  1. QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 05:52 PM) Nix Error Runs above average -1.1 Getz Error runs above average -.9 The error difference isn't even close to the range difference. Show me Nix's numbers for the past month. You'll notice I keep mentioning his play over the LAST MONTH.
  2. QUOTE (League @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 05:38 PM) The original reason Nix was on the team was due to his defensive prowess. Nix has had amazing UZR numbers, scoring a 5.0 on RngR, 4.7 on UZR and 15.8 on UZR/150 at second. Getz has been below average: -2.3 RngR, -2.8 UZR, -3.3 UZR/150 And I appreciate his extreme range. However, he has been botching routine plays with regularity lately, which sort of negates his defensive prowess, wouldn't you agree? And I agree that one of the reasons he made the team was because of his defensive skills. If you look at where this discussion started, you'll see I stated over the past month or so, that he has not been the player he was in the first half.
  3. QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 05:15 PM) His 2B isn't solid, it's below average, and I think Nix's LH/RH splits will even out over time. Even out? Seriously? Nix has a .951 OPS against lefties and a .650 OPS against righties. That's an extraordinarily large difference - not usually something that "evens out over time." As for your opinions regarding the two of them defensively, I guess we'll just agree to disagree.

QUOTE (son of a rude @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 02:47 PM) brookfield zoo i live 5 minutes from there and went to the highschool next to it. i miss RB highschool Where do you go to school?
  5. QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 04:43 PM) Getz does not play better defense, and If the OPS is that close, Nix should be getting most of the PA's imo, because Getz is a utility man at best, and Nix could hit 25 homers a year, while playing very good 2B. Honestly, Nix has been brutal defensively over the past month. Not sure if that is a fair sample size, but he hasn't looked like the guy he was in the first half of the season defensively. Secondly, Nix very well may hit you 25 home runs a year, but he'll hit them almost all against lefties, whom he has a stunning .951 OPS against. You really aren't losing much at all by sitting him against righties entirely. Meanwhile, Getz has stolen 21 of 23 bases this year, plays a solid second base, and provides better offense against righties. Why not take that chance to play him?
  6. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 04:38 PM) I don't have anything against Chris Getz. For a team whose baseball IQ and will to win is constantly questioned, I find it odd that anyone would complain about Getzy. Would I like a better player? Sure. But I don't think we have one, so Getz it is. And furthermore, I have to say that I LOVE this lineup against Byrd. Byrd's junk always seems to catch our fence-swinging sluggers off guard, so this time let's try to put the bat on the baseball and force the issue instead. BTW I heard through the grapevine that Sweaty Freddy hasn't drained his balls in weeks, so expect them to drag on the mound tonight. I'm not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing for us?
  7. QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 04:30 PM) Nix>Getz, and I don't think it's even close. Nix is better against lefties. Against righties, he's putting up a .650 OPS. Not that Getz's .675 is all that more impressive, but considering he plays better defense and is a better baserunner, I'd rather have him in there when we face righties.
  8. QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 04:22 PM) I wish they'd quit wasting time with Getz, but whatever. He's not Chase Utley, but honestly, there isn't a replacement. Sure, we can move Beckham and Alexei, but to put who at 3rd? Fields? Why go through the trouble of moving two guys at this point for a possible upgrade of Fields over Getz? It's just not worth it, especially considering how poorly our defense has played.
  9. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 03:29 PM) I was thinking about what I would do, klondike bar style, for a 20 game win streak right about now, ala 03 athletics, or those silly rockies. Now, I'm about to move to Brazil, which has a certain reputation for a certain set of videos. No guarantees, but, if we make a big run. Check your youtube. We are also going to do a pig roast, I'll eat the eye ball and rectum. I've seen it done on Bizarre foods. You're moving to Brazil? Not to derail the thread, but what are you moving there for? How exciting!
  10. QUOTE (TitoMB345 @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 01:58 PM) I dunno, there's usually a LOT of Red Sawks fans at the Cell whenever they come to town. I wouldn't be surprised to not hear many boos for them. My guess is the Red Sox contingent will be louder than the White Sox one.
  11. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 12:14 PM) First time poster here, and thanks to everyone at this forum for providing some very lively and entertaining analysis lo these many years! As for Mr. Rios, I'm not going to focus too much on what he's done (or not done) thus far with the White Sox, nor am I going to dwell on his offensive trends over the past few years. No, for me, as we cast our eye forward a bit, if we can pencil this guy into the centerfield slot for the next few years and get Gold Glove "caliber-like" defense from him, along with 20+ homers and 30+ stolen bases, I'll be quite satisfied. That level of production is pretty much where his game is at the moment, and if he happens to tap into his long-proclaimed "potential" and becomes, say, a 30/40 type of player, even better. But I'll be happy with his level of production of the past couple of years, even if we're overpaying for it a bit. Bottom line is I'm certain there will be other more pressing needs during the next few years other than Rios that will require more attention. Great post. Welcome aboard!

