    P90X

QUOTE (Reddy @ Feb 11, 2010 -> 12:22 AM) it'll make your muscles larger if you eat right, work out right, and take your supplements (recovery drinks, whey, creatine, etc) I second that. This will do everything you need if you do it right. You'll just have to focus on doing maximum weights for 8-10 reps...and as Reddy said, they will give you instructions on how to work each exercise for lean and toned or to build size. And you'll also see in the dvds...some of these dudes are pretty ripped up, and they definitely struggle in these workouts. So you can really do a wide variety of things.
  2. QUOTE (shakes @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 04:11 PM) I think they did explore it, as they should have, it just wasn't in the cards this year. I think it was a bit of showmanship for the fans, and the organization wanting to leave on good terms with Jim. It sounds like they were honest and straight forward. From what I've heard, they never really even got into money. If that's the case, than they were never considering it too seriously. Let's face it, if Kenny wanted him, he would have signed him. He has trumped Ozzie's opinion on a player a dozen times in the past, why would it have changed this time? Ozzie is just wearing this one. No, I honestly think they are giving Ozzie a chance to have the roster he wants, instead of the roster Kenny wants. I think Ozzie has told Kenny and Jerry in the end of the season meetings that he wants a faster, more flexible roster, and now he is getting it. I don't know how long his rope will be, but they are giving him some for now. The hints have all been there, from what happened at Soxfest to some comments by JR. The reason money wasn't brought up with Jim is because it would never have been an issue. He would have accepted whatever they would have offered him.

    P90X

QUOTE (Sonik22 @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 04:28 PM) So are you guys noticing a huge difference in your bodies since you started p90x? I'm considering starting it once summer comes around. I have smoked on and off for 15 years, have always been fairly athletic, but never worked out. Throughout my teens and early twenties, I stayed fit by playing sports with my friends, basically. Since they've all bitten the dust and gotten married, started families, my level and frequency of physical activity had declined. Then I moved to Vegas. Everyone is at the pool here flashing their s*** all day and night, so I figured I had better get my ass in gear. I quit smoking around Christmas and then started P90X on Jan 18th. I did no preliminary working out before hand. I can tell you about 23 days, I am already in the best shape of my life since high school. My clothes fit much better (in fact, some are too big now so I may have to go shopping), I feel a thousand times better, I have more energy, etc. I cannot tell you how rapidly the program begins to work. A lot of this I felt occurring after the first 5 days, to be honest with you. I have no doubt that in 70 days or whatever, once I get finished with the program, that I will be one of the more healthy and fit people out at the pool, and if I would have known results like this were this readily attainable, I would have done it in 2004 when the program was first released to the public. I've already convinced 4 people to buy the program, and I will continue to tell everyone I know that it will absolutely change your life if you put the effort in. I know it has mine.
  4. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 05:53 PM) It's on an NHL-size rink this year. I personally adore the Olympics, both Winter and Summer. Me too. It starts Friday night?
  5. QUOTE (longshot7 @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 04:56 PM) This thread is ridiculous. I am laughing at all the "be a dick to her" advice. Here's a thought: do you really want to be with someone who prefers you to be an asshole to them? Maybe it's an age thing - most girls out of college are not interested in bulls***. Just be honest and nice and it'll happen. Well, see that is why you have to separate what is what. The whole "asshole" game works if you want just to get laid, or if you want to date a stripper. Otherwise, yeah, you may want to be a bit mysterious and unique at first, but if you think healthy relationships are about mistreating your girlfriend/spouse, then you are not going to be in one.
  6. QUOTE (The Beast @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 04:53 PM) Time to stop with reading David DeAngelo's content. What a bastard. I'm definitely looking for a relationship so I'll stick with 20-24. Oh brother. Read those books for laughs, not to learn how to interact with women... Ross, just keep your mind open and roll with it. You don't even know who you are yet, so how can you possibly know what it is you want? My advice would be to just seek out activities on campus. Even those you're not sure you would be interested in. Force yourself to get out there and just interact with people. Say hello, introduce yourself, and as long as you aren't a complete asshole or totally f***ing weird, you'll do fine. You just need to make contacts and see who and what makes you happy. Once you figure those things out, you can hone in the details a bit more.

