  1. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 27, 2009 -> 03:21 PM) So how will the DBacks look at this, will it be that they need Haren as the foundation for the future then as the healthy guy, or do they look and say that he's healthy lets get what we can for him? I personally don't understand while they would be holding a fire sale for him. I think some on this board just assume if a team is bad they dump all their players making any money for prospects so they can be bad longer. He's reasonably signed. He won't even be making Javy Vazquez money until the year after next. Its totally different than the Peavy situation. Even if he was available there would be more bidders for him and Poreda and Richard aren't going to be at the the top of the shopping list.
  2. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 27, 2009 -> 03:18 PM) Is Webb hurt this year? He has shoulder issues and won't be pitching for a while.
  3. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 27, 2009 -> 02:57 PM) I could trade my dog for Harden at this point. Now for Haren, I think a similar package gets it done to be honest. The Dbacks have to cut payroll eventually, and they will send off some vets pretty soon. Now if we could throw them two impact arms and possibly a young bat, it probably could get done. There probably would be some competition for Haren if he became available. A lot more teams would be able to enter into the bidding, and he's a lot cheaper. Its going to cost a lot more than Richard and Poreda. We don't even know for sure who the other 2 were except it wasn't Beckham.
  4. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 27, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) The dbacks also (from what I remember) have nothing that looks like an impact arm in their system as of now. Poreda would immediately go to the top of the heap. So you post time and time again how Poreda is nothing but a bullpen arm, now you say he'd be very attractive to a team that needs an impact arm and would be willing to trade a very reasonably priced ace in order to get him. It doesn't make sense.
  5. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ May 27, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) Ummm...why? Is it because the Padres are in a deeper financial hole and would take less? Please explain why when you post stuff like this...cuts down on post count. The Padres have to trade Peavy or trim a lot of payroll elsewhere. The D-Backs don't have to trade Harden, and he's signed for a lot less money. I'd take either of them, but there is no way Poreda and Richard and a couple of lower level prospects get you Harden.
  6. Haren will cost a lot more than Peavy, if he's even available.
  7. Black Jack McDowell's take: From the first rumblings of Carlos Quentin's heel and foot problems, I knew from the brief descriptions we the public were receiving, that it was not good news. Now that the White Sox training staff has confirmed what I was certain of for a while, Quentin is suffering from plantar fasciitis, I'll tell you it is not good news for Quentin or the White Sox. Plantar fasciitis is basically an irritation or slight tearing of the long, thick band of tissue that connects the ball of the foot to the heel. Once it is irritated during a season with such a grueling schedule as baseball, it will be a daily mess for all involved. There is no quick fix. Cortisone shots will not alleviate the problem. When White Sox trainer Herm Schneider reported that Quentin felt "a pop" in the area in yesterday's rout of the Angels, and interim manager Joey Cora was quoted as saying "I hear that's a good thing," that should shed some light on the severity of the injury. You see, the only remedy for Plantar fasciitis is to surgically sever the connective tissue and proceed without it! But that procedure would end Quentin's season today. So, the plan of action (which I have witnessed first hand several times over my career) is to have the player push through the pain, as much as is bearable, and HOPE the ligament will "pop" and tear itself! Gotta love what an athlete will do to stay in the lineup! And let me tell you, it is a very painful injury that colors every move Quentin will make on the field, let alone every step he takes off it. White Sox fans should hope for that big "pop" sooner, rather than later.
  8. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:53 AM) I thought there was even a time limit before the game for it to be the team's call. I remember, i think it was the 2000 team, where the Sox had a weird rotation glitch either due to injury or a previous double header where Tanyon Sutrze was going to have to start a game and the Sox called the game like 8 hours beforehand due to bad weather forecast and I remember the reporter saying the Sox had the call up until a certain point then the umps had the call. Whatever though, yeah, once it's gametime or during the game it's the umps, could you imagine games in September when a competing team was up 1 run after the game was official, they would be rushing to call it during a light shower. Up until the line-ups have been turned in, I believe its the home team's call except if its the opponents last trip in that year.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 27, 2009 -> 11:13 AM) If he couldn't stick in the Nationals' rotation, he better be willing to accept a minor league assigment somewhere, because otherwise he's going to be sitting at home. ........Counting the $2.6 million the Nationals foolishly gave him. If Leo Mazzone couldn't harness him and the Orioles gave up on him, I can't imagine why someone would actually pay him a good wage to do what he does.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:48 AM) Great that is two players in forty years. Man I can't believe I would be willing to give Fields a chance over a minor league free agent. By the way, when should we start playing DeWayne Wise over Carlos Quentin. Yeah, I need to walk away now. Actually a couple of other familiar names were guys who had been released and went on to do well. Hawk Harrelson and Tom Paciorek. It may help explain Hawk's enthusiam for a player we all know probably won't amount to much. Also, Ed Farmer was released a couple of times before he found his best success. At the very least, Nix is on track for a future gig in the White Sox broadcast booth.
