  1. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 05:21 PM) ...and now, so is Vlad... 1 year @ 8 mill. Somehow the Orioles look like a legitimate team now.. Too bad they're in the AL East
  2. Jim Edmonds to the Cardinals on a minor league deal, likely to earn a bench spot on the big club.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 12:16 PM) Did Ozzie ever wear that jersey? I thought by the time he started they moved on to the script White Sox jersey? Ozzie made his playing debut in 1985, the script White Sox with the script "C" hat made it's debut in 1987, he wore that jersey for 2 seasons.
  4. QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 11:47 AM) The Reggie Jackson and Randy Johnson are the best. As for the Sox shirt; the Yahoo blog link lists all the players, and even asked Nike directly, just to be sure on some of the tougher ones. Nike came back and said it was "Wade Boggs", lol. After doing a search, they come to believe it is Ozzie. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_leagu...?urn=mlb-316458 I guess Ozzie does make the most sense. I'd love a current logo shirt with the stache of Jose Valentin though.
  5. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 09:55 AM) If by "iconic" you mean s***ty, it could be Jerry Don Gleaton or even The Dibber. My guess is Lamarr Hoyt, minus the beard. Edit: oops, interpreted your comment wrong.
  6. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 09:38 AM) Hopefully they remember the sacrifice and later offer an extra day off to "help offset the increased profits and revenue gains" during a busy time. I doubt it. And unless they change the structure of my bonus, I'll have to make the same amount of revenue in one fewer day this period. It's actually a blessing in disguise though, since my paid time off is maxed out and there's no extra off days in sight for me, this will atleast allow me to earn another day for the future over the next couple of weeks.
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 09:35 AM) Weird. During that jersey period, who from the Sox ended up in Cooperstown? I can think of Fisk and Seaver. Neither of them had a stache like that. I think "Cooperstown" is loosely used whenever Nike does anything baseball related using an old logo, but most of the players they used in this line are Cooperstown caliber or iconic.. I can't think of an iconic Sox player from that era who had that kind of stache. It didn't stop me from ordering a shirt though..
  8. My store stayed closed on Wednesday but I didn't get the OK to stay closed until about 11:00am. Before that, I was obligated to keep in touch with my employees to see if anyone could access the store to open. I was then asked to either take on an extra day later this week (not much of the week to do so) or use a day of paid vacation to "help offset the labor costs and revenue losses." I could have put up a stink, but I just filled out the Paid Time Off form and went about my day.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 08:57 AM) There's more to it than luck. There's the training staff. There's also the type of guys we sign. There's also the type of contracts that the team gives out; they're not giving out 8 year deals to guys or $25 million contracts to 37 year olds. I didn't take any credit away from the training staff or the organization, I actually gave them credit in the post you quoted. The training staff prevents and heals better than anyone in the business and the organization is very smart and values durability, but there's some amount to luck to it too. Justin Morneau taking a knee to the head and getting a concussion is a freak catastrophic injury that can't be prepared for or prevented by a training staff. The White Sox have been lucky to not have anything like that happen to any core players until Peavy had to go and have a muscle detach from his body. Some will say Peavy was just an injury waiting to happen, but the severity of the injury couldn't be prepared for. Regardless, it's an awesome statistic that has allowed The White Sox to save a ton of money over the last decade while remaining largely competitive, at least partially allowing for this surge in payroll that we're seeing this year. The article states that the second best team at staying healthy is the Milwaukee Brewers, who are doing some spending this off season to try to capitalize on what will probably be Prince Fielder's last season in Milwaukee. It's an interesting parallel.
  10. This is a very cool White Sox shirt, but I can't figure out who it is... Anybody have any idea? My first guess would be Harold Baines, but I don't remember him ever having just a mustache. Who else could it be from that era? The rest of the line is pretty cool and more defined with guys like Randy Johnson, Reggie Jackson, Mattingly, Munson, and Kirby Puckett, : NIKE
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 08:03 AM) Assuming it counts last year...that really does tell you how healthy the Sox have been otherwise. In the way of catastrophic injuries, the White Sox have been incredibly lucky. The training staff is incredible at both keeping players healthy and getting them back to health after an injury.
