QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 05:05 PM) I would guess KW would make any such PK or similar deal contingent on the Adrian deal, a true 3 team trade... now can those be submitted to MLB as 3 teams, or are they submitted as 2 separate trades? I think either way. Probably easiest to just move PK first, keeping the Padres in the loop, then do the deal with the Padres afterwards.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 03:11 PM) Why don't we trade Paulie for pieces that could facilitate a trade for A-Gone? Because most of us seem to think we couldn't get any pieces for Paulie. Maybe 1 piece, but not anything that is going to be much more than the 4th or 5th piece of a deal.

The Tigers' wild spending is really catching up to them finally. They are making some of their more attractive players available in Edwin Jackson and Curtis Granderson. They are also possibly going to lose the services of Fernando Rodney. Polanco is as good as gone. They are even trying to move Gerald Laird. Seems like between Cabrera, Willis, Ordonez, and what they are going to need to pay Verlander, they are in the same boat as a lot of other teams - 75% of their payroll accounted for by a handful of players.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 02:27 PM) The biggest offer he had out there was Baltimore, and he turned them down pretty early. After that it was between us and Anaheim, for what its worth. Yeah, but he'd only have to spend 1 year wherever he goes now, and possibly only 4 months, as he would probably be traded to a contending team (if his was not) at the break anyways. The situation is a little different now.

QUOTE (balfanman @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 03:13 PM) I think that this would work from the perspectives of the teams and I would love to see it. Doesn't Konerko have a no trade clause and doesn't want to go east? He does have a no trade clause. He has said in the past that he would agree to waive it if the team asked him to because it was for the betterment of the team. As for where he would go, I wouldn't think the Mets would be all that bad. New ballpark. A decent club with a high payroll. It's not out of the realm of possibilities that a healthy Mets team would be better than our team. And their manager is Jerry Manual, who PK has played for before. PK is from Providence, Rhode Island, so I don't know if he would mind going back east or not...

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 03:10 PM) Or maybe Clayton Richard went online to bleacherreport.com and found a story detailing how the Sox are in discussions with the Padres on a deal that would send Adrian Gonzalez and Brian Giles in a sign-and-trade to the Sox for Paul Konerko, Dan Hudson, Brian Hynick, Michael Torres, and Batman. Then Richard called Hudson up and told him to look at it, so Hudson checked it out, laughed, called a friend, and by the time the story got to Harry it was a legit deal with Hudson leading the package. Maybe the specifics aren't realistic, but I bet that basic scenario plays out quite often over the course of an offseason. I don't want to include Batman in any deal.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 02:54 PM) Being a guy that had first hand exposure to many of the prospects that could be included in this deal, Clayton Richard, and the other Ex-Sox there, could be excellent sources of information about the minor league system here. Yeah, I didn't think of this. But I guess it could be possible that Dexter Carter called Dan Hudson. Maybe the info got passed as "A former White Sox prospect that was traded to the Padres for Jake Peavy called Dan Hudson to inform him he might be getting dealt to the Padres for Adrian Gonzalez," and Harry or someone else assumed it was Clayton Richard. Harry is a Cubs fan, so I wouldn't put it past him to make that mistake and think it was Clayton Richard... Who knows, just grasping for anything here...

Was checking out the Mets payroll commitments as well. They are looking to unload Castillo, who does pretty much nothing for us and has a brutal contract. They are looking for bats though, potentially at 1b, as they plan to see if Delgado is healthy in winter ball this year. I wonder if they might be interested in some sort of Konerko for Mike Pelfrey swap. He evidently has a club option for 2010, but I can't find the figure on it. Just trying to find some salary relief here...anyone else have any ideas?

