QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 09:21 AM) It is really long, but totally worth the watch, as it is with Ken Burns. Amazing work. Episode one was pretty great. It's amazing the pictures/video he can find. You'd think that stuff would be on the internet by now, but he's found some stuff I haven't seen before.
  2. I'm like you bmags. I generally enjoyed winter until last year. Walking my 1-2 miles from my office and to court and whatnot in 0-10 degree weather sucks. Standing around on a Metra platform waiting for a habitually late BNSF train became unbearable last year. I don't even mind the snow, the traffic, and the shoveling (though I do b**** about that) it's just the cold that I can'd stand anymore. I think as a kid and early adult I just never had to deal with it as much and it was never so extreme.
  3. Wasn't it the county police that overreacted? And the state national guard is the unit being called up?
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 09:20 AM) It seems to me more like a common sense thing than anything else. What would it look like if they didn't prepare, and then another worst case scenario happened? I agree. edit: and it's not like they don't already have protests in anticipation of the finding. They had 60 people saturday or sunday at the courthouse in sub-freezing temps. edit 2: and it still boggles my mind that people are using this situation as the springboard for "revolution." You had a thug that by all accounts attacked a cop. That's about the least sympathetic victim there could be, even if the cop made a terrible mistake. The dude in NYC who died from the choke-hold should have been the guy to rally around for police brutality/overreaction.
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 08:25 AM) There have been pro-Wilson leaks and 'sources' pretty much from day one. The surveillance store video being released while the PD was still otherwise "no comment," the 'sources' that reported Wilson had a broken orbital bone, the reported 'sources' that 'confirmed' Wilson's account mentioned in numerous articles with little or no actual details, the leaks from inside the GJ itself. 1) Those were from the investigation, not the grand jury proceedings. 2) Grand jury proceedings are private, and i'm pretty sure a judge would drop the hammer if there was a leak somewhere. There's only a select number of people that could be the source. I think we'd know by now if there was one.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 09:57 PM) As bad as the Ebola outbreak in this country? Or the widespread domestic Isis attacks? Bird Flu and West Nile still keep me up at night. Oh and SARs.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 05:32 PM) Well at least we have confidence that the grand jury proceedings were fair and that no one has gotten an inside view about how it's going. I assume this is meant to be sarcastic, but for the most part it has been kept pretty quiet, which is what you would want, no?
  8. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 03:18 PM) For real. Jenks treats Cutler like he's worthless. His last response to my post more or less proved that. The truth is that he's a mediocre to decent QB who can't win you games single-handedly like Rodgers or Manning. But he's also better than the majority of QBs in the NFL. QB's I'd rather have at this point for sure: Rodgers Rivers Manning Romo Brady Brees Luck Roethlisberger Ryan Wilson Stafford Kaep Tannehill Maybe: Foles Palmer (probably damaged goods now though) Smith THEN Cutler. So at best, middle of the pack. Which is fine. That's great. He's better than 99% of people out there at playing QB. But for what he's paid, for what the Bears have done the last 6 seasons to make it work, the fact is it really hasn't. He's very average on an offense stacked with weapons. As SS pointed out, he's regressed this year. He's NEVER gotten over his terrible foot work, his propensity to throw awful passes and turn the ball over. If anything his increase last year is due to having some weapons, but it's not like he's playing the game any differently. And here's the bigger point: Whether he's 20th best or 10th best, it really doesn't matter. He's not on the top tier, which means the Bears aren't winning any time soon. Throughout the history of the game teams have won SB's with great QB's or average QB's with great defenses. We have neither. And by the time you fix the defense (2-3 seasons, assuming the next coach doesn't radically change the system), Cutler's that much older, Forte is that much older, Marshall has probably killed someone and is out of the league, etc. The mistake was not drafting or signing a young QB the last 3 seasons. A potential successor should have been on the roster at some point because no one in their right mind was 100% sold on Cutler being a franchise, top level QB. It was always "but if he ____, then ____." And guess what, now we're back to excuse No. 362: "but if he gets a good coach who isn't in over his head, then he can be successful."
  9. I'm already over winter. And it's not even officially here yet.

Fyi if you didn't catch Ken Burns' The Roosevelts, someone posted the episodes to youtube. I just found them tonight.
  11. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 12:58 PM) Oh please, you really want Chad Hutchinson as your QB again? As much as I want an Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson at QB, those guys are hard to find. How much better is Cutler, honestly? A win? Three? But you've hit the main problem. Without a franchise quality QB you're not winning in this league. That's step #1. As we've seen, you can have offensive weapons all over the field and it's not gonna mean dick if your QB sucks.
