  1. Pretty good read on both sides of the Chief Illiniwek debate, including quotes from the "current" Chief (an American Indian). http://theclassical.org/articles/the-chief I still think, as a kid, watching the Chief during the halftime show, getting the entire crowd behind him, was one of the coolest experiences at any sporting event I've ever been to. It sucks that my son will never get to experience that.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 11:42 PM) Well, I was asking for an example in the thread....here I found one, a black officer shooting an unarmed white kid in UTAH of all places Why isn't the media covering the killing of an unarmed white youth by a black police officer? The case of Michael Brown, the unarmed, black teenager shot and killed by a white police officer, continues to make headlines weeks after the incident sparked riots and outrage in Ferguson, Missouri, and prompted a national debate. Meanwhile, the case of Dillon Taylor, a white 20-year-old shot and killed by a black policeman outside a 7-Eleven in Utah has received virtually no media coverage beyond local news reports. His brother, who was with him at the 7-Eleven, says Taylor was unarmed. The negligible coverage of the Taylor case by the mainstream media prompted many conservative critics to address the racial double standard. The Washington Times reports: "Talk-show host Rush Limbaugh blamed the discrepancy between the two cases on 'the liberal world view' that portrays whites as oppressors and blacks as victims." The Times noted that CNN news host Jake Tapper acknowledged the discrepancy between the two cases, and noted that "the press often undercovers such topics as inner-city violence and the high rates of black-on-black crime." According to Tapper, though, the Brown case is more newsworthy because of the national reaction it sparked, though some question whether the excessive media coverage of the violent protests actually served to fuel them. - - Teresa Mull ?? 3. QUOTE (Felix @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 09:16 PM) What's this 'hype train' you're referring to? As someone that follows the team, there really hasn't been that much hype around him other than some viral stuff around his dunks (which is separate from being a good basketball player.. just ask Derrick Williams). I don't think Love is much of a leader in the locker room, but he's still one of the best 5-10 players in the world (and won't need to lead in Cleveland at all thanks to LeBron). He's also had the worst supporting staff of any superstar (by far) in recent history, and the Western Conference has been extremely stacked. It's not that tough to see why the Wolves haven't made the playoffs during his tenure. Just stop. A top 5-10 guy gets his team to be at least 8th best, even in a tough conference. I don't care who his supporting cast is.
  4. From Twitter it sounds like Rose played awful again. 3 out of 4 games now... Let's hope it's just rust.
  5. http://dish.andrewsullivan.com/2014/08/26/...e-of-diversity/ At some point the "you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink" axiom applies. Despite nearly 10 years of lip service, diversity isn't really increasing at colleges, so the excuse must be that schools aren't doing ENOUGH to show poor families that college is worth the substantial cost. We must make college MORE expensive so we can achieve another 1% gain.
  6. I don't know what that means.
  7. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 11:39 AM) I'm not familiar with the proposal that balta's talking about, but I think it'd be more about targeting dividends and capital gains or something, not wage income. I still find this hard to believe. Tax that stuff at 100% and you're still only touching a portion of the total pie.
  8. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 10:35 AM) The benefit is mostly for international businesses, which BK happens to be. This is why you have Apple/Google/MS, etc. hiding money overseas and refusing to bring it back here. Keep in mind when you wield the kind of money these companies have, it's easy to get away with doing that, because they still have plenty of money laying around here, too. But for smaller places that aren't bleeding billions in profits, they HAVE to bring that money back here to invest, expand, etc...and the US loves to double-dip taxation on profits made overseas. In short: 1) US HQ'd company makes money in Europe, pays all of the tax due in Europe for doing business there (as they should). 2) Same US HQ'd company needs to bring the money back to the US, does so, and gets taxed on that same money AGAIN. Result: Companies that cannot afford to ignore their money overseas and HAVE to bring it back get to pay tax twice. Those companies say f*** that, and leave. Wouldn't they still have the double-dip problem in Canada and other countries (unless the country has some kind of exemption for paying taxes on foreign income)?
  9. I still don't see how that makes up for taxes on billions of dollars of revenue. A company isn't paying out all that revenue to salary, so to change from taxing all revenue to just taxing a portion of the revenue that is designated for salary doesn't really add up, even if you increase the tax rate on the high end.
  10. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 10:14 AM) Lavine will bust harddddddd The next Tyrus Thomas.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 10:18 AM) I'm seeing several gradually more convincing perspectives from the left after this arguing that we'd actually be better off cutting the corporate tax rate substantially and raising the personal income tax rate to make up for it since so much money is spent every year on finding and creating loopholes in the corporate tax rate that it impacts the economy and the ability of the government to operate. Wouldn't you lose a ton of tax revenue doing that?
  12. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 09:51 AM) The actual US corporate tax rate is pretty meaningless...they can set it to 100%, but the sheer number of loophoes involved can bring that down to under 5% quite easily. If that's the case why are all of these companies moving their headquarters? Taxes can be avoided to a point, but the US still has the highest combined corporate tax rate in the world. It's sad that Canada offers them THAT much incentive.
  13. Why is Canada's total corporate tax rate 14% lower than the US? http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkbl...nd-lower-taxes/
  14. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 10:04 PM) I'll come help you paint if you come help me paint. I'm hoping for the best and bracing for the worst. Just hope to land one of them, and hopefully one of the other targets. Hell even just one of those guys is enough at this point, I won't get greedy in case the recruiting Gods are reading this. Also I s*** you not, I had a dream last night about Brunson's visit. Nothing concrete happened (and I woke up early from it), but I woke up confused as hell. I'm expecting the worst. I'm too beaten down these days to get excited about recruiting/free agency.
  15. QUOTE (gatnom @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 05:46 PM) So Auburn has had one weekend to recruit and has landed 3 recruits in that time period. Are you telling me that Bruce Pearl was recruiting when he shouldn't have been? I can't believe it. What a POS.

The rule this year was apparently - give the Emmy to someone who already has an Emmy. Most were well deserved, but the Modern Family love is nauseating. That show WAS great, but hasn't been good for a while. The stories are all the same, they just changed up the couple. Meh.
  17. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 10:20 AM) With the new whole home DVR and stuff all the wiring will need to be replaced most likely. Trees do not effect the signal as much as people think They should be able to use the same coaxial cable his old cable service used for the main box. And if he gets the new genie system, the remaining TV units will be wireless genie boxes. No cables needed.
  18. Lol, my wife and I were saying Beyonce had everything but the stripper pole. And then she busts it out. With her like 3 year old daughter watching. Stay classy. #getoffmylawn
  19. Watching the VMA's, when did these ugly women with fat asses become so popular? Nicki Minaj? Iggy Azalea? Yuck.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 09:26 PM) Thank god I will never have to watch another episode of True Blood. What a horrible f***ing finale. +10000000 Worst show on TV.
  21. Whelp, enthusiasm for the season crushed.
  22. I'm sure the call coming in was deranged man waiving a knife around.
  23. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 04:16 PM) Just like you and the rest of the board will need a new team to b****, moan, whine and cry about. I'm guessing it will be Cleveland. well, duh.
  24. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 04:07 PM) The Wolves are gonna be must-see tv with Lavine/Wiggins. I'm pretty f***ing excited right now if I'm a Wolves fan. You need a new team now that the Heat won't be the best in basketball, so...
