QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 10:25 AM) Ken Rosenthal still thinks of the Sox want Halladay they will have to part with Beckham. The Phillies have said they are not giving up highly touted prospects. The Angels don't have what the Jays want. IMO its between the White Sox, Dodgers and Yankees. If i'm KW I would make 2 offers and if JP rejects them- time to move on.. . 1) Poreda, Richards, 2 mid level prospects for Halladay 2) Ramirez, Poreda, Richards, Fields, Shelby for Halladay and Rolen (with Rolens contract partially payed for) I don't think you can move Ramirez...his contract is too valuable... The Jays have not gotten any offers that have blown them away, or else you would have heard about them by now...I would balk at moving any starter from the MLB roster...

I just don't care much to even entertain the notion of trading Alexei. He has an EXTREMELY favorable contract for being an impact offensive middle infielder. Secondly, the thought of trading Alexei so we can avoid taking Chris Getz/Jason Nix out of the lineup seems like backwards thinking to me. In my mind you can't use any of your starting mlb roster to acquire Halladay. And if that is not good enough, so be it.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 09:59 PM) If that's true, then there's no serious mandate for them to cut salary and it's time to just start closing threads. What do you expect him to ask for? Of course he is going to shoot for the stars. Just gives him more room to come down.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 11:50 PM) Does anyone else have an impending sense of… not doom… just… change? I honestly think something relativity dramatic is going to happen to this team, sooner rather than later. I sure hope not. I really think this club has a chance to be one of the more complete ballclubs we've had in a long time. We have the usual mashers in Dye, Thome and Paulie, and even more so if CQ can come back relatively healthy. We have some slap hitters in Podsednik and Getz, and some line drive hitters in Alexei, AJ, and Beckham. I really like how the offense in balanced. The pitching staff, despite our recent troubles, is fairly loaded with Danks, Floyd, Mark and Jose. The bullpen is close to as solid as any in the league. I really think they just need some more time. To me, this club is head and shoulders above where it was 2 months ago, and I'd like to see this talent play out a bit. Sure, the role players may change a bit, and we may see a difference-maker added, but I honestly really like where this club is headed. Give them more time.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 04:01 PM) If the Sox lose ground after the homestand and the series at Detroit, KW has got to go into sell mode. You know he's not going to do that... This team is good enough to win this division.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 04:05 PM) If Cooper can turn Pena in to a solid 7th/8th inning guy, then you could deal without both Jenks and Dotel...especially if you can pull DJ back together. If Pena and Carrasco continue to struggle though, then that bullpen is decidedly average. It's a chance I would be willing to take to get Halladay. Between Doc, Buehrle, Floyd, Danks, and Contreras, we shouldn't need more than 2 relief arms on most nights...
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 04:00 PM) Yeah, the bullpen without Jenks could be scary unless Linebrink avoids his usual 2nd half meltdown. I think it would be ok. Between Dotel, Thornton, Pena, Linebrink, Carrasco....I think that still matches up fairly well against most clubs....IF you could get Thornton to become a solid closer...

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 03:58 PM) A bullpen minus Jenks isn't as impressive. Obviously. But do you want 100 innings of Halladay or 35 innings of Jenks? And next year, do you want 230 innings of Halladay or 75 innings of Jenks? Especially considering we'll have to really start paying Bobby soon anyways?

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 03:52 PM) Ugh, Halladay just scares me due to only one year left on his deal. It's highly unlikely JR and KW could match huge offers he'd get after 2010. For the amount we'd have to give up, one year and a few months of Roy just isn't worth it. Well, I don't mind making a run at it this year as long as Gordo stays. If it means we deal Jenks, then so be it. We'd be one hell of a ballclub with that rotation, this bullpen, and this offense...

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 03:48 PM) He had a plane to catch. Yeah, saw that in your last post that said "He had a plane to AZ to catch." In other notes, I wouldn't mind dealing Jenks to get the prospects to get Halladay, but I want no part of any trade that includes Gordo...

QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 03:44 PM) Been flipping on and off, did Stone leave? Stoney appears to be sick. You can hear him coughing in the background from time to time. I think he finally gave up considering the game is out of hand...

