Another shooting: San Bernadino
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 4, 2015 -> 02:12 PM) Msnbc reporter rifles through shooters' apartment on air. http://gaw.kr/bdT1iL3 Not that this excuses anyone, but why aren't cops blocking entrance to a crime scene?

That was kinda weird. I went to the Irish Fellowship Club luncheon today. Rahm, McCarthy AND Alvarez were there. McCarthy got the loudest applause with a standing ovation.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 4, 2015 -> 10:52 AM) Who are the people that really run this country? The reason gun laws don't change is the NRA membership is active and devoted and will only vote for officials who are very pro-gun. If the people that favored gun control were actually equally as passionate and voted as a bloc you would see a much different situation. They don't though. They just rely on bloomberg's money. I really think the NRA's control is overblown. I think its classic case of polls showing that people overwhelming like the idea of gun control, but when push comes to shove, and proposals are on the table, they don't want to restrict their own use/ownership rights.

Another shooting: San Bernadino
QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Dec 3, 2015 -> 04:03 PM) This shooting has a little bit of everything. Workplace Grievance for sure. From CNN's updated coverage, you get a bit of mixed messages on the "radicalization" link. On one hand it says.. apparently was radicalized and in touch with people being investigated by the FBI for international terrorism, law enforcement officials said Thursday. Then later in the article it says.. Yet Farook himself had talked by phone and on social media with more than one person being investigated for terrorism, law enforcement officials said. The communications were "soft connections" in that they weren't frequent, one law enforcement official said. It had been a few months since Farook's last back-and-forth with these people, who officials said were not considered high priority. So in a nutshell, as of now, he spoke a few times, months ago, with some guys, who may or may not be terrorists. And if they were, they weren't prominent figures. Not sure there's any evidence of that yet. Given the buildup of ammo, the pipe bombs, etc. seems to me this is a terrorist act against the easiest target he could think of. Someplace where he knew the layout, knew the security and knew where people would be.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Dec 3, 2015 -> 11:02 PM) How does Naughty Dog do it? I'm starting to think they are actual wizards or something. This looks insanely good. Can't wait. Got this preordered. I'm pumped. If anyone likes these games, grab the Tomb Raider reboots. I just finished the 2013 one and its great. Combat was really fun. The new one is supposed to be even better. I went a bit crazy on black friday with games I have no time to play. nba 2k16 (so hard), ac: syndicate and the witcher 3. A lot of gaming hours there. Probably take me a year to get through them.

Judge deciding whether to reveal police shooting video
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 3, 2015 -> 05:11 PM) It wouldn't ultimately be their decision though. I'm sure they wouldn't want it released, but they're not the ones that decide. This is Emmanuel trying to cover his own ass at this point...he's in full damage control mode. They all are/were.

Judge deciding whether to reveal police shooting video
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 3, 2015 -> 03:36 PM) The Tribune is going hard after the audio and why it was obscured. I'm very interested in the audio issue. I have an excessive force case right now and we have a dashcam video. Different department, but the EXACT same audio issue. If you crank your speakers up, you can actually hear sirens and some sound (like in the McDonald case), but not much else. It's working, but not working properly.

Judge deciding whether to reveal police shooting video
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 3, 2015 -> 01:47 PM) No, the Chicago PD did not try to cover this up...that's not how such investigations work. This is what Rahm wants people to believe, however. But when evidence is collected, it's handed off to a 3rd party that the CPD has no control over. After such an event occurs, it's handled by outside powers/departments, and people such as the mayor and judges may have some sort of control over what happens, but cops do not. What are you talking about? This is not how it works. The CPD collects all relevant evidence. It keeps said evidence until the states attorney's office decides it's going to indict and charge someone. At some point, the file and evidence is handed over so the SA can prosecute the case. There is no 3rd party that "handles" the case. In certain situations other state/federal agencies may get involved and want to view/test/look over evidence, but generally the police department that has jurisdiction over the crime scene handles the evidence and the "case" up until the time it's handed over to the SA. edit: internal affairs is a subset of CPD. If there's some mass coverup, they'd be in on it too. And they just interview people and review reports. They don't handle evidence.

2015-2016 NBA Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 3, 2015 -> 10:39 AM) I know I'm debbie downer even as the team keeps winning, but man, it's really hard watching your team's backcourt go like 5-32. Pau and McDermott won the game. But when Rose gets "back" he'll be "scary!" (what he actually said). It's been how many games now? And he's still not good.

Another shooting: San Bernadino
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 3, 2015 -> 09:12 AM) Sure maybe, except really good sport hunters tend to use single shot high powered rifles rather than AR-15's with massive clips. By definition very good hunters wont need to repeatedly pull the trigger and a relatively closer range than rifles. They are completely stupid in home defense. You want to limit the ability of bullets to break through drywall into other rooms. The largest gun you would need at home is a shotgun full of buckshot. I don't know a lot about them, but I do know those guns are highly customizable. I doubt hunters use them as machine guns to take down a deer or whatever. I'm with you on home defense. Maybe the theory is if an intruder sees that kind of gun they'd be scared off more than with a shotgun? I dunno. You'd certainly get more shots with that rifle over a shotgun though.

