  1. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Apr 8, 2014 -> 02:22 PM) Haha really? It's a different situation obviously but nobody ever said a bad thing about Paterno either. It's that emperor mentality. JoPa could barely stand the last ten years, let alone rule Penn St. like an emperor.
  2. I wonder if Title IX would even apply if athletes became employees.
  3. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Apr 8, 2014 -> 01:17 PM) While we're on the subject of coaches from the state of Kentucky who are jerks, I have a friend who is a charter pilot and once flew Rick Pitino. After the flight, within earshot of my friend, he said, "Don't give me that pilot anymore, I want somebody old enough to shave." Why is that being a jerk? Maybe he has a fear of flying? If i'm having surgery and a 30 year old doctor walked in to the room, i'd be saying the same thing. Give me someone old and seasoned, not new and green if my life is at risk.
  4. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 8, 2014 -> 01:10 PM) From what I understand, he wasn't part of the story. You're wrong on this one. Dan hates people that deserve hating I.e. going to town on Penn st etc. Hes also hinted at other stories, but again, from what he says it didn't have to do with him. Hes connected and in the media, but take stupid shots all you want. Hes also FAR from the only person that has said or heard bad things about him. Come on man, Dan's an asshole, especially to his own audience. I've listened to the guy off and on for 2-3 years now and he's just getting worse. Give me more examples then. You listen to Chris Collins, Grant Hill, Loul Deng, Laettner, anyone at ESPN, etc. and it's nothing but candy and roses about Coach K and the program. So far I've heard of one negative opinion from a blowhard on the radio. The lack of evidence tends to indicate the lack of an issue. But if you have more examples or can find some more verified examples I'm open to being wrong here. I hate Duke and I don't really care for Coach K (more so because of jealousy for how good Duke has been and how he comes into Chicago and takes talent out of state). I'd be more than happy to s*** on them if it's warranted.
  5. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 8, 2014 -> 12:22 PM) You may be joking - but no, it really doesn't. Dan generally hates people for good reason, and the way in which he talks whenever Coach K comes up lets you know it. He was pretty close to him for a long time and knows much more than we do, so that works for me. Plus you listen to the guy talk about Duke, the ACC, etc, he's just a prick. Boeheim is right there with him, though for once I was on his side with the Ennis comments. Bernstein is the biggest tool out there. I guarantee you what happened was 20 years ago Bernstein was being an asshole and Coach K told him to stop or that he didn't like something Bernstein wrote or whatever, and for 20 years Bernstein has held a grudge about it. That's just the way he is. Coach K could be the biggest asshole in the world, I have no idea. What I do know is very few of his players or assistant coaches ever talk bad about the guy. So I tend to believe the lack of any evidence of this issue is more telling than a lone DJ from Chicago who used to be a Duke student in the 80's. And again, even if he is a prick, so what? He's ruled over college basketball for 2.5 decades now. I think he has the right to run the program as he sees fit. And if it's holding out a top 5 lottery pick because he feels that's the best way to win, so be it. I feel icky defending him or Duke so I have to go take a shower now.
  6. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 8, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) LittleHurt, you obviously have heard Dan Bernstein talk about Coach K. Dan went to Duke and would have every reason to love Duke and Coach K, but he absolutely cannot stand him. That tells me enough right there, in addition to the stories he's told on air, including the one you referenced. Pssh, Bernstein saying that means Coach K is a freakin' saint. I mean yes, Coach K is obviously synonymous with Duke, but can't the same be said for MSU and Izzo? Or Boeheim and Syracuse. Or in the past Knight and Indiana? When you're at a program for decades and you're successful, how can you not be the most famous/important person there?
  7. I don't think he's the only dirty coach, but I also don't believe EVERY coach is dirty.
  8. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 8, 2014 -> 09:40 AM) You sir, deserve to be executed. Ha, probably. I dunno, I don't get the fascination. I was never into comic books as a kid, so i'm sure that's part of it. But I remember watching the first Spider Man with Toby McGuire and thinking this is so full of cliches and just awful, i'm never doing this again. The Batman movies were an exception, mainly because two of the three were filmed in Chicago and they were a little darker.
  9. Am I the only one on the planet that has not seen, or have any interest in seeing, any of these comic book movies (sans the Nolan Batman series)? I feel like I am.
  10. That's always his excuse though. He's dirty. Always has been.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Apr 7, 2014 -> 09:44 AM) I hate that they brought him back. So lame. Agreed. They took the show from good to great this season, and then in 5 seconds they totally cheapened the whole thing. Terrible decision. House of Lies - holy crap. Does anyone else watch it? I've stuck with it as it's only 25 minutes and i'm usually looking at my phone, but this season finale was awful. Cheadle's son and his entire story line has always been super lame, but they went after-school-special with that dance off. Cringe-worthy. I won't be watching any more of that show.
