QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 04:16 PM) Hes lowering that hoop day one to practice dunking on all kids Damn right
-
QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 01:03 PM) So, how does this work as a yard for kids, again? Hah, I will admit this is definitely also for me, and even for the wife...particularly in the first few years. But even on day 1, we'll be able to use it as a play area for basically anything.

Chris Getz to take over player development

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 07:46 AM) Gabe Kapler retired in 2012. he coached one year in the WBC for Team Israel. 1 year later he became the Director of Player Development for the Dodgers without any experience. He's super into analytics and nutrition and converted all of the prospect meals into gluten free stuff. Maybe Chris Getz is similar to Kapler where he has an actual "player development plan" that delves into nutrition, analytics and other factors. We have no idea. But assuming it's a s***ty hire because it's the White Sox is incredibly short-sighted and it's honestly b****ing just to b****. And if the White Sox had the development in their system that the Dodgers have had over the past 10-15 years, I probably wouldn't have questioned the hire. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 11:48 AM) If Boston isn't willing to move their top guys, then yes, the other teams could be able to put packages together that beat the Red Sox offer. But while those packages may beat the Red Sox offer, they likely won't rise to the level required for us to make the deal.

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 11:40 AM) Fast forward to trade deadline 2017 "There will be better deals in offseason, nobody wants to unload major league talent in playoff push" Fast forward to offseason 2017 "I mean we have 3 of the best pitchers in the AL, and the jays said we could get 40 year old bautista at HALF PRICE for only Jose Guerroro JR and others" Fast forward to trade deadline 2018 "We can get better deals in offseason, let's just trade lawrie for some spects" I agree...this is never going to be an easy decision to make. However, the sooner we make the commitment to rebuilding, the more value we will likely get for our current assets.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 10:57 AM) Your wife is a smart lady I figured you'd like that Dialing in the final contractors outside of the scope of Sport Court, which will handle the court construction. The electrical work and the tree removal work are significant expenses. Chose the final court design last evening. Expecting tree removal to begin next week, then the concrete work. We may have a bit of a lull while we wait for the court materials, the basketball systems, the netting systems, the lighting systems, etc. to be shipped to the contractor. The week of Thanksgiving is still the target completion date.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 11:18 AM) Then the Sox walk away from the deal. If they aren't willing to pay up, there are better deals out there to be had. But really, are there? As much as we think we are holding the Red Sox over a barrel, I suspect they will have significant leverage as well. We may be able to drum up interest from others, but in reality, Boston is really the one team that holds the pieces that we might demand. Otherwise, it once again becomes an issue of prospect liquidity with other organizations. Sure, the Dodgers might have the pieces. Perhaps Texas and NY could put something together. The Cubs have the pieces but we aren't going to move Sale to the Northside absent some premium. Boston is really the team that has the pieces to make this happen and still not bankrupt their system.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 11:13 AM) I don't think JBJ would be the centerpiece. I think he is a piece. You have to get a guy like Moncada and a lot of others to make this work. See, that is where I think Boston will beg to differ. If he truly is a 5-6 WAR player, that sure sounds like the centerpiece to me.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 09:30 AM) The sad thing is that off of the top of my head, that is a probably a pretty nice improvement over what we put out there in CF all last year. And that is without factoring in anything on the defensive side of things. Even if he hits at his worst, JBJ would provide the Sox with a ton of improvement in CF. We are talking wins worth of improvement. If he hits even normal or better than normal? 5 wins? 6 wins? Yeah, I agree it is an improvement, but that isn't the question necessarily. The question is, do we believe JBJ is worth what Boston will think he's worth? The answer to that question will undoubtedly be "no," but really it will come down to how close are we in terms of those assessments. At the end of the day, the centerpiece in a Sale trade needs to be someone we are rock-solid confident in. For whatever reasons, perhaps irrational as they may be, I just don't have that sense of JBJ as the centerpiece. Maybe it's more that I would prefer to diversify the return amongst more prospects...which again, may be slightly irrational.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 09:21 AM) Realistically, no player is going to be perfectly consistent. There will be streaks and slumps that arrive at the season end numbers. Yeah, for sure...but he had a REALLY abnormal streak for about 30 games where he was just unconsious...I suspect that type of run might be an outlier even amongst typical hot streaks. For me, I would prefer more consistency. Edit: His Post-All-Star splits were .233/.315/.412/.728

