  1. I like the trade. If Ted Lilly is gonna get $10 million on the open market, what would Freddy have netted? Would've been nice to get another pick, but if Floyd's problem was control, we have seen what Coop did with Contreras & Thornton. Not saying he'll be able to do it with Floyd, but if he can, this could be a steal. It could be like the Ritchie trade from 2001, except this time the Sox benefit from the 2 young arms.
  2. APNewsBreak: Fox Fires Lyons for Comment By JANIE McCAULEY, AP Sports Writer 48 minutes ago DETROIT - Fox baseball broadcaster Steve Lyons has been fired for making a racially insensitive comment directed at colleague Lou Piniella's Hispanic heritage on the air during Game 3 of the American League championship series. The network confirmed Saturday that Lyons was dismissed after Friday's comments. He has been replaced for the remainder of the series by Los Angeles Angels announcer Jose Mota. "Steve Lyons has been relieved of his Fox Sports duties for making comments on air that the company found inappropriate," network spokesman Dan Bell said. Lyons had been working in the booth for the ALCS alongside Thom Brennaman and Piniella. A call to Lyons' cell phone was not immediately returned Saturday. In the second inning of Friday's game between Detroit and Oakland, Piniella talked about the success light-hitting A's infielder Marco Scutaro had in the first round of the playoffs. Piniella said that slugger Frank Thomas and Eric Chavez needed to contribute, comparing Scutaro's production to finding a "wallet on Friday" and hoping it happened again the next week. Later, Piniella said the A's needed Thomas to get "en fuego" _ hot in Spanish _ because he was currently "frio" _ or cold. After Brennaman praised Piniella for being bilingual, Lyons spoke up. Lyons said that Piniella was "hablaing Espanol" _ butchering the conjugation for the word "to speak" _ and added, "I still can't find my wallet." "I don't understand him, and I don't want to sit too close to him now," Lyons continued. Fox executives told Lyons after the game he had been fired. Piniella, approached before Saturday's Game 4, declined to comment on the situation except to say: "No, he's not here today." This was not a first-time offense for Lyons, nicknamed "Psycho" during his nine-year big league career as a utilityman that ended in 1993 with the Boston Red Sox. Hired when Fox began broadcasting baseball in 1996, Lyons was suspended without pay in late September 2004 after his remarks about Shawn Green of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Green is Jewish and elected not to play one of the two games at San Francisco that took place during the Yom Kippur holiday. The network apologized for Lyons' remarks at the time. Lyons, 46, was a career .252 hitter with 19 home runs and 196 RBIs for Boston, the Chicago White Sox, Atlanta and Montreal. He was a first-round draft pick by the Red Sox, 19th overall, in 1981. ___ AP Baseball Writer Ben Walker contributed to this story. Copyright 2006 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. 3. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Sep 24, 2006 -> 10:30 PM) Wow. This is getting ridiculous. Baseball is a daily grind. Some of the crap people say is just so moronic that it's unbelievable. You must not have ever played baseball because anyone with a grain of knowledge know's that these guy's play tired all the time. Just because they get paid a lot doesn't make it an easy sport to play. These guys are thinking baseball 24/7. DO NOT tell me, or anyone else, that they're not tired, because they're not, they're exhausted. There is more to baseball than a 9 inning game every day. They wake up early, get to the park, and work. They get a couple days off every month, but no, they're not tired. What puzzles ME is how people can be so idiotic. Last year brought out the best in Sox fans. This year brought out the worst in Sox fans, especially some on this board.
  4. QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Sep 7, 2006 -> 11:10 PM) I didn't think he said anything bad there. I said last night's game vs. Boston was a total repeat of the series finale against Minnesota. We played awesome that game but it didn't carry over to the rest of the games that week. And with a screenname of SinkingShip06, that's gonna elicit alot of positive vibes.
  5. So why bring it up now? He threw Tracey under the bus, and I initially dismissed it as Ozzie being Ozzie. Then, he reamed Garland out during a game where he was absolutely dealing for no other good reason than for not hitting someone in retaliation. Now he throws BA under the bus, when the guy has done nothing but improve on his game over the 2nd half of this year while still playing at a high level in centerfield. The preference for veterans, and overplaying his bench. Leaving younger players on the bench and not giving them a full opportunity. Leaving starters in way too long and bringing in certain members of the pen at questionable times. The more of Ozzie I see, the more I'm seeing him morph into Dusty Baker overnight. What a difference a year makes.
  6. The Score is reporting that the Sox sent Jenks back to Chicago with some form of hip injury. McDougal's taking over the closer role for now. Guess that could possibly explain yesterday.
  7. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 3, 2006 -> 09:50 AM) I guess you missed the post about punching Javy in the face before it got deleted, huh? I know the WSI and thread police have been having a field day about what is and isn't done here, but in general, just because the mods and admins here don't make a dog and pony show about showing off everytime we do something, doesn't mean there isn't a rhyme or reason to what is being done. The very fact that this stuff gets talked about in public and not deleted should be proof enough of our intents here. If we were looking to blow sunshine up everyone's butts, questions like this would be deleted and told to use PMs or emails to address their concerns. And please don't give me the crap about postive threads being "heralded" here. They might get a few happy posts, but right as rain, you will get the people who feel that they have to crap on anything positive that gets said here. I am sick of people thinking just because they will call out people, it makes them somekind of superfan who is better than everyone else who doesn't dwell on the negatives. Plus I always hear about how Sox fans will talk about the negative so it makes them better than Cub fans... Have you listened to Cub fans the last few years? They have been more negative than just about anyone as far as I have heard, I guess that makes them great fans then? What separates good Sox fans from Cub fans is the depth of their converstations and baseball knowledge. If you switched all of the "Guillen"'s to "Baker"'s and Vazquez/Garcia"'s to "Prior/Wood"s and you might think you were at NSBB somedays.
