On the gay point, he now is the platform. He's the next President. Like with every politician, 99% of what he says and promises on his way to getting elected won't be followed after he is sworn in. The dude was a Democrat 3 years ago. He's not a bible thumper. He's not a Bible thumper, but he doesn't operate by personal principle either. He operates by what sells. When he's surrounded by Democrats, he likes Democrat policies and Republicans are a disaster. Now that he's engrained with Republicans, he likes Republican policies and Democrats are a disaster. He's going to sell anti-Obergefell judges.
  2. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 06:50 PM) This doesn't help anything. That's not the real account for Jill Biden.
  3. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 06:44 PM) Ah yes, unity and partnership and compromise and all that. The great liberal talking point until someone else wins that doesn't think like me. I think it more concerns people that don't think at all. He's probably not talking about people with different political views (if he wanted to avoid them, he wouldn't be here), but the people whose entire presence on your Facebook feed has become limited to posts about Hillary worshiping Satan and why liberals are traitors.
  4. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 06:30 PM) Restriction =/= ban which was my original point. Yes, some people no doubt voted because Clinton is obviously pro-SSM/choice and Trump may appoint SC's that are not. I think we can deduce from the exit polls that the vast majority did not and those issues were secondary (at best). Why would he pause and thank the audience if he didn't, on some level, take a position that was far left of the stereotypical conservative? That makes no sense. - But adding enough restrictions effectively becomes a ban. That's the whole idea. - I'd agree it wasn't the primary issue. My original point was that these issues are still very significant, and the Religious Right still very powerful. - Speaking about gay people in any light that isn't horribly negative IS far left of the stereotypical conservative. I don't think Donald Trump personally has a major issue with gay people, but he also doesn't care enough to stop the anti-gay GOP platform from moving forward.
  5. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 05:17 PM) Is Omarrossa gonna hold a Cabinet position? It just keeps becoming more and more surreal The least Trump can do is make things interesting. How about a reality tv show a la The Apprentice called The Cabinet where everyone has to vie for positions? I'd watch it. If he's going to pick a bunch of clowns like Guiliani, Christie, and Carson, I might as well get some entertainment out of it.
  6. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 05:02 PM) Doing that would in effect be a reversal of Roe v. Wade. Again, I don't think that's going to happen. Even the conservative justices have recognized the right in their decisions in favor of limited restrictions. 3 of them were okay with the Texas TRAP law. That was a major restriction. And remember, Donald Trump doesn't know squat about the Constitution or the SCOTUS. His pick is going to be based on whatever sells best to the Republican base, and that's probably going to be someone who fully opposes Roe v Wade. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 05:02 PM) Disagree. I still think he gets turnout due to the anti-hillary, pro-trump views on trade/jobs. I don't think you'd deny that there are a lot of single-issue ("double-issue"?) voters with abortion and gays. These people were cool with free trade up until now. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 05:02 PM) Eh, I think that was what he meant. Even still, you have the President elect from the Republican side pointing it out in a national speech and you have the RNC audience, which includes a lot of those religious fanatics, applauding it. Not a chance in hell that's what he meant. At its core, it was a "I'll protect people from terrorists" statement, not a pro-gay-rights statement.
  7. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 05:47 PM) This was one of many problems the entire campaign. The extreme right and the Donald would simply spout lies and the deplorables would eat it up. If you ever feel like being sad, go to the Facebook page of any local news station and read the comments. It's basically people pasting memes back and forth, largely filled with conspiracy theories and weird nonsense they found on the internet. Most insane one I saw yesterday was a wikileak email where a woman was inviting various Dems to a pool party and said her nieces and nephew would be there. This was interpreted as a child prostitution ring. It's nice that most people here on Soxtalk, regardless of political persuasion, are reasonable.
