  1. This would be KW's finest trade ever. Even if Peavy blew out his elbow his first White Sox start. Pitching wins.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:40 AM) You got your perpetual message out... Yes Kenny is cheap, now quit spoiling the thread and move along. Acquiring Peavy will just prove my point. The one you told me was wrong. I just don't want to see the BS if he says no and KW goes back to his $.50 routine wondering if they will be able to pay the electric bill.
  3. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:33 AM) The Pads need a SS, would you give up Alexei? The White Sox can give up a middle infielder. If the choice is keep Alexei and don't get Peavy or have Alexei at SS and Clayton Richard on the mound, its not that hard of a choice considering the White Sox have other options. Their best prospect is a SS.
  4. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:35 AM) Good luck with that. The only team in baseball who has been more competitive than the Sox in the current decade is maybe the Yankees, and some people still think KW is a crappy GM. Boston has been so have the Angels. The White Sox should be competitive. The only teams that cost more to go see are the 2 NY teams, Boston and the Cubs.
  5. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:34 AM) Exactly! This is similar to the Bears getting Cutler. You don't pass up the chance to get a franchise quarterback in/or entering his prime and you don't pass up the chance to get a former Cy Young winning franchise pitcher. If he says no, hey, you tried. But, I'm not just going to say, "OK, who's next, we have this money slotted to go to Peavy, he didn't want it, I'll give it to the next pitcher available." But it shows they aren't at or over their salary limit like they have been preaching. I'm not suggesting they just give all that money to the next guy. What I'm saying is their every dollar in goes out isn't accurate. They obviously have some cash laying around.
  6. QUOTE (DBAHO @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:29 AM) Was there any guy in FA FWIW that you would have given $10M to? Peavy's a franchise pitcher. You don't get the chance to acquire a pitcher like him, especially when you consider how much a team like the Yankees would have given him if he hit free agency in the past off-season (think Sabathia money). Its a lot more than $10. I'm just thinking this year. KW only has $.50 remember.
  7. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:28 AM) Is he supposed to add $10M for the wrong guy? My whole point being if the guy is even moderately hesitant to pitch in the AL, is he the guy you want to give all this money to? As I said, if he comes here, IMO its KW best move, if he doesn't he obviously wasn't the "right guy" which is the spin KW is going to put on the White Sox willing to add payroll, because IIRC KW was talking about playing day games to save on the electric bill when he was crying about being broke.
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:18 AM) Who are these "people" that these players have that are feeding lines to the media. And why is Peavy so scared to pitch in the AL? PLenty of good arms throw in the AL, you dont think you are one of them? That's what I don't understand. If he's willing to play for the Cubs or Brewers, why would he even have to think about the White Sox. It makes you wonder if he truely is an "ace". If he says yes, its KW's best trade IMO. If he says no, good riddance. I'm actually shocked that they have agreed to a deal if they actually have. If Peavy says no, KW is going to have to do a lot of backpedaling when talking about finances. I'm sure he'll give the line JR was willing to bust the budget by $10 million to get the "right guy". The right guy being a guy who is hesitant to pitch in the AL.
  9. When this trade falls through, will KW be willing to pick up salary elsewhere? He obviously isn't at his limit.
  10. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ May 21, 2009 -> 08:32 AM) I don't know why he would want to stay in San Diego. Yeah the weather is nice, but the team is gonna be awful for years. He either stays in SD or the Padres can trade him to a place he finds more desirable. I don't know what's wrong with Chicago in the summer. He doesn't want to go to the AL, but if the White Sox decide to become bullies, they can dominate the AL Central for years.
  11. If this is true, and I still have my doubts, its the type of move KW should have been looking at months ago instead of going cheap. I thought they were at their payroll limit. If there is any truth to this rumor, it does show you they BS about that. Of course the Hunter and Fukudome pursuits are more proof of that. A couple of other things, maybe Floyd is in the deal. The Sox would not be getting SD to pay part of Peavy's contract because financial relief is the reason SD is trading him. Interesting that Peavy supposedly has reservations about playing for Ozzie. There have been a few names that have rejected trades to the White Sox. Delgado, Edmonds...the only guy I know who rejected going to the Cubs is Palmiero, which probably was a big mistake by him. He may have avoided his positive test or it could have been more awesome for us if he tested positive as a Cub. If this is true, it would be KW's finest hour IMO. Pitching wins. This just reminds me of the Soriano rumor in 2006. Probably not as much to it as has been reported.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 20, 2009 -> 09:50 PM) We have thirty or fourty million coming off of the books, this signing would still lead to a decrease in total payroll year over year... Why is that so complex? And please quote where I said that. Everytime I b****ed about the payroll going down and prices going up, and mentioned all the money coming off the books after this season, you came back with all the lost sponsor money, how the Sox spending money could destroy the franchise etc. Now some 14 year old comes up with a false rumor and you now agree with me there is plenty of room for additional payroll. Amazing. At least now you think the White Sox haven't spent every dime that comes in, and when this rumor turns out to be false, you will post some more about adding some payroll.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 20, 2009 -> 09:43 PM) Interesting. A couple of things make it possible, dispite the Peavy salary. First of all, we have a ton of salary coming off of the books in the next few years. Secondly we are LOADED with offensive players. In reality, I would poop myself it ever happened. You said signing players this offseason was financial suicide for the White Sox. Now picking up Peavy makes a lot of financial sense? For some reason, I don't buy this rumor at all.
