  1. QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 09:47 AM) Exactly, there will never be enough evidence to make a case in a criminal court. Stewart is not going to admit if he did it. The interesting part will be if there is a civil case. However, I think that Ward walking down toward car will cast enough blame on him that it may not go anywhere. Agreed. There will be a lawsuit and a quick settlement probably. Ward was clearly more at fault here. He put himself in a position to be hit.
  2. It'd be great if the black communities in St. Louis, Detroit, Chicago, etc. responded with this much energy when black kids are killed senselessly by other black kids.
  3. The kid did serve his "time," but I agree this was a stupid move on the part of the coach. At the very least, why would you want the attention/backlash that move is going to bring?

Anyone watch the first episode of Outlander? Obviously geared towards women, but I still thought it was pretty good.
  5. Wow, Robin Williams. Possible suicide.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 03:52 PM) Anyone watch Married on FX? Watched first four on demand and I like it. Going to try "You're the Worst" next. My wife and I have watched them all so far. It's a solid show. Occasionally they have some actual, relateable marital issues and have fun with it, but then they run with a "we live in LA with two kids and have no money but we have fancy laptops and buy coffee drinks and go on romantic getaways" story line which is old and overplayed these days.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 01:52 PM) Hell on Wheels added some nice Federal Law baddies this season. But for like the 3rd season in a row we have to watch the people of Cheyenne be surprised that Bohannon is still alive as he returns to town, thought to be dead. I enjoyed the first season, but eventually gave up. The show just didn't go anywhere. And the characters all kinda sucked.
  8. Put me in the camp that wonders what the hell that moron is doing walking around on the track while the race is ongoing. Nothing good comes from that. A tragedy, but a tragedy that was entirely avoidable.
  9. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 01:51 PM) I'd guess Stevie makes a bit more than that. People estimate he made 12 million with Tiger, 10% of Tiger's ~120 million in earnings. I find that a little difficult to believe, but maybe.
  10. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 12:30 PM) Bad things happen to everyone, some more than others, but being civilized is WHY we don't loot/pillage and or use it as an excuse to break laws which are designed to protect other people (usually innocent people) when something like this happens. It's what separates us from the animals. Yes, I said animals in case the thought police needed clarification. Das racist!
  11. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 01:02 PM) I think it's as high as 10% sometimes...not sure though. They all have different deals. Some have a set salary + part of the winnings, some just have a percent of the winnings. The average caddie doesn't make a ton, maybe 6 figures in a good year. Your Fluff's and Steve Williams' probably make a few hundred grand in the good years. Plus i'm sure they get some really nice presents.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 12:34 PM) Well, that's human nature. This tourney had the best rating for PGA Championship since, you guessed it, 2009 when YE Yang shockingly took down Tiger. The Masters is generally around a 7.5 rating, I think the 2009 was 6.8 and this one must have been in the low or mid 6's. That said, McIlroy isn't an American, and it's like comparing tennis when Roger Federer or Nadal are dominating with the years of McEnroe and Connors, or Sampras and Agassi, the Williams Sisters, etc. You can appreciate how great McIlroy is, how far he hits the ball (especially the scorcher to the green that preceded the eagle, the only player on that green in 2 Sunday)...but I would imagine 75% of the people tuning in were still rooting for Mickelson or Fowler. I disagree. I mean, i'm sure a big portion of them are, but a big and probably bigger portion were people that wanted to see of Rory could win another one. That and you had 4-5 guys within striking distance. And each of them (maybe not Stenson) would have had a great story to go along with it. I don't think Rory's nationality does anything to the numbers. Golf's stars that can bring a TV audience (basically Tiger and Phil the last decade) just so happen to be the guys with the most majors in that time frame. You need golfers that win big tournaments and win them repeatedly to get that name recognition. You do have some international guys like Vijay and Angel Cabrera and Harrington that won 2-3 majors and never really got "huge" here, but I dunno, Rory's a young dude, looks American, sponsored by Nike, lives here in the states full-time, etc. He'll never reach Tiger's level, but he could easily become the game's biggest star and a huge draw for TV.
