TRADE THREAD II ~ July 2 - July 8
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 2, 2005 -> 12:19 PM) [/b] That's the thing. The guy is like 35-40 years old and has been pitching since he was probably 14. He's not learning anything else. This is the pitcher that Jose Contreras is, but he's actually more of a thrower. He has no idea how to pitch and he's too pig-headed or scared to listen to the catcher. The thing that scares me is that I don't trust him or McCarthy now. I really feel like we need another starter. I think Contreras can change. He did change this year until the last 4 starts. Ozzie said in the paper today that they let him go back to doing things his way. Hopefully, it won't take too many more of these types of outings for him to see his way isn't going to work. He definitely seems afraid of guys making contact, hence the walks and the wild pitches.

White Sox at A's 7/2 Gamethread
QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 2, 2005 -> 11:19 AM) Yeah, all he had to do was get close to the strike zone on that 2nd batter, and he didn't. Further, had he done his job there, Ozzie could have let him pitch another inning to save the bullpen a bit. Instead, he used everyone but Hermanson and Politte. They don't have anyone else in the minors any better (lefthanded), so unless they bring someone in they are stuck with Walker until Marte comes back. I'd rather have a better RHP pitch to a LH batter than Walker. No offense to the guy, he's probably a very pleasant person but I don't see what he brings to the table as far as contributing to winning is concerned.

TRADE THREAD II ~ July 2 - July 8
Contreras may be the most frustrating pitcher the White Sox have ever had. If the guy had Roger Clemens' demeanor he would be a Cy Young candidate every season. I think its too soon to pull the plug on this guy. Next time out he may pitch a 2 hitter, and make everyone look foolish at the plate. Eventually, one of these outings has to make a difference in his mind. Someday he is going to realize guys can hit the ball and still make an out. As awful as he was last night, and he was awful, if Walker gets the guy out instead of walking him, Contreras only gives up 2 runs.

Maggs Gets First Tigers Hit
QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Jul 2, 2005 -> 10:09 AM) ur talkin about 1 day.... in 1 day he decided he was ready to play? I dont buy it. He skipped out on playing the Whitesox cause he was worried about not being ontop of his game. Thats the bottom line. He was DHing until Thursday, the last day the White Sox were in town. He played the outfield then drove to Detroit and told Trammell he was fine, and he was placed in the line-up. He's coming off hernia surgery, back a lot sooner than most of this board said he would. According to most here, he will never be at the top of his game. Your theory is silly. He played 3 or 4 games in his rehab. If you start your rehab on Monday and are supposed to be ready to play MLB by Thursday, what took Frank so long? Why isn't Gload with the Sox?

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Jul 2, 2005 -> 09:39 AM) http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2005/07/02...27_227_1_05.txt Padres trade May/Redding to Yanks for Quantrill. I remember when SD got May from KC. The ESPN "experts" were going crazy saying what a solid pick up he was. He sucked in KC, he sucked in SD and he'll suck in NY.

Maggs Gets First Tigers Hit
QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Jul 2, 2005 -> 07:01 AM) If Maggs was ready to play 1 day after his former team left town... what kept him from playing in that finale on Thursday... wow what a pussbag. The guy started his rehab assignment on Monday. He didn't even play the OF until Thursday. He wasn't supposed to play until next week. I highly doubt he is so afraid to play the White Sox he delayed his return to face Randy Johnson.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 11:01 PM) I agree. Everyone talks about getting a stud SP, or that guy at the back of the bullpen -- what about an upgrade at 3B? I realize you're gonna lose a little defense if you trade for someone, but we gotta get more production out of the offense. It simply isn't that great -- adding a bat like Aubrey Huff would do a lot, IMO. But that's not for this thread, so I won't talk a whole lot about it. Huff's average isn't much better than Crede's and he's only hit 6 homers. I like him, but I heard a scout talking about him on the radio, and they said he isn't the hitter he was a couple of years ago. His bat has supposedly slowed considerably. He may be a right handed Ben Grieve.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 10:59 PM) We had our chance to make Harden only go 5 innings tonight after the first inning, but our hitters seemed to get less patient as the game went on. The biggest problem with the bottom of our order is their inability to draw a walk. Exactly. Moneyball means 100 pitches and you're done. The patient approach worked great the first inning, and then it was forgotten.

Sox @ A's 7/1 Game Thread 9:05CT
A couple positives in this game, Vizcaino was effective again, and Shingo has been pretty good as well. If Marte comes back healthy, the bullpen should be as good as any in baseball.

Sox @ A's 7/1 Game Thread 9:05CT
As bad as Contreras was, the Sox aren't going to win many games scoring 2 runs. After the first inning, I don't understand the offensive approach. It seemed like no one really had a plan at the plate. And Kendall's thrown out 7 of 61 coming in. Except for Konerko and AJ, if anyone else gets on first, they should have been going. Maybe the'll do the unimaginable and score a few of Street in the 9th.

Look who's playing RF for the Tigers tonight
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 06:49 PM) The Yankees are now losing 10-2 in the 6th. Randy Johnson gave up 7 of the runs, all earned. I don't know why people are scared to play these guys in August. They're a bad team this year, that's all there is to it. And old players don't get better as the year goes. We'll destroy them. I thought they were old last year, but they do have some pros. I wish the Sox played them now. They really can't get any worse than they have been playing. I agree that they may not be the dominating team many experts predicted they would be, but chances are they will be playing better baseball in August. They probably will have another hot streak or two. Didn't they win 16 of 18 at one point? I suppose it could happen again.

Kenny Rogers sends cameraman to the hospital
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 03:06 PM) I don't disagree that he's trying to get money out of it, but if you were injured by a multi-millionaire on camera, would you sit on your ass and not complain? And secondly, pushing a 30 pound camera off of someone's shoulder, someone who already had preexisiting back and neck conditions, is actually enough to hurt them. It's not life threatening, but that doesn't mean Rogers' actions weren't illegal, and that doesn't mean he shouldn't have to pay up for them. Did you see the footage of this guy after Rogers went after him? He was getting ready to leave, you couldn't tell that he needed any medical assistance, and he winked at someone with a little smile. Next thing you know he's in an ambulance. I think Rogers got what he deserved as far as a suspension goes, and I think he should be ineligible for the All Star Game, especially if he has a clause for a nice bonus being selected. But this cameraman is milking it, no doubt about it.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 02:09 PM) Ozzie has seemed to abandon small ball, we've been station to station for to long now, he needs to get these guys in motion right now, with the offense struggling he needs to make something happen. I agree, but you have to get someone on base to put them in motion.

Marte to the DL
QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 11:09 AM) Rooney and Farmer are saying that Marte was put on the DL likely as a precautionary move so he can maximize his days of rest with the All-Star break coming up. They said that Kenny is probably worried more than anyone else. In one of the papers today, it said Marte was in Chicago yesterday attending to a personal matter and he returned to Detroit during the game yesterday. I bet he was getting examined.
-
Marte to the DL
This Marte thing really concerns me. I mentioned when they were in Toronto he was shaking his arm after he threw in the bullpen. This injury he has now is probably related to that. Losing him would be a big blow.

Stanton and Quantrill
Considering the hatred for Luis Vizcaino, how could anyone want to add old pitchers with far worse numbers? If the Yankees are paying these guys almost $7 million combined and they now want to pay them not to pitch, I think it speaks volumes.
