  1. QUOTE (Tony @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 05:55 PM) I would assume Theo would answer: "We had a lot of success here but ultimately we failed to reach our goal.." Which I would agree with. Again, I didn't call them failures if they don't win the World Series. Someone else did. That's a strong word. BUT, my point is about expectations as a whole and how things have developed on the North Side, similar to how they developed on the West Side. Using that example again, if the Hawks from 2010-2016 never won any Cups, but continued to make the Finals, would we say every season was a success and they are just unlucky? Well, you did agree with the poster who used that word. The bottom line is, you look at the body of work and make whatever judgments you want based on that. It is a different analysis to say "we made it to five Postseasons and never won a WS title," than to say "We didn't win the World Series this year, thus, the season was a failure." That is something that people might say immediately in the aftermath of defeat, but generally, it is well-understood and appreciated just how difficult it is to even get in a position to win.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 05:15 PM) So really, that pretty much means there would be a problem with just about any hire, unless it was some guy who was a farm director of another organization churning out talent. those guys generally don't move to the same job in other organizations. Getz did play here, but he has been trained by KC. Only a couple of years, so we will see. Obviously they liked the way he answered some questions. Personally, I don't know what to think. I am not at all familiar with his eye for talent and philosophy. I do think if he never played for the White Sox, and had the same experience, not as many would be dismayed. I also like that they hired a guy that has zero ties to any current minor leaguer. I do think that it is natural to give many players the benefit of the doubt they don't deserve when you have ties to them. Well, i agree with a previous poster. Chris has two years of experience. That seems a bit light.
  3. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 04:22 PM) While he is a former Sox player, he has experience outside org and is definitely new blood for the org. If you can name a better person for the job, please do. Well that's a bit unfair, don't you think?
  4. QUOTE (Tony @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 01:26 PM) Where did I say they needed to win the World Series every year? You find that for me, please. I specifically said 2016. And I wrote 2016 for a reason. I also haven't used the word "total failure" like you have. I have followed the Blackhawks for most of my life. I watched in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 a progression being made. In 2009, the made the Western Conference Finals, and lost. Coming into 2010, the expectation was to advance to the Stanley Cup. If they didn't it would be a disappointment, and the season wouldn't have been a successful one. The goal was to win the Stanley Cup. Is there luck involved? Sure there is. But when you build a team to be a perennial winner, winning becomes the expectation. The Cubs and Blackhawks have incredibly similar paths. If you compare the two, the 2016 Cubs should be the 2010 Blackhawks. We also know what happened after 2010 for the Hawks, and I expect similar results for the Cubs. What do you expect to be different for the Cubs in 2016 versus 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, etc?
  5. QUOTE (Tony @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 01:16 PM) You're right, that's exactly what I said. Well done. Do you deny that they will likely be in this position for several years to come?
  6. QUOTE (Tony @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 01:14 PM) And do you keep that same thought process every year? What if Theo and the Cubs never win a World Series. Would he say his run here was a success if they never won, even though the playoffs are a crap shoot? The goal is obviously to put yourself in a position to win as much as possible. Especially as their young kids get better, and get playoff experience, they will have as good or better odds to win as anyone. But you simply aren't going to win the postseason tournament every year. And when you don't, it doesn't make the season a total failure. That is a completely unrealistic and unreasonable perspective.
  7. QUOTE (Tony @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 12:55 PM) They made the NLCS last season. In the off-season, they got better. As the season went on, they continued to get better. As the entered the post-season, they were by far the healthiest team in the field. So if they have the same result as last season, we are supposed to consider this season a success? Do you believe Theo and the front office would consider it a success? Well, I guess we may as well not watch baseball for the next 10 years, because the Cubs will have to be failures for the next decade to not win the World Series every year.
  8. Another good result. Would have liked to see Howard play better, but otherwise, Brian Hoyer-led victories over crap teams do nothing for us.
  9. Hoyer has looked like total s*** in the second half.
  10. QUOTE (Tony @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 12:00 PM) I actually agree with Greg here. They made the NLCS last year, were the best team basically the entire season in 2016, and have far and away the best talent in the MLB. Oh, and they've been incredibly healthy all season. Baseball is incredibly lucky, yes. But if the Cubs don't win in 2016, the season as a whole wasn't a success. I find that to be obnoxiously arrogant and dismissive of the rest of the League. They've been good for 2 years now. Let's not pretend as though they are old hands at this. I understand the quality of their team, but making the pennant or the WS isn't so pedestrian for them at this point that it should render the entire season a failure.