  13. http://abc7chicago.com/news/parade-organiz...olence-/251581/ I sorta understand their frustration, that positive stories are pushed aside for negative ones, but come on. People were shot standing adjacent to the parade route. Of course that's going to be the lead when the media covers the parade.
  14. Yesterday's final round was more entertaining and enjoyable than 90% of Tiger's major victories. It sucks that the media has to keep talking about Tiger while this new generation is making history and creating a much more compelling and memorable viewing experience.
  15. Tiger at +7....still playing....no fake injuries yet.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 11:13 AM) And you're arguing that the country which is taking the land their homes sit on and blockading them will change course and allow those people to live in peace, which from their perspective makes just as little sense. Which again, leaves me no reason to do anything but fight alongside that terrorist organization. SOME of the land. And Israel offered SOME land back. Again, they lost the wars, they have to give up more to obtain peace. Fighting accomplishes nothing but getting their own people killed. Living on less land > not living at all. They can't possibly expect Israel to just give in and change their minds while they're being hit with rockets.
  17. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 11:56 AM) The problem here is that, for the Palestinians, even when the bombings are not happening, the concessions basically turn Gaza into a prison. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-22197938 The story linked above from the BBC is indicative of that. Basically, 22 Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip (including a former Olympian) were not allowed to travel to Bethlehem for the Palestinian Marathon in 2013 because the runners would have to travel through Israel to get there, and those trips are allowed "only in exceptional humanitarian cases." The position Israel took during the Dubya peace talks was that Israel would need to maintain a significant amount of control of the Palestinian state (see my earlier post on the subject). Put yourself in the shoes of the Palestinians and you can see why they wouldn't take the "concessions" that Israel is demanding. In the West, we have an easier time putting ourselves in the shoes of an average Israeli (not surprising, they are our allies) than we do the average Palestinian. There is a reason this conflict has been going on for 70+ years and any attempt at resolution falls apart. Israel wants to ensure its security (understandable in light of the history here) and the Palestinians want freedom (again, understandable). With every Palestinian civilian death and with every rocket fired into Israel by Hamas, however, the odds of resolution become more remote. Sure, but their own actions caused that problem. Israel didn't just wake up one day and decide they were going to install blockades and implement travel restrictions. I guess to me that's my issue with this. I see both sides and can understand the motivations of both sides. But the history says the Palestinians f***ed up twice by thinking they could take over Israel. So guess what, because THEY f***ed up, THEY have to concede more in order to obtain some kind of peaceful resolution.
  18. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 11:04 AM) That's a terrible move for the Sixers. Young is like their only good player and they're going to give him away for a guy who was absolutely dreadful in his first year. The 2015 tanking is on.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 10:38 AM) This is in contradiction to your earlier response. My statement was that the reason why no one other than Hamas's "kill israelis" mantra has any authority in the area is that Israel is taking all the land they can, expelling people from that land, and generally offering nothing of value in negotiations. You replied that Israel has made some possible offers of land in reply, but when I point out how inadequate that is, you say "So what". That continues the problem. Your response "so what" leaves me with no reason whatsoever to not die while fighting Israel if I live in that area. They're taking my land, they're not giving anything up, they're dropping bombs all around me, I can barely get food and water, I'm probably going to die in a bombing anyway, why shouldn't I try to get my hands on a weapon and go down fighting? I'm saying (1) it's not as clear cut as you're making it out to be. Isreal isn't taking anything and everything it wants without giving up something in return. It might be somewhat lopsided, but hey, "so what," that's what happens when you invade a country and try to kill their people. You lose things you once had. And (2) yes, at the end of the day "so what" again when your people are dying. Cut your losses, take less land, live in peace and eventually the blockades will end. But not until you cut ties with a terrorist organization and not until you can be trusted again. You're basically arguing that they should all fight an unwinnable war instead of taking concessions and living in peace. That makes zero sense.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2014 -> 09:41 AM) If you actually go into that article it makes clear how hesitant the current Israeli leadership would be to accept any deal that could even be framed as fair...it stresses Netanyahu wants to gain extra territory in any swap and maintain a lot of the territory that has been developed over the last 14 years since Arafat said no to the last real shot at a negotiated settlement. That fits into the Problem. Israel wants to keep basically everything they've annexed, which requires them giving the Palestinian Authority basically nothing in negotiations. They can't have territorial integrity, they can't have statehood, they can't have military or strong security forces, they can't travel freely, they can't build an economy. They're not being offered anything that would be worth accepting, and thus there's no reason for the people to care about them. I still say - so what? Israel won the wars. They have no obligation to "play nice" and give into Palestinian demands. If peace and prosperity requires the Palestinians to lose a little land, you do it. Hamas is just getting their people killed for no gain. And again, they can have those things, eventually, IF they can earn back some trust. But you know what doesn't earn trust: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/09/world/mi...p-news&_r=1 Right after the cease fire ends they fire 33 rockets (and some before the cease fire ended, if the reports are true). And of course that provoked a response from Israel leading to the death of a 10 year old. Their strategy here makes zero sense. Well, actually it does a little. Because despite being the problem and provoking the killing, they're starting to win the PR war.
