2012-2013 NCAA Basketball thread

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 11, 2013 -> 02:03 PM) And with you logic left. Where is the post questioning his recruiting talents? Clearly recruiting is what just got him a conference title, nobody can debate that at all. I think it's funny how much he is defended on this site when your own fans are skewering him on your board weekly for the exact same reasons we are being critical. I still have yet to see why you think he's one of the best player development coaches in the country. I think it's pretty safe to say recruiting gets every coach their titles. Nobody wins with crappy players. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 11, 2013 -> 01:42 PM) Nice retort. Show me an example. Is Zeller better this year than last year? Hulls? Wafford? How about Yogi from the non conference to the conference season? Crean's accomplishments have come from having a top 50 all time NBA player and 2 National Player of the Year nominees on the same team. If you're seriously suggesting it's because of his ability to coach em up, you have not been paying attention. I'm not at all suggesting he can't coach - he's been a coach at two high level D1 schools, obviously he can to some degree. I'm just saying he's not known for his coaching and hasn't really shown the ability to out coach some of the other really good coaches in the league to this point. He just won the Big Ten. The Indiana roster is his responsibility. I'm no Indiana fan, and Crean has always seemed a little odd to me, but coaches that win, whether they are known to be the greatest at designing out of bounds plays or not, are doing something right. Would Marquette rather have had Crean be known as a better Xs and Os guy and not land Wade? Getting Wade is part of his job. This year he won the Big Ten. All the other stuff is nitpicking. Would you rather have a guy considered a better game coach and come in 5th? As long as he's doing it cleanly, I don't see how Crean, if he keeps landing these recruits, is not worth his weight in gold. -
Usually they don't skip that early, unless there is a rainout or 2 and it extends their extra day off to 2 or 3 extra days off.

I'm sure Melton does the broadcast for free. Having a guy some will like better than Hawk or Farmer would just give people something else to complain about during the regular season. It all works out. Hawk and Farmer look better and it costs nothing.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 8, 2013 -> 12:01 PM) Odds are he had the medical clearance about a month ago. It's just coming out now. Just because it is medically sound doesn't mean he "feels" normal. Hopefully with it becoming public he gets a little more confident in the knee. I think he could sit out the next 2 years and the first time he plays he won't feel normal.IMO, the only way to get his knee to feel "normal" again is to play. Isn't playing real games an actual part of rehab for injuries like this?

DRose's surgeon from the Tribune: think there’s actually a lot of therapeutic benefit to starting with early minutes when it’s safe,” Cole said then. “You have to play to play. All these muscle patterns have to kick in. You can do that off the court informally. But there’s a lot of benefit to playing. Whether he has to go 40 minutes, that’s a whole different story. Just getting out there and playing when he’s able, that’s when his exponential growth is going to come. "The good news is he’s an incredible athlete. The other good news is he’s an unbelievably hard worker who wants this more than anything. We’re not going to rush him. The most important thing is all of us feel comfortable based on specific parameters that he’s ready to go as we advance him. If he’s not ready, we just delay. If he’s ready, we move him to the next stage.” Put your uniform on DRose.

QUOTE (SexiAlexei @ Mar 8, 2013 -> 11:00 AM) http://espn.go.com/chicago/nba/story/_/id/...oot-source-says So it's all in his head now. He is at no more of a risk of re injuring that ACL than anyone else blowing out theirs. He needs to get out there and play. Waiting until next year to return is just delaying the mental portion of the rehab process. I agree. I've been fine with him taking his time, but if the doctor says his knee is good to go, the best way for him to get anywhere close to his 110% requirement is to play.

What I don't understand is you want to get rid of Ramirez because you don't think he's worth his salary, then put a rookie at SS, and then spend money signing Grady Sizemore, who hasn't been good or healthy in 4 years, and I'm thinking the lone reason is he is left handed. How does that improve the team in 2013? Many of these trade ideas seem to be helping other teams instead of the Sox. Sanchez might be a good player one day, but making him the everyday SS now would probably have one pining for Ramirez in a month. Not to mention, Ramirez' trade value is probably at a low right now.

QUOTE (SpainSOXfan09 @ Mar 8, 2013 -> 10:36 AM) I poached this from a Yankees site but it is relevant because the Sox have shown interest in Headley. With Hahn being aggresive I never say never. Link: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball...ticle-1.1282771 Piece of article I thought was interesting - just a rumor. We’re talking Chase Headley here. Or maybe even Giancarlo Stanton. Even though it’s spring, when GMs supposedly make only garbage-dumping deals, the word is the Padres are starting to listen to offers for Headley, their 28-year-old All-Star third baseman who led the National League with 115 RBI last year but who is a free agent after 2014 and will undoubtedly command a contract they can’t come close to affording. The Padres will be able to afford him if they choose. TV money is increasing dramatically.

QUOTE (TitoMB @ Mar 7, 2013 -> 02:10 PM) 5 years, (up to) $60 million. Sounds like a steal if the kid produces like he did last year. Hopefully he stays healthy and lives up to this deal. Especially considering they get an extra $25 million a year starting next year from the national TV contract. The price of pitching is only going to go higher.

QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 7, 2013 -> 01:54 PM) I don't understand a lot of the frustration over Rose not returning yet. I know everyone pointed to Shumpert's return as a sign that Rose is taking too long to recover, but Shumpert's playing about 20 minutes a night so far and doesn't look strong at all (terrible shooting percentage). At this point, I'm beginning to think it's best just to let Rose sit out remainder of the year. I think its beyond a longshot the Bulls can win if he comes back this season, but unless he's at a greater risk than normal to get re-injured, I think the only way he's going to get ready to play is by playing in games. That and it can take any doubts out of his mind during the offseason. I read where Rose doesn't really like playing much during the summer. He would rather just work out and do some drills. If he doesn't play this season, and I still think he will play sometime during this roadtrip, he's still probably going to have some mental doubt in his head starting next season. Get that over with.

