  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 05:56 PM) And here is the dumbest thing to ever be said. According to Cubs ass kisser Paul Sullivan (on ESPN 1000), the reason Peavy and Oswalt didn't want to pitch in the AL Central for the Sox is possibly because the other teams in the AL Central play in bland cities (Detroit, Minnesota, Cleveland, KC). Thus, that's why they'd rather play for the Cubs and travel to the beautiful cities of St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Milwaukee. Paul Sullivan claims to be a Sox fan. That's got to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
  2. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 06:58 PM) Not really. I suppose Nick Swisher should get a standing O when he comes back? Here's my thoughts on OC, he didn't want to play for the White Sox for at least $10 million, so he's playing in Oakland for $3 million. He's been punished enough. I don't like him, but I'm not going to boo him.
  3. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 05:15 PM) the old baseball idea of "can't lose your job to injury" is very stupid. if Ozzie just puts Wise back into the starting lineup day in and day out i'll be surprised and pissed. Ask Wally Pipp.
  4. QUOTE (almagest @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 02:17 PM) This isn't a very good example. Kids who have no interest in academics or athletics don't go to college. So what's your point? Colleges shouldn't recruit star players because said player might break his ankle? Or colleges shouldn't boot a walk-on player off their roster for a player like Rose because the walk-on might be better than the star recruit? That doesn't make any sense at all. Sure, they technically have options, but realistically they have to go to college. The only other even semi-realistic option is to play in a good European league for a while, but that denies them a lot of local and national media coverage, as well as opportunities to be seen by scouts. My point is guys who don't belong in college shouldn't go to college just because they can put a ball in a basket. The fact that he had to cheat to even do that shows a bigger problem. If going to college increases his chances in the NBA draft, then the player should have to take his academics seriously enough to be eligible to play. Just like everyone else in school needs to maintain a certain level of academic abilily in order to land a job of their choice. Rose didn't do that. He had no business being in college. Its not his fault the NBA won't let him into their draft out of HS. It may not be his fault Simeon changed a grade. It may not be his fault his brother took money. It is his fault someone took the test with his name on it.
  5. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 01:28 PM) Not as much to tip your cap to this year. But c'mon...they are just giving credit where credit is due. They destroy the Twins in Chicago. There's no reason they can't destroy the Twins in Minneapolis. I feel the last few seasons they have lost several series there before one pitch was even throw. Convincing yourself that your opponent is so great and has such a huge advantage isn't going to do any help to your winning percentage.
  6. If its no big deal for Derrick Rose to do what he did, why would it be a big deal for a guy who isn't an NBA prospect, but equally unprepared and unqualified for college to do the exact same thing? Why should anyone competing athletically in college have any business being a college student and have to show some sort of aptitude to be able to actually make progress towards a degree? Who really knows how all these guys are going to pan out. The Flying Illini's most unheralded recruit was Kendall Gill. Have you ever heard him talk about the recruiting visit he took when Bardo got all the attention and he was basically ignored? He turned out to be their best player. Rose had stardom written all over him, but what if he broke his ankle the first day of practice?
  7. QUOTE (Felix @ May 30, 2009 -> 08:56 AM) I wish more Sox fans had this opinion. So far the AL Central is about as ugly as everyone predicted it would be. It's amazing to think that despite how awful the Sox have played, we're still only 4 games back in the division. Of course, the same can be said for the Twins, who's starting pitching has been awful so far yet they are just 3.5 back. That's not going to stick around for the rest of the season, especially if Swarzak finds himself in the rotation for good after a couple of solid starts. I wish the Sox had this opinion. I hope when the go up to Minnesota this year they have the attitude that they are going to kick their ass, not tipping their cap to everything Twins like the last few years, and waiting for something to go wrong.
