  1. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 27, 2009 -> 07:24 PM) The Sox are moving Beckham to 3rd, at least for the time being, and they can't do that in AA because they'd be blocking Viciedo. Now, they could have opted to move Viciedo up to AAA and let him play with Contreras while keeping Beck's in AA, but I think they also feel Beck's will be promoted soon anyway and Viciedo is finally getting rolling in AA so no reason to move him up too soon. Viciedo seems destined to be an OF IMO.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 27, 2009 -> 08:42 PM) Unless there's been an unpublicised change: Agent: Len Hardison, Kyle Rote Jr. A friend of mine was a back-up QB in the NFL for a few years. I'm pretty sure his agent was Kyle Rote Jr. Anyway, Rote negotiated a contract with the Cleveland Browns over the phone while Scottie Pippen who he also represented at the time was in his office. Pip said to him when he hung up, "Is that all those guys make?"
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2009 -> 07:30 PM) They also only have Haren for a year and a half, which is a huge consideration for how much you have to give up to get a pitcher. Peavy the Sox would control until 2013. Also the D'backs financial problems have been long documented. I did appreciate the completely one sided postings from Forbes though. Googling the actual FULL STORY gives a very different picture. The team made $3.9 million last year. The big huge $177 million you posted is gross income, I am sure you know the difference. That was before having an only 84% renewal as quoted in the article I looked up, plus their attendance is down a full 10% this year versus last. The interesting part of what you posted in the TV deal is they get 150 games, where as most teams have a much bigger split up of games, which is what leads to the "most lucrative". They get the most games out of any deal, so they pay more than most. The other interesting part you left out is that the network sells all of the advertising during those games, which means the team sees none of that money, unlike most teams in professional sports, which also leads the deal to be worth more, as the team is losing out on that revenue stream. We have also had the debate over what team valuation actually means... nothing. That isn't income, profit, capital... nothing. That is a number of a piece of paper. GM is worth billions, it doesn't mean they are worth a dime. It is a terrible argument for if a team is losing money or not. http://money.cnn.com/2009/02/18/magazines/...rtune/index.htm I was just pointing out your saying they are losing $40-50 million a year, is far from correct. As of 2008, the ownership group had cut over $100 million from their debt.
  4. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 27, 2009 -> 05:17 PM) That may be part of the reasoning here. If Fields gets going, then you have a nice problem - too many good players at certain positions. If he fails, then Beckham is ready. You have staged Beckham for this, as well as provided further motivation for Fields to get going. If Fields needs the Sox top prospect promoted to AAA to motivate him, there's more than a slight problem. Even though I'm not a Fields guy, I don't think motivation is his problem.
  5. I really don't understand the need to "promote" Beckham to Charlotte unless they want to throw Charlotte's owners a bone. They can't be too happy with the White Sox right now.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2009 -> 06:15 PM) The Diamondbacks might not be under a public mandate to cut salary, but they have been losing $40-50 million a year when the economy was good. With them having a bad time, there very well could be a quiet look into a large salary dump down there. Its not like he's making $15 million a year. If he was available for the same price that Peavy could be had, considering you know he's been successful in the AL, his contract is at least $20 million cheaper if not more, because as far as I know doesn't have a NTC, KW would have been a fool to agree to trade for Peavy instead of Haren. There's probably a 99.99% chance he's not getting traded, and if the .01 % does come to fruition KW is going to have to empty the Birmingham roster to even have a chance. BTW, they aren't losing $40-50 million a year unless you're using Jerry Reinsdorf's accountant The Arizona Diamondbacks are valued at $390 million, placing the franchise 19th out of the 30 teams in Major League Baseball, according to Forbes annual list of team valuations released Thursday. That’s up 3 percent from last year, as the D-backs received a boost from their television contract with Fox Sports Arizona and a successful year on the field. The team challenged the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League West crown for most of the year, before faltering at the end of the season. According to Forbes research, the D-backs brought in $177 million in the 2008 season. Two years ago, the team signed a reported eight-year, $250 million deal with Fox Sports Arizona, among the most lucrative deals in baseball.
