  1. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 18, 2012 -> 12:38 PM) This. One thing I hope this movie does is prove that a prequel can be done correctly Idris Elba!
  2. Looks like I get Dick Bremer and Ron Coomer...karma for ripping Bremer in the other thread...
  3. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 22, 2012 -> 06:31 PM) Why am I not surprised that the "Keep Hawk" demographic is aligning with the "no women on my sports network" demographic. Oh give me a break, Steve...as if you are Mr. Mature and Classy or some s***...get of your high horse.
  4. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ May 22, 2012 -> 05:22 PM) I get that ESPN's target demographic is almost exclusively male. But seriously, who tunes in to ESPN to satisfy their dongs? That's just weird. If you want sports information, tune into a sports channel. If you want hot women, fire up the old Intarwebz machine. Why must your 24-7 Tebow coverage be interspersed with boner induction? Compartmentalize, people! Especially since Tebow already gives me a boner....oops
  5. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ May 22, 2012 -> 06:12 PM) No. I admit it sounds weird, but only because it's so unusual. Try to judge them on content alone and it's fine. EDIT: The attractiveness rule is incredibly irritating, too, though. It makes the company look like cavemen and essentially undermines what little progress they've made. I don't know what you're talking about...I couldn't even tell you what Erin Andrews looks like.
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 22, 2012 -> 05:58 PM) Thanks badger. I know on his Vegas DUI he lost his license 6 months and he had no jail time and no community service. And in that case, they did not know about the DUI in Kansas City for some reason. If you were representing a client with let's say, one previous DUI (two total), in Chicago, what do you think would be a reasonable outcome that you could get your client? Considering nobody was injured, etc. Would the police use the fact the person was sleeping in a moving vehicle in the hearing? Tony LaRussa got one for being caught sleeping in his car at a light...
  7. Jesus, it's tough to get a DUI in this city...I guess falling asleep at a light would do it though. I'm assuming he's plead guilty on both DUIs thus far. The first one he probably got supervision for, the second he most likely took a hard conviction for. The issue with DUIs is that even though you can usually get supervision or probation for the first one, it still counts as a conviction. Most states now treat a third DUI in less than 10 years as a felony and suspend your license for up to 10 years. I'm not sure how they tally them up though if they are in different states. As for his driving privileges, all states use a nationwide database now so that he can't get a DL unless he fulfills the conditions of his plea in every state he got a DUI in. So if he has a suspended DL in Nevada, he can't get one in Missouri until his license is reinstated in Nevada. As Badger says, we would need to know the particulars, but he is really, really f***ed. Lucky he isn't in Illinois, as it is one of the most punitive states in the nation when it comes to DUIs.
  8. QUOTE (Jake @ May 22, 2012 -> 04:45 PM) If you're looking for some magically insightful announcer, keep looking. There are none. Once you know as much as many of us Soxtalkers do, nobody's going to really blow your mind with insight. Most announcers end up stating the extremely obvious when trying to be insightful or just say asinine things ("Dunn hit a home run at Wrigley, but it was wind-aided"). I say just shut up and repeat the interesting stats the behind the scenes guys give you. The best broadcaster is going to accurately give you a feel for the ebb and flow of the energy in the game. I think Hawk does that. Play by play is not really relevant in this medium, and Hawk knows that and brings some fun to it. Stoney is about as insightful as it gets and rarely has more than one non-obvious thing to say in a given game. Unrealistic standards...and I think it has more to do with overexposure than anything else. Every "average" fan I speak to loves Hawk and I doubt you see him go unless it is on his own terms. He said he wants to die in the booth
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 22, 2012 -> 04:26 PM) If you replace the word "GM" with "Ozzie", you have the exact response we have to 75% of your posts. But then they'd be true!
  10. QUOTE (jhonnydanks @ May 22, 2012 -> 04:11 PM) i will cry the day hawk is gone. we got a guy there. I agree...I think people take him for granted...the fact that I miss Harry Carey even though I only saw him as a Cubs' broadcaster has taught me enough about appreciating the Hawkeroo.
  11. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 22, 2012 -> 04:05 PM) Fangraphs: Hawk the Worst GQ Magazine: Hawk the Worst Well we all know GQ would know... Let's face it, not many other fans are going to like Hawk...he's incredibly annoying if you're not a Sox fan...(and obviously annoying to some that are). He's obviously had quite an impact on the industry though...and IMO, the entire point of a broadcaster is to excite and interest his own team's fans. I could give a s*** what other fans think. Go watch your own team's broadcast.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ May 22, 2012 -> 04:03 PM) D. Sutton out in Arizona is far and away the best, IMO I don't quite see it...I think he's good, but I've heard Kal say he liked Sutton as well and I just find him to be solid...
