Sox Acquire Jake Peavy for Richard, Poreda, Russell, Carter
iamshack replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 12:20 AM) There are way too many writers and bloggers and nerds who think they know the most about anything. Prospects are prospects till they prove anything in the pros. Well, I feel for them, because they can't be expected to know every team's entire system. But I would respect them more if they came out and admitted that rather than make s*** up or just copy other writers. Remind me, if I ever get a job writing about professional baseball, to study up other team's message boards to get a feel for which prospects are actually what. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 12:14 AM) Oh... yeah, in that case I'm with you. I've already had to politely lecture a couple of other fans talking about how the Sox got shafted. We gave up a decent, I'd say "fair" package for Peavy, but let's be real here. Clayton Richard has a good chance of having a respectable MLB career, Poreda at least projects highly (whether he reaches that ceiling we can't know yet), but neither of those guys is going to win a Cy Young in their mid 20s. Hell, when Peavy was Richard's age, he actually won a Cy Young FFS. I think Richard was a #5 if he stayed in the AL. He has a great arm, but he didn't control his stuff enough for my liking. I think he would often get in trouble with his pitch counts against patient AL lineups. In the NL, however, he probably has a chance at being a solid #3, especially in Petco. Poreda I never saw enough of to get a solid opinion, but the consensus seems to be he might turn into a solid closer. I guess in a nutshell, this trade seems to work not even so much because of the position the two teams were in talent-wise and financially, but because Richard and Poreda have more value to San Diego than they could ever have for us. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 12:01 AM) ??? That doesn't appear to be the consensus of this board right now. With a couple of exceptions I think most posters acknowledge that we gave up some decent prospects, but we used said prospects to get an ace who is better than any of those players will be. Nobody's been bashing the weakness of the farm system this year because it isn't weak, and the only top prospect we gave up is Poreda. We still have Danks, Viciedo, Hudson, and Flowers. I don't see what you're getting at. Yeah, not talking about our fans....talking about the national media which influences fans of other teams. I have not heard so many glowing reviews of Clayton Richard and Aaron Poreda until this evening... -

What I don't get is that the White Sox always take s*** for the weakness of their farm system. And yet, everytime we trade some of the pieces of that farm system, we get roasted for trading all these talented kids. I don't get how none of them are worth a damn while they are in our system, and yet, the minute we trade them, these kids are making the acquiring team's future so bright. -

From ESPN: "I don't know if they're winners," said one AL exec. "But they're definitely the biggest gamblers." I love it. -

QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 09:49 PM) I am a little curious as to how the budget works out in 2010 / 2011. Dye, Thome and Contreras come off this year, so that's a huge savings ($36 million?)...BUT I can't see this team contending without Dye and Thome next year. Assuming Konerko goes to DH, who plays first? A scrap heaper? Quentin shifts to RF, I get it, but is the rest of the outfield Podsednik and Wise? Unless you think Danks will be ready next year (doubtful), you have to pick up Dye's mutual option and let Thome go. But trading Brandon Allen makes no sense at that point. And Viciedo isn't going to be ready in 2010 like Allen was going to be. If the budget does expand, this is less of an issue... The most likely scenario is Konerko plays 1st, Dye DH's, and a replacement is brought into play one, if not two of the outfield positions. Quentin will be there for sure, my guess is Scottie will be back, and then one of Jordan Danks, or Free Agent A, or Trade Acquisition A, whomever. My guess is they will bring back Dye at a reduced rate and the real $ they will have to play with will be around 8 - 10 Million. Dotel will come off the books too. Then PK comes off in 2010. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 05:08 PM) It does show that they weren't being straight when they said they were right up against the budget, so if Peavy said no again and they did nothing, cheap would have be appropriate. How many times does it have to be pointed out that Kenny doesn't know how they're going to make it work financially with Peavy? He basically admitted they are just going to wing it. They are making an exception to acquire a very special player. Shouldn't that be a good thing? They try to operate the team like a successful business organization. They try to stay in the black. But they are willing to make additional expenditures which make concept less certain in order to win. Why do you always view that in a negative light? -

QUOTE (Special K @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 03:38 PM) Detroit felt cool for about a second after they got Washburn, and then Kenny rammed this down their throat. I will never doubt KW again Post of the month. -

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 03:28 PM) at this point Peavy had to sign off, there would be zero to report if he hasn't Confirmed. I am sure Jake has agreed already. They wouldn't do this twice. -

