2015-2016 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 22, 2015 -> 02:52 PM) Oh....to hog this thread, one other thing I found of note from Lowe's piece. I still say, trade Rose for Russell. Lakers need their "star" to market. I'd do that. But I don't see why the Lakers would. Rose isn't a star anymore.

Judge deciding whether to reveal police shooting video
Not sure that's as egregious as some of the others, but still an unnecessary death. I'm not sure why that cop pulled his gun to begin with being in such close proximity to his partner. He created the fear that Aguilar will grab it during the tussle, which then "justifies" in his mind the need to shoot. The other side of this, of course, is why the hell is this guy resisting so much. At some point people need to learn that cops are going to get the benefit of the doubt in that situation, so why go there? You're not going to win, and the worst case scenario is you creating a situation where the cop feels justified in shooting you out of fear. Stupid all the way around IMO.

2015-2016 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 22, 2015 -> 09:44 AM) ESPN's Zach Lowe has a big piece up today on the Bulls dysfunction, including direct quotes even from Forman, in addition to on the record stuff from a number of players. Counts as a must read. Small Excerpt. Go read the rest. The line about Rose finally being ready, that he just had his preseason, is such bulls***. Preseason is what, 8 games? We're at like 25 right now. I think that's enough games to determine that Rose is never going to be half the player he used to be. edit: the Bulls are officially stuck in NBA purgatory. With Butler they're good enough to make the playoffs every year, but not good enough to win or even get to the Finals. They're stuck with a broke, max player in Rose. All of their remaining pieces are good role players at best. And they have little hope in the draft to improve. They have to rely on FA signings, which has been such a success story the last decade.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 21, 2015 -> 10:06 PM) So, when does GarPax finally get the axe? Afraid to trade young players, sign old vets, hire coaches and then have dysfunction with them despite success. Now they sign their golden boy and this team has gone down the toilet. Not sure how it's their fault when the problem is a lack of energy/effort, not talent. I mean they've made mistakes in the past so they're not immune to criticism, but they're pretty far down the list of problems with this team. Like I said yesterday, problem #1 is Rose. His defense last night was awful. So many blow byes. And then the untimely turnovers. He needs to be benched and I wonder if that's who Butler was indirectly referring to when he said people need to be held accountable.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 21, 2015 -> 05:01 PM) Personally, only way I move Pau is for something that is better for this team long term. It is an asset we might lose after this year (and the way things are going, we will lose him), so we need to not lose that value. I want a larger deal that nets the Bulls Boogie Vlade has already said he's off the table, unfortunately.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 21, 2015 -> 04:58 PM) Okay...so it isn't really "too many bigs" rather than a guy who fits better with our team needs / skillsets. Yes. And i'm not saying that's THE deal to make. I think PG is their biggest problem right now. 2 is all-star quality. 5 is all-star quality. Your 3 and 4's are good enough for a run. It's your 1 that's holding the team back.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 21, 2015 -> 04:45 PM) How does it clear a logjam when you are talking about a return of Zbo? Because I think with Pau you're stuck with the only good lineup being him with Taj. He and Noah are terrible together and he and Niko are really bad defensively and offensively if Niko is worthless with his shot, which is been a frequent problem. Zbo, IMO, is more interchangeable, like Taj. Noah is your true 5, can play 30-35 minutes, and then you play Zbo/Niko at the 4, and Taj at the 5 or 4 where necessary. That gives you the point-center/defensive/energy big (Noah), the stretch 4 (theoretically, in Niko), and then 3 guys that can bang and get rebounds or hit 15 foot jumpshots. Though Portis is more the energy/clean-up guy at this point, but still, interchangeable. I mean it's not some amazing, problem-solving move. But the Bulls have too many bigs and the combos don't work IMO.

And i'm not sure a wing is necessary if McDermott is the future. I'd rather get a better PG than a wing.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 21, 2015 -> 04:35 PM) Moving Pau without getting wing help doesn't make sense to me. It's at best a wash. I agree, but I think it also clears the log jam and allows Noah to be the #1 option at center, with Taj, Niko and Portis rotating in at 4/5 where needed.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 21, 2015 -> 02:18 PM) For you, everything is the most overblown thing ever Fair, but in this case i'm right. What's the big deal? Because he criticized the coach? So what? He's the star of the team. He's earned that right. All the stars do it. And it's not as if he said "Hoiberg sucks, management failed us." He's asking for some accountability on a team that loses to bad teams and looks lethargic 60% of the time. On a related note: I don't get this at all. Niko's too slow to play the 3. If anything McDermott should be starting in Snell's spot. I don't get what Hoiberg is going for here. My line-up would be Rose-Butler-McDermott-Niko-Noah. Let Pau/Taj/Portis feast on 2nd units. As the game progresses, swap Noah/Gasol depending on whether you need offense or defense.