  14. That will help the avg. He was 6-60 after an 0-1 count before that safety.
  15. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ May 20, 2009 -> 08:22 PM) Paulie man if you had been like this last year. He was hurt. He's still a hitter.
  16. Fields sucked last year. Crede helped the Sox win some games. Fields is at a crossroads IMO. He has to pick it up. I really think his White Sox career for all intents and purposes is OVA if he gets sent down again, unless its a real short trip. I know Jerry Owens came back from the dead this year for one last fling, but there were extenuating circumstances.
  17. QUOTE (ptatc @ May 20, 2009 -> 02:40 PM) But not necessarily short term thinking only. They will sacrifice some games to get him right and producing in the future. The same with Getz and Fields. The team will let them go through growing pains to see what they have for the future. Players go through a learning process and people just need to be patient. The classic cliched example is Robin Ventura. How many people on this board would have wanted to get rid of him during the 0-41 to start his career? That isn't struggling that is horrible. Yet , the sox learned by the way he was handling it, that he could be productive later on in his career. So, as much as it hursts in the short term. We must have patience. Floyd is a little farther along in his career. If he gets getting lit up, he's leaving the rotation. There comes a point when "growing pains" become confidence destroyers. The Sox took Jose Contreras out of the rotation in 2007 and he had a lot more money left on his contract than Floyd does.

  20. QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 20, 2009 -> 12:51 PM) Fields has an option remaining. I think the White Sox want to avoid sending him back to AAA. Another stint down there probably ends his status as a prospect. He has over 1100 AAA AB. But something needs to be done. Platoon him, play him against lefties , where he has had a lot of his success. If the team falls out of contention, then let him flail away and once and for all to see if you have something worth salvaging or go in a different direction. Viciedo doesn't appear to be much with the glove either, You owe it to the organization to try to win right now, and Josh Fields at 3rd base everyday isn't working.
  21. QUOTE (chw42 @ May 20, 2009 -> 12:08 PM) Fields' UZR/150 (Ultimate Zone Rating per 150 games) is -13.6. His UZR is at -4.1 right now. If you compare that to a good fielder like Longoria, whose UZR/150 is 18.6 and UZR is currently 5.6, that's bad. Fields is below average right now. His UZR is pretty much what it was in 2007. He does have potential to be average IMO. He has made some real good plays since he's been with the Sox. I don't know who the organization thought they were fooling when they talked about his 2 weekends with Joey Cora this past offseason, maybe they were just trying to build his confidence, but it seems more balls make it past him down the line even some that aren't hit very hard, and you wonder how long the Sox can have him there defensively. Betemit's defense can't be that much worse, and he has to be better than this current version of Fields offensively. I have a feeling he's also taking his offensive struggles with him to the field, and he's one guy that can't afford to do that.
  22. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 20, 2009 -> 11:37 AM) Nix is a plus-plus defender, I don't know that he has ever played 3rd but I'm sure he could handle it. Betemit is atrocious. Fields is not as bad this year in the field as people make him out to be. Last night, Fields was awful in the field. There were 4 potential plays to be made. An average fielder makes at least one, probably two. A great fielder makes 2 probably 3. Brooks Robinson in his prime makes all 4. Fields made none. He really has slow reactions on groundballs. He cannot hit second. That is giving the opponent an advantage. BTW, what's the deal with Pods new 16" softball style of running up and hitting the ball? I could maybe understand it if he was hitting grounders giving him a running start to first base, but everytime he performs this, he hits the ball in the air, something he shouldn't be doing too much of.
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 20, 2009 -> 10:56 AM) There is no way in hell they would put Gavin in the pen or on waivers, thats just a retarded argument. He is one of their young guns that they have invested a hell of alot more than they have in other players, he'll pitch every 5th day or go on the DL. Since he isnt hurt, but only is out of rythmn, he should be out there every turn until he figures it out. If the White Sox would sent Jose Contreras to Charlotte, they would have no problem putting Gavin Floyd in the bullpen if his performance continues to blow.
  24. I don't know why there is any talk of Ozzie getting fired. The only thing that could get him fired is his mouth. As long as he doesn't say anything so obnoxious the Sox have no other choice, Ozzie will be the manager as long as he wants to be, at least as long as JR is around.