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 03:31 PM) Wow Beckham...I defend him more than anyone, but it might be time to try Getz/Nix at 3rd and put him at 2nd. I was just thinking the same thing....I think he'll be ok at 3b if they decide to keep him there...but a guy with so much offensive ability...I don't want him THIS concerned about his fielding. I'm all for moving him to 2b if Getz or Nix can handle 3b...do either of them have the arm? Or is it worth going out and getting a Mark Teahan or a Scott Rolen and using Getz and Nix as utility players (and DFA'ing Wise)?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 08:26 PM) Educate me please. Would all teams in baseball let the guy steal third uncontested? Or just the Sox? Not uncontested, but that stolen base had little chance of making much of a difference. Barring a hit that would have been an absolute rocket right at an outfielder, the baserunner was going to score on almost every other base hit.

Only thing I can think of is their individual numbers against Thornton....anyone know what they were?

QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 08:16 PM) Not sure what you have to argue about... It was pretty freakin' obvious that the ump had Danks pitching into a postage stamp strikezone in that first inning. I don't know...watching it on the Twins broadcast, away from the Hawkeroo's utter and complete bias, it seemed like most of those close pitches were indeed balls. The only one I really wanted was the pitch that walked Morneau, but even after a second look, I was ready to concede it was probably a ball. Not to say we couldn't have gotten some of those calls, and that pitches worse than some of those have been called for strikes since, but Johnny did himself no favors, that's for certain.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 08:14 PM) I saw Coomer at a Sox/Cubs game at USCF a couple of years ago, cheering wildly for the Cubs. Well he played for them, didn't he? I remember several years ago when he was on the Cubs during the Crosstown Classic, they followed him with a camera from his house to the park in his minivan, into the park, etc. It was very queer. Needless to say, they guy had a few nice years as a hitter, but his talent for broadcasting isn't so special. He sounds worse than your drunk know-it-all friend in the bar....
-
The Twins have like 17 broadcasters that work their games. Ron Coomer and Roy Smalley add completely useless bits of information from time to time, some retard asks fans lame questions in the stands, and Dick Bremer and Bert Blyleven add decent commentary. Seems like the teams still on the FSN Network like to do this. It is positively obnoxious and pointless. Instead of watching the game, I have to listen to Ron Coomer make uneducated guesses at what our hitters are doing and why they do it.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 07:21 PM) Am I the only one who cringes at the Bacon nickname? Hell, I've stopped calling him Slayer all the time so that we can just stop with nicknames for him. Bacon is just a horrible nickname...I think I'll just start calling him James...

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 02:27 PM) The problems are 2-fold. First, that's not the only map that matters; this map is also very important. You don't just need transmission capacity, you need places where the wind blows with some regularity. The other key detail with wind in particular is that you need the grid to be smarter, you need demand to actually be able to adapt to changing amounts of production given the fact that wind is not constantly blowing at the same rate. This requires a grid that is able to handle variable loads without crashing and which is intelligent enough to allow for pricing of electricity based on scarcity; if there's less power being generated or if the power is being offloaded to a more expensive natural gas fired plant, the price should increase so as to provoke a decrease in utilisation at that time. That also means that households and businesses need to receive the information about the balance between supply and demand. Edit: impressive, you edited your map with the same information I was trying to post. First off, Nuclear power is not the most expensive form of energy. Solar power is ridiculously expensive still. Some $65/hr a MW from our Solar One plant here in Nevada. I'm not sure what the costs are for nuclear, but I can tell you that the biggest player in the Northwest, the Bonneville Power Administration, has vast nuclear capacity and doesn't hesitate to run it. My guess is it is somewhere in the $25 MW/hr range. As for your concerns regarding the grid, the problem is that our current grids are simply not required to deal with the volatility of huge wind projects. There are certainly some wind plants operating on the Western Grid, but keep in mind that wind power must be backed by fossil fuel power, so that if the wind generation suddenly varies, the fossil fuel power compensated for the loss. As it stands now, there is basically a "window" which exists in which fossil fuel sources adjust to smaller variations in wind power, and the current grid is able to windstand that. What it cannot withstand, is massive amounts of volatile wind power upsetting the balance of the grid. You summed this up fairly well in your explanation. We can talk about building all the wind plants we can until we are blue in the face. But we need to rebuild our grids before the power system can adequately and reliably handle a significant amount of wind and solar power.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 03:03 AM) I'm still angry we traded Rowand to give this bum the CF job... Thome has added far more to the offense than the difference between Rowand and Anderson, IMHO. I would still make that trade again if presented with the opportunity.
