  1. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) Anybody know a lot of Directv? I currently have a cable company and I have DirecTV coming tomorrow to see in they can install. In the past I had them come only to say they can't install for various reasons (I live in an apartment so there are a lot of rules). The last one that came about 5 months ago said they couldn't install because of "line of sight" the guy said he couldn't find 2 of the 5 points in the sky to receive HD. He told me I probably could get SD though but he still wouldn't install. So I figured we wouldn't be able to get it. I was curious so I called them today and told a guy what happened and he pretty much laughed at me and said it was probably a subcontractor that didn't want to do the work for whatever reason. And he pretty much said they can install the satellite I will get whatever I can get (either SD or HD) and told me they don't have SD receivers anymore. So I have a couple questions for anyone who might know or have an idea. 1) Will they be able to install even if I have cable right now? I don't want to cancel my cable service just for them to come tomorrow and say they can't or won't install. 2) If they install the HD satellite and receiver and the satellite can't get a signal for the HD channels, will all the SD channels work if I have the signal? People down the street have DirecTv and they have a lot more trees in the way then the one big tree that we are facing so it just doesn't make sense to me why they wouldn't install 1) yes. One has nothing to do with the other. They'll disconnect your cable coming in from the street and instead connect it to the dish. All internal wiring will remain the same unless you need some more installed. 2) I don't believe so. If you can't get a signal from the satellite, you can't get a signal. Plus, if you can't get HD, what's the point?
  2. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/2-french-te...ould-be-jihadis This is just beyond comprehension. They realize that jihad for them, if successful, guarantees them a life long sentence of being subservient to men in every possible way, right? It's literally the worst religion to join as a woman. The worst.
  3. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 11:45 AM) If that's the case in Ferguson, then yes. But the facts aren't all out yet. This guy had a weapon and approached police with it in hand, disobeying orders to stop. There is not a single thing wrong with their response. Not a single department would disagree. I don't know what to tell you. It's a suicide by cop, I'd bet anything on it. In a perfect world, to me, they would have waited another few seconds or a few more feet. Again, it was a shoot first response, which doesn't seem entirely appropriate. I'm not even sure they warned him first. They just kept saying stop.
  4. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 11:21 AM) Let's be completely honest here. The jaywalking instigation turned badly because the person being investigated turned physically aggressive, and it's most likely because he himself was aware that he had committed a strong armed robbery. I don't care what your opinion is, that's how I see it. Either way, it went south because the dead person became physically combative. And to the knife/shooting, if the police DIDN'T shoot him and he ended up stabbing a bystander or even one of the cops, why do I feel like the cops would be blamed for not acting on it? Looking at that video though, look at when the shoot. Didn't it seem to be a bit sudden? Alpha keeps posting about how quickly knife attacks can occur, but none of those situations are really present there. The knife was out already. The cops were 10-15 feet away (from the looks of it anyway). The cops were behind metal doors. I'm even fine with them having their guns out. I don't think that escalates the situation when you're dealing with someone who has a knife and is an obvious threat to anyone around him. But I dunno, they just shot so quickly. Seems like shooting was their first choice, not their last choice. And I say that knowing that we're talking about a few seconds and a few feet, but to me that's an appreciable difference. The Brown case is automatic for me if he did run back towards the cop. The cop's already been attacked once. Brown is attempting to do it again. I have no problem responding with shots in that situation.
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 11:15 AM) thought this portion of another Coates post is relevant: http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archiv...erguson/376098/ I'm sorry, but that's f***ing pathetic. That's just giving up. "Meh, boys [committing crimes and lowering property values] will be boys [committing crimes and lowering property values]!" edit: this is just like that crap article I posted about not calling the cops on a 13 year old that steals your phone. "Think of what will happen to him if you call the cops!" Yeah, he gets what he deserves for being a little s*** bag.

QUOTE (zenryan @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 12:36 AM) FXX showing 525 straight episodes of The Simpsons. Started at 10am this morning and ends Sept 1. The show really fell off in the early 2000s but still a few days away from those episodes. I was going to try and DVR all of them, and then I realized that would take 263 hours.