QUOTE (3 BeWareTheNewSox 5 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 03:25 PM) WTF? Isn't he out for the year? He had his protective boot taken off a few weeks ago. Could come back in late August is my guess... -
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 01:56 PM) Couldn't agree more. Ricciardi's going to look like a clown when he makes a deal next year at this time for far less. I honestly think he believed he was going to play hardball and someone would blink and make a deal. He is probably of the belief that he can trade him next offseason for the same packages he is being offered now. And he just may. But I don't think it is a gamble worth taking, considering their current position.
-
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 01:53 PM) Sorry, but I've seen plenty of Josh Fields. I'm seriously hoping this is his last day in a Sox uni. Don't really care what we get, as with BA, just want to move on. Trust me, I am no Fields fan either. But I don't think we need all three of Thome/Konerko/Dye next year, and so I am just suggesting we jettison the one who can bring us some kind of return back. And I don't believe it can be Thome, because I really think we need a lefthanded bat in that lineup... It's just the best way I can think of to optimize our current resources.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 01:31 PM) Yep. Believe it or not, Halladay's value is not going to fall very much for a desperate team. Everyone thinks they can win before the season starts. There are far fewer desperate teams in January than in July...
-
QUOTE (3 BeWareTheNewSox 5 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 01:29 PM) I don't think Ricciardi is that screwed. If he doesn't get what he wants he can always make a move in the offseason Teams will be less-motivated to trade half their farm for just 1 season of contention rather than two...

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 01:25 PM) While I don't doubt they texted KW, I'd be absolutely shocked if KW was serious about needing ideas. I'd also be shocked if he doesn't have about 10 balloons in the air right now. The problem is it takes 2 to tango, so while you might have the means to take on salary and might have some prospects to trade, the other guy could always say no. I read somewhere where Toronto wasn't interested in any of the White Sox prospects for Halladay. They wanted Danks and Floyd. Hah, Ricciardi cracks me up. I am so happy he is getting screwed and getting nothing. As for Kenny, I don't know...sometimes I think the guy is more like you and I than we think. It wouldn't shock me if he can't figure this team out either...
-
QUOTE (3 BeWareTheNewSox 5 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 01:22 PM) Not sure if they're kidding, but MLB Network is talking about texting with KW during the break (that he asked for ideas, Harold Reynold just gave a sleeper list and they said 'Here you go Kenny, this is your text back!') Hah, that's great stuff. I don't blame Kenny...I don't really know what the move is here either...

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 01:20 PM) Williams is going to be raped in the media if he doesn't do anything. I'm not saying they'll be right, but considering Detroit and Minnesota made roster additions and we sat twiddling our thumbs, we'll all have to endure a few days of White Sox bashing by the locals. I disagree. The Chicago media is too stupid to even know who to claim we should have acquired.
-
I love it because he is out of the division, but the Red Sox just keep getting better and better....
-
I wish KW would get crazy and find a decent package of prospects for PK. Let Fields play first and see if he can figure it out, and then bring back Thome and Dye for next year. If Fields doesn't show improvement offensively, try and bring in an Adam Dunn or someone else to play first. I know it won't be popular, but Paulie is having a solid year and you may be able to actually get a few solid prospects for him. I have a feeling if we were to win this division it wouldn't be because of the difference between Konerko's production and Fields. But, I know it won't happen.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 12:28 PM) It didn't stop the Red Sox, Angels or White Sox winning when he was around. He is a douchebag, no question, but he is a huge upgrade for them although his glove has slipped this year. Just be thankful the Twins made that trade for Delmon Young. Bartlett and Garza would look very good on the Twins. I heard the Red Sox were looking into getting him as well, and he made it clear he did NOT wish to return to Boston. What player have you ever heard say that, besides maybe a Yankee? Sounds like he causes trouble wherever he goes...
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 07:13 PM) Agreed, but it looks like they're actually willing to spend some money to try and get their team into good position in 3 years. By that time, maybe the Cubs and Cardinals won't be so much more talented than the rest of the division. I really believed in Neal Huntington or whatever his name is, until I saw what he dealt McLouth for...
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 07:09 PM) Why, they had a pretty good day with these trades? They know that they're playing for 2011, and the money they saved in this trade will only help them in their effort to get Sano. They are always playing for 3 years away. That is the problem.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 03:31 PM) I think the playoffs are too big of a crapshoot to just assume that getting a top pitcher is going to clinch you a trip to the World Series. The way I see it is that the Phillies gave up a decent haul for a piece that will help them slightly, but offer no significant upgrade for the rest of the year. On paper the Phillies would look good going into a series against the Giants, however, if paper stood for anything then the Yankees would win it ever year. Looking at this deal In the long-term it does make sense, and stands to benefit both sides. It is a crapshoot...but the prevailing theory seems to be that dominant pitching beats dominant hitting, and that is the best way to succeed in such a crapshoot.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 03:11 PM) Clearly Ozzie wanted to protect Beckham here. You and I must've convinced him...
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 03:17 PM) The Phillies got robbed blind on this one. Ultimately, I’d say it adds about to 2-4 wins this year in a division they were almost assured to win without making a move. I read they are concerned about facing the Giants in the postseason....Lee would help them match-up against a Lincecum/Cain combo...