  8. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 11:49 AM) Where did you find that? Not something I am happy to see. Wiki. I remember he was accused up rape. I just figured since he was playing it must have been a false charge, but obviously if he pled, you have to believe something went down that shouldn't have.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 11:20 AM) http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...rtnerId=rss_cws With all the games without a day off including a DH, it was imperative KW get a guy who could contribute offensively as a back-up C ASAP. Not having to give up much and not having to pick up money was a great move. My only questions about him are injuries and this: Castro is married with three children, and resides in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. In November 2004 he was charged for a rape that allegedly occurred in a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania hotel room on August 28, 2003. On November 29, he pleaded no-contest to reduced misdemeanor indecent assault charges and was sentenced to a year of probation.
  10. QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ May 30, 2009 -> 09:59 PM) Oh, please. That's all hearsay. And highly likely BULLs*** at that. I'm convinced that just about every program cheats. If you're not cheating, you're not trying. And then there's this: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/c...0,7230960.story Do you honestly believe that the same NEVER happens for athletes at illinois??? C'mon now... I agree. The same Bruce Weber who kept a kid who committed a felony and almost killed a teammate not only on the team, but on scholarship, wouldn't be above playing the game IMO, and even if he doesn't, it doesn't mean there isn't a booster or 20 stuffing Illini baskeball players' pockets with cash and other perks.
  11. QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 01:07 AM) Give Thome some days off to rest his feet, perhaps put Dye at DH and let Brian play RF, Pods CF, CQ LF (I say Pods over Brian in CF, because as we've seen Carlos hasn't played RF since he was with the Dbacks, and I don't think they're going to mess around with that right now, and I don't think Pods has played RF for us, ever) You could also DH Carlos and have an OF of Pods/BA/Dye, both options give Jim some rest IIRC, the Sox have 9 games in a row in NL parks starting after this homestand. Thome will get plenty of rest. BTW doesn't it make more sense for interleague games since they always are 3 game series to have 2 games using one league's rules and 1 game using the other league's rules depending on the home team instead of always using the home team rules?
  12. QUOTE (jimmiething @ May 31, 2009 -> 05:21 PM) Ok first time posting but anyways I think it would be very very bad for the sox to have to call up Beckham to play third base this season. There is now way The Cuban Pimp is ready for the big leagues and in my mind I don't think there is any doubt that Beckham could hold his own right now in the big leagues. That being said, the reason Beckham is so highly reguarded as a prospect is he is such a good hitter for a middle infielder. Now if he plays a good 3rd base and hits how people project him to hit he will be a nice player but by no means a superstar. Going along with this,if Josh loses the job to Beckham, Fields becomes virtually useless to us in trades in that his trade value really has never been as low as it is now. So best case scenario for me, Gordon continues to succeed in the minor leagues and Josh keeps hitting the ball like he has over these past few days. Next year we can hopefully trade Getz of Fields for a good major league ready pitcher or outfield and have Beckham step in and be the savior all of the southside expects him to be. Ryne Sandburg was a 3B when he came up. So was Cal Ripken. Not to say Beckham is going to be a HOFer (hopefully) but if he plays 3B a couple of months in 2008, it won't make him a 3B for the rest of his career. Chances are Fields and/or Getz trade value isn't going to be too affected by a couple of months of performance unless its absolutly dominating, and if that happened the Sox would probably want to keep them. I think Beckham is just wasting time in AAA. If Fields builds on his recent success and starts hitting for power, he'll be at third. If he falters, Beckham's coming.
  13. Consdering any team in baseball could have had him for nothing when the Sox sent him down, I would say he has no trade value unless you want to pick up most of the money left in his contract, and even then you wouldn't get a player who could help you. The best-case scenerio is for Jose to get his feel back and pitch for the White Sox.