  7. Geez, don't google her at work.
  8. She's pretty great in Penny Dreadful. Naked once or twice IIRC.
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 09:14 AM) According to the majority of posters in this thread, that's exactly the case. And, from living in China for four or five years...I can honestly say the police would have handled it quite differently. I've literally seen 25 similar incidents to this where you have crazy/drunk men on the streets acting erratically, sometimes armed with weapons, other times not...and always a large crowd of people circling around them, especially in the case of an argument between two people. Never have I seen the police even pull their guns once. Once, I was on a bus and the driver cut off a motorcyclist because he wasn't paying attention and the motorcycle was in his blind spot. The driver of the motorcycle went ahead of the bus and stopped and blocked the bus. The bus driver, amazingly, got out to engage the motorcyclist in conversation and, meanwhile, the motorcylist had somehow gotten his hands on a crowbar and they were about to get into a huge brawl when the police came along, patiently talked to both of them for about 20-30 minutes until they were laughing...the weird thing was NOBODY even got off the bus, stopped from looking at their newspapers, cell phones or I-pads, it was like it was the most normal thing in the world. Now, if you get the Chinese military, special police/security forces or army involved, they'll shoot first and ask questions later, they're not taught to engage, just to kill their targets. For example, any time a man goes into a school with a knife and threatens teachers or children, he's done. Ok, but that situation doesn't mirror what happened here. You had a guy with a knife (not a crowbar) walking towards the cops and not listening to their instructions. I don't think you'd see too many US cops shooting a person who is in an argument with another person over a road-rage incident. I still think that shooting was justified, but it bothers me a little they shot so quickly.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 05:54 PM) So a girl from naked dating had her butthole and vag uncensored on TV, awesome. I wish they would release an uncensored version. Too blurry to see much of anything.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 03:42 PM) If the media and general population didn't think it was at all a part of the case, we wouldn't have heard about in the first place, there would have been no riots, no National Guard, no 10 day span of national news leading with this story and no Obama/Eric Holder press conferences. Or do you disagree? How many days did the national news, CNN, Fox News, lead their telecasts with stories about all the murders/killings/shootings in Chicago this past year? I think SOME people ignorantly thought this was another example of a white cop unjustifiably murdering a saintly black kid in cold blood. Turns out that's probably not a true depiction of what happened. But from there I think the story became more about the overreaction of the police and the militarization of the police. The race angle went away pretty quickly.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 03:35 PM) No, I never said that. Although I'm pretty sure a white officer in Ferguson has never been found guilty of any type of wrongdoing for an incident involving an African-American member in that community. You keep bringing up these racial issues though. Clearly you think that played a part.
  13. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 03:37 PM) So in order to win your argument, you have to condense the entire history of college football into 4-5 games a year for the last 15 years. I guess if that's what it takes. Come on dude, if you're going by that standard both Harvard and Yale are 1000 times more "special" than Notre Dame.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 03:17 PM) If it was that easy to find, I'm sure all these instances would be out there to support the Wilson/Brown case that it has nothing at all to do with race, it's just a complete coincidence. It's surely a coincidence as well that a black person killing a white person is 12X more likely to receive the death penalty than a white person killing a black person, even if there are multiple victims. So wait, let's go back. You really think this officer shot Brown because he was black? That's the only reason?
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 03:11 PM) There's no point in even trying to discuss things if posters are allowed to act exactly like the police do in these situations... I would just LOVE to see all these examples of African-American officers shooting down white kids in the streets all over America. PLEASE, it has to have happened at least ONCE. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=black+cop+shoots+white+kid
  16. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 02:04 PM) ND's academic rankings are consistently ahead of all Big Ten schools except Northwestern and occasionally Michigan, especially when the rankings focus on undergraduate education. Also generally better than USC. I think it's the combination of features. ND is not the only Top 25 academic institution ND is not the only school with multiple national championships ND is not the only school that holds athletes to high academic standards. ND is the only school that has consistently done all three, although Stanford clearly does the first and third things and is not far away from winning championships. Their last NC was nearly 30 years ago. I wouldn't call that "consistent."
  17. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 01:05 PM) From what I have read, I don't think tasers are always successful. They have to connect perfectly or they won't work, then you are left without a weapon in a knife fight. And supposedly even when they stick properly a certain % of people aren't affected by them.
  18. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 01:03 PM) OK fine, you can say that all you want. Find me some schools where the coursework requirements for football players come close to that of ND. If "it's really, really not," then that should be very simple for you to do. It's very easy for you to make any sort of claim you want if you don't back it up. Pretty much everyone agrees that Stanford is far and away the toughest academically for football. So the fact that ND continues to tout itself as "different" in that respect is ludicrous. Yes, it's got higher standards than some s*** school, but so what? Who decides that? ND. That doesn't make ND "special." ND just has a bug up its ass about being different and special from the rest of college sports. Other than having their own TV deal - which by the way puts them way down the list of schools that make $$ from TV - they're a f***ing football program just like the rest of them. They have scandals (more than the average even!), they have academic issues, they have personnel issues, they have off-the-field issues, etc. etc. They are not "special" in any sense of the word. And on top of all of that, ND fans STILL think they're some glorious program despite not having done jack s*** in football for how many decades now? 3 s***-bowl wins since 1995. Scheduling s*** schools like Navy and Purdue must be real tough. Hell, Illinois has 2 bowl wins in the same span and they are a TERRIBLE football program. I love the stadium, I love the old uniform. I love watching some of those awesome night games on real grass. But Christ please WIN something before crowning yourselves as the best program to ever exist. edit: actually I short changed the s*** program that is Illinois: they have the same amount of bowl wins in that span.
