  1. I'm assuming this is not official yet?
  2. Sure seems like he deserves it...
  3. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 10:34 AM) If the abortion becomes complicated and requires a hospital stay, I wonder how quick Doctors will be to ask the parents to pay the bill. Let's be fair, if we want kids to make these decisions without telling their parents, then parents should not be held responsible for their children after that age (15 or whatever age we determine they can make decisions). So you mean to tell me that having a child/giving birth should not be distinguished from any other form of medical care or surgery? Many people in this thread have used the medical care/procedure example to argue against a child deserving the opportunity to make the decision to have an abortion in secret. While an abortion may indeed fall under the umbrella of a "medical procedure" because it is a task completed by doctors and it takes place in a medical facility, let's not pretend as if this is the same thing. It simply isn't.
  4. Quite the opposite - pure laziness and/or oversight on his part...he is in violation of the law for failing to return it to me within 30 days.
  5. Delmon Young was the biggest they have brought in recently. Of course, at the time they traded for him, he was making peanuts.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 07:38 PM) Pods is not going to be getting a contract for $5 million a year, let alone for two years of it. He might get 5 mil for two years total. I think you are underestimating his value. I will say that at this point, if he is willing to sign for 2/$5, he will be re-signed by us soon.
  7. My landlord is late returning my security deposit- shall I sue?
  8. If they refused to pitch Lee on 3 days rest, they sure as hell aren't going to pitch him on 2. They had to have considered this scenario at the time they made their decision, and realized if this were to occur, it was a decision they would have to live with.
  9. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 07:58 PM) lol, that's ridiculous. I can't believe people would actually rather have Pods than Damon, that's insane. The overwhelming majority of people seem to understand Damon would be an upgrade, myself included. The question is, at what cost. If Pods was available at 2/$10m, and Damon at 2/$20m, which would you rather have?
  10. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 05:02 PM) That's because metrics aren't perfect. Nobody really claims that they are the truth all the time. I will say that they are true most of the time, but there are definitely exceptions. Pods might be one of them. Here or there, you might see a guy you don't think of as good end up having really good defensive numbers. Sabermetrics are more useful when evaluating players of another team. Mostly because you don't see those players very often. When you see the same guy 150 times a year, you get to know him a lot better than what the stats can tell you. Of course, your eyes can still lie and you can have some weird man crush towards some certain player that can make you extremely biased. One of the most important parts of Sabermetrics is trying to remove the subjectivity of player evaluation. Just because Carlos Gomez always kicks our ass doesn't make him a good player. Just because Hawk loves Gomez doesn't make him Ricky Henderson. No, I understand that. I've just had a continuing issue with the irrational and intense dislike brought on Scottie here, mostly by proponents of advanced metrics. And even when the guy improves using the very criteria those people used to label him as a bad defender, they dismiss that criteria and revert to the old criteria they said was so inadequate in the first place - the eye test. Personally, I thought Podsednik had a decent year in the field. He'll never be Brian Anderson or Ryan Sweeney defensively, but he appeared to have an average, even slightly above average year defensively to my eye.
  11. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 04:17 PM) Pods is actually decent overall in most metrics. He was actually one of the top LFs back in 05 according to the Fielding Bible. He was a barely below average fielder last year, including center field, which I found quite surprising. But then again, when you watch a guy for 150 games and get to know his tendencies, that's actually more accurate than what metrics do tell you. Metrics state whether or not the player made the out or not, it doesn't tell you how he made the out or how easy or difficult it was for him. For Pods, every out is difficult. They all count the same though. Seems funny to me when proponents of advanced metrics revert to the "eye test" when their data fails to back up their opinion. And this is nothing personal towards you, just in general.
