QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:54 PM) Well i'm sorry, you have no facts, so creationism and evolutionary thought are apparently on equal footing. No facts = no belief. Right Soxbadger? I missed this the first time around. You've made this convolution before. Cosmology (big bang) and biology (evolution) are not the same thing. Even the start of life (abiogenesis) isn't the same thing as evolution. So, no, not on equal footing. We have good evidence for the Big Bang, essentially indisputable evidence for evolution and some good working theories on abiogenesis. None of those things categorically declares "there is no god" or makes a claim on any sort of prime-mover or what came before the Big Bang. Young Earth Creationism is a silly belief that was discarded by Christian scientists who actually were curious about this stuff about two centuries ago (Lyell and Darwin). YEC makes certain predictions that can be tested, and it fails every single time. The same thing happens to actual scientific ideas like the aether theory of EM propagation.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:12 PM) For example, Many people believe that women are subservient to men due to religion. If you are going to try and argue for a woman's equality, you cant just pull out a chapter from the New Testament to support you. Thus if they keep relying on it, you just have to attack the New Testament. I don't think this is correct. In my view, people interpret their religion through their own moral system more than the other way around, though there's obviously some interaction. The Bible was used to justify slavery and abolition, segregation and civil rights and just about any other social issue you can imagine (including feminism). People pick and choose which parts of religious holy books to follow based on external morals and then use religion to justify their moral claims, both good and bad. I was raised in a religious family, but we were never taught messages of intolerance that you may hear in fundamentalist churches. Both sides would probably argue that the other's interpretation of the religion is wrong, but it highlights the subjective nature of the whole thing.

The Democrat Thread
Ok, I guess I'll just say one last time that the article I linked is not anti-Christian at all unless you believe that being anti-gay is essential to Christianity (which I don't think you do)! It's actually pro-Christianity and laments church leaders' culture wars driving youth away from Christianity! edit: I'm also struggling to recall "unbridled hate" in the other thread but that could just be selective memory (happened in the Trayvon thread and when I read back over it saw what I believe you were alluding to). Except my unbridled hatred of PZ-type New Atheism. edit2: yeah, there's some posts in there that are pretty antagonistic, but they started in response to asking why people who don't believe in God don't go on raping sprees so...

The article is by a Christian who makes her living speaking and writing about Christianity. You have a pretty bizarre definition of "anti-Christian," but this sort of refusal to even address the problem that many people (even Christians!) have with anti-gay bigotry is definitely part of the problem. Do you perceive "non-Christian" as "anti-Christian?"

QUOTE (Heads22 @ May 10, 2012 -> 09:55 PM) Just finished Manhunt by Peter Bergen about the hunt for Bin Laden. It's a nice engaging read. He was just on The Daily Show a last week. It looked really interesting.

The change in the perception of Jamie's character from early on in book 1 through the rest of the series is one of the best parts. Especially when you learn about his time in Kings Landing with Aerys and why he did some of the things he did.

You can't play the persecuted minority card when these negative attitudes towards Christianity seem to be largely based on rejection of Christianity being used to persecute minorities. It's a study by a pro-Christian group trying to gather information on various demographics' views of Christianity. The data is what it is. It was only a week or two ago that I posted a thread with an lengthy article on the misogyny rampant in many Muslim cultures, and they are certainly no better on the LGBT front than conservative Christianity. Did you actually read the link? It's not very long and it explains (anecdotally) why many Christian youth are ultimately leaving their church over this issue.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 11, 2012 -> 08:25 AM) And you wonder why people feel there is ant-Christian sentiment out there? I think you have the cause and effect backwards here. Please note that the article I linked to is by a liberal Christian and that the group that performed the survey is a pro-Christian group.

So this could go in this thread or the baby pills thread I guess, but it's a post on a recent survey by the Barna Group, a pro-Christian research firm: The face of Christianity among American youth is bigotry.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 10, 2012 -> 09:53 PM) When I read your posts I can just see the anger and fear. It seems like you are just so worried that Obama is going to out raise Romney and win. Because last I checked politics is about winning, not about being righteously principled while the other side stomps you out. It must really burn to watch this go down. This is why Republicans who aren't anti-ssm are reacting this way.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 10, 2012 -> 09:38 PM) Where was your all out praise and admiration for Dick Cheney when he said almost EXACTLY the same thing 3 years ago? Where was the evolutionary thinking back then? I didn't think so. And that man actually has real skin in the game, unlike the dorkass "most powerful man in the world" in the choose a topic du jour to spout bulls*** about for more campaign money. It's really funny that none of you can see that. Dick Cheney wasn't potus. You know this, but your Obama rage is blinding you.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 10, 2012 -> 06:01 PM) I don't know your point. A Christian, or I should say a good Christian IS supposed to act that well as well as a good human being. Are you taking issue with my statement? His point is that while it may be a "Christian" thing to do, it is more broadly a "good person" thing to do. Categorizing a good act as a Christian act comes with all sorts of implications, like implying that a non-Christian wouldn't act that way. I don't think that was your intention, but that's exactly the sort of thing people mean when they talk about cultural privileges; base assumptions in a given society that have the effect of conferring an advantage to a majority group. "Jump the shark" means become ridiculous or a self-parody, not that it's not popular. The Simpsons "jumped the shark" over a decade ago yet still has decent ratings to my knowledge.- The Democrat Thread

QUOTE (farmteam @ May 10, 2012 -> 04:48 PM) That is rather interesting. Jewish law has some interesting rules regarding loans/debts -- basically that you have an obligation to help people in need, but those people then have an obligation to pay it back. Their big on reciprocity of rights/obligations if I remember correctly. That's what he gets into in that section, that saying "thank you" has an underlying assumption that you are now in this person's debt for having given you a gift. This sort of calculating and coming up with equivalent values for things is the foundation of debt, which is more than just bank loans and usury. It's a pretty interesting book thus far.- Buying a New Desktop computer
Running chips at higher speeds increases the thermal loading (heat). If your system currently has excess cooling capacity, you shouldn't even notice a temp increase, but your fans will be running more. Generally, though, you can expect case temps to be a little higher. This does reduce the longevity of components in the case, but a few degrees shouldn't matter too much. edit: this is if you're just adjusting multipliers and clock speed, which is the easy way to do it. If you start getting into messing with voltages, you can easily fry your chip. - Ground Up Human Baby Pills
