Bernie Madoff gets 150 years
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 04:11 PM) Especially since he'll probably be staying at a country club type facility. Not likely. They had a story on NPR this morning. Your location is based on "points," age, health, type of crime, etc. but also sentence length. His 150 year sentence wipes out all of those. It seems the best he can hope for is medium-security some time down the road. He might end up in solitary at a Super Max. for his own safety. This won't be an easy sentence for him. edit: here's a link http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.p...oryId=106193972

What sort of influence does the makeup of Congress have on the CBO? I know its ideally completely non-partisan, but... edit: typo

The Democrat Thread
Probably just any number of "experts" who do nothing but give opinions on TV shows. It was a while ago, but someone here (Balta?) posted some interesting stuff on that. There's even seminars you can take to be a pundit without any real expertise or knowledge. edit: what Balta said. Seems weird for him to say that, as everything on his wiki page indicates that he's left-of-center and not exactly a booga booga guy. I'd like some more context for that quote, but then I'd have to watch Glenn Beck.

The environment thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 10:50 AM) Clue One that the article is disingenuine, and engineered to make people believe something that isn't true. PHILOSOPHY DERAIL I think it goes deeper than that. It goes to an epistemological level. A study says "this is so" or an expert says "this is so", therefore it is so. But, as you know, that's not how scientific knowledge operates. Relativity isn't correct because Einstein said so but because his data and methods said so. The weight of his statements comes from the evidence, not from his name. However, I don't think that's how a lot of people operate--reliance on some authority to dictate what is true makes it true, so they don't even see the problem of saying "Study X says Y is so" without at least providing the study. The study said it, they agree with the conclusions (a priori, of course), therefore its fact. This view is just my own poorly thought out philosophy. /PHILOSOPHY DERAIL

The environment thread
I'd honestly like to read or at least skim whatever study this is if its freely available. The excellent journalists at WND can't be bothered with a cite, though.
-
The environment thread
Please stop relying on anything printed by WND for pretty much any information, but especially anything environmental. The "Maine study" isn't cited or even really named. There's not that much involved in cleaning it up. There's no reason to seal off a bedroom permanently because of one broken bulb. Perhaps she was given bad advice and an exaggerated quote. The rest of the article just reads like polemics against CFL's, which is no surprise because WND prints nothing but polemics.

The environment thread
There's not that much mercury in a CFL. It's something on the order of a few mg. Less than an older thermometer. http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/cfl.asp

We need a devastating attack on this country in order for us to start protecting ourselves from a devastating attack. Scheuer just deployed a major weapon against the logic center of my brain.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 09:16 AM) Like I said... and like SS keeps trying to say - we're being forced into an artificial demand. That doesn't work well. On the other side of the argument, you can say that the cost of any sort of carbon energy and the amount of disposable, throw-away goods we consume are artificially priced low because their true environmental impact isn't captured in the price.

Why this team COULD NOT and now WILL make playoffs
I'm worried about the very rough stretches of the schedule coming up in the second half. There's some brutal back-to-back-to-back-to-back series in there. What I don't know is how the rest of Detriot's and Minnesota's season looks. Have they already played through the easy part of their schedule like the Sox have?

Teaching Certificate
QUOTE (SnB @ Jun 16, 2009 -> 08:36 PM) so quick question. Are there programs that just give the certificate? I was under the impression you either have to get another bachelors or get a masters. Sorry I wasn't clear up thread. Aurora has this program for high school or junior high certification.

I'm a homeowner!
Congrats! QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jun 30, 2009 -> 07:59 AM) Make sure you get the $7,500 tax credit. It comes out of 15 tax returns in equal payments starting in two years. I thought the new one that's $8000 doesn't have to be paid back?

Piniella comments on Sox attendance
QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 05:40 PM) Gary Steelheads I drove by their brand new (looking, anyway) stadium last summer. It's in a very depressing part of town. Joliet's stadium is nice. They have hot tub seats. I was at the Flyers game once and it was okay. Nothing too special. edit: I think the Jackhammers offered Frank Thomas a contract last year when he was cut by the Blue Jays. Anyone know how much these players usually make?

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 01:37 PM) I don't think anyone says anything about climate change being a myth. There's plenty of people who still call it a myth or a hoax.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 27, 2009 -> 05:30 PM) Unfortunately, we've been saying this quite often for a while now. No. I am the first poster to realize that Quentin is a good player and a valuable asset. Where was that pitching last inning, DJ?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 27, 2009 -> 05:27 PM) Ok, I really miss Quentin right now. This team would be orders of magnitudes better with a healthy Quentin.