    Insanity

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 04:18 PM) Insanity workout It's pretty much exactly like P90X. Only your not spending money on pull up bars, yoga mats, weights, etc.. your using your only body as the weight and your also plateauing in 60 days. Same with the nutrition plan, etc.. Pretty incredible workout I'm looking at, not to mention saving a lot of money. This is produced by the same company that created P90X, Beachbody. It's basically P90X, but all cardio. From what I understand, it is meant to whip the s*** out of you and take every ounce of body fat off you that is possible in 60 days. There is less emphasis on the resistance training activities, but from what I can tell, you do do lots of pushups and core work. I am considering buying this after I finish P90X. My main concern is whether it is sustainable for any considerable period of time. My goal is to get extremely fit, to bulk up a tad, but mostly just to get into really awesome beach/pool shape. Insanity looks like something to get you into well, insane shape. Just not sure that with my eating and drinking habits, as well as my busy work schedule, whether it is worth putting my body through that if there is any doubt that I can maintain it. I have definitely read that there are some P90X grads who use Insanity, but I'm not sure it's really meant to be on the same level. If you get it Ace, I would definitely love to hear how it goes.
  8. QUOTE (shakes @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 02:20 PM) I don't think Thome was ever seriously in the Sox plans. And Jim had to take a very small base salary to earn at bats from the bench. That would indicate to me that nobody trusts him to be a full time productive player anymore. It doesn't mean he can't be, it's just that nobody was willing to make a big committment to him. So I'm guessing that you thought the whole Soxfest drama was just a show to placate the fanbase? I suppose it could have been, although I highly doubt our FO would mess around with Jim like that. As for the full-time productive player statement, I agree with you there. Guess I just misinterpreted your original statements. My bad.
  9. If you want more mass, you definitely need to do more weight and less reps. But if you are a victim of chronic strains and the like, you may wish to consult a physician or trainer before doing anything too difficult. I'm going to head out on the road bike today for about an 8 mile ride. We'll see how the quitting smoking and recent working out have helped my endurance. Pray that I don't die. It's a concrete jungle out there in Vegas...
  10. So what is everyone doing for their ladies for Valentine's Day? I have to work Sunday night (I know, darn), so I am sending a bouquet of different colored roses (why the hell do flowers cost $125??) and also giving her a pair of sunglasses she has wanted. I am sure I will be forced to pay for an expensive dinner at some point too, but at least not this weekend. What about you guys? Any of the single guys planning on making a move on a lovely lady you know?
  11. QUOTE (shakes @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 01:31 PM) We'll see. It could happen. It's also possible that Kubel and Cuddyer can't repeat what they did last year, and Thome is there for insurance. All I was trying to say is there was no real market for him to get guaranteed at bats. It don't think anyone ever questioned Thome would play a reduced role this season. That is fairly difficult to argue. But it certainly appears as though there were suitors for him, including our own GM and others, as opposed to your earlier statement that our own GM and every other GM were aware he could no longer be productive.
  12. QUOTE (shakes @ Feb 9, 2010 -> 04:33 PM) You don't seem to be able to see past this Thome or DH thing. Thome is exactly the type of guy who is falling off from injuries and decline, due to age. Of all the areas of Sox management to trust, I trust their training staff. It was made clear when Jim was traded last year, Thome wouldn't be back, because they didn't think he could do it anymore. I don't know why people were surprised when he wasn't brought back. I thought it was obvious by the second half last year that Dye and Thome were sliding fast and hard. Not to mention, every other GM seems to agree with that assesment. It was time to move on. People act like their production can't be replaced. The Sox currently have a poor replacement for the DH spot, unless they are really planning on using it to improve the defense and keep guys like Q and Konerko fresh. Keep in mind the easiest 'position' to improve would be the DH. You can't say that about past weaknesses of this team, when we were dying for a CF or SP. Umm, what? When was this made clear? I seem to remember it being very possible all along that Thome could be brought back? Secondly, you're basing the fact that Jim Thome, a DH who admits he can no longer play the field, signed a contract in January as proof that every other GM agrees with the assessment that Thome can no longer produce? I'm sorry, but given the fact that Johnny Damon is still unsigned makes that deduction seem a bit loose to me. There are all sorts of factors at play here, and if you base your conclusion all on the fact that Thome signed late and cheap, you're clearly ignoring those other factors, considering there are other productive players still on the market.
  13. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Feb 9, 2010 -> 04:14 PM) Started working out 3 weeks ago. I've done alittle of Flash's idea which helped and alittle of my own. So far... even the family has seen results. Gonna do one more month before I show off. Nice work man. Keep it up. Maybe when you become a real man you can come into the P90X thread...

