  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 16, 2009 -> 10:57 AM) I just took a look at the Bristol and GF rosters online, and they are still stale, just shows the guys from last year that didn't already move to other teams or organizations. Anyone recall when those clubs post their rosters? Obviously they won't have the draft picks on there right away until after they sign, but certainly some guys will move form one to the other, and they start play in just a week. The rookie short-season leagues begin on June 23rd. Don't be surprised if the updated rosters aren't posted before then. It's pretty common that they go up at the last minute.
  2. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jun 16, 2009 -> 12:01 PM) Go to the game and have fun. If that means buying a beer or two, go ahead and do it ^^^^^^ That. PD, do you really think you can drink enough beer to make an impact on the Cubs ability to sign free agents? If so, I'm impressed.
  3. QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Jun 15, 2009 -> 10:04 PM) Birmingham v. Mississippi Viciedo 3-4 with a HR and 3 RBI 1BB Other notes from the game... a 10-0 Barons win. Very nice outing for McCulloch. 7 innings; 0 runs on 7 hits; 3 K's and 0 BB's. Flowers 2-4, Cook 2-4, and Gartrell 3-4. Viciedo, Cook, and Gartrell with 3 RBI's each. ---------------------------------------------------- A few other Baron's notes... Birmingham has 4 players in the top 10 in the league in OPS: Flowers, Cook, Retherford, and Gartrell. Retherford (at .309) is 9th in the league in batting average... the only Baron in the top 10. Tyler Flowers (at .426) is 2nd in the league in OBP. David Cook (at .526) is 2nd in the league in slugging... Retherford (at .517) is 4th in the league. Poreda, Omogrosso, and Ely are 3rd, 4th, and 5th in the league (respectively) in strikeouts. Poreda was also 3rd in the league in ERA (2.38) when called up.
  4. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 12, 2009 -> 10:38 PM) How close is B-ham to clinching now? Magic number is 4, I think. But for all practical purposes, they've got the first half title wrapped up. They're 7 games ahead of the second place team.
  5. Charlotte loses 3-2 in extras to Lehigh Valley Torres with another strong start for the Knights. Season ERA is now 2.55. Too bad the team can't hit. Lillibridge now batting .192 for Charlotte. Birmingham a 6-2 winner at Mississippi Another good outing by Harrell. (6 innings, 2 earned runs on 7 hits, 3 K's, 2 BB's). Excellent relief pitching by Nunez and Hernandez. 11 hits including 5 doubles by the Barons... 2 by Flowers. W-S loses 3-2 at home to Wilmington Rasner with another nice start. The team just couldn't score enough runs to back him up. Mollenhauer with 2 hits... a double and a triple. Kanny a 6-4 winner over Greensboro in 10 innings. Seth Loman auditioning for the big league team by hitting 3 solo home runs. He's been tearing up the South Atlantic League. Probably time to move him back up to Winston-Salem.
  6. Waaaaay too early to be voting for disappointments among the players listed in the poll. Come on people. This is early June. It's not at all unusual for minor league players to start out slow after they've been moved up a level. So season average stats for minor league players mean precisely squat at this time of year. Also... Gilmore was just named SAL offensive player of the week and has been on fire recently. Shelby has historically been a slow starter who comes on late... and he's hitting .375 with a .419 OBP over the last 14 days. And both Gilmore and Escobar are young for their league... in low A-ball. How is it logical to classify talented 20-year olds in low A-ball (the two youngest guys on their team) as disappointments??
  7. If Hudson keep pitching like he did tonight, he's going to find himself in Birmingham by the end of the year. Player IP H R ER BB SO Hudson 7.0 5 2 2 1 8
  8. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:04 PM) Should we make a new thread for tomorrow? It'll make day two easier to follow, IMO. Yes
  9. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 09:39 PM) I would look at the stuff, rather than the numbers. Looks at the numbers Poreda, Hudson, and Carter had when we drafted them. I'm really critical of this organization at times, but we've done a great job of developing pitchers with very good stuff but were projects... well, at least in the past 2 years. Also, he'll likely sign for below slot money, so the White Sox love that. ^^^^^^^^^^^^ I completely agree. And add Nathan Jones to that list.
  10. Scranton @ Charlotte Knights just about to lose in the 10th it looks like Montgomery @ Birmingham McCulloch getting pounded Winston-Salem @ Potomac JLowe pitching Kannapolis @ Hickory Kanny loses 7-2
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) He dumped Iguchi to save a bit of salary mid-season, and IIRC there was at least one other move I can't recall. July 27th... right before the trade deadline
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:13 AM) 3.5 out in July though... July 31st is 52 days from now. Big difference in waving a white flag when the season is 2/3 over than when it's 1/3 over.