  7. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 27, 2009 -> 03:32 PM) Oakland did it. And apparently DBacks dont have much of a fan base as is. Not implying that it will happen, just sayin. Oakland couldn't pay him. The D-Backs gave him an extension. Trading him would be worse than the Sox trading Buerhle for some prospects in July if they are out of it.
  8. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 27, 2009 -> 03:27 PM) I'd be surprised if you could get Haren without parting with Beckham. I'd be surprised if you could get Haren by parting with Beckham. Talk about wanting to destroy a fan base. Trade a guy signed reasonably and long term who is an ace for a bunch of prospects.
  9. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 27, 2009 -> 03:21 PM) So how will the DBacks look at this, will it be that they need Haren as the foundation for the future then as the healthy guy, or do they look and say that he's healthy lets get what we can for him? I personally don't understand while they would be holding a fire sale for him. I think some on this board just assume if a team is bad they dump all their players making any money for prospects so they can be bad longer. He's reasonably signed. He won't even be making Javy Vazquez money until the year after next. Its totally different than the Peavy situation. Even if he was available there would be more bidders for him and Poreda and Richard aren't going to be at the the top of the shopping list.
  10. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 27, 2009 -> 03:18 PM) Is Webb hurt this year? He has shoulder issues and won't be pitching for a while.
  11. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 27, 2009 -> 02:57 PM) I could trade my dog for Harden at this point. Now for Haren, I think a similar package gets it done to be honest. The Dbacks have to cut payroll eventually, and they will send off some vets pretty soon. Now if we could throw them two impact arms and possibly a young bat, it probably could get done. There probably would be some competition for Haren if he became available. A lot more teams would be able to enter into the bidding, and he's a lot cheaper. Its going to cost a lot more than Richard and Poreda. We don't even know for sure who the other 2 were except it wasn't Beckham.
  12. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 27, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) The dbacks also (from what I remember) have nothing that looks like an impact arm in their system as of now. Poreda would immediately go to the top of the heap. So you post time and time again how Poreda is nothing but a bullpen arm, now you say he'd be very attractive to a team that needs an impact arm and would be willing to trade a very reasonably priced ace in order to get him. It doesn't make sense.
  13. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ May 27, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) Ummm...why? Is it because the Padres are in a deeper financial hole and would take less? Please explain why when you post stuff like this...cuts down on post count. The Padres have to trade Peavy or trim a lot of payroll elsewhere. The D-Backs don't have to trade Harden, and he's signed for a lot less money. I'd take either of them, but there is no way Poreda and Richard and a couple of lower level prospects get you Harden.
  14. Haren will cost a lot more than Peavy, if he's even available.
  15. Black Jack McDowell's take: From the first rumblings of Carlos Quentin's heel and foot problems, I knew from the brief descriptions we the public were receiving, that it was not good news. Now that the White Sox training staff has confirmed what I was certain of for a while, Quentin is suffering from plantar fasciitis, I'll tell you it is not good news for Quentin or the White Sox. Plantar fasciitis is basically an irritation or slight tearing of the long, thick band of tissue that connects the ball of the foot to the heel. Once it is irritated during a season with such a grueling schedule as baseball, it will be a daily mess for all involved. There is no quick fix. Cortisone shots will not alleviate the problem. When White Sox trainer Herm Schneider reported that Quentin felt "a pop" in the area in yesterday's rout of the Angels, and interim manager Joey Cora was quoted as saying "I hear that's a good thing," that should shed some light on the severity of the injury. You see, the only remedy for Plantar fasciitis is to surgically sever the connective tissue and proceed without it! But that procedure would end Quentin's season today. So, the plan of action (which I have witnessed first hand several times over my career) is to have the player push through the pain, as much as is bearable, and HOPE the ligament will "pop" and tear itself! Gotta love what an athlete will do to stay in the lineup! And let me tell you, it is a very painful injury that colors every move Quentin will make on the field, let alone every step he takes off it. White Sox fans should hope for that big "pop" sooner, rather than later.