  14. QUOTE (dasox24 @ May 30, 2009 -> 12:32 PM) That's a bad example. Look at all the other teams that passed on Ellsbury and Garza too. There's a reason they fell to the late 1st round. So, I guess the Yankees, Padres, Rangers, Cubs, A's, Marlins, and Astros all suck at drafting too b/c they passed on at least 1 of the players you put in bold. In a way I agree with you, but it does proof that the crying there is nothing available when the Sox draft players is bunk. As I posted a few days ago, Hunter Pence was a second round pick in 2004. The Sox picked 5 players before he went off the board. Getting anything for Broadway is genius, and ridding yourself of having Corky Miller on the major league roster and not actually having to dole out cash is even better. The only question mark is Cqwtro's ability to stay healthy. He's a good hitter for a C.

  16. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 29, 2009 -> 01:00 PM) Meh obviously it was wrong. But it's like... so? And? What's going to happen, the NBA is supposed to suspend Rose or something? No, but Rose at the very least should pay back all the money he was given and the value of his scholarship with interest. The fact is no matter what happens to Memphis or Calipari or Rose, this stuff isn't going to stop, so they should stop the sham and pay them and give them an option of not having to be students.
  17. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 29, 2009 -> 12:11 PM) We have ALOT of lefty bats on this team right now. Calling Wise a bat is stretching it. Once I saw Wise had a double in Charlotte, I figured this was going to happen.
  18. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 29, 2009 -> 12:51 PM) I just don't have the time or energy to summon this well of phony self-righteous indignation when I hear of athletes doing unethical things. It's too common for me to give a s***. Call me when one of them commits a crime or hurts somebody else or does something otherwise has an obvious negative effect, then I'll care. Hell, I posted an article this morning about an NBA player saving this woman from drowning and nobody responded (yet), but people are on here blasting Rose because someone changed a D to a C... what's that say? As far as I know, Rose had nothing to do with that. He did have someone take the SAT for him, and if he's not bright enough to know that's wrong, he's not bright enough to attend college. I'm all for my alma mater (Iowa) winning, but I don't think it should be at any cost. When all the football players kept getting arrested, it was embarrassing. Putting up with Pierre Pierce because he might help you get into the tournament was embarrassing. When I was there and the wrestling team was winning NCAA title after title, being at party after party these guys showed up at and started fights every single time made me wonder if it was really worth having these morons on campus. College isn't for everyone. Just because you're exceptional at something athletically shouldn't make everyone ignore everything else.
  19. QUOTE (Texsox @ May 29, 2009 -> 12:16 PM) Why even give these guys grades then? Calling all of these players student-athletes is a sham. I think in a way it degrades everyone's degree from that institution. They should pay these guys and the guys that really aren't there to go to class and get an education, put them in a separate group. Give each school a few spots a year for hired guns. Guys that are there to just play sports. Derrick Rose went to Memphis one semester. he dropped out after the tournament in 2008. They go through all this trouble just for that. Same with OJ Mayo.
  20. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 29, 2009 -> 11:49 AM) This also shows how Illinois had no chance at Rose...ever. Weber was not going to give a kid's brother some money and deal with all his shenanigans. There's probably some shenanigans involved at just about every school, Illinois included. What has been discovered about Rose at Memphis is most likely the tip of the iceberg. If the only things illegal were a grade change, someone taking his SAT and $2600 for his brother, Memphis actually must be fairly clean.
  21. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 29, 2009 -> 11:00 AM) So take away both of their abilities to compete in amateur sports. Done. Cal cant coach in college anymore, Derrick cant play in college anymore. Calipari hasn't been coaching amateurs since he left UMass.
  22. The big sham is that Rose went to college in the first place. There's no excuse for his cheating. It shows a lack of character IMO. The grade change he might have had nothing to do with. A fill in for his SAT, that's a problem with me.
  23. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ May 29, 2009 -> 09:58 AM) How has the name Hunter Pence not come up? Wanna rebuild a farm system..... Hunter Pence was selected in the second round of the 2004 draft. The White Sox had 5 of the first 60 picks. They picked Fields, Lunsden, Gio, Whisler and Lucy before Houston selected Pence. Its one of the reasons while I don't get excited late first round and second round compensation picks.