  19. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 12:59 PM) Doesn't bother me either if people are against ND, but when people falsely accuse someone I know of rape, then yeah, that bothers me. Maybe I just need to start sending screenshots to his attorney. What will that accomplish?
  20. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 12:56 PM) As much as I defend ND, I am not at all a fan of Kelly. The problem is that if you don't have personal knowledge of the university, you don't understand the difference between the university and the football program. The university, with little factual doubt, demands more academically of football players (and all athletes) than any FBS school except Northwestern and possibly Stanford. The university also holds football program itself accountable in ways that doesn't happen at other big time programs. At most SEC, ACC, and Big 12 schools, the football/basketball programs run pretty much unchecked. There is at least some accountability in the Big 10 and Pac 12, because most of those schools do have academic reputations, but even there (again except for NW and Stan) the athletic programs still have a lot more leeway than at ND. I never wanted Kelly hired in the first place. He always seemed shady to me. Of course, I wanted Skip Holtz and he couldn't even manage to keep a job at South Florida, so I admit I didn't have the right alternative to Kelly. The problem is that Kelly can't actually be tied to all of these problems. I truly believe that he was not involved in or even aware of all of these academic fraud problems, but I also believe that he has created a culture where this sort of thing seems to happen. Unfortunately it's going to be hard to fire him based on that. Also, he gets to skate on the videographer accident because his boss was present at practice that day and supported the decision to run practice as usual. If anything, that has to get pinned on the AD (who I actually like much more than Kelly). So the university is most definitely "special" among FBS institutions in how its athletic programs relate to the university as a whole, but the football program itself has become a lot less "special" under Kelly. Again, just proving Magary's point - ND is different, you guys. It's not. It's really, really not.
  21. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 12:50 PM) http://www.bladefighting.com/21footrule.htm Yeah but their guns were drawn and aimed at him before he even started walking towards them. So negate that time. AND they were behind their doors. Again, not saying they weren't justified, but this one is almost more iffy to me than Brown.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 12:49 PM) Wait, so you're actually questioning if that one was excessive? I'm not saying they weren't justified, but this one is more arguable given that they SEEM to have shot a little too quickly when other options may have been available to them. He's holding a weapon that's not long range, they're both behind their doors, he's 10-15 feet away (can't really tell) and he's walking slowly towards them. Certainly I'd argue the Brown shooting, if what the officer says is true, is more justifiable at the time the shots were fired. Had the knife guy walked another few feet there's no question. But at the time they shot? I dunno, seems a bit soon. And obviously we're talking mere seconds here. It's tough to criticize them for split second decisions.
  23. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 12:33 PM) Anyone dangerous within 21 feet with a knife approaching you, you should shoot. 21 feet seems a little far to be in "imminent" danger though. These guys also have their guns out and basically shoot immediately.
  24. Leitch no longer runs Deadspin, and hasn't for several years. Also, Magary is most definitely not a journalist and doesn't pretend to be. Not sure what you read to make you think that was some deep-thinking investigation piece. I love your criticism of anything anti-Notre Dame. It's not like you prove Magary's point for him or anything...
  25. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 10:30 AM) What if they were ok with it because they weren't aware of the historical context of the word? Now that they know that, this hypothetical person isn't allowed to push for change? And to Shack, we're all just using this forum to kill time while at work. It doesn't make the debate unimportant, but it's not like I could have been using this time to head to hearings in front of the Bureau of Indian Affairs to discuss ways to make meaningful change on the reservation. If we had a thread discussing that, I would gladly participate (because, like most people commenting on internet message boards, the one semester of Native American history - 1865-present - that I took in undergrad a decade ago definitely makes me an expert on the subject)... If you have to be educated about the offensive nature of the word, that pretty much shows you that the word is not, on a whole, offensive. I'm sure it's offensive to some. But there are hundreds of offensive words that we use/see/hear/read daily without thinking twice about it.