  13. QUOTE (chw42 @ May 22, 2012 -> 04:02 PM) What's so bad about Gary Thorne? He's a homer as much as anyone on earth, so if you're holding that against Hawk, you've got to hold it against Thorne. Secondly, he tries to be incredibly overdramatic and it gets old in baseball...hockey, that works, baseball....no. Thirdly, in the past, it has been painful listening to him trying to make the Orioles sound respectful...maybe it's working better now that they actually have been winning a bit. I've always thought Palmer was by far the better member of that team...
  14. QUOTE (JoshPR @ May 22, 2012 -> 04:00 PM) Gary Thorne is pretty good too Ugh...he should stick to hockey... Another one of my favorites is the Rangers color man, Tom Grieve.
  15. QUOTE (Baron @ May 22, 2012 -> 03:56 PM) Yeah it either seems you get the extreme homer or the guy who knows the game as well as anyone but is dull as ****. I'd f***ing love to hear Hawk paired with Rob Dibble.
  16. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 22, 2012 -> 03:51 PM) This post is ridiculous and blatantly ignores what "the original poster" posted. You are keying on one word in there and ignoring everything around it. Plenty of substance. Hawk would be a terrible color guy because he still doesn't work well with anyone. No, you're just trying to defend one of your supporters. One of your main qualms about Harrelson is his homerism, and you made that clear in your post.
  17. QUOTE (Baron @ May 22, 2012 -> 03:49 PM) Im just wondering who is going to replace Hawk then? Any names? I agree....I have seen the other 60-70 guys that do this job and I can tell you most of them suck ass... One of my personal favorites is Jim Palmer. Mark Grace does a nice job for the DBacks. Don Orsillo is good on Nesn. Of course I love Vin Scully. Ray Fosse is excellent in Oakland, and Glen Kuiper, their pbp man is pretty solid too. Other than that there aren't a whole lot of guys I can tolerate, whether they are color guys or pbp. Some especially awful guys? Dick Bremer on the Twins broadcast, Rick Manning in Cleveland (talk about a dick), Buck Martinez in Toronto, Gary Thorne in Baltimore, Mark Gubicza and Victor Rojas in Anaheim.
  18. QUOTE (Cali @ May 22, 2012 -> 03:46 PM) Yeah, I'm over Hawk. He's been the Sox announcer for as long as I've known about baseball and have loved his calls in the past, but yeah, he's got to go. The idea that Hawk being passionate somehow makes him a good announcer doesn't make sense to me. I'm passionate about the Sox, I don't need to guy calling the games to be that way. I wan't him to just... call the game. Of course he's not going to go anywhere unless nature...uh, takes it's course. I became of fan of Josh Lewin when he was calling Ranger games a few years ago. Just the right amount of excitement without bordering on being a Homer. Lewin actually broke in doing Cubs games, replacing the Chipster (or is it Skip?) from time to time... Talk about catch phrases though...MOVE THOSE CHAINS!
  19. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 22, 2012 -> 03:36 PM) Cases in point. The people who are tired of Hawk are not talking about his being a homer, or getting excited. Those are both good things (to at least some extent). That is not what people dislike. People want an announcer who likes the Sox and shows it, but who is also... you know... a competent announcer? The original poster mentioned that he did not want the pbp man to be a homer. Hawk is a homer. So would we be fine with a "professional" pbp guy and Hawk as the color man, since that person is for some reason allowed to be a homer? Tell us all what makes an announcer competent...
  20. Young whippersnappers these days have no respect for their elders.
  21. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 22, 2012 -> 04:09 PM) Lawrence Holmes Oh god no...Lawrence Holmes doesn't know jack s*** about baseball...
  22. Couldn't disagree more. I've got Extra Innings (the DirecTV equivalent to mlb.tv) and I've seen every other broadcast team over the course of the last 4 seasons. I'll agree there are better teams out there...but there are a lot of bad ones too...I do enjoy Brenly, and some of the more forward-thinking color guys, but I prefer the open-homerism versus the veiled neutralism every day of the week. Secondly, I enjoy that Hawk is as passionate about the team as I am. I love that he acts childish at times and tries to will fly balls over the fence when we really need a home run (the Viciedo DAAAAAAGGGUMMMITTT from last week's Tiger game comes to mind). I do hate when he goes overboard on the umpires, and I do get tired of hearing about Yas and Catfish Hunter, but I appreciate everything else he brings to the table enough that I can appreciate the opportunity I am being given in hearing him call games while he is still here. I understand he is not for everyone, but I also think this is a grass is greener syndrome in play. I can't fathom having to listen to some dull "professional" who I can tell doesn't care enough to even give a s*** about the emotions I am going through as I watch what unfolds on the screen. Now the radio broadcast team...that needs to be a professional team...
