The problem is the politicians don't feel like they can stay in office by enacting these changes, because their terms aren't long enough to see the positive impacts of the temporary pain. It isn't unlike a GM who trades away his farm system because he needs to win now to keep his job.

Got the proposal this evening. We'll probably negotiate a bit, but it sounds like it's a go. And it should be done by Thanksgiving!
