  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 08:43 AM) So...Oklahoma killed a man last night in a way that makes Thomas Edison's elephant electrocution look humane. Boo. f***ing. Hoo. It infuriates me that you people feel sympathy for these animals.
  2. Whelp, thank God this season is over. Goodbye Boozer, I will not miss you.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 02:54 PM) A lot of good info in there. So basically the sale of the team angle is: if you want to make any money on the sale, let us have it, otherwise you can take your franchise and it'll be worthless since it won't be apart of the NBA anymore.
  4. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 02:17 PM) When it starts affecting the bottom line, then yes. 14 major sponsors have pulled out of agreements with the Clippers, that kind of stuff gets noticed. Also, he offended a minority group that consists of 80 percent of the NBA, as well as specifically a legend of the game. This isnt as much fake outrage as you would like to think it is Well, let's be honest, it is a bit faux outrage. This dude's been doing this kind of stuff for decades and the drum beat to get him out of the league never started until now and he was out of the league in what, 4 days? I'm not at all suggesting it's unjustified by the way. I'm just saying I can see Cuban's argument about how this might play out in the future, depending on what by-law/provision they used here.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 02:15 PM) He doesn't own the business. He owns a franchise of the larger business that is the NBA. As such, he signed a franchise agreement when he bought the team that stipulates what he can and can't do. Odds are pretty good that he is in very clear violation of that franchise agreement, otherwise the NBA wouldn't have been able to drum the guy in just a few days time. Legally it is no different than a guy who owns a McDonalds or BP gas station being forced to sell them because his actions violated their franchise agreement. It is a legally binding document. I guarantee you that McDonalds could not pull a franchise because one owner said something racist in a private conversation. Those types of places are different animals compared to a professional sports league. You may be right, I dunno. It's interesting that Silver said they were going to work with Sterling to sell the team, not that they were going to force him to relinquish it.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 02:01 PM) Plus, you know, the record-setting housing discrimination settlement he paid in the past. It's not like he actually did keep his abhorrent views private, they had real-world effects on people. Yeah but if there's some kind of by-law that is governing this move, none of that stuff is relevant. The question would be solely his ownership/management of the Clippers and how he treats his players/staff.
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 01:50 PM) Slippery slope arguments are not convincing to me. He didn't say "anything" behind closed doors, he said words that were hateful and directed at a community that makes up the vast majority of it's players and a significant portion of his fans. He didn't just say something that was offensive, he said something that was significantly damaging to the league he is an owner in and makes money being a part of. So if another says "anything" which has equal damage to the league, sorry, you will get paid 1 billion to leave that league. Because people never say awful things to their friends/family while in the privacy of their own home? I mean I get it, he's a racist and he's got a past so they had to do something, but Cuban's argument about the slippery slope makes sense. What if you're an outspoken guy (like Cuban) who is in the public eye (like Cuban) and you do things that piss off other owners (like Cuban) and you get drunk and say something stupid, let's say directed towards a woman, would this set a precedent that the NBA could ban him and take away his team? Could owners conspire together and fake outrage over some comment and try to force the commissioner to get rid of someone?
  8. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 01:33 PM) Definitely. I get his point though. It's pretty dangerous to start a trend that anything an owner says in private - even if he doesn't act that way publicly - can get his team taken away from him. But I think the key here is that Sterling has been this way for a long time and people just kept looking the other way because it didn't directly affect the Clippers, a now prominent team. If the Clippers had still been the worst organization in the league I bet this doesn't happen the way that it did.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 02:37 PM) Do you hate all the TV shows you watch? Nope. And I'm not alone in my dislike for this season.

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 12:54 PM) My least favorite scene was littlefinger having to spell this s*** out to Sansa for the second week in a row. Like...really Sansa? He told you this a week ago. What do you think he was doing with that necklace? In the books
  11. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 12:47 PM) That is the real bad part. People really shouldn't be surprised by this and he should have been kicked out a long time ago. This is on Donald Stern. He refused to take a stand against the POS that was Sterling. He's been the worst owner in professional sports for a long time and he's also a turd of a human being and calling him a turd is being nice. How do we know Stern didn't try to talk the other owners into getting rid of him? To a certain extent Stern (and Silver's) hands are tied on this. They can't/won't do anything without the support of the other owners. And i'm sure the other owners don't want to touch this issue with a 20 foot pole.
  12. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) And I agree with this, if we have 4 or less wins it's an immediate fire. 5 wins and he's probably safe, but has zero wiggle room. They should get to 5 wins without an issue. 3-1 in the nonconference, and beat two of the three against purdue/minn at home and NW on the road. Maybe you steal one of the Iowa/Penn St games at home.
  13. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 11:06 AM) Indeed. He takes more pride in being the negative, complaining Illini fan. Some people are just that way. And then on the other side, we have Illini fans who can't see that holding on to someone for too long puts your program in an even bigger hole. The Illinois football program has been that way for the last 25 years. Every time there are some gains, they take a huge leap backwards because they hire the wrong guy and stick with him way too long. From Tepper to Turner to Zook. Illinois fans, for some strange reason, have amnesia about that and pretend that THIS time is going to be different. I'm in the middle here. I think it takes a few seasons to dig a program out of the mud. It takes time to get the players you want. It takes time to change the culture. But you don't get 4-5 years, you get three to show real improvement. So far, only the offense has improved. This upcoming season will be a telling one. Maybe they go bowling and Beckman and Co. can continue to nab some of these good, not great, players. If they suck next year, he better be gone.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 09:32 AM) Even people from Illinois don't think much of Illinois. http://theconcourse.deadspin.com/which-sta...dium=socialflow I'm surprised it's that low to be honest. I bet I could poll the people I know and 75% would say Illinois blows and if they could they would leave in a heartbeat.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 09:06 AM) I hated GoT last night. WTF are those story lines? This was a slow down, let's not blow our load too quickly, episode. Tough to follow those first three hours.

