  10. Update on Morongate: Tillerson didn't actually deny calling Trump a moron; NBC's reporter says their source actually said he called Trump a "f***ing Moron;" CNN has verified the story. lol
  11. I'm not sure how I feel about forced labor either way, but there are parts of our 'justice' system that are modern day slavery. Private prisons where inmates are forced to work for private, for-profit companies for pennies an hour at best. e: those jobs should done by paid employees imo, would help more people than forcing prison labor to do it!
  12. Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr. Were Close to Being Charged With Felony Fraud New York prosecutors were preparing a case. Then the D.A. overruled his staff after a visit from a top donor: Trump attorney Marc Kasowitz. Goes into a lot of details about the history of the case, but basically Trump's family has always been skirting the law and they straight-up bribed a prosecutor to get out of felony charges.
  13. Exclusive: Russian-linked Facebook ads targeted Michigan and Wisconsin http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/03/politics/rus...nsin/index.html CNN)A number of Russian-linked Facebook ads specifically targeted Michigan and Wisconsin, two states crucial to Donald Trump's victory last November, according to four sources with direct knowledge of the situation. Some of the Russian ads appeared highly sophisticated in their targeting of key demographic groups in areas of the states that turned out to be pivotal, two of the sources said. The ads employed a series of divisive messages aimed at breaking through the clutter of campaign ads online, including promoting anti-Muslim messages, sources said. It has been unclear until now exactly which regions of the country were targeted by the ads. And while one source said that a large number of ads appeared in areas of the country that were not heavily contested in the elections, some clearly were geared at swaying public opinion in the most heavily contested battlegrounds.
  14. Latest info is that the gunman may have planned a similar attack in a chance the rapper and Lorde concert. Had 23 weapons in his room. ATF still examining weapons to determine what modifications, if any, were made.
  15. There was a major gerrymandering case involving WI at the Supreme Court today, and some court reporters think Kennedy's questions indicate he might vote to strike down partisan gerrymanders. That would have huge implications across the country and be a pretty solid improvement for our democracy. The gerrymandering in Wisconsin is so bad that Republicans got a 60-39 majority with 47% of the vote. Before Mitch McConnell caused a constitutional crisis and stole a supreme court seat, I was pretty hopeful we'd get some real, much needed electoral reform. Hopefully, Kennedy still makes that happen.
  16. QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:45 PM) yeah...those are called Slide Fires...and honestly I think they should be banned and I'm as pro gun as there is. Actually those Slide Fires are ridiculously hard to use...much less from that distance...so he sure must have done some real practice. I've shot them a handful of times and quite honestly think they're idiotic and very hard to control. But besides his Slid Fire...if he had modified semi autos to fire fully auto...he's no longer a law-abiding citizen. This entire story seems extremely odd besides simply being tragic. I'm not one to ever just subscribe to Occam's Razor...but this entire event makes absolutely zero sense from so many angles to simply say "someone snapped". It really does no good going back and forth with these arguments because nothing short of complete banning and confiscation would satisfy the anti gun masses...and that's just plain not going to happen. I'm all for common sense gun laws...but not everyone is going to be happy. Has Illinois' ridiculously strict gun laws prevented gun violence?.... They are apparently pretty hard to control, but when you're firing into a huge crowd of 20k people and don't care who you're hitting, that's not really much of a problem. We'll see what the final details say, but the audio signatures of the gun fire show somewhat uneven but still very rapid fire. That would seem to indicate something like the technically legally bump fire stocks rather than an illegal actual full-auto modification. As long as he didn't actually modify the gun to fully automatic, he was 100% legal until he broke the window (minor property crime) and started firing. The amount of planning that went seems to have gone into this does rule out trying to label this as "someone snapped." This wasn't a heat of the moment thing.
  17. Exclusive: Jared Kushner's personal email moved to Trump Organization computers amid public scrutiny This means there are now White House records that have not been subject to a classification review sitting on Trump Org servers. Lock Them Up!