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 12:01 PM) The framework would just be Konerko for Affeldt, and you could work from there. For the sake of argument, let's say we send Williams over there. Is the difference between Affeldt + Ishikawa and Williams + Konerko worth an added $8M to the payroll to them? It might be, because they have major problems with their offense. If not, we could throw in a decent 'spect or two, doesn't really matter. What would be important to us more than anything would be clearing that $8M while filling one of our holes. No, I see how it works for us. I almost made the same suggestion at the very same time as you. Then I changed my mind because I figured Kal would rip me a new one for suggesting it. I just don't really see SF wanting to give up their best bullpen arm to add PK, unless the pickings get REAL thin and none of these hitters want to sign there because it's where hitters go to die.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 12:54 PM) Balta does make a good point; aside from LaRoche and possibly Branyan there are no other good options as full time 1B on the free agent market unless you want to take a chance with Aubrey Huff or Chad Tracy. Well, they can look at 3b too, and play Sandoval at 1st if need be. Hell, my guess is they would try Dye at 1st before they would take PK.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 12:52 PM) Renteria's contract is one of worst in baseball. He's guaranteed $9.5M with 1 year left on his contract. Yeah, forgot to mention that. He obviously doesn't help us in any way. Pass.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 12:48 PM) I've mentioned this before a couple of times, but if we could get Gonzalez then a Konerko-for-Affeldt swap could make a ton of sense for us. We would shed $8M in such a deal, with Gonzalez taking $4.75, leaving us with $3.25M extra. That extra savings could pay for Jenks in arb, making Affeldt the first lefty out of the pen and keeping Thornton in a setup role, OR we could make Thornton the closer, Affeldt the lefty setup man, bring in a third lefty at the minimum, and then deal Jenks' $7-8M in arb for prospects, which would give us roughly another $10-11M to play with. I saw Affeldt too, and was going to suggest that. Until I looked at Affeldt's numbers. He led the mlb in holds last year and posted a 1.73 ERA. While $4 million is a bit high for a reliever, he's been damn good. Why would they want to give us Affeldt when they could probably sign someone off the FA market for $7-8 million and keep him?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 12:42 PM) I'm with you. I don't see a team really wanting Konerko at 12 million dollars a year, unless we pick up someone else's crappy contract. Was thinking about possibly a deal to San Francisco. They are looking for some bats and Sabean has said they would consider moving Sandoval to third. I was trying to find a bad salary we could take back, but there doesn't appear to be a fit. Their contracts are all pretty fair with the exception of Zito's (really bad) and Rowand's (pretty bad). We don't want any part of those.

QUOTE (qwerty @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 01:51 AM) I tend to believe being given the chance to succeed in the majors, while already on the cusp, far out weighs repeating a level for the sake of ''honing'' ones skill set. Being given the chance to succeed in the majors means they also have the opportunity to struggle. Struggling is not necessarily a bad thing, and in fact, many times it's a good thing, Mistakes are meant to be learned from. There should not be much better of a place than at the major league level, with the most talented and very smartest men around you whenever you are having a problem, or simply want to ask a question. The answer to your question about if he came into the league a couple years later would he be view differently is likely a yes. The general reason why a player is in the league at a younger age the majority of the time is because their skill set is cannot be denied, and they no longer have anything more to prove. Though i feel teahan was the polar opposite and was brought up due to the necessity of a player being needed on the major league rosters. Being brought up because of a necessity very well could have stunted his growth, but then again he put up his best season of his career, by far, in only his second season in the league. Truly, i couldn't tell you what his deal is. Teahan far from lit up the minors, and he was not nearly as highly touted as some are leading others to believe. Being in money ball doesn't mean very much to me. Once more, i hope he hits the s*** out of the ball, also wish he plays some defense that won't hurt us. If you ask me, asking for even one of those two is already asking a good deal, let alone both at once. Interesting stuff. Thanks Qwerty.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 01:41 AM) Unfortunately the Cell probably isn't going to be the best ballpark in terms of striking out I would have thought and putting the ball in play, especially with Walker as the hitting coach. If he can produce what he has in his career at the Cell so far (something like a .825 OPS in 125 AB's or so), I would definitely take that. It's obviously a bit of a small sample size, but it's also large enough to suggest that he does feel very comfortable hitting in our ballpark.

QUOTE (tommy @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 12:33 AM) I find it weird that Kenny actually said 'we've been observing this guy for the last couple of years' is that a standard line of his that comes with every trade? I mean unless there's something we don't know observing him for the last couple of years wouldn't convince me to trade for the guy. It seems as though Kenny keeps his eye on certain guys and doesn't stop going after them. My guess is the Royals saw little need to deal him, as he was a low-cost player that they hoped would eventually reach his potential. It was not until now that Teahan reached a cost financially they did not which to pay which convinced them it was time to part ways.

