Reed is learning. He's pretty fearless. And I think the experience he's getting under pressure will page huge dividends later in the season.

Note to Jake: giving up a run an inning isn't going to cut it.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 08:59 PM) Hahahahaha. Someone in the Sox dugout "Come on! Let's hit this piece of s***!!!" AJ as he entered the dugout. lol

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 03:45 PM) This is all true. However, I'm still skeptical if this is the actual problem. The did an ultrasound after the MRI. As I stated in a different thread, these are usually for muscle injuries not tendon. I think this case is one that no one really knows what's going on so they rested and rehabbed it to see if it would help. If it does, he'll pitch again. If it doesn't they'll do surgery. Most of the time, this type of ambiguous pain comes from overall shoulder instability. In a pitcher typically the "looseness" focuses in the anterior part of the shoulder and begins to degenerate tissue in this area. This could explain the original Subscapularis findings. The grade 1 tears show as fluid in the area as it's only a minor tear. General degeneration will show up like this as well. My guess is that if can't continue to throw they will do surgery to tighten up the joint capsule and "clean up" anything else they find. The only real danger of this is if they tighten up the capsule too much it isn't flexible enough. If they don't tighten it up enough, the joint is still too loose. It can be tricky.Either way if they do surgery anytime before Oct. he should be ready to go in spring Training. PTATC with the diagnosis this afternoon... and Kenny makes the call less than two hours later. The power of Soxtalk. lol

Shirek is on a nice little roll for Charlotte. In 4 starts since the all star break, he has 20 K's and 1 BB (23 innings). Has a 5:1 K/BB on the season. 3.5:1 vs lefties. 7.5:1 vs righties.

I spent a few minutes looking on medical sites for treatment of this type of injury. Seems physical therapy is the first option. Surgery is not normally recommended for Grade 1 unless physical therapy doesn't provide results. Time period for therapy was described as normally 6-8 weeks. If he requires arthroscopic surgery, it says the normal recovery time would be 3-6 months.

Danks has a Grade-1 strain of the subscapularis muscle... diagnosed in mid-June. Not initially thought to require surgery. http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/artic...ws&c_id=cws Referred to as a tear in this note from the Tribune... http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-06...tter-mdgonzales

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 10:59 AM) Its very similar to the Buehrle situation for us. Our org basically made zero offer and he left for an actual large payday. Thome did the same and they booed him relentlessly. I would NEVER boo Mark Buehrle. Well... not really comparable. The Tribe said they were interested in re-signing Thome. (Not sure how serious... But that is part of the equation) Thome proclaimed during the negotiation process that it wasn't about the money... That he loved playing in Cleveland and that "they'd have to tear the jersey off my back" to get him to leave. Then he left because Philly offered him one year more guaranteed on his contract. So... it was about the money. And fans saw him as a liar and hypocrit. He would have been better off if he never opened his mouth.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 10:33 AM) I dont get the respect for Indians fans, I've found them to be terrible and knowledge-less. Booing Jim Thome is exhibit A. The Thome thing would make a good subject for a sociology doctoral thesis. Have engaged in many Tribe fans on this topic. It's a love/hate thing. Too many parts to make a simple analysis. The easiest way to describe it is abandonment by family member who tells you they love you and will never leave you... and then takes off in the middle of the night. The bitterness the Tribe fans show tells you how attached they were to him. They felt he betrayed them. Not necessarily rational, but emotional issues seldom are.

QUOTE (thedoctor @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 09:17 AM) if i was an indians fan i'd be pretty pissed off. They are. Particularly while watching the Sox success. In general, they have very knowledgeable fans... above average knowledge of Sabr stats, etc. And they are irritated as hell watching Antonini/Shapiro get pantsed by KW.

I've been keeping an eye on Trayce and it seems to me that he's starting to put it together.

Regarding Floyd... How often does a team in a pennant race trade away an experienced starting pitcher? (add in that he has the second most starts... and wins... on the pitching staff) Not sure I can think of any examples of it happening. There will be opportunity to move him in the offseason. He's not going anywhere until then.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 11:03 PM) His phone is out of minutes? What? A GM doesn't have unlimited voice? Kenny-speak for "don't call me tonight."

I don't think the velocity drop is due to a physical problem. I think it's intentional to help him last longer into the season.

The Cubs ought to package Bryan LaHair into a Dempster deal. Try to leverage any remaining value he has into getting a better pitching prospect.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 12:27 PM) At no time was Bellamy ever thought of as a Top 10 pick. True. But he was thought to be a relatively advanced specialist who could move through the organization quickly. Problem is he's been plagued by control issues. And a reliever with control issues.... not going to hit too many top prospect lists. Seems like he has a mental block about pitching in Birmingham. I'd try moving him up to Charlotte. No reason to move him back to high-A... he's dominated twice there... but can't find the plate in Birmingham.

If Philadelphia's pitching stays healthy... I could picture them making a run before the season ends. Would be fascinating to see happen... Worst to first.

I keep seeing people saying Floyd is the trade chip, but I can't help thinking its Quintana. Q has been great for us this year, but if you were the Brewers which would make more sense to you. A guy getting paid $9m with one year left before free agency... Or a 23 year old (lefty) at league minimum they could control for the next 5 years. And for us... Q is in the same dangerous territory that Sale is reaching innings wise. One of the main reasons for us to get another starter is to cover innings Sale and Q may not be able to pitch. What good would it do us down the stretch if we give up a 200+ inning guy like Floyd and then still be forced to dip into the minors to get coverage for Sale/Q when they max out? My guess... Quintana and Beckham are being offered along with one or more minor leaguers. Beckham fills the Brewers hole at SS. Q gives them a young starter who has shown (this year at least) that he can get major league hitters out... which in many ways trumps what other teams may offer in an unproven pitching prospect.
-
Anybody else think that Kenny might opt to 'sell high' on Quintana?

Great article.

Since the all star break, our pitching staff has given up the most hits of any staff in the AL. This has to change.

Don't know why... but I have a feeling we're going to win this game. -
Paulie was 5-12 with 3BBs and only 1K in the Boston series.