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:39 PM) If you are oblivious to the Democratic platform and its general direction, there is no point. They've shifted left, not radically left. If the Democrats start adopting DSA platform planks, then we can talk about a radical shift. Either way, how much they've shifted isn't relevant to whether or not Republican campaigns calling Obama and Kerry the most liberals to ever liberal in the history of liberalism caused that shift; same for the inverse and conservatives. If it gets you to address the core argument, fine, the Democrats are now a bunch of radical Marxists. Now explain how Republican political campaigns caused them to shift so far leftward. e: or don't because this is a dumb argument and you'll always find a way to blame Democrats/liberals for the actions of Republicans and conservatives
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:36 PM) You absolutely discredited yourself with the very first sentence. You could address the relevant argument rather than that tangent.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:27 PM) So it is all coincidence that one party has pushed radically left, but total logic that the other one has pushed radically right, even though the same political undercurrents exist for both. Sure, why not. If that is what it takes. Democrats haven't actually pushed radically left, though. Within western democracies, they'd be a center-right party at best. They nominated Hillary Clinton just last year, for christ's sake. Globally, Republicans are a substantial outlier ideologically. There's really not a comparable ideological distribution here. Really, though, whether Democrats have shifted radically left or not is beside the point. The problem is what you're ascribing that shift to. You're trying to blame Democrats for the radicalization of the right and for conservatives backing Donald Trump through the nomination and into the Presidency. Nobody is backing Trump because Democrats called Romney a conservative. Nobody on the left is backing Sanders or Warren or pushing for UHC and expansion of the social safety net because Republicans criticized Kerry or Obama. There are political (economic, religion and race really) undercurrents causing these shifts in the US and abroad, but that isn't what you're arguing. You're arguing that Demcoratic political campaigns against Romney 5 years ago and McCain 9 years ago caused that shift, which is just nonsense.
  21. QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:21 PM) Wait....what? Not sure what you're saying here...that it's ok to buy huge numbers of semi automatic ARs or AKs (that can be converted)? Actually it's illegal to convert a semi automatic rifle to fire fully auto...the part is actually illegal from what I understand. I'm not sure what you mean by saying it's legal to buy "after market modified assault rifles fully rigged for fully automatic firing". That is completely false. You can purchase fully automatic weapons legally...but you have to have a Class III license that goes thru the ATF and they must be registered and have paperwork with them at all times. It's costly...and a ton of red tape...and most of the time you have to have a FFL license. And actually They changed the law probably 5 or 6 years ago that stated that if anyone tried to buy 2 or more weapons at one time it's automatically reported to the ATF. There are laws in place that flag large and oft purchasers. He had one of the bump fire shoulder stocks that allowed him to fire at a very high rate with a gun that was technically still a semi-automatic and 100% a-okay with the ATF. Up until he broke that window, he had broken no laws by amassing 20+ rifles with optics and large capacity magazines in a hotel room overlooking 20,000 people. In the handful of minutes after his first illegal act, he was able to fire over a thousand rounds on the crowd, killing 59 and wounding over 500. Right up until that point, he was a law-abiding citizen, one of the Good Guys With A Gun. I'm not even particularly pro-gun control, but the pro-gun crowd should recognize that this situation was sort of the absolute worst as far as the hypotheticals from gun control proponents goes. There's nothing in place to stop what this man did before he did it, and there's nothing stopping someone else from amassing similar completely legal firepower today.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:09 PM) Yeah it isn't like a socialist almost won their nomination or something... Sanders is a New Deal democrat to the (slight) right of most mainstream European parties, and he lost by a few million votes. People who did back Sanders, myself included, didn't do it because Republicans called John Kerry and Barrack Obama extremist liberals. I honestly don't know what sort of mechanism for that happening you're envisioning. edit: Actually, mentioning Europe makes me think it's worthwhile to point out the shifts that are occurring throughout western democracies right now. People aren't voting for right wing nationalism in Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, etc. because Democrats called Mitt Romney a conservative. There are uniquely American aspects to Trump and his rise for sure, but he's also part of a global shift.