  8. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 05:36 PM) http://regated.com/2016/10/hillary-clinton-gay-marriage/ One of her many lies. http://www.snopes.com/hillary-clinton-secr...poses-equality/
  9. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 04:34 PM) To be fair, neither is Hillary. ? Maintaining marriage equality was one of the things she repeated said was important in a SCOTUS justice, along with upholding Roe v Wade and getting rid of Citizens United.
  10. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 04:08 PM) 1) So there would still be 10 clinics where abortions could be performed legally. Which is different from zero if Roe v. Wade is overturned. It's not happening without an extreme reversal from numerous SC opinions. Yes, there's be 10. Until they passed another TRAP law that reduced it to 5. Then 0. If the first TRAP law passed the courts, why wouldn't they keep going? Again, 3 (would have been 4 if Scalia were alive at the time) were okay with these laws despite their only purpose being to move towards ending abortion. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 04:08 PM) 2) I guess I don't see the importance here then. Any republican candidate, even one who is basically a moderate (like Trump, 3 years ago a Democrat!), would get those votes. He didn't stress those stances at all If Trump had said he was pro-choice or gave a list of judges that weren't anti-SSM/anti-abortion, he would not have picked up those voters. Many people have been citing SCOTUS picks as the reason for picking Trump. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 04:08 PM) 3) No, his quote was i will do everything to protect LGBT rights and the audience applauded and then he pointed out that they applauded. http://www.thewrap.com/donald-trump-embrac...nal-convention/ He said he would protect "LGBTQ citizens", not "LGBTQ rights", and the quote was in the context of the Pulse night club shooting.
  11. QUOTE (SouthSidePride05 @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 04:50 PM) Anyone can become president in this country.. except gays. That will never happen. In 2008, Obama had real political principles and policies. But he thrived because he was able to move a lot of people emotionally with "Hope and Change". In 2016, Trump had no real political principles, and barely cared about policy at all. But he was an absolute beast at grabbing hold of people emotionally and stoking their passions (for better and worse). Charisma/salesmanship is the name of the game now. I think policy nerds are gonna be fighting for VP slots.
  12. QUOTE (brett05 @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 03:11 PM) Watching some take comments way out of context. And where have you been? What's the context for claiming Barack Obama is a foreign Muslim illegally holding office? What's the context for tweeting fake crime statistics about black people? What's the context for portraying most illegal immigrants as criminals or rapists (but some are okay people) Or indicating that a judge can't fairly judge his case because of his Mexican heritage? What's the context for the constant racial dog-whistles? What's the context for making up lies about American Muslims engaging in huge celebrations for 9/11? What's the context for all of Trump's crude comments objectifying and demeaning women? I mean, really. How much does it take?
  13. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 03:51 PM) 1) Making abortions more difficult and overturning Roe v. Wade are two very different things. 2) One of the most beloved Democrats of the last half century is a serial adulterer. 3) He took a pause at his RNC speech to applaud the audience for applauding about homosexual rights. That's how far the "right" has come on the issue of gay marriage. 1) It really isn't that different. The Texas law caused 30/40 of the clinics in the state to close. A similar Alabama law almost knocked down the total number of clinics down to 3. And these were just the "testing the waters" laws. Once they know they can get some restrictions through, they'll pass more until every clinic is regulated to the point where it's impossible to open. 2) Right, but that doesn't relate to what I said. The importance of getting the Religious Right hasn't ended just because Trump personally isn't a member. It's extremely easy to draw that YUGE block of people on gays and abortion alone. 3) Dude, they applauded for gay people not being murdered by terrorists. That's a far cry from supporting gay marriage, opposing horrific "conversion therapy", and opposing anti-gay discrimination.
