QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 12:30 AM) I'll be getting both. Man, I almost pulled the trigger earlier. An away Beckham jersey and a black Peavy jersey. Comes out to like $370 or so with shipping. I am trying to be responsible, but I live in Vegas...it's how I represent my boys!

Would Joe Mauer be worth going after as a FA in 2010?
iamshack replied to chisoxfan09's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 11:08 PM) The guy is one of the best OBP machines in MLB and is also I think in the top 3 as a backstop defensively. If it even gets this far I think he will wind up making 15-18 million per year as the best catcher on the market. He would round out the lineup for the net 5 years. Too early but what the heck. I can't see them ever letting him go. He is THE Minnesota Twins. Hometown kid, developed by the organization. I can't imagine he is going anywhere unless he just gets insanely greedy and they can't pay him. But if there is anyone the Twins will overpay to keep, it is Mauer. -
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 10:29 PM) She must read/post on this board, because I have never seen "Slayer" used as a nickname for Beckham except around here. Now that we have that out in the open, God love Gordon because he's going to be a great player and is already perhaps the best interview on our team, but when it comes to his response to the Slayer question, he's full of s***. Hah, I agree. He was just blowing sunshine up her ass because he wanted to bed her.

QUOTE (rockren @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 10:14 PM) Ozzie has already been quoted as saying Beckham will be our 3B for a very long time. Lex will stay at SS with Getz at 2B. I hope this is just Ozzie being Ozzie. It seems like a shame to me to waste Gordon's ability at third when he could be one of the top 3-4 offensive 2b in baseball (if not better).

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 10:27 PM) Numerous guys on this board have offered to do more than that. Not while in the capacities of their professions!

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 10:25 PM) I've gotten independent confirmation from a friend of his family that he is a ladies man. And, he is well rumored to have "closed the deal" with Shanisty Myers here in Birmingham. I'm sure he is a ladies man - he's a stud athlete and very intelligent and articulate. A good looking kid. But was he honestly "slayer"? And is Shanisty Myers the girl from the news station?
-
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 10:23 PM) "To be honest, I'm a little disappointed." Yeah! WTF?
-
How about the chick saying she was disappointed that he wouldn't admit that was his nickname? I think she wanted to take him into the back of the clubhouse and have his children...
-
At the same time, he is going to run into his usual problem - pitch count. Guy has a 1 hitter through 5 innings, and yet, he has thrown 81 pitches already. That was always my problem with him.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 10:00 PM) I don't think of him as an above average offensive player yet. With his speed, he should be. If he can post a .340 OBP, he could be very valuable. He's not an above average player by any means. On the other hand, he happens to offer certain attributes that are very valuable to our club because of the makeup of the rest of our players (the fact that they are not like him). He works now, since we have no one better. But I am not sure anyone would feel badly about him becoming a utility player had we traded for Scott Rolen and moved Beckham to 2b.
-
QUOTE (Jeremy @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 09:39 PM) No, more than that but you guys are missing the point. It's not that Fields proved he belonged as a reserve, it's that if Getz rebounded when given some more time to get it together, then Fields might have also. Indeed, he may have. Unfortunately for Josh, he plays a position where others are far superior to him. While I would love to see Beckham ultimately move to 2nd, even if it means Getz gets displaced from the everyday lineup, the makeup of our current team dictates that Beckham plays 3rd and Getz/Nix platoon at 2b. And the point remains: Josh was given plenty of opportunities and did not show either the ability or the willingness to shorten his swing so he could get to a mediocre major league fastball. That just does not bode well for his major league career, or any team he gets regular at bats with.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 09:32 PM) What about the opportunity he was given BEFORE Beckham was called up? The reason the playing time was taken away from him was because he couldnt hit a 90 MPH fastball. That's the thing - most of the more vocal people on this board don't even want Beckham to play 3b - because he is such a more valuable player at 2b. But compared to what Josh has done, Beckham looks like the second coming of George Brett right now. There should be little sympathy for Josh Fields right now.
-
QUOTE (Jeremy @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 09:25 PM) Funny, I guess we'll never know what Fields would have done had he been given the opportunity to continuing playing every day and make some adjustments. Josh managed to post a ~ .800 OPS with sporadic playing time after Beckham was called up. In what, 16 AB's?
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 08:04 PM) Hopefully not the same thing you did. At least not right when they saw him. Hah, that gave me a chuckle. I kind of thought the comment you quoted was a bit peculiar, but I figured I would let it slide. In other news, should I get a Beckham # 15 jersey or a Peavy # 44 jersey? Or both? What's a fan to do?
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 08:15 PM) I prefer Nix out there. He actually takes a ball (gasp! sometimes more than one per at bat, gasp!), he doesn't swing the for fences every time (gasp!) and with Getz and Pods we have a team that can run, run, run. We lose Alexei's crazy strong arm at SS, but I don't think Nix makes the X number of errors Alexei is going to make, so to me, that's a wash. What say you? Crazy.
-
Beckham is a doubles machine. AJ is red-hot. Good game by Scottie, 4 RBI is not something he must have accomplished much in his career. Good patience at the plate by Nix. Solid game by Getz. Good start by Danksy. Let's finish 'em tomorrow!

Bally's casino does a mini version of the show and I actually was called up to be a contestant. I didn't realize the prizes were as s***ty as they were, so when they brought out a watch I assumed it was a nice one like on the regular show. I bid $599 and the piece of crap was only $239 or something. What a piece of crap watch it must have been if it was only $239 according to the Price is Right. I still take s*** for that from my roommates.

Sox Acquire Jake Peavy for Richard, Poreda, Russell, Carter

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 01:45 AM) Until Peavy blows out his elbow, misses 18 months and we all say it was the worst trade of his tenure, lol....when the Sox couldn't find a fifth starter down the stretch in a very winnable division and Peavy is unable to come back. Let's hope we never have to read a thread about that eventuality. Jesus, I am tempted to delete this post just out of the sake of principality! -

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 12:50 AM) and the counter to that of course is the old adage, "nice guys finish last." But i'm not suggesting that here - but I do think there's a chance he could've gotten him for less. Who knows. Yeah, maybe. And maybe Kenny makes a run at Adrian Gonzalez in two years and Towers remembers this deal... -

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 01:37 AM) Good point. And I think that point is made in that Rosenthal article just posted, in which Towers said "To me, Kenny is one of the best GMs to work with on trades. He knows what he wants." There's no reason Towers had to say that, so you know he really does feel that way. I've seen comments like that across the board. Most GM's seem to think he is a fair guy. That is evidenced by the fact that he has made more trades since his tenure began than any other GM in the game. -

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 01:27 AM) I think DeLuca makes a good point: Yeah, but you don't get very far by attempting to rape other organizations all the time (although Theo Epstein might disagree). If you are fair and trustworthy, which I think Kenny tries to be, I think you'll be a lot better off in the long run. -

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 12:48 AM) Rosenthal wrote a great article about this trade. Here are some highlights "If it's not my all-time favorite trade, it's close. It might not be a good trade, though I suspect it is. But for sheer audacity and shock value, how can anyone not like what White Sox general manager Ken Williams pulled off Friday? "Unreal," one general manager said of the Jake Peavy trade. "No question, it's a very high-risk move. You've got to have great intestinal fortitude to do it." Another exec was even more blunt in describing his admiration for Williams. "Biggest balls in the game," he said." http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9879004...with-Peavy-deal That is an awesome article...some great insight on how the organization works. DICK ALLEN, please READ the above article!
