  1. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 17, 2009 -> 07:34 PM) Oh, I agree. I'm not sympathizing with Cabrera here. All I am saying is that what the Sox did in regards to him last year was exploiting the rule in a manner which was not really envisioned when the rule was created. Due to the current economic conditions and by extension, the value of pre-arb players and draft picks has increased to a point which is higher than envisioned when the FA rule was created (at least in my opinion - obviously I wasn't there when it was). FA's should not be penalized in the marketplace such that it actually diminishes their ability to sign a lucrative contract. He always could have accepted the arbitration and been in line for a $10 million-$11 million contract. The Sox could have waived him and paid 20%, but if he didn't show a decline in skill in spring training there would have been a grievance filed and a good chance he would collect his money.
  2. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Dec 17, 2009 -> 07:30 PM) Rose is the only player on this team worth a damn (well Noah is ok). You have to love our 10 million dollar backup PG/SG who can't shoot and has never been a good distributor. I will never understand the love Bulls fans gave Kirk Hinrich, a decent but not great defender who never was a good shooter and never a good distributor. The one thing I will give him is he defends Wade really well. Our wings thrive at taking 20 ft jump shots which are basically the worst shot in basketball. Brad Miller has no business getting more than 10 minutes a game for an NBA team at this point and he is starting, just awesome. I don't understand those who think adding Chris Bosh will make the Bulls a championship contender. No way. They need Wade or LeBron. I agree with you, Rose then Noah and maybe Deng are keepers. Everyone else is roster filler. I think the Bulls organization should send personal apology letters to all their ticketholders.
  3. QUOTE (daa84 @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 10:28 PM) man remember jeff bajenaru vs. bobby jenks discussions back in 2005....some people were irate that bajenaru wasn't getting a shot over jenks....whats funny is they had a somewhat legit arguement .....good thing the baseball people with the sox were brighter than those here He had nice minor league numbers although he was a bit old for AAA and he posted on Soxtalk or did Q &As or something, so I could understand the sentiment, but he wasn't good. The Sox got Cintron for him. He pitched 1 inning for Arizona and gave up 3 homers.
  4. I just want to know why is it everyone who says KW is absolutely not lying when he talks about finances can say he's lying everytime he talks about players? Isn't even remotely possible when he uses the every dime that comes in goes out line, he's not being straight either? There are a couple things about this rotating DH, if it is true, that are troublesome. First, the guys he apparently will use are bench players. Why in the AL would you have a bench player in the line-up everyday? Second, a lot of players struggle DHing. I know Frank Thomas did for a while. There's no guarantee even if it is for a game or two, the players won't have a difficult time adjusting. If the Sox are going to use a rotating DH, they need to acquire another every day player. Not spread it around and have reserves in the line-up all the time. It would be suicide. What is interesting is KW has gone from getting personnel advise from Konerko and Thome and switched over to Ozzie, but I'm pretty sure he's BSing. No way KW would call it an offseason in the middle of December.
  5. FA will come to the White Sox. Chicago is always ranked as the favorite visiting city in MLB. Players generally go to the place that offers them the most cash. The White Sox aren't known for that, and if it becomes a bidding war, they usually drop out. It has nothing to do with wanting to play for Ozzie or on the other side of town, wanting to play at Wrigley Field. Its all about the benjamins.
  6. QUOTE (longshot7 @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 07:30 PM) Crap - I don't even remember Andy Gonzalez. When was he on the team? 2007
  7. Its so hard to pick the worst, but I have several more than 10 who deserve a mention: McKay Christensen Andy Gonzalez Ken Hill Jack Egbert Wes Whisler Arnie Munoz Armando Rios Todd Ritchie Julio Ramirez Jeff Bajenaro Josh Stewart Dewon Day Mike Myers Jose Paniagua Brent Lillibridge Some pretty bad players right there. I would have put Toby Hall on the list, but I like guys who make shaving cream pies.
  8. If KW is being straight, this is not encouraging. From the Sun Times: "Ozzie and I have been speaking on that, and we spoke on it again [Tuesday],'' Williams said of the DH spot. "Right now, what he would like to do is sit where we are right now because he likes flexibility with the DH position, whether it be a guy getting a break or keeping your bench players fresh. Guys like [Andruw] Jones, [Mark] Kotsay, [Omar] Vizquel, getting [Paul] Konerko off of his feet and getting into the DH spot ... he likes the flexibility that comes with it. "I've given him some names - this is a very critical last thing on our list. I certainly don't want to do anything from my seat that conflicts with what my manager wants, so regardless if I think there may be a need for a bigger left-handed bat in the middle of the lineup, he's the one in there and I fully support how he and his coaching staff see the situation fitting. That's something we'll continue to think about.'' KW already trying to deflect blame a la trading for Sandy Alomar for the 12th time if it doesn't work out. He's the GM. If he thinks the team would be better with another bat, its his job to get another bat. If there are no additions, Greg Walker is going to get more heat than ever before.