  14. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 02:28 PM) Right. But I think it's safe to say R v. W isn't going to be reopened. I mean don't you think the right to abortion is here to stay? It was just partially reopened this year when the SCOTUS examined the Texas TRAP law. That law was completely nonsensical and had no purpose other than to curb abortion rights and 3/8 justices were still okay with it. Scalia's replacement would be a fourth. Then you're just expecting that none of Kennedy/RGB/Breyer resign or die in the next 4 years. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 02:28 PM) I think one of the main things to take out of this election is that the Republican Party finally shed the baggage of having to protect the highly religious right. Sure they can still vote GOP for economic policy or whatever but a vote for a republican is no longer going to be a vote against all gays and abortion. Donald Trump, serial adulterer, gambling tycoon, and man who probably isn't even a Christian absolutely rocked the Evangelical vote simply by appealing to their desire for anti-gay, anti-abortion SCOTUS picks. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 02:28 PM) If you look at it that way, this is a good day for American politics moving forward. The days of the crazy ass policy of the left is certainly less crazy than the crazy stone-aged ideology of the right are ending. It's getting closer to just being about economic policy which is great. Those days aren't ending; that ideology just took control of all 3 branches!
  15. QUOTE (brett05 @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 03:25 PM) He's done no such thing. Where have you been the past year and a half?
  16. QUOTE (brett05 @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 03:11 PM) We all will. We survived the last 8 years we will survive the next 4 What were people scared about the last 8 years? Obama's secret Muslim allegiance? Christianity being criminalized? Everyone's guns being taken away? The fears about Obama were things people made up. The fears about Trump are his actual campaign promises.
  17. QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 02:13 PM) ive gotten the feeling in the past that Trump is ok with gay marriage so I would kind of be shocked if that was over turned. The type of SCOTUS justice he's been hyping up is NOT okay with gay marriage.
  18. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 12:39 PM) That, and nothing will be done about global warming in the next four years. EPA is going to be gutted.
  19. On a positive note, we've definitely Drained the Swamp by kicking out the GOP house and GOP senate and replacing them with a GOP house and and GOP senate. And now they can pass what they want with no veto threat.
  20. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 8, 2016 -> 10:30 PM) You've been following this stuff more than me, but why does more turnout = better for Hillary? I get that the Latino vote is coming out big this election, but you or someone else posted numbers of increased latino voters from some state the other day and it also showed an increase in white voters too (the number of which doubled all minority increases combined). Generally speaking, Republicans have more a more reliable voting base than Democrats due to strong demographics like senior citizens and Evangelicals (and not apathetic young people). If turnout is low, it means Republicans came out and Democrats didn't. If turnout is high, it means Republicans came out and Democrats did too.
  21. QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Nov 8, 2016 -> 08:21 PM) That usually means the touch screen isn't calibrated correctly Possibly, or people being idiots, or people lying. Here's the latest hotness in rigged voting machines that won't let you vote for Trump: http://www.infowars.com/video-machine-refu...n-pennsylvania/ Only problem is that the guy seems to be deliberately avoiding the actual selection button and instead keeps pressing Trump's name, like that's going to do anything. RIGGED
  22. QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Nov 8, 2016 -> 08:02 PM) Coulter Says Trump Wins Easily If Only People with 4 American-Born Grandparents Vote This is funny because neither Trump nor his kids meet this criteria, and almost all black Americans do, and probably a lot more Mexicans than she thinks. And even only counting white people, it would knock out way more Silent Gens and Baby Boomers (likely R voters) than Gen X and Millenials (likely D voters).
  23. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 8, 2016 -> 08:27 PM) And if Clinton did the same s*** none of you would have a second thought about it. Can we do away with *hypothetical* hypocrisy as an argument? If someone has in the past has defended something similar to what they're currently criticizing, by all means, call them out on it. But this "I bet you would too..." stuff is just pointless.
  24. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 05:27 PM) Lynching? Why do you liberals always play the race card? This gentleman wants to build journalists a rope swing so they can have fun.
  25. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 04:07 PM) Hillary will take office with about a 20% approval rating after getting about 60% of the popular vote....think about that. 60% of the PV? I'd be surprised if she hits 50.