    Big Weekend Plans

Oh, how jealous I am of all of you....especially son of a rude...the college greek life is oh so much fun... I, on the other hand, have to work all weekend. And not only do I just have to work, I have to work nights this weekend. Tonight, tomorrow night, Sunday night, and Monday night. I guess I cannot complain too much though...I have been off for the last two weeks... Here's to all of you having a great Labor Day Weekend!
  13. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 11:58 AM) All in all, Rios was not an answer, shows that, day in and out, and now we're paying him as much as PK. So you've already decided he will never put up good numbers again, eh?
  14. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 11:16 AM) This will be the first time in MLB history that a team will win its last 29 straight. I just can't wait for Sept 25th as we beat the Tigers for win # 21 in a row and the Oakland A's 20 game streak in 02' is exposed for the child's play that it is...
  15. I think it's pretty clear. If Rios hits anywhere near what he is capable of hitting (.850 OPS) and steals some bases, he's easily worth what he is paid. If he hits like he has this year, he is not. It's that simple. All we can do is hope he comes back next year and hits, continues to play good defense, and runs the bases well for us. If he can do those things, he'll be the least of our worries going forward.
  16. How many years have you folks watched the Green Bay Packers when Brett Favre was in his prime? Do you remember how many receivers he made better by just being an actual QB? I think that one of the symptoms of not having experienced a talented QB is also not witnessing good WR play. The two tend to go hand-in-hand. My guess is Cutler is going to distribute the ball well, with Olsen, Forte, Hester, Clark, and Earl Bennett making up a fairly formidable receiving corps. As others have said, the problem is not going to be the offense, but possibly the defense. But I also agree that having a competent offense is going to make our defense much stronger as well. I see 11-5 and a run deep into the playoffs.
  17. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 03:41 PM) Hope nobody got hurt there - but I sure do enjoy watching the wheels fall off a team that isn't the White Sox for a change. He is really a pest. He lifted his leg to take out Theriot. I know it's probably fair slide (you shouldn't be raising those spikes though), but sometimes you gotta consider the possibility of injuring someone rather than making a play a bit more difficult.
  18. QUOTE (son of a rude @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 03:01 PM) Had class during the first part of the game. Is this start a product of a bad cubs offense or is torres pitching really well today? I see he has no walks. That makes me think its the latter. He's been sharp, but it helps that the umpire is calling a big zone and the wind is blowing in today.
  19. It's a real shame Dweezy cannot hit for s***. He's a heck of an outfielder.
  20. QUOTE (zenryan @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 02:53 PM) Its sad that (1) Pods is one of our better hitters and (2) he's always up with 2 outs and no one on. Gotta love that production from the bottom third. And if you remember, about 5 weeks ago when we were actually playing well, we were getting great production out of the bottom of our order. I think it may be time to switch back Alexei and Gordo in the lineup.
  21. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 02:53 PM) Another quick and easy inning for Dempster. Throws meatballs, but we cant hit it. I don't agree with that. His ball is moving all over the place. Plus he is getting both a wide and a high plate. Couple that with the wind blowing in today and it's a pitcher's day out there.
  22. QUOTE (PeavyTime @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 02:43 PM) I love how Bradley refuses to throw the ball in the stands. He hates the fans and the fans hate him. That probably has something to do with the fact that he threw it into the stands against the Twins with only 2 outs.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 02:29 PM) So when did Gordo quit trying to drive the ball the other way? That was what made him so effective. When they stopped throwing the ball over the outside of the plate and started coming in on him. He finally adjusted and has been hammering that pitch over the last few games, but now he is not even looking to hit that right-center gap anymore. He needs to keep both pitches in mind, and as Rock said, lay off that damn high heat.
  24. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 02:04 PM) Its all about location and movement, and he's showing he's good at both right now. Yeah, he has thrown some really nice breaking ball thus far...