  9. The White Sox aren't going to win a bidding war, so it makes no sense to spend money watching him. Besides, its already leaked how he looked.
  10. I will say for a team that supposedly has no money, shelling out $82 million for Rios, Pierre and Teahan is curious at best. I'm pretty sure I'd trade those 3 for John Lackey.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 06:54 PM) I find it bizarre that with each move the Sox make, they get a little better, and yet the posts in PHT get more and more over-the-top mad. I'd think it would be the reverse. Weird. We do still need one more bat upgrade, at DH or elsewhere, though. And a backup C, though I think we have options in house for that which I'd be fine with. What happens with that extra bat, though, I think will give us the best picture of the offseason overall. I really don't know how you can say they are better now than they were on October 4. They might be, they might not be. The Sox were 7 games worse than MN. I know the popular position to take is Quentin will be healthy, Beckham will be around an entire year, Rios will be improved, Jenks will be better, the rotation is great and no one will get hurt, Teahan will shine away from KC, Putz will be the 2006-7 JJ Putz, etc. But can't Minnesota say the same thing? Mauer missed a month. Mourneau missed a month. JJ Hardy has just a good a chance to snap back as anyone the White Sox have acquired. People make a lot out of them moving out of the dome and losing their big advantage, but the dome had nothing to do with their kicking the White Sox around there in 2009, and their line-up has seemingly evolved to make them ready for the move outdoors. They have a pretty nice line-up. I would imagine the will have Slowey back as he missed half the season. The Sox still need a lot more offense. As soon as they get at least another significant bat, I will be optimistic.
  12. I don't love this trade, and I don't hate it. They aren't paying him much and he probably will be closer to Pods 2009 numbers in 2010 than Pods will. There are obviously more moves to be made. If you remember, KW said he wanted to get the team OBP up to .350. The guys he acquired, Pierre, Teahan, Jones, and Vizquel, really don't help accomplish that. A big bat or two I believe will be coming and perhaps someone we have penciled in the White Sox 2010 line up right now will be leaving. I really wouldn't mind the Sox getting Vlad. Bill James projects him to hit more homers, hit for a higher avg. and higher OBP than Matsui.
  13. Things are starting to happpen at a feverish pitch. Lackey signs, the Halladay deal, Matsui signs, now Cameron to Boston. I'm sure a White Sox move is around the corner.
  14. QUOTE (Ranger @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 05:45 PM) Knowing that most playoff games are low-scoring as it is, I'm not sure how you can automatically assume a first round exit. If healthy, the Sox pitching alone is good enough to take them a good distance in the postseason. They may not be as good as the Yankees on paper(if they had to play NY in the first round), but they'd be more than a move or two away from being as good as New York anyway. Nobody is as talented as the Yankees, so you can say, "first round exit, here we come!" for every team that may have to face them in the first round. It doesn't just apply to the Sox. I feel like there should be a greater undertstanding around here that getting to the playoffs is the most important thing to do. Regardless of how they do it. Because everything that happens up until then is entirely irrelevant. Too many "best teams on paper" have an early exit from the playoffs for that phenomenon to be considered insignificant. If the Sox get there, they have a good chance. Especially if they have strong pitching. That is totally inaccurate. In order for the White Sox making the playoffs to be considered a "miracle", you're saying that the division is equivalent to the East? You think the Twins and Tigers/Indians are as good as the Yankees and Red Sox? Hyperbole. One advantage the Sox have over teams in other divisions is the weakness of the AL Central. If they could roll in the division they would be able to set their playoff rotation, one thing they weren't able to do in 2008 and many overlook. Next year, they are going to take away some of the off days. You aren't going to be able to ge by with a 3 man rotation.
  15. I will agree if the offensive improvement is going to be based on Rios, Quentin being fully healthy for a full year, having Beckham an additional 2 months, that this has been a bad off season, because you have to remember the Sox lost a lot of HR and RBI with Thome and Dye being gone, and some batting average with Pods being gone and most of their steals with Pods and Getz gone, and the offense clearly wasn't good enough last year. You would probably be looking at a wash at best, but its the middle of December. No reason to panic yet. I will say when I read where Ozzie said Vizquel may be leading off and even DHing occassionally, it scared me. But he has to just be talking out of his behind.
  16. People here hated Thome. Thome is better than Cust and at least he won't hurt you in the field.
  17. QUOTE (goblue5699 @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 02:02 PM) Adam Miller seems like the type of guy Kenny would take a flier on. Plus Coop'll fix 'em. He has an injury problem. He may never pitch again.
