  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 10:27 PM) Thing is, in the Sox organization, the only players that I think "other GMs won't trade" are Viciedo and Sale. Reed is close to that list, but relievers don't tend to have the same prestige. I think Quintana could be on that list. I wonder if Axelrod would be of interest to any NL teams. Seems like a guy that could be fairly serviceable in the NL. I know we always bash these guys...then they end up in NL SR's and represent themselves fairly well.
  2. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 10:23 PM) Which makes Greinke perfect for the Sox because they can't compete with any other team's farm systems. The difference is that Kenny will trade the players other GMs won't.
  3. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 10:17 PM) You don't move him down in the order. You DL him. If he's truly hurt. I don't believe he is; at least I don't believe it is any injury that a short DL stint is going to fix. Hawk is pretty close to the players, especially PK, and he hasn't said a thing about him being injured. Just has continued to say "he is close," and clearly cheerleading for him to get back to being himself. If he was injured, I think we'd be hearing Hawk make more injury excuses for him. PK puts a lot of pressure on himself. He is obviously struggling a bit mentally. He is pouting more than I have ever seen him; more than in 2003 even. He isn't running out of the box. Move him down to a lower-leverage position in the order, let him get his head right, and get back on track. We're going to need him down the stretch.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 10:14 PM) I think what he's saying is Hamels wouldn't want to sign an extension to play in Chicago. Every writer seems to suggest this is true, and that he wants a warm weather location. Ahh, well he specifically mentioned in a pennant race. I was assuming he meant this year.
  5. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 10:11 PM) But does he have the desire to pitch in Chicago? Marty, I very much appreciate your willingness to say what needs to be said at times, but I don't think anyone can question Hamels. Philly is no easy place to play...and even this year, when everyone else on that team has struggled, he's been outstanding. Considering next year is his FA year, were he to be traded, a chance to flourish in the Postseason would only increase his earning potential.
  6. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 10:08 PM) Is this sarcasm, couldn't tell? Nope. I think you are right. I don't want to pay any one player as much as Hamels wants. He's a stud, but he's not going to be worth that over the life of the deal. Then you start looking at what we could get out of one of the kids that will be making nothing, and it's just not a wise decision. Considering we've got Danks signed for what we do, and Sale and Quintana, I think we could maybe benefit from trying to keep Jake, but we don't need to be dishing out $120 million to anyone right now. How many of those contracts have ever actually worked out?
  7. I like him. I think he's got good stuff and a great mentality. I'd be very hesitant to move him at this point.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 10:01 PM) That's really $24 million for 2 years, because you're giving him the buyout. Are we sure we want to turn around and give Peavy that kind of money? I guess $12 million for Peavy (average, like AJ's deal, assuming they could backload the 2nd year of the contract), wouldn't be the WORST thing in the world, but it's not a huge bargain necessarily. Yeah, I suppose not. I'd rather have Jake then Gavin, if the price is anywhere near the same, I know that much. On the second thought, you guys are right. The hell with Hamels. I don't think I ever want to be on the hook for twentysome million dollars. Let's roll with what we have and a few cheap pieces and take our chances. We have a good thing going here with these kids.
  9. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 09:54 PM) I get it. I just don't see what a day off or two will do. He had a few days off last week and is still ice cold. We've faced a lot of lefties recently, and Cook is an extreme groundball pitcher. I'd like to keep throwing him out there for now.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 09:51 PM) If they went that direction, they would also keep Gavin Floyd as the fifth starter at $9.5 million for 2013. Nobody knows exactly what we have with Quintana. He could just as easily end up Phil Humber 2012 version as a solid starter we can rely upon. Who knows? I'd probably just dump Gavin...if I had the money to spend, I'd try and get Jake to stay for 2/$20, which he would most likely laugh at, but I'm not willing to offer him another huge contract after what we've gone through with him.
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 09:41 PM) Phillies going to offer him 120 million dollars reports say. I think it would have been more realistic for Sox to even consider that if Danks didn't sign his extension. They could afford it if they win it all. Hamels/Sale/Quintana/Danks/Humber?/Castro?/Axe? Danks will be fine over the long haul. I guess if you signed Hamels, you'd have to let Jake go, but I'd pay Hamels the money. Guy is as good as it gets.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 08:36 PM) Yes, terrible idea trying to win it this year The thing is, I still don't believe the Sox can compete with other teams to get these marquee players. Rangers have so much more to offer than the Sox do, and they supposedly want Hamels. I've said a few times now that the Sox/Brewers absolutely don't match up. I wouldn't do it for Greinke. I would for Hamels. Then I'd offer him a lot of money to stay. Pair him with Sale, Quintana and Peavy, and you have an awfully good chance at beating the Rangers...more so than with Viciedo. Next year, you see where the cards fall....if you can sign Hamels and Peavy wants to stay, you tell him you'll bring him back on a 2/$20. If he has problems with that, you let him walk.
  13. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 08:36 PM) that will never happen Probably not...but it's what should happen. We don't owe him the cleanup spot.
  14. Please move him down to 6th or 7th. When was the last time he knocked in an important run? The Cubs' series?
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 09:01 PM) Trading Viciedo for someone who's only a rental would be just a terrible idea. Look at the contracts being thrown around for Hamels and Greinke. 20 million dollars...yeah right, Sox won't be offering that. I don't think trading him for Hamels would be a bad idea. Would winning the World Series be a bad idea this year?
  16. Only guy I'd trade Dayan for, that's been discussed, is Hamels.
  17. Would be interesting to see AJ catch him, since they dislike one another...
  18. So Greinke pulled from his start Wednesday to "recharge his batteries" apparently... And the plot thickens...
  19. I just want to say Kenny is a pimp. Kenny vacations in Eygpt
  20. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 08:33 AM) If Hamels is asking for $23-24 million and 6 years, let's just say, $140 million total value... Would any team in their right mind offer $120 million for Greinke? Surely, he will get at least $100 million from someone if Danks got $65. Marty, you're seriously going to tell me that it would be a wise decision for the White Sox to commit that kind of money? That's crazy. We've seen from our experience with Quintana and Danks this year (one a total surprise who cost nothing, the other someone who we're searching through insurance paperwork on for a claim) that it's probably not the best idea in the world to take that kind of gamble. Heck, Rios, Dunn and Peavy have shown the dangers of that kind of gamble. And now Danks. The problem is all the big market teams are going to shy away from Greinke because of his social anxiety disorder or whatever he has. Maybe the Dodgers would offer him something huge, and I know they are a big market team, but SoCal isn't NY or Boston or even Chicago.
  21. Meanwhile, if the Rangers get Hamels, we are really in trouble.
  22. I know the A's have been playing well as of late, but BB isn't usually one to have delusions of grandeur. Not sure if Colon burned bridges here when he disappeared for a time, but bringing back Bart could be another cheaper solution.
  23. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 14, 2012 -> 10:47 PM) You're not a fan of downer posts (as if anyone should care.) You include this in a post where you say the odds are against Youkilis staying healthy and effective. I admit I was wrong about Youkilis...although I suppose we need to see more than two weeks before we make judgment...but he's definitely got more left than I anticipated. He's been an absolute blessing. As for Reed, I think Fathom made a great point the other night. He needs to throw the ball on more than just one plane, or "change the eye level" of the hitters, as SS would say. Most of his pitches are coming in between the knee and the waist, and given that he throws 3/4, the ball stays on that plane for a long time. Would like to see him burying more pitches down and in instead of just a foot off the plate.
  24. The fountains of "the K" spew the urine of the White Sox bullpen.