  13. Teams don't go into fire-sale mode when they're 4.5 games out in June. But I don't want to take the fun out of the thread, so I'll just shut up.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:47 AM) Anyone else hear that KW stormed out (as in being extremely pissed off) of the Sox clubhouse yesterday, and it was after a meeting with Ozzie? That's what Comcast supposedly reported. Things are definitely in motion. What was Ozzie's quote to the media yesterday? "Good teams win games. Horse**** teams have meetings. Well, we're to the point where we're going to have a lot of meetings."
  15. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 07:47 AM) Im going to say it now: If Beckham plays today, he gets his first hit. And I firmly believe once that first hit is under his belt, he is going to take off. ^^^^ Seemed like last night he had his timing down on his swing. I think today we see two hits out of him.
  16. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 09:37 AM) Because? Arizona isn't exactly setting the world on fire at the moment. They're last in the AL West and with the Dodgers playing well they don't have much of a chance to contend this season. Josh Byrnes could decide to reload, and they've got quite a few early picks in this season's draft IIRC. Not saying it's going to happen, but you just can't rule it out and say it's definitely not. I think the odds are extremely small... emphasis on extremely. Lloyd Christmas type small.
  17. QUOTE (Sox1422 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 07:40 AM) Viciedo is hitting .286 now and is on fire. Danks is the hottest hitter in the organization. It's not like Danks is a spring chicken. Dude turns 23 in August. Two points... 1. It's only AA. Don't forget that Jerry Owens led that league in hitting one year. (And Fields raked in AAA). So Danks and Viciedo are looking promising but doing well in AA doesn't mean they should be brought up. 2. Danks is no spring chicken?? Because he turns 23 in August??? His age is not a problem and shouldn't be an issue. We need to develop this kid properly because he could be our CF for the next 10 years. Don't screw him up by bringing him up before he's ready.
  18. The bad news is that Omogrosso is doing his best to gag away the lead he's been handed.
  19. Barons now up 8-2 after 3 innings. David Cook 2-2 with a double, a homerun, and 4 RBIs.
  20. QUOTE (TitoMB345 @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 08:00 PM) Gordon has to get a hit eventually.. right? Bonderman is probably the right guy for him to get it against. Beckham got two hits off him in AAA just before both were called up.
  21. Scranton @ Charlotte Cassell pitching Knights up 7-2 in the 6th Montgomery @ Birmingham Omogrosso pitching Barons put up a 5-spot in the bottom of the first Winston-Salem & Kanny have the night off.
  22. Charlotte lost 5-0. The only positive note from this game is that Kroeger went 2-3, both doubles. Barons lost 3-0 in 10 innings. Ely pitched 6 innings of shutout ball but didn't get a decision obviously. Winston-Salem won 4-3 in 11 innings. Greg Paiml with a walk-off single, driving in Salvadore Sanchez who led off with a double. Kanny won game one 5-4 with a 3-run rally in the bottom of the final inning. Jon Gilmore with a sac-fly for the game winner. Kanny won game two 3-2 in another walkoff! Justin Greene drives in the winning run with a squeeze bunt. Both Kanny wins involved walk-offs?? Great day to be at the ballpark.
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 7, 2009 -> 04:53 PM) Fire away. I knew you were going to get a sneak a plug for Kroeger in there somewhere.
  24. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 02:31 PM) You sit there and say everyone was making all these bad decisions before, in a whole other era, but then everything changed for the better once Bill James came around. This is exactly the problem with you people: you believe one thing and you won't admit that it's just your own view. It's some great formula that can't be f***ed with. You make your assertion, knowing it cannot be proven, and you play it off as fact. Tell me, did Bill James bring us Carlos Quentin or Gavin Floyd? Or was that a lot more scouting, with a look at minor league stats as a form of reassurance? What were these good numbers that brought us these players here recently but wouldn't have brought them in the past? And please, what is a "good number" versus a "bad number?" Why am I not able to appropriately judge a pitcher simply off of his stuff, his peripheral stats, park/playing conditions, and strength of opposition? Why do I need pythagorean wins and win shares and so on? And why are all these numbers revolutionary? If scouting has improved because stats have improved, then I believe it is because of better technology, more man power, greater funding, and easier access to information. I don't believe it has anything to do with adding a bunch of numbers together. Yikes. Stop. The problem is that you don't know what you don't know. There are lots of good books that cover the topics of how the business of baseball and baseball measurements have changed over the last 25 years. Start there.
  25. VA Fan... you obviously don't like Getz. We get it. Just don't expect people to buy into statistical arguments based on 49 games of a guy's first year in the majors.