  18. QUOTE (Ranger @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 03:01 PM) Isn't it likely that the Sox are seriously looking at both of these options? What's the harm in reporting that? No problem reporting it, its if any of these guys do get acquired, its what will follow. Like he broke all the stories. All you have to read to realize your buddy Joe is as unprofessional as they come is his tweets.
  19. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 10:16 AM) Agreed DA, and Peavy was definitely a financially motivated deal on the part of San Diego And KW was on the other end with the Swisher deal. He moved $27 million or so owed to a guy who hit .219 striking out all the time and was passed by Dewayne Wise. Swisher does alright. The guys coming back are basically nothing and people are up in arms, but I think the next couple of years they will be a lot happier with the players the Sox have that will be making the money that would have went to Swisher, than had he would have kept Nick Swisher. I thought and still think it was a good deal for the Sox, even though 10 years from now and even now, some may think KW got taken to the cleaners.
  20. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 09:01 AM) I still dont think it matters in the grand scheme of things because of the boom or bust nature of prospects. We can sit here and talk about how the Sox system is full of nobodies and lesser players, and that scouts look at the system with derision, but that same farm system netted them Peavy last year, and at this point the only player that looks like will truly stick at the Major league level is Richard. Prior to the last few years the system was subpar, and KW was masterful at being a snakeoil salesman to get what he wanted. Now with them focusing on minor league development, KW will be able to be less of a snakeoil salesman and more of a Rolex salesman and the deals will be a little easier, and the kids will be able to come up and produce. The other thing is when you are trading prospects for established players, it really isn't exactly how it used to be. Most trades aren't baseball trades, they are financial deals. Generally, if you are willing to pick up most of a big contract and send over some prospects, there is a pretty good chance when the trade is evaluated 10 years later, you will look like a genius. See Hendry, Jim. It still happens where you will get burned, but giving up prospects for established players usually works out in your favor these days because its not all about the talent coming back. Its one reason I think the Peavy trade is KW's all-time best. He might have even been able to give up less, but Clayton Richard and Aaron Poreda is all it cost for Jake Peavy? That's a no brainer.
  21. Now Cowley is saying the Sox are thinking Juan Pierre. If he throws out all the names and one comes to the Sox he will be the guy that knew all along.
  22. QUOTE (Big Daddy Kool @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 08:50 AM) Wasn't one of the reasons he was traded was because the pitching staff hating pitching to him? That was almost 6 years ago. He supposedly has gotten better at calling games, but he's not coming here. I think the big reason he was traded was Freddy Garcia was coming back in the deal.
  23. QUOTE (G&T @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 08:44 AM) Yeah, I see what you are saying and I agree. IMO, teams still trade with KW because he is the only guy willing to trade prospects these days because he doesn't over value mediocre talent. Even if the guys aren't very good, they are young and cheap and can fill the roster. That's probably why we see deals with KC and Oakland so often. Also if you look at the 3 DFA'd guys and the trades they were involved in, Jeremy Reed was 23, had just hit over .400 as a 22 year old in AA and went with Miguel Olivo, the White Sox starting C at the time and Mike Morse, for Freddy Garcia, a guy about 100 games away from being a FA, and a guy with some issues off the field and on the previous season. So, at the time, if this was Marinerstalk.com I think the majority would have been in favor of the deal. Broadway went for Raul Castro, so that was pretty much bust for bust, and Kotsay was DFA'd by Boston. Everyone knew at the time Boston was exactly the perfect spot for BA, but they were going to have to pay Kotsay if they released him so they got a part. What is sad is a lot of these guys popped up on top Sox prospects lists. That has to change. Beckham is a start. Hopefully these other guys continue the improvement but we won't know until they prove they are solid major leaguers. I do think guys with scouting backgrounds who post on websites are looking at the Sox guys in a lesser light, and maybe its because of all the busts. Keith Law doesn't have much good to say about any Sox prospect and the other guy on espn.com covering the AZ Fall League says Danks is very overrrated. Maybe he is or maybe he's taking a calculated guess basing it at least partially on all the failed prospects that have come up through the White Sox system.
  24. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 10, 2009 -> 01:55 PM) For my B-Day, my sister gave me two tickets to a Beer and Bacon Tasting and a bar on the north side. That was available on groupon.com last week. I must say I do like beer and I do like bacon.
  25. Next time anyone wants to use minor league stats as proof a guy will be a MLB stud, just check out Jeremy Reed's numbers. As a 22 year old in Birmingham, the guy hit .409 with an OPS 1.065, with speed and you know he's a solid defensive player. Then he comes up to Seattle, hits close to .400 in about 60 AB and then just tanks. At least Greg Walker can't be blamed.
