QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 12, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) While not a Lovie fan, he was winning, when you fire him and then the organization regresses, there is no way Emery should keep his job especially when Arians is doing what he is doing. Not enough. He went to the playoffs 3 times in what, 9 seasons? I don't care if he's winning 9-10 games. If you're not making the playoffs, gtfo.

Oof, doesn't look good for Irving. That knee went the wrong direction. Maybe MCL tear.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 10:54 AM) I love/hate Diplomacy. I still have it. I have a friend that will never play it with me again as no matter what the situation, I always seem to turn on him, or have anticipated when he will turn on me. There was just a big story on Diplomacy somewhere. Didn't know they have leagues, scoring and world tournaments. This American Life covered it like 6 months ago, which started the whole idea for us. So far we've had 2 game days (6-7 hours of drinking and stabbing each other in the back) and a couple of online games using backstabbr. They take months to finish, but it's kind of fun. The first game a friend turned on me and I got knocked out pretty quick. I was pissed off the rest of the day. Another game I won after aligning myself with someone the entire game and then backstabbing him at the end to win. I got all anxious about doing it because I felt like a dick. And sure enough after I did he was pissed at me for a while. Still good fun though!

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 02:11 PM) yeah, I can't remember the name either, but everyone had a 'country', and your country had points for food, production, minerals and oil. you had to allocate various things to have enough food for your peeps, but army, navy or air units, bases, or invest in tech to build better units. Moves such as invading other countries or shoring up city defenses (for simplicity you had only several major cities in each country that could be bases, etc.) had to be written down and sent in to whoever was moderating the game. Invasions were done with some program where they entered the units, how many and the strength and it gave them out the outcome. I can remember one time I was Mexico and had controlled all of central and south America as well as the desolation of North America (for a buffer of protection), but for some reason could not get Cuba. We had a friend back in the day that tried to make a battle program for that game on his own, and it worked, but it took way too much of his time with 40 or more players. This sounds like Diplomacy on steroids. I can't find anything about it online though.

QUOTE (SnB @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 07:51 AM) Everytime I hear clips from his lawyer, I can't stop thinking "GET TO THE POINT." She has such a grating, rambling way of speaking that I think the jury just loses her. Part of that is by design. You try to bore the jury and take their minds off the fact that they're there because of a pretty gruesome murder. The more innocuous you can make the whole thing seem the better. But I do agree that she would get annoying very quickly.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 06:52 PM) Jenks, you also didn't explain why who the CIA was torturing matters. It doesn't matter in the sense that it's right or wrong, but again this idea of the effects of it don't make sense when your dealing with groups of terrorists, not a sovereign nation with an army.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 04:59 PM) I'm struggling to figure out how beheading someone is worse than repeatedly rectally force-feeding someone while they're strapped down. I mean, if you gave me the choice I legitimately do not know which one I'd choose. Would probably depend on hope of escape/release. If I was stuck in the middle of a US Gulag and being waterboarded and rectally force-fed with no charges filed or hope of release...well... Um, because you die painfully and definitively, whereas with rectal feeding you probably won't? I'm gonna go with life 99% of the time. Look, again, i'm not excusing anything here. I'll i'm saying is when you read some responses it's as if the American CIA committed an atrocity akin to the Holocaust. It was terrible, immoral, unethical, unjustified, unacceptable and flat out wrong. No question. It was not the worst crime in the world, however. And there are people that are concerned that terrorists will be motivated even more by this, as if terrorists who are already beyond this point morally by beheading random, innocent people, aren't already at an incredibly hateful/immoral place. It's like complaining about throwing a can of gas on a 5 alarm fire.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 12:58 PM) If I were running a media organization, every person who said it would save lives or wasn't torture would be asked if they would support having a US Soldier rectally force fed. Because members of the Taliban who capture American soldiers wouldn't do worse things? I'm not ok'ing the torture or justifying it. But let's have some perspective here. We're not fighting a country. We're not fighting members of an organized military. We're fighting a bunch of randoms who live in the hills/mountains. Randoms that behead people. On the list of terrible things, sleep deprivation and forced rectal feeding is at least a smidge better than cutting off someone's head.