QUOTE (qwerty @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 12:09 AM) Teahan does already have five seasons under his belt, while in only one of those has his season amounted to much of anything offensively. In 2006 (his best season) he also played 21 less games than in any of his other four seasons, which was 109. Five years time span is a pretty damn good chunk of time to know what you have on your hands. That is not to say he cannot have a good, or even a very good season(s) before his career is over, it's just looking bleaker and bleaker, and time is just ticking for the 28 year old. I pretty much feel what you see is what you are gonna get out of teahan, which i of course would love to witness. Well, this is something I often struggle with in my mind. Teahan is 28, like you said, with 5 years under his belt. Which means he has been a regular player in the major leagues since what, his age 24 season? He's basically been asked to develop on the fly, as he was traded to a team that wanted to see immediate dividends for its trade of Carlos Beltran. Now had Mark been with a team where he was blocked, or that had no need to rush him, and he had not come to the major leagues until he was 26, would he be viewed the same? If he were coming into his third or fourth major league season instead of his 6th, would people give him more of a break? I just wonder how he might have developed had he been put on a slower path, or if coming up at his age did indeed change his potential.

QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Nov 10, 2009 -> 11:54 PM) Not me. He's a below average defender and doesn't hit for the position. Teahen is what he is...an ordinary baseball player. That's no knock on him, he's accomplished far more than I have, but I don't see his addition as a major chunk of championship armor. Well thank goodness for that. Seriously, not to poke fun at you, and this is obviously just your opinion, but there are some who think he still has a chance to fulfill some major potential, including some we must assume that work in the front office for our ballclub. Let's give him a chance before we make the determination...

Well hey hey! I must say, I wholeheartedly agree.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 10, 2009 -> 10:23 PM) Look at the rest of the forum, and we're talking about backup catchers, Sox re-treads on reclamation deals, and committing money to Pods again so we don't have to run Jordan Danks out there everyday. If Harry from ESPN 1000 had a source that said God told Clayton Richard to build an ark and fill it with a male-female pair of every species of animal on the planet, then as long as this scenario ended up bringing us Adrian Gonzalez in some roundabout way, I'd still take the opportunity to get excited. BTW, the base info isn't odd at all. If the Sox make an offer then Hudson is in it, either headlining it or co-headlining it. Well, trust me, I'm with you man. I'm as excited about the possibility as you are. But that just sounds as silly a way for someone to come about this information as I can think of...

QUOTE (GO CHI SOX! @ Nov 10, 2009 -> 10:43 PM) I got this from another board: On the way home today, Harry from ESPN 1000 claimed he had an inside source that stated Clayton Richard called Daniel Hudson today to inform him that he was a key piece in a trade the Padres & Sox were working on, so that the Sox would get Adrian Gonzalez. And I'm pissed that the Bulls got raped on that call. Now this makes it seems a bit less-likely to me. How the hell would Clayton Richard know anything? Would they ask Richard about Hudson because he played with him? Did he even play with him last year? I don't get why they would tell Richard anything...and it seems unlikely to me that the two would have spent enough time together to have forged some sort of friendship. Obviously, I don't know, but it just seems a bit strange to me...

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 10, 2009 -> 07:54 PM) The Sox need to do everything in their power to reunite Hudson and Carter. The Padres have to trade Adrian. If you were in their shoes (looking at a $40M payroll for the foreseeable future), and the Sox made what you thought was the best offer, which would give you more hope for the future... This: C Crap 1B Gonzalez 2B Crap SS Cabrera 3B Crap LF Blanks CF Crap RF Venable/Headley; Latos-Young-Correia-Richard-??? Or this: C Flowers 1B Blanks 2B Retherford SS Cabrera 3B Viciedo LF Headley CF Danks RF Venable; Latos-Hudson-Young-Correia-Richard My surprise isn't that the Padres may be looking to move Adrian. My surprise was that Kenny is going after him. Maybe not surprise as much as excitement, actually...

QUOTE (NIUSox @ Nov 10, 2009 -> 06:33 PM) Right before they went off the air today on the Afternoon Saloon, Harry said that he heard from a source close to the Sox that Hudson is the centerpiece to a possible deal for Gonzalez. FWIW Whoa! You serious, Clark?