Did Core Synergistics for the first time tonight. Was tougher than I expected. Those freaking pushup runs or whatever are brutal in that low position.
  15. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 9, 2010 -> 07:54 PM) The low temperature on Feb 8 isn't relevant. Minneapolis does have colder winters, but games aren't played then. Here are the average low temps city apr may june july aug sep oct Min 36 48 58 63 61 51 39 Cle 38 48 58 62 61 54 44 Mil 37 47 57 63 63 54 43 Chi 40 51 61 66 65 57 45 Add in Minnesota will only play 3 home night games in April and won't start their home schedule until April 12, the chances are they won't even have the lowest gametime average temperatures in their division. 36 is cold! All I know is I think playing in the cold temps does have some sort of cumulative/carry over effect with teams. I hope that affects Minnesota just as it has the White Sox and Indians in previous years. Where is Qwerty when I need him?
  16. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 9, 2010 -> 02:48 PM) There is such thing as getting in and out of the friend zone. Some guys just feel sorry for themselves once they get into it and dont realize that playing hard to get works both ways. Make her want you. If she doesnt, then the "fish in the sea" adage still fits I agree, but if the girl is still recovering from a bad breakup, it may come off that he is an asshole instead of "hard to get." You've got to be really careful with people that are hurt and trying to repair themselves.
  17. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Feb 9, 2010 -> 01:22 PM) awwww good for you. Maybe in another week, you can paint her nails or something. Says the guy fantasizing about the washed-up B movie actress in photoshopped White Sox gear.
  18. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Feb 9, 2010 -> 01:49 PM) I kinda thought things were gravy and feelings were mutual and what not, so I didn't really get aggressive in seeking a relationship. We were talking almost every day and hanging out. She said she'd been feeling down lately so I took her to lunch today, and then she went on a bit later saying I'm a great friend and that she feels better. I guess she's coming off a relationship where she got cheated on so maybe its just the timing. We'll see. How long ago did this relationship end? I don't think there is anything wrong with being called "a great friend." Women are not men. They DO want their man to be a friend first (at least the one they ultimately choose). You just have to make sure that you don't become THE friend.
  19. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Feb 9, 2010 -> 01:24 PM) I seem to have made the tragic mistake of being too friendly. s***. What do you mean by this? Elaborate...

QUOTE (Reddy @ Feb 9, 2010 -> 01:04 PM) yeah it is. i didn't eat nearly well enough the first time through - and it's still been hard but i'm working on it. the problem i have is that since i'm trying to add bulk, i need 3000ish calories a day. doing that healthily is hard, having the money for it is even harder. lol. but i'm doing what i can. and yeah, if you can find a way to do actual pullups thats gonna be what you wanna do - that's a whole lotta reps you got going on there. but if not, if your gym has one of those machines with a bar you pull down (can't think of the actual name), you can sit there, adjust weight accordingly, and that will kind of simulate a pullup as well. I have been struggling with the eating as well. I am supposed to be getting around 2600 calories right now (adjusted down a bit after losing some weight from my initial starting point), and it is darn near impossible to eat that much, like you said, without eating Big Mac's and Taco Bell. I'm doing my best with the protein shakes and the yogurt and vegetables, but I usually have to have one hearty meal a day, which does have more fat in it than they would like, more carbs in it than they would like, more condiments, etc., but it is the ONLY way I can get anywhere near 2000 calories even. My strategy has basically been to eat cleaner than I was before, but also, as with everything, moderation. I am not going to kill myself or make myself miserable here. I am not trying to be on the infomercial. I just want to get into kick ass shape, and this seems to be getting the job done. After I get through the program once, I may do what you're doing now, Reddy - try to add some bulk. I plan on purchasing the Powerblock adj dumbbells soon, and so that should help in accomplishing that goal.

I like the vinyasa moves in the yoga routine. I think those do have some serious value. I usually turn it off when they get to the toe grab or whatever early in the balance poses. As for the pullups/bands, I am reaching the point where I need to start doing actual pullups or I need to get the 50 pound bands. I am doing about 30-40 reps with a 30 pound band from about as far away from the door as I feel comfortable getting (plus, my body weight ends up getting pulled back towards the door anyways). Unfortunately, the bar is not an option for me as my doorways are too wide. We do have a gym in the building, but I don't recall if their is a bar in there or not. I guess it is possible to do some real pullups in there. I am excited to start some of the other routines next week. And 22 days in, the results are pretty incredible. Reddy, I take it this is your second time through?
  22. QUOTE (Felix @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 10:33 PM) I'm currently rewatching Deadwood. It's easy to forget how great McShane is in it, but his character really makes the show. I don't mind Olyphant much, but it's clear that his character doesn't even compare to Swearengen. Also, it amazes me how underrated Deadwood is. Such a fantastic series. I couldn't agree more. I think I might have to do some ebay hunting tonight...
  23. QUOTE (Felix @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 09:34 PM) Al Swearengen from Deadwood (also one of the all-time best characters from any show) Oh man, great one there. Love Ian McShane and that character. The Sheriff in Deadwood, Seth Bullock, also would qualify I suppose. I don't care for Timothy Olyphant nearly as much as McShane.
  24. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 08:51 PM) \ Moving across the street in NY is a lot easier than leaving a Dome and adjusting your approach to a totally different outdoor environment. I agree, but it's not like they have never played baseball outdoors before.
  25. QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 08:25 PM) Hey! Not that many Sox fans are from the South. Very nice, well played.