2015 TV Thread
So I regrettably canceled my DirecTV service today. The last few months we haven't really watched much cable. Mostly Netflix and some premium network shows. I watch sports, and that's going to suck not being able to watch those anymore, but it's not worth the $175/month I was spending on it. I'll have to rely on WGN, ch. 26 and some internet feeds for my sports now. Anyone subscribe to SlingTV? I think we're going to try that. $25 bucks/month for some basic cable (espn, tnt, history, etc.) and disney channels seems like a good deal. We'll probably also grab a Hulu subscription, as well as HBO/Showtime for a month here or there to catch up on some shows.

2015 Catch-All thread
I heard a clip of this on the radio this morning. When he starts apologizing and says the other woman is the winner, the tone of his voice is like someone trying to get the crowd riled up, not someone who is sorry about what just happened. He also took a lot of "build the suspense" pauses. On that clip alone it sounded 100% planned.

So after episode 2, I'm more pissed about this guy. So much wasted time/money/resources trying to find him. Also, it's pretty wild she was able to find and interview one of the bad guys that held him.

He said after the game to the ESPN crew that he STILL has double vision, but that he's a "professional" so he can deal with it. I, too, think it's bulls***. Unless it's a very, very minor issue (like haloing or something), he'd see a specialist if it didn't go away after 3 months.

Religion and Gun Attacks
QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Dec 16, 2015 -> 05:21 PM) Pretty tough to get to the shelter that's 30 minutes away if you don't have transportation. Because these women and children are homeless, it's reasonable to assume that at the very least some lack sufficient transportation. Because this is a rural area, it's reasonable to infer that public transportation doesn't service the area. This guy certainly doesn't have to provide shelter to the homeless, and the charity provides an objective benefit (ie, some homeless sheltered is better than no homeless sheltered), but it does illustrate the limitations of the social safety net relying on the whims of religious dogma. He "sent them" to the other shelter though. To me, that means he provided the transportation. At the very least, it's quite a bit different from "barring" them from the place, as if he pushed them outside and then locked the door behind them. It all seems very reasonable to me. It's a motel-like shelter, from the looks of it. The facilities aren't great. It's a rural area so you can infer there's very little money there. There are more men than women. There seems to be an issue of people having sex going on (the whore house was a reference to the fact that he probably doesn't want his shelter to become known as a place to get laid, or to be seen as a place where people can come meet and bang...whether that's due to his religious beliefs or not is beside the point, he runs the place so it's his rules you have to abide by). According to his own words, he "sent" the women away because of the number of men vs. women at the shelter. They were "sent" to another shelter, not left on the street. Again, I have a hard time believing that means he told them about the place 30 minutes away, kicked them out and yelled "good luck!" as he locked the door. He also was quoted as saying that he acknowledged sex takes two people and that he hoped in the future he could upgrade the facility and allow women back. This is all a very different scenario than what SS and that website proposed, which was, in summary: "evil religious guy kicks out poor, helpless women from a shelter because they were tempting men into having sex."

Religion and Gun Attacks
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 16, 2015 -> 04:08 PM) Goddamn women and their whorin', temptin' ways!!! (Psst! It takes TWO people to have sex! And you look like a giant asshole when you blame only the women and throw them out of shelters!) I suppose, but it sounds like an actual sex problem more than a temptation problem. The problem is more easily solved by getting rid of one sex. I agree it's pretty s***ty to throw out women, but it's charity, can't really b**** about getting something for nothing. edit: and it sounds like from this story it was more about numbers than sex: Seems reasonable to me.

NCAA basketball 2015-16 thread
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 16, 2015 -> 03:49 PM) Alvarez could have fired Bo (HAHAHAHAAHAHA). But in all seriousness Bo Ryan is Wisconsin basketball. One day the court may be named after him. Alvarez is screwed no matter what. He isnt going to hire another Bo Ryan, its just not possible. Not to mention I think that many Wisconsin fans trust Bo Ryan more than Alvarez when it comes to basketball. In my opinion Bo Ryan made Wisconsin basketball. If he wants to pick Gard to be his successor, he earned that right. And if the program crashes and burns because of it, at least Wisconsin respected the best coach they ever had. I think most Wisconsin fans are honest with themselves. The last 2 years are more than anyone could have dreamed and Wisconsin had their chances. It probably wont happen again, but that is why those wins meant so much and the losses hurt so bad. I agree with this. Especially since he left the program at a good time. They might not be as good this year or next, but it's not like he had a good run and then sucked for 10 years straight before leaving.