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 06:40 AM) I had the same thought originally, but what if Kluber loses game 5? You can't start him on two days rest if you go to game 7. This way you have him available for games 4 and 7. Ideally, you only need him once and he will be fully rested for the World Series. Plus, your bullpen just pitched over 8 innings. You know Kluber should give you at least 6. The rookie could get rocked and then you have another bullpen day. I think this is the key. They have been relying heavily on their bullpen and Kluber will give them some certainty there.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 06:33 AM) I can get behind the control thing, it just seems like people think he's a bad player. He didn't, though. He went from a .355 wOBA to a .354. His K rate actually dropped significantly while his walk rate stayed essentially the same. His average and OBP rose. If anything, he provided evidence that his strong half season in 2015 wasn't a fluke. He went on a monster run at the beginning of the summer for about a month and then was pretty pedestrian from there on out. I'm not saying that shouldn't count, but the way his numbers fell out this season are not necessarily indicative of a guy that was steadily on base and knocking in runs all season long the way you might think.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 05:21 PM) Rotation is pretty brutal, and Rodriguez throws with his left hand. It's not brutal if Rodon and Rodriguez take the next step in their development. It's not Sale/Q/Rodon, but we all know where that plan got us.

Chris Getz to take over player development

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 02:58 PM) And until I mentioned him, you have never heard of him. I think your point is well-taken, but that doesn't excuse the point that they should strive to hire more-qualified candidates. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 02:40 PM) True, his .340 obp is a cushion. It's probably irrational, but if including JBJ means a more limited package i'm just nervous he becomes a high swing and miss player that resembles his rookie year more than the torrid stretch of 2015-first half 2016 +1

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:43 PM) http://m.mlb.com/news/article/161592224/in...elopment-staff/ http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2...omote_ross.html Carter Hawkins, eight years of experience, four years as assistant to Atkins, who was previously in charge of player development. Yet another with a better organization with EIGHT years of experience prior to assuming the responsibilities. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2014/5/21/5...ilb-adjustments http://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0SO8wvENQV...JSc5sl1PUQdhGo- Scott Sharp with the Royals had EIGHT years of experience in scouting with three different organizations. http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/team/fron...ice.jsp?c_id=kc Well, at least Getz wasn't at the very bottom of their front office pecking order. There's one below. http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/kc/team/e...dahia_chino.jsp And now we know why Getz wasn't in line for that position any time soon in KC. Someone with tons more experience in multiple organizations and bilingual to boot. I suspect there are folks in the Cardinals, Pirates, Cubs, Red Sox, etc. organizations that had similar amounts of experience. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 11:37 AM) I call BS. While the player development has definitetly been slammed plenty and deservedly on this board, Capra is never mentioned, and if the consensus was he was so bad at his job, how come there was barely even a mention of him when he became the 3rd base coach. Just a couple of it's odd that a PDD would become a 3rd base coach. Nothing about his past job performance. If the Sox named Buddy Bell 3rd base coach, there would have either been outrage that he was still employed, or joy that he didn't have anything to do with the minor leagues anymore. I think you are right that outside of some of the mod staff, and a few others, he went pretty unnoticed. Bell, Hahn, Kenny, and to a lesser degree Hostetler are the ones discussed far more often. That doesn't mean that his work wasn't discussed or that the importance of his role wasn't appreciated. I think the power structure of the White Sox front office has more to do with that than anything Capra did or did not do. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 11:28 AM) Masto's had some pretty strong polls recently in Nevada, showing her with a comfortable lead. NV is notoriously hard to poll, but if the Democrats can hold that seat (it's Reid's current seat), that will go a long, long way. Bayh is also polling strongly in Indiana. I'd say that 538's chances for the Dem Senate 'feel' about right. For the House, IIRC the Democrats really need something like D+12 on a generic ballot poll in order to have a shot at taking that back, and they're not quite there. Most likely what will happen is we get millions of more votes collectively for Democrats, but Republicans manage to hold the House at a much tighter margin because of the gerrymandering you mention. The more interesting question there, potentially, is what will happen in the race for Speaker. Portions of the GOP are waging open war on Ryan right now. I heard that she recently did very poorly in a debate against Heck. I will say though, they are both spending a lot of $ right now. Every other commercial is about one of them.