  12. Happy Birthday, my man. Enjoy your day (and then get RIGHT BACK to covering our minor leaguers tomorrow!).
  13. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 02:24 PM) A look at Damon's numbers this year basically says that New Yankee Stadium helped him get more home runs and doubles... His LD% went down by 6%, resulting in a slightly lower average, his FB% went up by nearly 8% and he had a career high in HR/FB with a 12.6%. It was clear that he realized he only needs to hit some pop ups deep enough to right to get them out. Take him out to the Cell and you won't see the .490 SLG% that he put up this year. But, anyway you put it, he's an upgrade over Pods. Although I don't know if he's going to be worth it for the money we're going to have to dish out for him. Oh yeah, he does suck on defense. In fact, UZR says he sucks a lot more than Pods. He's getting near Jermaine Dye bad. Didn't Pods actually have a decent year defensively this year by most metrics?
  14. He is an upgrade, but probably more of an upgrade along the lines of his road splits of .284/.349/.446 because he won't be aided by the short Yankee porch in right.
  15. QUOTE (balfanman @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 12:03 PM) http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/chi-091102-cubs-white-sox-afl,0,4709685.story I thought that this article in the Tribune had some good information. My question is (from someone who has never seen him play) "How close to the majors is Jordan Danks?" Maybe his wrist injury held him back quite a bit last season. Balfan, the above link doesn't work. Can you try and fix it?
  16. QUOTE (T R U @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 04:38 AM) I have a poster of myself hanging over my bed, seriously. And you're not even ARod!
  17. The key is to grow up at some point...which it appears he is now, with the help of Ms. Hudson. Seriously, I don't think I could hang s*** like that above my bed, but how cool would it be to have yourself painted as a centaur!
  18. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 12:10 AM) I don't understand this post at all. He's just saying he doesn't feel like Philly shares the typical "David" status of a team playing the Yankees because the Phillies are, after all, the defending champs.
  19. Some good discussion in this thread. I agree with Balta, it seems hypocritical to treat minors as adults if they commit certain crimes but as minors when they wish to prevent themselves from giving birth. I really have a difficult time with those who think a 17 year old is not wise enough to make the decision as to whether or not they can raise a child, but is somehow capable, on the other hand, of raising said child.
  20. Hah, I think it's great. If I played baseball as well as he does, made the kind of cash he does, and could attract the women he does, I would probably do some pretty weird s*** too.
  21. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 02:31 AM) If the vets are hitting then they can b**** about vocal leadership all they want. If they're not hitting, STFU. Ozzie should hang a big sign in the clubhouse that says "Play Well or STFU." I agree in some ways about blaming the season on the lack of talent out there (and also the learning experiences the young guys went through) but there was still quite a bit of talent out there offensively. Watching Paulie, Jermaine, Thome, AJ, etc. hand their starters losses and no decisions after great outings because they couldn't get a hit off a bunch of rookies and 6th starters was pathetic. Linebrink was garbage in the second half and he has all kinds of talent as a reliever. They still had enough talent to take 87 games in a bad division IMO. Yeah, I don't think you can really blame the talent factor when you see what the Twins got by on. We have consistently had more talent on our team, but we simply fail to execute. The Twins execute. The Tigers executed this year. We did not. At some point, the GM has to start looking at the failure to execute and go out and get players that will, and I think that is exactly what Kenny and Co. are doing right now. Hopefully they don't go overboard and bring in a bunch of Nick Punto's, but 1 or 2 of them isn't necessarily bad. This team needs some changes. Hopefully, some will be made.
  22. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 03:17 PM) I meant that Manny and Ortiz weren't vilified as brutally as A-Rod. Manny took a 50 game suspension. He paid his price. Manny will never take as much heat from the fans, simply because we all know he is already nuts. It's kind of like trying to scream at a small child. If you know it's not really getting through to them, why bother?
  23. I think there is a fair chance they may deal Uggla and move Coghlan to 2b.
  24. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 1, 2009 -> 11:24 PM) I guess Kate Hudson was the magic medicine to that. Oh man, I just noticed your signature...that one hurts...