  12. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 07:54 AM) The trade for Jake Peavy may drop us from the top spot super quick. I considered noting that, though I figured it was obvious and I decided to keep it a positive post.
  13. SI article, The White Sox have spent less money on DL players than any other team over that past 9 years. Good piece. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writ...eball-injuries/
  14. Ron Mahay just signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers
  15. Did Orlando Cabrera run out of teams that'll deal with his attitude?
  16. QUOTE (thedoctor @ Jan 31, 2011 -> 08:02 PM) even though they picked up his 2.75 option for this year is it assured that the deal starts in 2012? could they pick up the option, then tear it up once they re-negotiated? if he's playing for 2.75 this year and then the deal picks up next year that makes a pretty damn good deal even better. i'm not terribly familiar with how the contracts work (obvi). I'm under the impression that this is an extension to be tacked on after his current contract, which is up after this year. It would be bad business for the white sox to have someone under contract for cheap and offer him more money when they don't have to yet. But it's good business to lock him up beyond this year at a fixed rate before he gets to arbitration or free agency. It's a great deal.
  17. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 31, 2011 -> 06:45 PM) Does it state how much he will make each year? I hope it's not backloaded. I haven't seen anything about how it's divided yet, but multiple sources are reporting the total number and the extension value. I don't know if The White Sox can afford another backloaded contract.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 31, 2011 -> 06:13 PM) If the club option year is 2016, then Alexei is now under team control for 6 seasons counting the option. Therefore, he's still under contract for this year, this deal then buys out his 2 remaining arb eligible years, and buys out 2 FA years, along with an option to buy out a 3rd FA year. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpag...896&id=5292 Rotoworld states that Alexei will still play under his $2.75 million contract for 2011, and the extension is for the 2012-2015 seasons with the $10 million option for the 2016 season.
  19. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 31, 2011 -> 06:01 PM) I was just going to post this. That's big money. Big money and big value if Alexei keeps progressing.
  20. http://twitter.com/#!/jorgeebro/status/32217491363074048 Please edit byline: club option for 2016, not 2015
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 02:17 PM) Scraped his knuckles on the ground. Damaso Marte Got the W in game 3 of the 2005 World Series and Mark Buehrle got the save. Strange role reversal. Speaking of Game 3.... Geoff Blum
  22. The Deacon! Underrated, could have been more loved with more playing time. I always enjoyed watching him bat. Craig Grebeck
  23. QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 01:44 PM) Nobody beats the Widge. Olmedo Saenz Currently the hitting coach for the White Sox Rookie Affiliate, the Great Falls Voyagers. Jack McDowell
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 28, 2011 -> 08:47 AM) The real problem with signing a Garcia is...what do you do with him if all of your other 5 starters are healthy. If you can get him on a deal where you can option him to the minors, that's perfect, but he ought to be able to find better than that just by going to NL clubs. The other place to put him is the bullpen...but I don't think that works that great either. I noted earlier how I don't think he's a good bullpen fit with his health issues and with his history of needing a long time to warm up. Beyond that though, there are only 2 guys in the bullpen who can effectively be sent down to the minors, Sale and Infante, and frankly, I expect that both of them would outpitch Freddy as bullpen guys this year. There's a pretty stable faction of posters around here who think the White Sox should be looking to trade John Danks for a king's ransom as the trade deadline approaches since he hasn't signed an extension yet. If everyone's health is in-line, players are performing up to or beyond expectations/potential, and the deal is right, I don't think it'd be out of the question to consider it an option to hold onto Freddy and trade Danks and replenish the system a little bit.
  25. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 26, 2011 -> 04:45 PM) It really doesn't. But if you say so. I'll make sure to keep tabs on all Yankee minor league pitching transactions from now on so I can immediately start a thread when a signing occurs. Have you noticed the habit around here of keeping tabs on former White Sox players? It seems especially appropriate to keep an eye on those who have been the butts of many, MANY jokes or discussions, because that type of banter is fun and light hearted. This thread should be strictly limited to jokes about Bartolo Colon's weight or his improbable disappearing act. Maybe we need to re-open the more general baseball talk forum (I forget what it was called) and split other teams deals out to that side of the board, so as not to clutter things up as spring training approaches.