  21. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 01:26 AM) Well by that logic, you also technically didn't need tablets either. You could have watched your TV shows on your phone. You could have read your books on your phone. You could have browsed the web on your phone. It just so happened that bigger screens fit those things better. You can also read your notifications on your phone, but that requires you to take your phone out of your pocket, unlock your phone, and use your hands. It just so happens that a smart-watch gets rid of all of those needs. Thus, smart-watches are better for viewing your notifications along with an array of other hands-free activities that make it more convenient than looking at your phone. And I'd much rather spend $200 on a watch that does more than read how many steps I took than spend $100 on a Fitbit. Wearables are going to be a thing, I pretty much guarantee that. And the smart-watch is going to be the first wave of said wearables. It hasn't really taken off yet because the first watches to market (Pebble, Samsung Gear) have been very limited and somewhat terrible. Android Wear is the first real OS developed specifically for the smart-watch and it's a great foundation for developers to build upon. Yes, you could do it on a 3-4" phone, but it was MUCH better doing it on a tablet. You're downgrading that experience on a smartwatch. Notifications and getting traffic updates don't need a bigger screen like watching entertainment or reading books. To me this screams Kinect. "ZOMG guys! Look at all this fun stuff it can do! It'll change gaming!" Oh well, actually no it was a costly gimmick that was fun for about 30 minutes and from that point on just became a pain to use. Wearables as in Google Glass, yeah, I can see THAT being a thing. Real time notifications, maps, email, texts, taking photos and video, etc., all without requiring ANY hands. Now that's an enhancement. Making me look at a 2" screen and use my hands basically the same way I use my phone BUT still limited in what I can see/do - makes little sense.
  22. Hearing on the radio this morning that Ravens fans cheered for Ray Rice last night during their pre-season game. It makes me sad that we, as a society, can ignore some terrible crimes simply because the criminal excels at a sport.
  23. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Aug 7, 2014 -> 11:19 PM) Durant dropped out of FIBA. Shocker. Maybe the Paul George injury broke him mentally. A quitter. Plan and simple.
  24. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 7, 2014 -> 04:13 PM) That's where I'm at. Maybe they are your 2nd school. Going and graduating from a school has to count for something, but whatever. Now you're just throwing s*** all over the place, not really making any sense. Someone who roots for their team, their school, is a better fan to me. You just said it yourself, bandwagon hopping. If you don't root for your school, IMO that makes you a bad alum and fan. How could you ever root for OSU over Dayton, if you went to Dayton? I wouldn't really respect an SIU grad who rooted for their school for 4 years the suddenly ditches them to hop on an Illinois bandwagon, if they were bigger or better. If that's elitist, so be it. So, I went to Illinois Wesleyan, a DIII school, but grew up outside of Champaign and went to basically every Illinois football and basketball home game from the ages of 7ish-18 (and then from 18-32 when I could). Is it not ok for me to be a fan of Illinois over IWU? Am I a "worse" fan than you? I get what you're saying when people choose to like a school because that school is successful but there's zero connection there. But if you grew up a fan because of geographic proximity, and then went to a different school, it makes sense to me that you can maintain your allegiance if you want to. That doesn't make you more or less of a fan.