Just made the mistake of googling Nick Capra at work. -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 08:23 AM) The sooner they pull that monstrosity that is Lebatard, the sooner I will begin to listen to ESPN radio again in the mornings. Just pure awfulness. In fact, it got so bad that LA pulled the plug on them a couple weeks back and now I at least get Keyshawn and some other guy during my morning commute. Lebatard show is so godawful. Yes, I am one of those people they always make fun of who doesn't understand their stupid schtick. What do I know, felt the same way about Rome. Yeah, they are just awful. As much as Cowherd was obnoxious and elitist at times, at least he talked about some thought-provoking things once in awhile. The only good thing about Lebatard's show is the segment they do with "Tom" Kirkjian about what certain sports personalities look like.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 08:13 AM) It is no secret the media does not like John Fox, so when things turn (and they are pretty bad), they are going to bounce on him. To me, Fox has proven that he can coach, so I'm less concerned about that and more concerned about finding a lot of talent. I also don't like the message we send if we can a guy like Fox so quickly (I don't think that will win us any favors / help us long-term in finding the next candidate). If Fox was coming off of the Lovie era, I'd be more open to going quicker, but given all the recent turnover, you need to have some stability, and we ditch another coach in two years and what is next, we are turning another GM after next year. That is not a way to win and really quickly we could turn into the Browns and where the Raiders were for a long long time (until the Raiders finally developed a trust and actually gave guys a chance to show whether their system / plans worked). Heck, even look at the Cowboys. Garrett was fired by the media many times, but he's clearly not some turd of a coach. Jones was patient and it seems to largely be working out fine. I don't like how conservative Fox is, but I agree that he seems to get a bad rap. What he and Fangio have done with this defense is pretty impressive in my opinion. Winning NFL football games is an incredibly fickle thing. I really don't think most of us have the capacity to understand just how thin the margin is between being really good and being really bad. You can see this in your Cowboys example, and you can also see it with teams like the Eagles and hell, even the Bills. I am overall pretty pleased with the Fox regime. What I want to see is what Pace can do in another few years to rebuild the talent on this team, most importantly, the huge decision of who our next quarterback will be.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 08:41 AM) As I said earlier, he may turn out to be good. By all accounts he's a sharp baseball guy. I just don't like the idea of anyone getting "their shot", as if they were owed something. I'd rather they had gotten someone with deep experience outside the organization, and I don't consider Agreed, and as Bmags mentioned, the Sox FO decisions are not exactly setting the standard for innovation and excellence at the moment. When the FO appears to operate a multimillion dollar operation as if it is a family-owned hardware store, with poor results, and then continues to operate that way despite those poor results, then yes, the criticism is valid. As others have pointed out, one would assume there are folks from organizations that have a history of developing players, with a bit more of a resume, that might have been more deserving. -
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 07:54 PM) Pressure is on. Dodgers have to get game 3.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 07:29 PM) Kershaw is at 84 pitches, why would you not give him the 8th and hopefully the 9th? Only thing I can think of is to try and keep him fresh for a game 5 or 6.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 07:24 PM) Give Kershaw the 8th I'd give him the 9th too, if he has a routine 8th.