Muslim, new Saudi Arabian bride partner, the weapons/gear... this wasn't your run of the mill "gone postal" shooting. Odd though that if it was pre-planned that he would still go to the office party in the morning.

Another shooting: San Bernadino
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 3, 2015 -> 08:12 AM) Several reports have said the couple returned with "tactical gear and assault rifles." Both of which I dont understand their place in society. Home protection and hunting would be the last places for an assault rifle. I suspect people still use them for hunting, but it's mostly for sport. I'm not a fan, and wouldn't have a problem with a ban on these weapons or at least a really stringent selection process, but I also don't see any difference between these assault weapons and really fancy sports cars. Both serve no real useful purpose, they're for hobbyists, and they both lead to unnecessary death. One to a larger degree than others, obviously.

But they still suck. No offensive threat at the PG spot. They play 4 on 5. Unless they hit shots like in the first half they have no chance

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 1, 2015 -> 08:36 PM) If Police Are Using Reasonable Force, Why Do They Lie About It? You know, that's the first blog post/article I've read on this subject the last few years that's pretty level headed and reasonable. No "cops hate black people," no "cops are just evil killers," no pretending that cops don't have legit reasons to fire and fire quickly, etc. Just pointing out that cops keep inserting themselves into dangerous situations where shooting someone becomes the next seemingly reasonable step.

Judge deciding whether to reveal police shooting video
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 1, 2015 -> 05:17 PM) There's allegedly video of the police tampering with the surveillance video from the Burger King, or at least using the system before 86 minutes mysteriously disappeared. http://www.rawstory.com/2015/12/cops-didnt...aquan-mcdonald/ I thought I read somewhere that some independent entity (FBI?) reviewed the situation and basically determined that BK's video system sucked and had a whole lot of missing video.

Judge deciding whether to reveal police shooting video
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 1, 2015 -> 05:10 PM) I'm no fan of Rahm, but that's not exactly what happened. The guy who filed the FOIA request in the first place is an uncredentialled journalist (says a lot about the rest of the 'professional' Chicago journalists that didn't pursue this). When Rahm's press conference was announced, he and every other reporter in the city ran to city hall to get in. Space was limited, and reporters without the appropriate credentials weren't let in. I would be surprised if the guys working the doors would even know who this guy was from any other uncredentialled person. As far as they knew, this guy was no different from you or I trying to get into the overcrowded press conference. But everyone in that room (press side) knew he was being banned from the room. They were asking questions on his behalf. The bolded is also hard to believe. He filed a lawsuit that f***ed everyone in that room. They knew exactly who he was. Even still, again, if you're going to be credible and accountable, why not invite the guy who started the whole thing into the room?

Judge deciding whether to reveal police shooting video
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 1, 2015 -> 02:56 PM) I agree, it was quite terrible, though I would venture a guess that the cover-up work was almost entirely done out of sight of the Mayor. I do hold him accountable anyway though, through the lens of being a terrible manager, if that is the case. No chance. City Hall knew about the murder and the tape the night it happened or the next day. I'm 100% convinced Rahm, McCarthey, Alvarez, et al. had a call or a meeting and discussed the best way to handle the whole situation given the election ramifications and obviously the PR ramifications. If the judge had never ordered the CPD to release the video, it never would have gotten out and chances of that cop getting charged are very low. 14 months to indict! 14! Some bulls*** "blame it on the Feds" excuse is just that, bulls***. Let's also not forget about the "secret" CPD interrogation building. What's been the status of THAT investigation? Lastly, if you really want to know how Rahm operates, remember that the reporter that busted this whole story open was BANNED FROM A PUBLIC PRESS CONFERENCE INVOLVING THE MAYOR. Banned from the room! Lack of all credibility and accountability? I'd say so.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Dec 1, 2015 -> 11:49 AM) This I can get behind. In Chicago it's not necessarily the D it's more of the clique they built over decades. If you're in that little clique, you shouldn't be able to sniff politics in this city. Enough is enough. It's so ingrained though. You're not getting a city council position, judge appointment, garbage collector department head job, etc. unless you know someone in the system and have paid your dues. edit: and who's our next mayor? Most likely Preckwinkle. And whose camp is she in? Rahm's. She's part of the same cog.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 1, 2015 -> 11:48 AM) I think in any given locality, the minority party is less prone to corruption because the system does not have their back. And in the case of Chicago politics, how many Republicans are there? It'd be an entirely new set of people so less likely to be from a corrupt family/group.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 1, 2015 -> 11:16 AM) Rahm fired McCarthy to cover his ass. I thought McCarthy did a pretty good job actually. I know the rank and file liked him which maybe is not a good thing but those are the guys that need to be appeased as they still are responsible for doing the police work. So now Rahm's Chief of Police and Superintendent of Public Schools are both fired But don't worry! He's creating a task force! A task force to ensure police officer accountability.... you know, like the duties of the top brass at the CPD!! All is good! What a friggin' joke. It'd be really amazing if people in this city voted for unknown Republicans just once. Just to shake up the corruption for one cycle. Just one.

This is the type of Bulls game that makes me fear they're pretty average. I like Butler so much more when Rose isn't around. He's too passive when they both play.
