DH Game 1: Buehrle (9-8, 4.15 ERA) v Porcello (4-9, 5.50 ERA)

Juan looked so confused on his way around the bases! -
They're probably hoping Mark will give them more innings than Torres, leaving the pen fresh for game 2 when they're more likely to be used.

This sounds about as legitimate as the Padres sending Mat Latos to the DL right after the all-star break after he "strained his oblique holding in a sneeze," right after they announced they planned on substantially pushing back his next start.. Fishy DL business, but I'm ok with it if it helps the Sox win or keep some guys in the show.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 09:48 AM) To be fair, he isn't "starting" the speculation. This has been going on for a while now. I guess I haven't seen much public speculation about it outside of this board.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 09:35 AM) And what has Threets done to be sent back down? He's looked pretty solid so far. Threets has been pretty good, but I can't really recall any high-leverage situations he's been in.

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere. Good, quick article from Time Magazine about the shift in power from hitters to pitchers: http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,...07984-2,00.html

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 08:41 AM) Carlos Santana was carted off last night after an impact at home. I watched this live last night and my girlfriend and I both had the type of reaction that most have at brutal scenes of a horror movie. It looked extremely painful. Initial reports are that it's not as bad as it looks, which is good because looked like his knee bent backwards, but I'd imagine Santana will atleast see the 15 day DL, which is a shame because he's a hell of a ball player (and my fantasy baseball catcher).

I'm extremely excited for Wednesday night. The White Sox pummeled him twice at the end of last season, so I can understand why there's doubters, but I think he's going to be an anchor to the end of this staff. A little off topic-- I've always wondered: do team's hitting and pitching coaches often help recognize flaws in opposing hitters or pitchers so as to make them easier to exploit or do they generally focus only on their own guys?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:20 PM) I don't think people realize how talented Jackson is. He was once considered a top 5 prospect in all of baseball, made his major league debut when he was 19 and seems fully recovered from surgery. If they have found a flaw that's easily correctible, he's going to be a pretty popular guy. Jackson's ceiling is as high as any young right-hander in the game. He's got mad potential and some solid experience to build off of. -

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:42 PM) Always nice when someone uses win loss record for a pitcher to try and make a point. If he knows how to pitch well in a pennant race then why was he so god damn awful in the 2nd half of last season? He went 7-4 in 17 appearances between the beginning of July and October. His last two outings were vs. the White Sox, who obviously had his number for one reason or another. Take out those two starts against the team he now pitches for and he was as consistent as the rest of his season. In those 17 appearances, he only went less than 5 innings once, less than 6 innings only 4 times. He's a proven innings eater. He keeps his teams in the ball game long enough to get to the bullpen, and with a bullpen like the Sox, that's just fine for a 5th starter. His stats vs. the White Sox throughout his career are substantially worse than almost every other team in baseball. If you're talking about how "damn awful" he was against the Sox at the end of last season, then I'd say that's a pretty small sample size. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:10 PM) We'll see how you feel if we have to trade Danks due to money issues or cannot re-sign Konerko. Not re-signing Konerko wouldn't phase me. I like Danks because he's an ace without the opposition having the mindset of playing against an ace, but he's going to be very expensive, regardless of what the White Sox are paying other players. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:11 PM) For $8 million I really, really hope you are right. It's not my payroll. I like him as a player. With that said, I still like him at 8 mil this year and next more than I like Dunn coming around for a few months and leaving town for 20 mil/yr. QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:13 PM) No Jake Peavy = need for starting pitching. How is this so hard to comprehend? If the White Sox flipped over Jackson for Dunn, who was going to pitch in that slot of the rotation? Torres? Harrell? Pena? Konerko? Ozzie? QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:14 PM) Because Edwin Jackson sucks, costs a lot of money, and doesn't fill that need with the way he's pitching right now. 13-9 for Detroit last year when they went to game 163, 14-11 for Tampa bay in 2008 in the year they went to the world series. He knows how to pitch in a pennant race. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:21 PM) Jason Goff says Sox offered Jackson and Flowers, Rizzo said no. Rizzo wanted Jackson and Viciedo, and Kenny said no. This is the reason not re-signing Konerko won't bum me out. Viciedo obviously has a future with the organization, and it's probably at 1b. -

I still like Edwin Jackson as the #5 for this year and next more than I like Hudson. The Sox improved yesterday. -
And that's a White Sox winner !!

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 02:17 PM) That is awesome. That's what makes Sox fans so good and why something dumb like the wave should never happen. Our fans are like this story. Awesome. Not cliche and imbecilic like doing the wave. I was in section 162 (left-center field) last night. We had 3rd row bleacher seats from some season ticket holding friends of ours, but it's an area of the park that gets a lot of walk-up and/or last-minute ticket buyers. Around the 7th inning there was a feeble attempt at getting the wave going by a pretty large group a section over and they were met with very unfriendly words. Really fun game to be at, nice to see the "kids" of the team really win a game. -
Marcum gets the ball for Toronto on Friday. His control is some of the best in baseball, if the Blue Jays are smart, they'll get quite the ransom for him, or they'll sign him to a moderate extension in the off-season and keep him as a building block. The Twins have had decent experience with Tommy John surgery with Liriano, but I can't imagine they'd want two pitchers on the staff who have gone through that.
-
I've had tickets to this game for a while now, and I'm very much looking forward to it. But I just realized that they'll also be giving away Frank Thomas bobbleheads to the first 10,000 in attendance. If that's not worth getting there early, I don't know what is!

Does Kenny dare to consider making this trade?
TheChrisSamsa replied to hawksox13's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't think it's a matter of whether Kenny would give Teahen up to the Tigers, but what they'd be willing to give us back to strengthen us. This seems more like the type of move that'd happen in the offseason, not in the heat of a pennant race. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 19, 2010 -> 11:26 AM) The problem here is that the Royals are going to ask for Beckham for DeJesus. And that will be the end of the conversation. And there's no way we have the pieces for both of those guys, let alone one. Don't you think everyone in the league knows that Beckham isn't going anywhere, especially after it came out that Kenny wouldnt even move him for Cliff Lee?

I haven't heard or seen anything on this, but The Phillies might be one of few teams looking to solidify their closer role or atleast secure a back up plan. Lidge can't be depended on and when it wasn't Lidge, they were parading Jose Contreras out there. Putz or Jenks might be an appealing piece to them if they're made available.