2014 TV thread
Ok, so my wife and I caught up with Homeland last night. While exciting/gripping, it was so unbelievably stupid and unrealistic. That's what made the first season or two great - you could actually believe that kind of thing would happen. This season? Not so much. A few issues here: The husband of the ambassador walking around the embassy, entering whatever door he pleases? Including private rooms? Please. A tunnel magically open to the outside world that isn't guarded or monitored at all (and apparently outside of the embassy walls?)? Please. Working with the Pakistani government (or even factions of the government) who are knowingly aiding and abetting the most wanted terrorist in the world? Please. Having a list of our assets in some unprotected form like a piece of paper? Please. And of course that's ignoring the greatest "wtf, yeah right..." - that the terrorist planned this all (per Carrie to Saul). So he planned to have Pakistani intelligence give the CIA station chief targets (killing his own family/people), which would then precipitate that CIA station chief being "outed" (even though he wasn't within the CIA itself until after he died), which would then result in a public murder, planned of course, which would then force Carrie to become the new station chief, which would require her to call Saul and bring Saul to Pakistan as a private security employee, which would allow for his capture (btw, this all requires that the CIA would notice the guy in the crowd with the ear piece and start an investigation that Saul would become a part of), which would result in a prisoner exchange, which would then set up an attack, which would draw every single military officer away from the embassy, but one, apparently, which would leave the embassy open for attack (i'm sure that's standard protocol). All of that pre-planning dependent, of course, on the terrorist-supporting Pakistani intelligence woman getting the ambassador's husband to steal information for them (such as the tunnel) which supposedly was not known about until after Saul was captured, but was always part of the plan to infiltrate the embassy?! WHAT. THE. f***. Having said all that, i'm very excited that Quinn is going full-Bond mode (knowing that i'll have to suppress and ignore the fact that he's white and would be outed in Pakistan within a day) and look forward to the upcoming episodes!

Ferguson Riots
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 02:01 PM) Not actually having a gun would be a pretty good clue. Easily tossed out the window. I'm not being a skeptic there, i'm seriously curious how the cops figured that out. You would think if anything they'd try to suppress the fact that a full scale murder by the entire force was committed because of an error.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 01:37 PM) Tired of Hinrich. I can take him for about 15 minutes a game but 30 is just way too much for him. I have to admit, he has his moments. There have been a few times this year where he's been instant offense, hitting big threes. Or making a good defensive play. The game last week against the Mavericks, he makes the bone headed play at the end, but he made a ton of big shots to get the Bulls back in it in the 4th. It's just the glaring mistakes. Mistakes veterans should not make. I think he had probably 4 TO's in the 4th quarter of the Warriors game. Just terrible passes and decisions. After about 2, I don't know why Thibs doesn't replace him. I guess since Brooks isn't a great defender. I'd like to see more Noah-Taj-Mirotic-Butler-Rose line-ups to close games. I feel like Hinrich and Gasol are too slow when you need a really big stop.

And if they're both dead, how do we know the noise was just a backfire? Seems like a detail only those two would know.

I think the rule should be 2 weeks from the original air date. Not everyone watches shows the night they are on. I know I don't. There's too much good TV these days. And it sucks not being able to talk about other shows because you don't want to read a potential spoiler.

UVa gang rape accusations
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 12:20 PM) I agree. Way too many people took the well-rehearsed, well-polished officer's statement as complete fact when it shouldn't have been viewed that way. There should have been a real investigation by an independent prosecutor to actually attempt to put together a real picture of the witness statements. Things like "Who could actually have seen what they said they saw, how does that square with the final position of the shot", "can we verify anyone else in real-time saying "he had his ****ing hands up" right after the shot". That's why a special prosecutor should have been appointed, to do that investigation. There should have been a skeptical cross-examination of the officer's statement too. 1) A special prosecutor coming in after the fact wouldn't have changed Wilson's version of what happened. 2) The GJ heard from all of the witnesses in person. It's not like the prosecutor was providing them with a summary of statements.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) That'd probably make a grand total of 1 in Chicago. I know about 3 guys who served and are now CPD (they were hired back in 2007 or so). I know there was a freeze for like 5 years, but I thought they finally started hiring again in 2011/2012?