QUOTE (SnB @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 07:39 AM) That was the best episode of the series and I would have been completely satisfied if that was the series finale. Now I'm concerned they won't top it next year. I think the main driver of the time skip was to get out of having another pregnancy/baby story line which they just did w/ Ann. I enjoyed the finale, but this last season sucked. They re-did a bunch of the same story lines (unity concert = fall festival or whatever it was called) and the funny moments were few and far between. The dude that yells at people in the street is not funny, he's obnoxious. A guest appearance would have been fine but becoming a secondary character was too much. He's the male version of April I think April sucks balls. It would have been awesome if Lesley had taken the job and moved on. Or, better yet, if they had ended the show now, before NBC drives it into the ground like they did with The Office.
  17. He gets in everyone's way and is absolutely worthless on defense. He screws up the entire defensive rotation by being lazy.
  18. God I hate Boozer. Anyone saying he needs to play more in the 4th is a f***ing moron.

  20. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 25, 2014 -> 12:11 PM) Everybody in Chicago loves the 85 Bears who had many black players, so therefore there are no racism issues in Chicago whatsoever. Got it. Maybe Bardo's comments sounded a bit too all encompassing and didn't need to make it sound like the entire town is racist. I guess I just didn't take them as literally that he's damning every citizen of the town. I mean that's the problem, he said the community of Champaign, and people got on him for being too broad with that statement, and he just kept going with it. At one point I think he said that the school itself was fine for students but not the cops and the community at large.
  21. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 07:36 PM) So if you follow black athletes you can't be racist. Got it. I just don't see what the big deal is. He obviously hates Champaign so much that he let his son attend college there. A few parts of his experience he didn't enjoy, his son had a questionable incident, he is just speaking his mind a little bit. Plus, are you really trying to tell me that Champaign isn't racist at all? Not even a little bit? Yeah, I think that statement is true. An entire town can't be racist while cheering for, and celebrating, the accomplishments of black athletes (and doing so for a very, very long time). The Flying Illini are talked about in Champaign like the 85 Bears are in Chicago. They're a beloved team. They JUST had a 25 year anniversary celebration for them. I bet Dee Brown is the most famous/favorite Illini of all time, and he happens to be a black dude with cornrows. And the people of Champaign love him despite hating black people?GMAB. Bardo is still a well known face around town. It's moronic to say that because some black kids have had some bad experiences on/around campus (an experience mind you, when he ran away from cops, because that's NEVER a sign that a kid is trying to hide something), the entire community is racist and stuck in the 60's. Tell people there are still racist cops. Tell people you had some s***ty experiences. Don't stereotype an entire town of people and make the school look bad in the process. You're not being an advocate for the school when you do that. IIRC Bardo's also not exactly the most perfect guy in this regard. In a prior book he s*** on someone in the program and it didn't sit well and i'm sure he did it to sell books (oh and he just happens to have a book that was published recently). And no, I don't think Champaign is racist anymore than any other town in this country. A small % of people may be racist, but not the town, and not the majority of the people in that town.
  22. Also I'm white and I got stopped by campus cops at multiple colleges too. That sort of comes with the territory where 18-22 year olds break the law and do stupid s*** nightly.
  23. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 05:14 PM) The type of people that will turn on him aren't relevant to the program anyway. He's not exactly helping the program by drawing attention to this incident more AND telling recruits the town they might play in is full of racists with 1960's views. Also f*** him for saying the whole town is racist. The town that followed/follows black athletes like him for decades and decades. He's and idiot and my opinion of him has changed for sure.
  24. Stephen Bardo takes to Twitter today to say the cops overreacted to the Darius Paul situation (ignoring the resisting arrest part of the story) and that it only happened because Champaign is a racist town. Well done Bardo. Way to get a fan base to turn on you in a split second.
  25. QUOTE (gatnom @ Apr 17, 2014 -> 11:32 PM) Interesting point. I have loans ranging from 3.4% to 6.8%, but due to the way the federal loans seem to aggregated, I'm not sure that they will let me pay off the higher interest loans specifically. I'll have to contact them to see exactly how it works since apparently this isn't a frequently asked question in the FAQ section. Doing some rough math, if they were to use a weighted average for the rates, it would be about 4.87% which would be enough I would think to try to pay them back first. Is there any fund you would recommend? I've heard of a few, but I'm not sure if any of them are particularly good. You can. You can do it two ways, depending on what service provider you have. Some of them allow you to make an extra payment online and you can tell them specifically what loan you want it applied to. If you don't have that option, write them a letter and tell them that you'll be sending them X amount in extra payment and that you want it applied to the highest interest rate loan with the lowest balance. Here's an example of a letter: http://files.consumerfinance.gov/f/201310_...n_repayment.pdf