  16. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:53 AM) I thought there was even a time limit before the game for it to be the team's call. I remember, i think it was the 2000 team, where the Sox had a weird rotation glitch either due to injury or a previous double header where Tanyon Sutrze was going to have to start a game and the Sox called the game like 8 hours beforehand due to bad weather forecast and I remember the reporter saying the Sox had the call up until a certain point then the umps had the call. Whatever though, yeah, once it's gametime or during the game it's the umps, could you imagine games in September when a competing team was up 1 run after the game was official, they would be rushing to call it during a light shower. Up until the line-ups have been turned in, I believe its the home team's call except if its the opponents last trip in that year.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 27, 2009 -> 11:13 AM) If he couldn't stick in the Nationals' rotation, he better be willing to accept a minor league assigment somewhere, because otherwise he's going to be sitting at home. ........Counting the $2.6 million the Nationals foolishly gave him. If Leo Mazzone couldn't harness him and the Orioles gave up on him, I can't imagine why someone would actually pay him a good wage to do what he does.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:48 AM) Great that is two players in forty years. Man I can't believe I would be willing to give Fields a chance over a minor league free agent. By the way, when should we start playing DeWayne Wise over Carlos Quentin. Yeah, I need to walk away now. Actually a couple of other familiar names were guys who had been released and went on to do well. Hawk Harrelson and Tom Paciorek. It may help explain Hawk's enthusiam for a player we all know probably won't amount to much. Also, Ed Farmer was released a couple of times before he found his best success. At the very least, Nix is on track for a future gig in the White Sox broadcast booth.
  19. I'm not suggesting Nix is the answer, in fact I agree with you that most likely he is worthless in the long run. However, he is hitting homers now, and I think the Sox should ride the hot streak. The White Sox gave him a major league contract. Obviously someone somewhere saw something.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:44 AM) Not a single one of those guys was exposed to waivers after major league experience. Nix was. Still no one wanted him. Comparing drafts, minor leaguers and major leaguers are three different things and sets of circumstances. The White Sox acquired Jim Kaat on waivers. Nix probably won't amount to anything, but why not throw him out there while he's hot?
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:39 AM) How many of those guys were released, placed on waivers, not signed by any team, and signed to a minor league contract? I agree with your point, and chances are Nix won't be an All Star, but there are exceptions. Bobby Jenks. Guys like Abreu and Santana were rule 5 guys so in essence they were on waivers. Magglio was exposed to the rule 5 while a White Sox farmhand, and nobody took him, but its very rare.
  22. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:16 AM) It would have to be alot more than that. If it really is centered around one of those guys and we threw in some pitching prospects, then you definitely have to go for it. Nix was available for the minimum and SF passed. I highly doubt they would trade a 24 year old pitcher who is 5-1 with a 2.40 ERA in a deal centered around him.
  23. QUOTE (watchtower41 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:13 AM) FWIW, Levine mentioned Cain on the Afternoon Saloon yesterday as well...adding it could be a very good fit especiallyif we could dangle a Nix or Getz in their direction Matt Cain for Nix or Getz? Sign me up. I don't even think X-Box would allow that. I was wondering if Ramirez and a top prospect or 2 could get the job done. I think the prospect would have to be very highly thought of. They are going to have to make room for Beckham fairly soon.
  24. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:19 AM) Please explain cause I don't see it at all. I was teasing you, you had Nix vs. Nix.
  25. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:06 AM) Tell me how Nix does not have a better approach than Nix. Please tell me. From watching them, they look like two complete opposites. Please tell me what Nix is doing wrong at bat. I think their approaches are very similar.
