QUOTE (MAX @ Jul 8, 2012 -> 10:54 AM) I think Dayan is going to have a huge second half and losing him for a starting pitcher would be a mixed blessing at best this season, and extremely short sighted beyond that. If you think the player you are acquiring is truly the guy to put you over the top, then you don't worry too much about the long term. There are too many unknowns. You control what you can, and take your shots at winning when you can, because there may not be other chances down the road.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 8, 2012 -> 10:53 AM) Outside of the guys in the bullpen, I'm not sure the Sox have "another decent prospect". I really don't think there are going to be better offers out there than a player of Viciedo's ceiling for a 3-month rental. Yes, we may have to toss in some other pieces, but not a guy like Reed or Jones, who have tremendous value in their own right at this point.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 8, 2012 -> 11:47 AM) Viciedo and one of those bullpen pieces like Reed or Jones might give you a legit chance at Hamels/Greinke. I don't think you'd need to give them either of Reed or Jones. Give them Viciedo and another decent prospect and it would be done.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 8, 2012 -> 11:49 AM) If there's a thread about trading for Justin Upton, he's the only guy on our roster who could bring him back. Nonsense.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 8, 2012 -> 08:26 AM) There's no need to go after a back end starter and we don't have the resources to land a top line starter so stay put. I know we're all overly paranoid about Sale and Peavy but realistically at this point they're both completely healthy and we're all worried about nothing. We have the resources to land any pitcher that becomes available. The question is how much will we be willing to give up. I feel comfortable with Peavy at this point, and Sale looks as strong as ever. If Danks is going to come back any time soon, we won't have a spot for another SP anyways, given the way Gavin has pitched recently and of course, the Feathered.

QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Jul 7, 2012 -> 03:57 PM) for a bad team, they are surprisingly watchable, unlike last year. Every time Josh Willingham is at the plate, there is a chance the ball will go very far. Joe Mauer is quietly has a fine season. Trevor Plouffe has been flying high since June 1. Ben Revere is a little spark plug of a player. The bullpen is pretty good. But, a team will never win too many game without decent starting pitching. Outside of Scott Diamond, and lately Liriano (who will be traded by the deadline) they have no one who can get past the 4th inning with any consistency. Even though the Twins have been outscored by a staggering 89 runs, they have played 29 one run games. Jim, where do you think Liriano could end up? Hearing any rumors?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 7, 2012 -> 07:58 PM) How did the Rays get out of it? Or Pittsburgh? Pittsburgh isn't out of anything yet. But it helps to have guys like Longoria and Price, or McCutcheon and McDonald, etc.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 7, 2012 -> 07:19 PM) 2012: $6 million 2013: $11 million 2014: $18 million 2015: $19 million. Yeah, you don't have to give up a single player if you want him back. The Marlins would happily give him up unless they're in first place. I'd much, much, much rather go after Cole Hamels if we're going to be on the hook for $48 million from '13-15 anyways.

This is what happens when you try to develop everyone from within. Opportunity costs, folks. Kills you.
-
If we're in it, it won't happen. If we have a lead, they may try and rest him, but if he is needed, or if he make the postseason, they will run him out there.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 7, 2012 -> 12:09 PM) Do tell. I asked Gavin where Jesus was when he was struggling during his start last week. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 7, 2012 -> 11:57 AM) You guys are delusional for where the free agent market is going. I tend to agree with you on this. I think he'd get at the very least, like a 1/9-10 offer from someone.

Honestly people, aren't there better things you all could do with your time?

Maybe I should just skip this one to keep my blood pressure down. Every game Floyd pitches I get into fights with other posters in the game thread. Last week Greg said I offended his religious beliefs. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 7, 2012 -> 11:37 AM) I know people really want to, but it way too early to write off the Tigers. I don't think a soul has written off the Tigers. The entire national media still expects them to win this division. Sox fans are certainly not writing them off. Indians fans are certainly not writing them off. I think Detroit fans are probably writing the Tigers off more than anyone else.

Tough to stay motivated in this damn heat. Time to get back on the wagon...going to start on tuesday trying to do workouts in the morning before work to beat this damn heat. We'll see how that goes.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 7, 2012 -> 07:22 AM) I'm not eager at all to trade for a reliever, but I do understand the uneasiness associated with all the young guys. Getting Crain back and hopefully everyone else will be a nice start. I would still rather trade for a middle relief guy than waste talent on a backup catcher. If it were me though, I'd just stand pat. I have a feeling that is Kenny's plan too unless something wows him. He'll probably feel out the starting pitcher market as a "just to see" sort of thing, but at this point the only kind of starting pitcher it'd make sense to get is a top of the rotation guy. I agree. Should Greinke and Hamels become available, he will certainly do his due diligence, but I think this is a 2005 kind of deadline.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jul 7, 2012 -> 06:44 AM) I finished the first season of Breaking Bad last night. It's a good show, but I'm not sure what all the hype is about. Season 2 must pick it up, right? It does get better.

The Twins still fully believe they are in the race.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2012 -> 06:38 PM) I think Cain's a legit sub 3.50 ERA guy in the AL as well. Lincecum...Cy Young level linecum was a sub-3 ERA pitcher in the AL, but he's been so inconsistent with his work ethic and it leads to those stretches where he gets shelled. Too much weed...

If you'd have told me on July 6th, we'd have the same record as the Pirates, I'd have been very concerned.