  12. QUOTE (ptatc @ Nov 15, 2014 -> 03:42 PM) The problem isn't that simple. People currently complain about the quality and time it takes to see a physician. If you make it less attractive for people to become physicians, it will make the quality and shortage even worse. the best way IMHO is to go to an HSA system. Hospitals charge up to 60% less when paid in cash. Use insurance only for the catastrophic injuries. Everything else, cash. Much of the cost the hospitals and physicians trump up is due to insurance companies taking 180 days to pay. By the way even though hospitals and physicians may charge 117,000 or whatever, they know they aren't going to get it. They charge that and the insurance company says it will only pay 30,000. They hospital gets 30,000 and ingores the rest. It's mostly just monopoly money. Yeah, this is the big problem. And it has to do with agreements between the provider and the insurance company they're willing to work with. I just had a case come in where a lady got hit by a car as she was walking across a cross walk. $30k initial hospital bill for an overnight stay with monitoring/scans. Guess how much the insurance actually paid... $3,300 bucks.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 16, 2014 -> 02:01 AM) Serious question. I know a lot of people without health insurance. They can't afford it or are unemployed. Let's say you have no health insurance and have the start of a heart attack and call 911. Take me through what happens to you in terms of getting treated then charged for services. Thank u p.s. read another good op/ed story today that said Obama flat out made his plan incomprehensible to get it passed and lied about certain things in Obamacare knowing full well they were lies to the public. You call an ambulance, they pick you up, they take you to a hospital, normally one that is known to cater to uninsured people, you get to the ER, you get treated with everything you need and told to follow-up with your doctor. If you're medicare eligible, they bill medicare. If you're medicaid eligible, you go see the employee at the hospital that deals with medicaid and they set you up. If you're anyone else, they bill you and do a half-assed job trying to collect (if they do anything). Even if you're billed $5000, you can offer them $1500 and they'll probably take it.
  14. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 11:49 AM) And have another Jake Locker situation? We went through a QB carousel for almost 2 decades before Cutler came to Chicago and it sucked hard. It sucks hard to see him underachieve for most of his tenure here, but at least you have some certainty at the most important position on the field. Not having a stable QB is one of the worst things you can have in the NFL right now. He's consistently terrible. You're not winning with him. So why continue to delay the inevitable?
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 08:32 AM) This really does make a great case that Jay is a coach killer. If Jay's such a bad fit for what Trestman does, and Jay's such a bad fit for what Martz does, and he's such a bad fit for what Mike Tice does...at the very least it seems incredibly tough to find a coordinator that Jay is a good fit for. Throw in Shanahan too.
  16. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 15, 2014 -> 09:11 PM) Edge of Tomorrow is one of the great action movies of recent memory, damn shame it didn't garner the respect it deserves. Say what you will about Tom Cruise but dude knows what he's doing in action movies and this is no exception. Eh. My wife and I watched this on Friday. It was ok, but I kept reading reviews like yours - one of the better action movies out in recent years, should have gotten more respect. I didn't see it. Entertaining, but nothing earth shattering. IMO it was on par with Oblivion, which again was fine, but not great.
  17. It's annoying how little Mirotic plays. Or in this game, where the f*** is Gasol? We need points.
  18. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 15, 2014 -> 08:27 PM) I don't mean to toot my own horn. But the Cavs are f***ing good. lol@not making the eastern conference finals. Because they beat a pretty mediocre Atlanta team? Btw, I think Butler is now officially the Bulls' best player.
  19. So much for that improved offense. And the defense blows. Hope this is just first game jitters.
  20. ESPN3. The "hush" thing is the lamest stunt in basketball. It's brutal, every year. Don't know who gave the OK for that.
  21. I'm excited to finally get a snow blower. I'm buying one this year and I hope I never have to use it.
  22. QUOTE (Boogua @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) If Egwu gets hurt, then sure. There is more front court depth this year than there was 2 years ago when there was a sophomore Egwu, McLaurin, Henry, and Griffey. I would take SR Egwu, Hill, Black, and Morgan over that pretty much any day. That team was a 7 seed. Or gets in foul trouble. Basically I don't trust Morgan or Colbert at all at the 5 for anything more than about 5 minutes a game. And you know that's going to happen a lot, especially on the road in conference.
  23. QUOTE (Boogua @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 07:19 AM) My prediction for Illinois: 12-1 non-coonference, 11-7 in B1G play. 23-8 Regular season, 2 wins in the BTT, and a sweet 16 appearance in the tourney. I'm starting to buy the hype, but I just can't expect more than being a bubble team. Lack of front court depth is going to be a huge problem.
  24. QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 09:40 PM) Derrick can't take days off for his sore ankles, that would make him a giant p**** that doesn't care about winning! You saw him walking, he should be playing! Rabble, rabble, rabble!!!
  25. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 09:35 PM) I'm going to be guilty of overreacting every time he falls down. I apologize in advance. Lol you and every other Bulls fan. He has to go seasons before id be comfortable.