  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 11:38 AM) Scary thing about the Cubs is they are so good defensively and have such good pitching. I knew they'd pound SF. A Conor Gillaspie can get lucky and get hot for a week. The Cubs have good/great players and great pitching and defense. They are a lock to win it all. That said about the discussion here. If they don't win it all this year, they're a failure. I guess they could point to baby steps in saying they at least made the WS for the first time since 45, but it'd be a failure of a year. Cubs are that good. Those great Detroit teams proved there are no guarantees, however. s*** can happen but I think talent will prevail here. That acquisition of Chapman was huge. We should have beaten them to the punch and traded them Robertson for four players like the Yankees did. They haven't even got there yet. I do agree they should be favorites to reach the WS, but this isn't the NBA or even the NFL. Nothing is a foregone conclusion in baseball, and the Dodgers have a little bit of talent as well.
  12. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 10:29 AM) Someone remove the bubble screen from Loggains binder Cutler hits alshon on that Go route Yeah, i had just texted that to my friend. Hoyer reads defenses really well, but that ball needs to have some zip on it, not lofted up towards the outside.
  13. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 10:21 AM) Man CBS bench of announcers is just awful. The color guy may as well just come out and say he bet the Jags this week.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 10:13 AM) A not very good start. It would be nice for Fox to come in and set the tone with a play call on 4th and 2 from the Jags 42 other than a stupid punt call.
  15. QUOTE (Footlongcomiskeydog @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 08:35 AM) The tribe are playing good baseball right now, but their rotation is very weak after Kluber. The Cubs rotation is much much better. Bullpens are pretty close to even too. Cubs will be heavy favorites to win if they meet up next round. Everyone keeps saying this, but they've fared pretty well against two of the best offenses in baseball over the last 5 games.
  16. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 08:34 AM) The smart ones. If you can consistently survive the 162 game blob that is baseball regular season and give yourself a chance come October then you're winning. Well of course...that is obviously better than the alternative...but in the end, it's about titles. I'll take my '05 WS title over my wife's memories of 17-4 victories at the Jake any day.
  17. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 08:20 AM) To hell with titles. They're going to be in the playoffs or damn close to the playoffs every year for the next decade. That's all that matters in a sport like baseball... For whom? The fans?
  18. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 08:02 AM) Man, would y'all stfu about Cubs fans. Who cares what they say on twitter or FB or at the bar or what f***ing ever. This team is god-like. They're going on a Braves-like run and ain't s*** anybody can do about it. I'll never openly root for the Cubs but them winning it all might force that other Chicago team to not be awful at just about every aspect of baseball. Their position players remind me very much of those Indians teams from the 90's. They are just going to be stacked at almost every position. It would be nice if you would remove your head from their ass, however. Also, those Indians teams had like, what, 4 HoF'ers, and how many WS titles did they win?
  19. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 15, 2016 -> 11:05 PM) Putting anything cool at halfcourt? Funny that you ask, Russ. We were going to, but the logos cost about $1200. They offered to throw in one for free, but I used that upgrade to get them to upgrade us to LED lighting fixtures instead. My wife wanted Ohio State and I wanted Oregon, so we compromised and did neither. At least this way it isn't personalized in case we need to move or something.
  20. QUOTE (Footlongcomiskeydog @ Oct 15, 2016 -> 09:26 PM) You gotta get on base to steal and Lester has been pretty good at not allowing many baserunners. Plus Ross has been on his game this postseason and is gunning dudes down. The tribe still gotta get past Toronto too. Have a feeling that series is gonna go 7. Well the Indians are 5-0 in the postseason and up 2-0 in the series. The Cubs still have to get past LA too, you realize.
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 15, 2016 -> 09:20 PM) Indians actually match up well, as they can steal bases. Like you're implying, I don't trust the Indians starting pitching after Kluber though. Bauer has the ability to throw a dominant start, but you just don't know what you'll get from him. If Kluber can continue pitching well, with their bullpen, they definitely can continue to win games, but they're going to need to continue to hit.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 15, 2016 -> 07:41 PM) Thing is ... technically if we as Catholics vote for Clinton over Trump since one is pro abortion and the other anti, we could be denied Communion if our votes were public. Also, Kaine could be denied communion if he got in the line in which the bishop who ripped him was distributing communion. Kaine is unable to receive communion because of his public stance that is pro choice on this issue. And this is why I just have no interest in going to church.
  23. Yeah I heard Lebatard inadvertently mention the Mike & Mike changes. I guess they are hoping to pull from some of their depth to help some of their other programming? I will be interested to see what they do with Golic. I'd be interested if they replaced Greenie with Bomani Jones or Russillo. I feel like Kanell is just weighing RR down.