  8. If they could survive a 13 1/2 game swing over 2 months in 2005, they can survive a 1-5 slump vs the AL East. All the way in.

I missed out last year. Won't make the same mistake twice.
  10. Just in time for the White Sox. I hope the Sox sweep the Cubs and Barrett goes hitless the entire series.
  11. QUOTE(thedoctor @ Jun 4, 2006 -> 08:48 PM) color me a homer, but i still like what i've seen this year out of this team. frankly amazes me that people have s***pants over the recent rough stretch. it probably shouldn't amaze me, but i guess people thought we were just going to kick-ass from beginning to end. sorry, that doesn't happen. this team will be fine.
  12. Yesterday, the ball that Sizemore hit that turned into a triple is the exact reason Brian needs to be out there. I'm not sure if Brian would've caught it, but I don't think Sizemore gets a triple out of it either. I would be more concerned if Anderson was a good field, no-hit type of player in the minors, but he showed he could hit at all levels. I'm pretty sure that will come along in due time.
  13. His scheduled return date to the 'Stros is June 22. And if I'm not mistaken, the week after that, Houston comes to the Cell. Possible Game 1 rematch?
  14. No one has been recalled yet, but I guess all signs would point to Jeff Nelson.
  15. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 17, 2006 -> 02:34 PM) Hawk and DJ do the game Friday, it's a Fox National TV game Saturday, Kasper and Brenly do the game Sunday. Also, my guess is the Saturday game on Fox National will be Josh Lewin and DJ, if the past is an indication. The Saturday Fox game will be handled by Thom Brennamen & Lou Piniella.
  16. I think Dye's arm is a little stronger than Mags, but I thought Mags defense improved year after year.
  17. From the Sun-Times: Free-spirit Pierzynski can handle his boos April 29, 2006 BY JOE COWLEY Staff Reporter Advertisement ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The boos were numerous and loud Friday night. White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski wouldn't have wanted it any other way. It was Pierzynski who was the central figure in the controversial dropped third strike in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series last October, in which the Sox beat the Angels to reach the World Series. The catcher reached base in the ninth inning on Josh Paul's questionable dropped third strike. So when he was introduced before and during the game, Angels fans did their best to make their opinions of him well heard. ''A.J., because they boo A.J. everywhere,'' Sox manager Ozzie Guillen responded, when asked who would get the most boos over the weekend. ''Even in his backyard, his wife and kids boo him.'' The interesting matchup could come tonight, as Angels starter Kelvim Escobar is on the mound. Escobar was pitching in that Game 2 controversy last year. Then this spring, a teammate put a Pierzynski baseball card on Escobar's locker as a joke, leading to Escobar telling reporters about his dislike for the Sox catcher. But the right-handed Escobar was saying all the right things leading up to tonight's meeting with Pierzynski. ''I'm going to go out there and pitch my game and do my thing,'' Escobar told Angels reporters. ''Like I said, whatever happened last year is last year. ''That was last year. There was a lot of pressure in those games and a little thing can become a big issue. The thing is, it's a new year. For me it's over. It's a new year, and we're looking to do our thing.'' FEELING GOOD: Scheduled Sunday starter Jon Garland said he did go through a dead-arm period to start the year, but his right arm feels as strong as ever now. Coincidentally, it was his worst start of the season in which his arm snapped out of it. In an April 13 start in Detroit, Garland allowed seven runs on 13 hits but said that had nothing to do with a dead arm. ''My arm felt good, and I just tried to over do it,'' Garland said. ''Instead of concentrating on making good pitches, I was thinking about how good my arm felt, and I got beat down.'' A dead-arm period is nothing new for Garland, and he said it usually happens twice a year. ''I'm sure it will come around again this year,'' he added. ''It usually does, but you have to just battle through it.'' SAYING GOODBYE: Guillen was informed of former major-league pitcher Steve Howe dying in a car accident Friday morning and called it ''sad.'' ''It shows you how good of a pitcher he was,'' Guillen said of Howe. ''He got in all that trouble, but baseball kept bringing him back.''
  18. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Apr 24, 2006 -> 07:59 AM) Josh Barfield is Venezuelan. Acutally, he's Venezuelan & American. I read an article saying he was born there while his father was playing winter ball, and was only there a couple of weeks. He grew up in Texas.
  19. From AP.com: Posted on Sun, Apr. 23, 2006 Mariners designate OF Joe Borchard Associated Press SEATTLE - The Seattle Mariners designated outfielder Joe Borchard for assignment and recalled pitcher Clint Nageotte from Triple-A Tacoma before Sunday's game with the Detroit Tigers. Seattle has 10 days to trade, release or assign Borchard to the minor leagues. The 27-year-old former Chicago White Sox first-round draft pick appeared in only six of the Mariners' first 19 games, with two starts in center field. He was 2-for-9. Seattle had traded left-hander Matt Thornton, its 1998 first-round choice, to Chicago for Borchard on March 20. But Jeremy Reed has since recovered from a sprained wrist and re-established himself as the Mariners' regular center fielder. Plus, reserve outfielder Matt Lawton has returned from a 10-day suspension for testing positive for steroids. Nageotte, 25, made his major league debut with Seattle in 2004. He also pitched in three Mariners games last season and has a career record of 1-6 with a 7.30 ERA in 15 games, five starts. He was 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts with Tacoma this season.
  20. Wasn't Orton at the game last night? Nevermind, just saw the Orton thread.
  21. Isn't Tyler Lumsden a lefty as well?