  11. I'm not suggesting Nix is the answer, in fact I agree with you that most likely he is worthless in the long run. However, he is hitting homers now, and I think the Sox should ride the hot streak. The White Sox gave him a major league contract. Obviously someone somewhere saw something.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:44 AM) Not a single one of those guys was exposed to waivers after major league experience. Nix was. Still no one wanted him. Comparing drafts, minor leaguers and major leaguers are three different things and sets of circumstances. The White Sox acquired Jim Kaat on waivers. Nix probably won't amount to anything, but why not throw him out there while he's hot?
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:39 AM) How many of those guys were released, placed on waivers, not signed by any team, and signed to a minor league contract? I agree with your point, and chances are Nix won't be an All Star, but there are exceptions. Bobby Jenks. Guys like Abreu and Santana were rule 5 guys so in essence they were on waivers. Magglio was exposed to the rule 5 while a White Sox farmhand, and nobody took him, but its very rare.
  14. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:16 AM) It would have to be alot more than that. If it really is centered around one of those guys and we threw in some pitching prospects, then you definitely have to go for it. Nix was available for the minimum and SF passed. I highly doubt they would trade a 24 year old pitcher who is 5-1 with a 2.40 ERA in a deal centered around him.
  15. QUOTE (watchtower41 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:13 AM) FWIW, Levine mentioned Cain on the Afternoon Saloon yesterday as well...adding it could be a very good fit especiallyif we could dangle a Nix or Getz in their direction Matt Cain for Nix or Getz? Sign me up. I don't even think X-Box would allow that. I was wondering if Ramirez and a top prospect or 2 could get the job done. I think the prospect would have to be very highly thought of. They are going to have to make room for Beckham fairly soon.
  16. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:19 AM) Please explain cause I don't see it at all. I was teasing you, you had Nix vs. Nix.
  17. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:06 AM) Tell me how Nix does not have a better approach than Nix. Please tell me. From watching them, they look like two complete opposites. Please tell me what Nix is doing wrong at bat. I think their approaches are very similar.
  18. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 27, 2009 -> 08:30 AM) Chris Young has had 3x the (meaningful) PAs in the majors, he has been well over the amount of PAs you need to see before you can judge how well he'll do in the majors for a while now (~800-1000) while Fields has only had about 600, with a season where he was injured and sent back to AAA - through no fault of his own - in between. Also Young has never hit for a high average in the pros, ever. There's really nothing to suggest a ceiling he's going to reach where he suddenly becomes a .290-.300 type hitter, I don't know why some people seem to think that. He isn't any more likely to do that and become a leadoff hitter than Fields. Fields is 26, Young is 25. There is not even a full year in between them, Fields born in December 1982 IIRC and Young born in September 1983. That's another reach. As I said, they both suck. So you are washed up at 25 because you got to the big leagues sooner, but 26 there's still a learning curve. Gotcha. I'd bet $1 million if KW was offered Chris Young straight up for Josh Fields right now he'd do it.
  19. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 26, 2009 -> 11:15 PM) AJ's slugging percentage is down, his OBP is down, his average is down. Are you stating otherwise? You're repeating the same thing over and over and over and OVER again. We know. You're not discussing anything. You're rambling on about the same exact thing to nobody. We get the point. He's also a 32 year old catcher, not 24, but keep going. If AJP is ample proof Greg Walker is a bad hitting coach, there aren't any good ones in baseball.
  20. Daniel Cabrera DFA'd by Washington. I cannot believe they gave this guy $2.6 million this past offseason.
  21. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 27, 2009 -> 12:42 AM) He's hitting .173 with 3 HR and 9 RBI. He's walked 7 times and struck out 44 times. Just thought I should bring this up. What is really weird is how you defend Josh Fields every chance you get but rip this guy. They have basically been the same offensive player in the major leagues except Young runs better and plays better defense and is younger. They both suck, but why would Young's stats at this point be tell-tale, at least so important you have to make a thread about it, and Fields' stats mean very little? Again, Young is a younger player.
  22. Why is Hawk b****ing about the night game on getaway day? Thursday is an off day. The White Sox don't play home games during the day for every getaway day.
  23. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ May 25, 2009 -> 10:23 PM) Jim Thome and Javy Vazquez waived NTC clauses to come here, despite Ozzie's reputation in national media. Vazquez demanded a trade from Arizona, and even though I don't really buy Ozzie being all that loved by his players, I don't buy anyone not coming to the White Sox because they don't want to play for him. I could see where his act could get old, but its not like he's a total ass to his players.
  24. The Angels have 3 hits in 6 innings against Colon. They probably need to fire their hitting coach.