The Marlins are offering buy one get one free tickets for opening day. LMAO.

Trade possibility - Dewayne Wise to Yankees
Dick Allen replied to peteward's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southside_hitman @ Mar 5, 2013 -> 09:41 AM) I was not suggesting that any of our prospects has beaten out Wise for the 4th outfield spot. I was mentioning the possibility of a trade because having Wise on the 25 man roster is almost a certainty given his Contract. That essentially blocks any of the younger guys from making the club. Tekotte, for example is what, almost 10 years younger than Wise? My thought was that if the Yankees (or some other club) offered a prospect for Wise, the Sox could get younger and not be sacrificing too much. Actually, having a player with more speed come in to pinch run might add another dimension to what Wise can do. Outside this notion of a possible trade, I am interested to hear what any one thinks about Blake Tekotte and his chances to make the roster this season or beyond. Tekotte isn't much of a prospect, in fact, I'd be shocked if the Sox like him more than Jordan Danks. Wise should be a good back up. Plays all the OF positions pretty well. Can hit RHP. Can pinch run, and they love him in the clubhouse. I don't see a reason to make room for guys who haven't shown they can play at the major league level coming out of the gate if you think you can win. If it becomes apparent the Sox aren't going to contend at some point, then you can make room for these types of guys to give them a shot. Why help out the Yankees if you think you can win and the deal isn't going to make your team better? -
QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 4, 2013 -> 02:35 PM) $52 million guaranteed isn't that bad. But Flacco truly had a career month...and it just so happened that his career month came in the playoffs. Exactly. If Cutler had the same month and the same result happened for the Bears, and he was given the same contract, most Bears fans would call it a fair deal.

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Mar 3, 2013 -> 09:53 PM) This recent patch of baddity has coincided nicely with Reggie Rose' mouth diarrhea and the crescendo of will he/won't he speculation that spawned from the USA Today stuff. Too bad Reggie couldn't just stfu and stuff his dumb face into a pie (that would no doubt be purchased with his brother's money). Reggie Rose is the Bulls' Oney Guillen. Hopefully, Derrick can quiet him down and not encourage the idiocy like Ozzie did.

Sox trade RP Jeff Soptic for 3B Conor Gillaspie

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Feb 28, 2013 -> 12:01 PM) Using this logic, just about everyone was "close to being cut" last year. The White Sox would have about a $300 million payroll with only a couple of guys who were on the active roster making above minimum if all the DFA and release posts on this board ever came true. -
Andy Gonzalez can play third.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Feb 27, 2013 -> 12:55 PM) @SarahSpain: #Bears LT J'Marcus Webb arrested Sunday for possession of controlled substance, cannabis & paraphernalia. The way it is being reported you would think this guy got caught with 10 kilos of china white, not a little weed.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 27, 2013 -> 01:03 PM) This isn't "f*** the luxury tax I'm going for the throat" This is "aw shoot, I'm a little bit over and paying the luxury tax" But there was very little they could do since they are already over the cap. Especially with Rose a total question mark for this season.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 27, 2013 -> 08:46 AM) I can't believe people still care about this Manti deal. The only way it will ever go away is if he isn't a good NFL player and fades out. If he becomes a star and plays 15 years, there will be people mocking him for having a fake girlfriend in NFL stadiums 15 years from now.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Feb 27, 2013 -> 08:49 AM) I would bet on the latter. I understand the reasoning, I just think AJ has altered his approach and should hit for more power from here on out. If Flowers struggles and the Sox are short a LH bat, and AJ puts up good numbers, even some praising the move now will call him an idiot. The thing is, if the choice was AJ or Peavy, Hahn took the bigger gamble. Peavy was more than $20 million more expensive. -

QUOTE (southside_hitman @ Feb 27, 2013 -> 08:09 AM) If the Gila monster keeps hitting and can handle the hot corner defensively, this will prove to be Hahn's best move yet. My only issue with what Rick H. has done is the decision to let AJ go. This all came back to me yesterday when I saw AJ's interview after the Texas game. He seemed pretty sad about the whole situation and mentioned the Sox fans who he will always have a connection to. There is just a lot of mutual admiration. I don't understand why the Sox would not sign AJ to a one year deal. I know, it was a lot of money and he is near the end of his career. But consider the numbers he put up last season. And I am tired of hearing people knock AJ's defense while understating his offense. He handled the pitching staff well and improved a bit last season in terms of throwing out runners. AJ was one of the most clutch hitters we have had. In late innings he would seldom strike out when we needed him to put the ball in play. He was a Cub killer in the Crosstown Series. Now can Flowers battle up there when we simply need him to put the bat on the ball? Or is he simply an Adam Dunn from the Right side? My opinion is that AJ would really have helped us this season. Beyond the financial and other considerations that went into the decision, I hate when a team lets a player like AJ go, a guy who has created so much fan interest and allegiance over a long period of time. It makes it seem like the team lacks loyalty to its players, after expecting and receiving the same loyalty from them for so many years. And to some, it just makes them look cheap. I wish he brought AJ back as well. I think they could have brought Peavy back and assumed the financial hit for one season, but we will see what happens. If AJ hits 30 homers and has a huge year and Flowers struggles, Hahn is going to get skewered by a lot of people. If AJ hits like a 37 year old catcher with a lot of mileage and Flowers has a good year, he will be lauded. -
Why would anyone be concerned with results in meaningless games in February?