  12. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 8, 2014 -> 08:23 AM) Agreed 100%. There is no doubt in my mind Calipari cares way more about his players than coach K. He has built a dictatorship in Durham to the old school college basketball model and refuses to let anyone change that or step in his way. It's kind of Penn State-esque. I've never heard of a former Coach K player complain about him. And those that are still famous are 100% pro-Duke and pro-Coach K. I really hate being the person to defend him or the school, but what evidence do you have of this dictatorship? Just because he won't succumb to me-first players?
  13. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Apr 8, 2014 -> 08:08 AM) Oh okay. I think he's aware of the state of college basketball though. He recruits the best kids in the country and when they are projected to be high picks, he recommends that they go pro. I'd take Calipari any day of the week over some sanctimonious piece of crap like Krzyzewski or Boeheim. Boeheim just last week criticized Tyler Ennis for going pro. He'd rather have Ennis stay, not to benefit Ennis but to benefit Boeheim. K got one of the best players in the country (Jabari Parker) to play at Duke this year and rather than run offense through him, he basically called him out after their opening round loss to Mercer. If these coaches don't want guys to leave after 1 year then stop recruiting the best players in the country. This is why I despise Deadspin/Gawker's bulls*** editorializing. Some writer gets a bug up his/her butt about something, they post some random nonsense on their website and then it becomes a story because of their viewership. Did you watch the video? Boeheim said nothing controversial. He wasn't criticizing Ennis for leaving. The worst thing he said was that he was not sure Ennis was physically ready to make the jump to the NBA, and then quickly added that his skills and game were absolutely ready for the next level.
  14. How did Anchorman 2 not win some Razzies? What a truly awful movie. About 5-6 quality laughs, the rest was utter crap.

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 10, 2014 -> 02:41 PM) No it wasn't. It was explicitly in the show that those schools were being used to find and exploit the children, and that there was a "a place down south where a bunch of Rich Men get some good killin"... He threw the gasoline on the fire. I'm not talking about the Hbuntu actual supernatural theories, but there was too much to the broader scheme of the murders that basically just got resolved by saying "Wellp". Yep, totally agree with this. Show was good with good acting but it took itself too seriously and the ending was pretty meh. Basically a slightly better version of The Killing without the red herrings.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 4, 2014 -> 04:21 PM) Tell me more about the magic cloaking spray paint first. Tell me more about how you think that technology is magic and doesn't actually exist in some form.

  18. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 4, 2014 -> 09:57 AM) The full-time/part-time distinction is central to whether or not a group can unionize. Fine, but we're talking about change the laws anyway. Or at least re-interpreting them. To me if you're making the argument that college athletes should be paid (and I understand the NW players are not as part of this union push), high school athletes should too.
  19. QUOTE (farmteam @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 11:19 PM) Kelvin Sampson hired at Houston. I'm not sure if it will be because he's too dumb or has too big of an ego, but he will end up in trouble again. What's the loss to him, go back to coaching in the NBA? Again, just to point it out, you can be a known cheater with a f***ING MULTI-YEAR BAN FROM THE SPORT and still get a job. But if you lie about getting a piece of paper 15 years ago, a piece of paper that has little to do with your qualifications for the job, you can't. College athletics everyone.
  20. That's such an insane amount of money to watch mediocre football.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 4, 2014 -> 09:29 AM) But I think the trick is "it's possible to make money off of people volunteering for an athletic program, but there is a dividing line between legit volunteerism/amateurism and a nearly-full-time-job". Oh, and the HS Swimmer in me has officially just resumed my taunting of the weak workloads of the football teams. Why should the amount of time you put into something matter? I think true amateurism is rural high schools where 50 people show up to games. The school isn't making any money off it. But those texas high schools with 30k people stadiums are clearly making profits. Someone is getting paid. That's no different than collegiate programs, just a different scale.
  22. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 4, 2014 -> 09:18 AM) We had practice 3-5pm, thursday walk through which was usually 1 hr practice, and friday game. Saturday was 1 hr practice with windsprints. About 11 hrs a week. And when I quit I didn't suddenly have to pay 40k to go to the school. I had that plus "mandatory" (if you want to play) lifting from 5-7am each day. The arguments are the exact same. The reason the NLRB judge focused on the control issue was in part to argue that the scholarship was less about education and more about football. There are ton of basketball high schools around the country that kids transfer to solely for basketball purposes. I'm sure in Texas football works the same way. I think if you're going down the line of "they make money off you, you should get paid," HS students have to be paid as well.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Apr 3, 2014 -> 05:12 PM) Right now the X1 can do 4 "activities" at once, but are expanding that to 6 in the next month. I can record 4 on one box and 2 on another. 6 shows at a time. #DirecTVpwns
  24. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 3, 2014 -> 04:59 PM) Magic and science are two very different things. In the year 2014, believing in magic is silly. In the 1500's, believing in science was cool, but not particularly backed by goofballs who... believed in magic and s***. But thanks for the pointless comment. WTF are you talking about? Did you even look at the links I posted? The act of cloaking items and making them invisible to the human eye is being worked on right now. It's not "magic."
